Why has the site  acquired "hiccups"? It is most annoying and makes it difficult to read, at least those posts that are worth reading.

Do you mean the way the screen jumps up and down, Robert?

That has to do with the little news item at the top of the screen that reads, We are saddened to annouce the death on June 7 of Nancy Leeds Wynkoop, Granddaughter of Grand Duke George Mikhailovich. The text is too wide and/or deep for some screens, which forces the banner to accomodate it by expanding every time the message pops up -- hence, the "hiccup".

I have trouble with this at work, where the screen is a standard size. On my wide-screen laptop, though, there's no problem.

Exactly, Sara. So, how do we rid ourselves of the nuissance, short of buying a new, larger screen ?

Well, there's not a lot to be done. If it's really bothersome, you might ask FA to remove the "Welcome to the new and improved Alexander Palace Discussion Forum!" message, since it's the switching between the two items actually that causes the jolt.

The reason the forum is so slow is that it is a pearl-based forum and with 230,000 messages and so many users that programming language just can't handle the load.  In the next few days Walt is planning to move us to a PHP forum that should solve the problem.  He is already testing it.  It looks like it has lots of new features that we haven't had before.

The new place looks great!
I have to admitt that for several weeks I was trying to log into the old forum with no success because I did not pay attention to the line, right in front of me, saying to go to the new location!   Roll Eyes
Today I was able to log back in and the new revamped Alexander Palace is one beautiful forum to look at!

Now I have to catch up with a lot of reading... Smiley

That is interesting. I guess people can no longer just post to run up a post count, although they should not do that anyway.
