wasn't Francis Stephen made Grand Duke of Tuscany as compensation?

Yes, Prince Lieven, he was - all part of the shuffling around from the Pragmatic Sanction where Charles VI had to bribe various nations to accept Maria Theresa   and Franz Stephan as his successors.  Franz Stephan wasn't keen on abdicating Lorraine, even for Tuscany, but Charles VI's Cabinet Secretary, Bartenstein, said "No abdication, no archduchess" and FS eventually agreed.

He would have worn grey powder in his hair - the latest fashion.  The lips would probably have been the artist's fancy, Louis XV was never known to have worn rouge.

Sissi, the painter of the painting that initially went to the French Court, was sieur Pierre Gobert, membre de l'academie royale de peinture.  It was done under the pretext of being done for the embellishment of the residence of the Cardinal de Rohan at Sauverne whilst in fact it was meant for the Court.

Very unfetching, though I'm sure there have been worse fashions!  Wink
