Interesting.

The letter could be interpreted 2 ways:

1) The marriage wasn't consummated and the uncomfortableness and inability to sleep was the result of a sheltered young woman suddenly sleeping with a man she barely knew in very intimate circumstances. It can take people raised in a much more modern age awhile to get used to the intimacy of sharing a bed with someone, let alone someone raised in a strict Victorian home. I couldn't sleep when I first started sharing a bed--I felt like there was no space and my privacy was being invaded somewhat. Who knows how that would've felt to a girl such as Stephanie.

2) The marriage WAS consummated and, given that both partners were shy and inexperienced, it could've gone very badly from a pleasure standpoint. There are all kinds of issues with making sure a virgin has a relatively comfortable first experience. Given that this was probably Pedro's first time as well, he probably didn't know what the heck he was doing let alone how to make it comfortable for his young wife.

The 3rd explanation is that their marriage was not "fully" consummated. That is they did consummate it but not enough to have a child...

D. Pedro was shy, prude and proud.

He did not tolerate his Father's behaviour regarding women, and was much against his relation with Elise Hensler, whom D.Fernando finally married to have peace with old Infanta D. Isabel Maria, known for her extreme bigottery who nagged him for his sinful life.

OTOH Infante D. Luis, the sailor-prince, although one year younger, had a much vast experience with women which also exasperate prude D.Pedro who never cease to recriminate him.

One thing is true however: after D. Estefânia's death, D.Pedro contemplated the idea of re-marrying and father a son who would continue the dynasty.
Probably not to have his brother and his eventual descendants in the succession line.

The fact that he contemplated re-marrying, or so he let know of this intentions, makes one wonder how would he foresee his sex-life.

A second marriage without any children would seem odd for a normal healthy man, at a time where infertility was always the woman's fault.

I think he might be sterile. A possibility I mean.

It is a pity I arrived only now. I would love to have seen all the pictures posted here (because now I only see an "x" on the place of the photo) about Queen Stephanie and King Pedro V of Portugal. Perhaps someone wouldn't mind to post some again, especially of Queen Stephanie (Estefânia). I only know about 3 or 4 photos of her...I would love to see more, for instance has she some photos where she appears with her parents? I know the one where she is with her sister Marie but is there any others of her with her brothers?

She was a beauty. I saw a painting of her in Schloss Sigmaringen.

In Düsseldorf the "Stephanienstraße" (Stephaniestreet) was named after the Queen of Portugal.

The picture is from the website Frauengeschichte in Düsseldorfer Straßennamen (Womens history in the street names of Düsseldorf)

Titled as Princess of Hohenzollern - I think it is Stephanie.

Stephanie was after Maria Sophia of Neuburg the second german Queen of Portugal.
Adelheid of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg was just Queen in exile.
