They had a Skating Princess Anastasia doll, I thought that was hilarious considering there is no skating in the movie.

The "On-Ice" theater did a presentation of "Anastasia on Ice" I think that is why they made it

The show Anastasia On Ice was my first ever skating event, I loved it, but couldn't help laughing at the beginning.

The place, St. Petersburg, Russia. The time, 10 years later.

Mom was like Ten years later than what?

Ah! That movie got me started on this Romanov adventure in the 7th grade, as it has some of you. I loved that song! It was probably the first time I got lyrics for a song off of the internet. I still know all of the words, and I love to sing it. I was very dissappointed, however, when I found out the movie wasn't true, and there wasn't a happily ever after. Anyway, "Dancing bears, painted wings, things I used to remember..." (of course in a hauntingly beautiful soprano voice.) ;)
She stepped away from me and she moved through the fair,
And fondly I watched her move here and move there,
Then she went her way homeward with one star awake,
As the swan in the evening moves over the lake.

Oh, and I was also born in December, but in that way the song means nothing to me, because I have never been a Russian Grand Dutchess whose whole family was massacred, and have forgotten, but am starting to remember.
She stepped away from me and she moved through the fair,
And fondly I watched her move here and move there,
Then she went her way homeward with one star awake,
As the swan in the evening moves over the lake.

"There can be miracles when you believe
Though hope is frail,
It's hard to kill...."

Gah! You'll never believe this!
For Christmas I asked for a music box that played 'Greensleeves', which I really wanted. But, when my parents went into San Francisco Music Bx Co, they bought me no classical gem, but a music box IDENTICAL (fake pearls, fake gold, and all!) to the one Anastasia's grandmother gives to her in the movie! And it plays the first stanza of "Once Upon A December'! I was so happy!  :) Yea! That's all.

I have that too, I got it two years ago.

Journey To The Past is nice, but like I said Once Upon A December is orchestrally and lyrically superior.

Well, once and for all, I'm de-lurking, and posting on some of my favorite topics.   So, don't be too hard on me, okay (I'll put my "history" over at the "How did you get interested?" thread).

Anyway, I went to see "Anastasia" when it first came out (the cartoon, not the Bergman movie), and I was probably the oldest person in the place without a child (30+).  Having read N&A when I was 12, I was looking forward to a "somewhat" historical movie -- even though it was a cartoon -- of IF (and Anna Anderson for that matter).

Well, I proceeded to sit there and sob through the whole thing -- not just because of the music (yes, I DO love "Once Upon a December" -- mainly because of the scene of AN dancing with her father and the IF walking down the stairs), but because the thing was so awful.  Rasputin as an evil genius who sold his soul to the devil and ends up having a BAT as a companion?  It was really too much to take!

The producers certainly did their "homework" in the layouts (pictures of the palace, the REAL Anastasia's childhood drawing), and that's what made it that much worse because they chose to ignore the real thing for the fake stuff.

But I DO understand they were targeting a "certain" audience (probably 10 and under), and they definitely wouldn't have shown the family getting slaughtered in the cellar.

So I walked out of the theater blowing my nose while everyone else was rushing to the toy stores to buy the dolls from the movie.  Ugh!

I think in some places the filmmakers definitely could have used Menken's magical touch with the songs. Newman's score was flawless, really. I have the 34 track bootleg of nothing but instrumental score. Flaherty had some low points in his songs though. Probably why you only hear two songs played instrumentally throughout the score instead of more than that. Another reason only 2 are heard in the score is probably because the other songs do not concern plot much. Journey and December are focal points in plot as well as characterisation. The other songs seem like they are just there. While most of the others are good (not brilliant), I think Menken could have done better... on the other hand, we might have gotten stuck with that silly scale he uses after every ballad (Bass low B, F, C, D, D, F, E, F, F, then Treble: A, high E, high F, high F.) Forgive if I am wording that incorrectly, I'm just practicing as a hobby. At any rate, it's cheesy.

Does anyone know/or can find the Russian lyrics to that song, I want to sing it for my music class. If you have them, please post!
