In the Soviet times, there was the Myseum of Revolution in the Palace. ;)

hehehe,   in the picture above you can see the famous armoured motor car of Lenin...

It was, after all,. the "Lenin Museum"  during Soviet times, was it not ?

I t would be interesting to my point of view to replace Alexandre's staute at his orginaL....

But,probably is there more important thing to do actually than this...BUT i HAD PREFER tjhis project for the 300th cdntury of the town than the tower of ence on Krasnaia plotchad...

[size=10]This splendid statue was relocated by the soviets in 1937 from Ploschad Vosstaniya to a less imperious location within the Russian Musuem. The official excuse to relocate the statue was to facilitate tram movement along Nevskii Prospekt.

Alexander III was, at the time one of three equestrian "guardians" of St. Petersburg set in their own squares.

He was relocated a second time and "parked" outside the Marble Palace in 1994 after lenin's armored vehicle was removed.

With the construction of the Hero City of Leningrad obelisk on Ploschad Vosstaniya in 1985, Alexander III will probably have to remain where he is for the time being surrounded by the facade of the Marble Palace rather than be offered his own open square.

In the Soviet times, there was the Myseum of Revolution in the Palace.

[size=10]The Museum of revolution was actually opened in Zimnii Dvoretz (Winter Palace) in 1920.

The Marble Palace remained unoccupied after the bolsheviks came to power. Not until 1937 did it become the lenin museum and functioned as such until December 1991, after which it became part of the Russian Museum displaying art.[/size][/color]

Thank you for the pictures of this statue.  I remember the first time I saw the statue (in a book  ) -  It was the picture of the dedication of the statue from high above.  The one with Nicholas and Marie (with Alix following behind I believe) walking around it surrounded by guards regiments, court officials etc.) In that picture the statue seemed so much bigger than it does here - is it the same statue?  Here it doesn't seem any where as imposing as it did in that picture.

Without the open expanse of the former Ploschad Znamenskaya (now Vosstaniya), that originally surrounded this monument, its grand size and symbolism is lost within the tighter confines of the building that now encroaches over the Emperor.
