Hello Maria Pavlovna,

As far as i know Grand Duchesses Maria and Anastasia never wore nurse uniforms. They were considered too young for the nurse training and work.

Ah! Well, there are a few of Maria but none of Anastasia, since she was too young and was never appointed as honorary chief( I hope these are the proper english words...) of any regiment.

Here's Maria...

I do recall reading in the N&A exhibition book (too lazy to drag it from my bookcase) that Anastasia had a regiment--the 108th Caspian, and it showed her badge.

The customary term is colonel-in-chief.

What regiment was GD Marie colonel-in-chief of? I am not familiar with the style of helmet that she is wearing that appears to have an almost bonnet style of fur. Does anyone have any photographs of an actual member of her regiment with helmet?

9th Dragoon Kazansky. I read (on here, actually!) that the uniform had a green tunic and a dark blue skirt.

This is a dragoon dress uniform helmet from the 1910s, although of another regiment (20th Finland).

Hmm, I wonder why Maria's helmet wouldn't correspond to her own regiment...?

According to the Shenk schematics, the uniform tunic was "bottle green" (or Czar's green as the shade is known in the Russian army nowadays).  The trousers were a medium blue  which would mean that Maria Nicholaevna's skirt would have been of the same shade.  The white collar had a red patch bearing gold "litzen" (lace).  Shenk indicates that the helmet was proper to the regiment.  The helmets worn by the dragoons were similar to those worn by the Horse Grenadier regiment of the Imperial Guard, but minus the cloth flap in the rear.  I will do further research at home and get back to the forum with the results.

Coldstream is right in describing the 1908-1909 pattern uniform of Grand-Duchess Maria’s 9th Kazansky Dragoons  (actually not from Kazan as its name would suggest but stationed at Jitomir in today’s Ukraine). The colorized photo of Maria we see on the Web sometimes was done in the wrong colors. The Potemkin style helmet was black with a gold eagle and white fur (same pattern as Mike shown from the 20th Finlandsky Dragoons regiment who had black fur instead of white). GD Maria’s regiment had white fur because it was a former Cuirassier regiment. The original Dragoons had black fur. I don’t recall when Maria was named colonel-in-chief but it was after May 1910 for sure. Olga and Tatiana’s uniforms have survived but I have never seen Maria’s uniform. Does anyone knows if has?

As for Anastasia, unless the 148th regiment was named after the other GD Anastasia Nikolaevna (I doubt it) she would indeed have been colonel-in-chief on the 148th (not the 108th) Kaspiisky (Caspian) Infantry Regiment, which was stationed far from the Caspian Sea but close to the IF at New Peterhof (at least until War broke out). The IF seemed to have been especially fond of this regiment (which wasn’t part of the Life Guards) so it’s not surprising to me that Anastasia would have been given this regiment. I don’t know when she would have got it but I think it was during the War. This could explain why she probably never received a parade uniform from the regiment (at least I never saw a photo of her wearing it).

Thanks so much Daniel for your wonderful information!! :)

I would have never imagined Anastasia had been honorary colonel-in-chief of any regiment. I´ve never seem her wearing the uniform, so perhaps, as you said, she did not receive it due to the war and subsequent revolution.

So let's see...

Green tunic, blue skirt, black helmet, white collar - what about the ribbon she wears, and the two...uh...lines down the middle of the front?  I am so uneloquent and tired!

And now embarrassed.  Yes, 148th.  I didn't get the book out but I knew it started with a 1 and ended with an 8!

For Maria's uniform, I recently colored this (as in the other day)...is this correct or no?
