ML's favourite child was the Duc d'Anjou, who died very young.  The poor child was sickly and some of the women attending him, being very superstitious, gave him the earth from the Saint Medard cemetery to eat, mixed into his food.  It came from the grave of a saintly person.  After the child's death, when the doctors opened up the body, they found a lot of earth in his intestines.  It was a mystery as the child did not go into the garden and there was none in his bedroom.  They could not understand how he ingested such a large quantity of earth.  Only for Marie Leczinska to find out with horror that her child has been given the earth from the Saint Medard cemetary!

She was an etiquette lover!!!!

This is a wonderful picture. I am pretty sure I saw this a couple of years ago at an exhibition on Madame du Barry in London. The painting was enormous!

Sissi, I do not think the portrait you posted above is the one that was sent to the French Court for the Duc de Bourbon.  The reason is, that Marie is already wrapped in a mantle covered with fleur-de-lys, which to my mind means she already is part of the French Royal Family.  Being a Polish King's daughter, the painting would not have included the symbol of the French Royal Family. Huh

Well noticed Pers!

Stanislas the Duke of Lorraine was exceptionally long lived. He died shortly after the funeral of his grandson the Dauphin, in January 1766, at the age of 87.

His demise was unfortunate, however. Attempting to adjust the clock on the mantlepiece in his bedroom, he contrived to fall into the fireplace. There being no servants on hand to rescue him, he was so badly burnt that he died a few days later!

After his death Lorraine was acquired by France.

Sissi, could you please check and do a search on that painter for a painting without the fleur-de-lys? Grin

This is an interesting one as it's a copy of the portrait of Louis' mother Marie Adelaide on the Marie Adelaide thread.
