HRH Princess Lilian of Sweden, Duchess of Halland

HRH Princess Lilian of Sweden, The Duchess of Halland, née Lilian May Davies, (born 30 August 1915),  was born in Swansea, Wales, the daughter of William and Gladys Mary Davies.  Princess Lilian is the widow of HRH Prince Bertil, GCB, The Duke of Halland, an uncle of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden.

During a few years in the 1940s, Princess Lilian was married to actor Ian Craig and during World War II worked at a factory that made radios for the British Royal Navy, and at a hospital for wounded soldiers.

In 1943, she met Prince Bertil of Sweden when bombs and shells were falling on London.  They became a couple, but could not marry for political reasons as his eldest brother Gustaf Adolf had died in 1947, leaving a less than one-year-old son, and every other heir to the throne had lost their right to it (due to un-acceptable marriages), it seemed likely that Bertil would one day become Regent.

For this reason, Bertil chose not to marry Mrs Craig as that would violate his right to the succession of the Throne.  However, his father lived long enough for Bertil's nephew Carl XVI Gustaf to achieve full age, and under the views of the new King, he was permitted to marry her, and did so on December 7, 1976, when they were married at the Palace Church of Drottningholm Palace in the presence of The King and Queen.  Still first in line to the Throne (until the birth of Crown Prince Carl Philip in 1979), Bertil continued to be the King's deputy.

When the Act of Succession was changed in 1980, the right to the Throne was restricted to Carl XVI Gustaf and his descendants; however, a special addendum was made for Bertil's case, so that he became third (and, after the birth of Princess Madeleine in 1982, fourth) in line to the Throne.

Prince Bertil passed away on January 5, 1997 in their home, with Princess Lilian at his side. Since then, Princess Lilian has carried on to represent the Royal Family at official engagements and other occasions. She is the protector of many organisations, and also a honorary member of several clubs and societies which belonged to Prince Bertil's areas of interest.

If anyone has any good pictures of Princess Lilian, with jewels and decorations - I would love to see them....

There was an article some years ago in either Royalty or Majesty which detailed their love affair. It was very touching.

Having sacrified his own chance to marry and have children of his own, as written in Viscount's first post, Lilian was the only wife to be given royal rank--something which rankled Bertil's brothers, but, in my opinion, was only right as they'd both given up a great deal for Sweden.

She is still seen at public and family events despite her advanced and is greatly beloved within the family. She is a surrogate grandmother to CPss Victoria, Carl Johan and Pss Madeleine. Still a lovely woman far into her old age.

She has a few pieces of CPss Margaret's jewelry and 'Daisy' being one of my favorites, I believe she is eminently worthy of the honor. :)

Original caption: Bertil and Lilian - Prince and Princess at Last! Near Stockholm, Sweden: Tuesday, December 7, 1976 at 12 Noon, Prince Bertil of Sweden was joined in matrimony with his sweetheart since 34 years, Mrs. Lilian Craig from England, who thus became Princess Lilian of Sweden. The couple met in London during the last war and the complicated rules of succession to the throne have but all too long delayed this marriage. The wedding ceremony took place in the Royal Chapel of the Drottningholm Castle by Stockholm after which the couple, with guests in limousines, were taken to the Stockholm Palace where [they] were received in the inner courtyard by an honor guard of bearskin-capped grenadiers from the Royal Svea Household Cavalry of Sweden before entering the Palace for the luncheon there served afterwards.

At 2 different Nobel dinners--the necklace she's wearing in both belonged to CPss Margaret. The necklace, by Koch, is composed of ruby, sapphire, diamond and pearls, is decorated with scarabs. It was a gift from Gustaf V and Queen Victoria of Sweden to their daughter-in-law Margaret of Connaught on her wedding day. Daisy and Gustav became engaged after meeting in Egypt--the scarabs might be inspired by that meeting and country.

I adore Lillian, think she is one of the finest members of the swedish royal family!

Information about the necklace Lillian wears on several of the photos, http://www.royal-magazin.de/sweden/crownprincess-margaretas-necklace.htm
I think the model is quite unusual, never seen anything like it

Always thought her the most radiant royal glamourpuss of them all! She simply radiates sheer star quality and seems utterly enchanting! What an extraordinary life she has had and is still happily enjoying! Long may she continue to enjoy! Vivre Lilian
