Ludwig III's daughters-Bavaria

Yes, that makes 13 altogether.  No picture of her I am afraid, since she died within five days. She is interred in the crypt of the Liebfrauendom in Munich with her parents and one or two siblings. This is the relevant inscription:

I wonder what went up kin Ludwig and Queen Marie Theresia to name their younger daughters with such unusual names among german RFs:
Notburga, Wiltrud, Helmtrude, Dietlinde and Gundeline, after an Adegunde (not a name I would choose for a daughter of mine) and the most current Maria and Mathilde.

Sometimes a name can make all the difference.
I once read that when the french king Louis VIII was looking for a bride in Castille, he was offered the hand of Pss. Urraca.
But the french thought the name so unusual they refused and choose her sister Blanche, a name more acceptable for the delicate french medieval ears.

Blanche became the mother of St.Louis IX.
Urraca would eventually marry king Afonso II of Portugal, where the name was not so strange.
Afonso II already had an aunt named Urraca, who married king Ferdinand of Leon.

Nowadays, it would sound very, very odd to name a child Urraca.
Besides, "urraca" in spanish translates as Magpie - in portuguese "Pêga" which is not a very nice thing to call a woman... if you know what I mean ;-)

Luitpold also has an archaic feel. I wondered if Notburga might have been named after the saint of that name, but on looking her up I found that she is the patron saint of servants and peasants, so that might seem an eccentric choice for a princess! Urraca has a rather harsh sound.

If I´m not confused, some of the bavarian princess could have been brides for king Alfonso XIII. I can´t imagine spanish people with a queen Wiltrud or a queen Helmtrude...

A specialist in Bavarian princesses?  Well, that puts both of us in our place.

As you know, the succession to the thrones of England and Scotland has passed from the House of Stuart through the house of Savoy and Habsburg to the House of Wittelsbach, where it remains to this day. Noël McFerran meets often the Family of Bavaria. He is received in München and Nymphenburg. Please, have a look at his site....Very interesting.

Yes, I was only joking, I know his site, it has good things in it; but I somehow don't think that the Wittelsbachs will ever be moving from Bavaria to Buckingham Palace, there is another German dynasty already in occupation.
