Books on Greek Royals
« on: September 08, 2004, 07:08:36 PM »
Hello everyone! I am new to all this, and I'm not sure if this is the proper place to start this topic, but here goes... Does anyone out there have a copy of the book The Inheritors of Alexander the Great by Nicolas Tanztos? It's about King George I and his family. (since he married a Romanov Grand Duchess, I guess this is relevant to this website!) I have been trying to find a copy for years, it supposedly has great photos! Since I can't find the book, I'd love it if anyone who owns a copy could scan some of the best pictures!! Thank you!  :)

I got this book when it came out, Gosh almost 15 years ago or so...it seems like an eternity.

The photos are nice, but I must say that better efforts have been published, particvualrly of late with Prince Michael of Greece's marvelous new book on the Greek Dynasty.

Thank you for your help! Do you happen to know when they'll be coming out with that new book in English? Do you still have any copies available on your website? Thank you!

The book by Prince Michael is still available at eurohistory.com, just email me about it.

I have spoken to the publisher in Athens, when I fetched the books last June, and they told me that although they would love to get the book in English, thery hope to do s, but it is not certain or likely at the moment.

The photo cations are not difficult to identify and the photos included in the book are simply marvelous.

I have a copy of the book as I worked on it.  It was published in a limited edition and many of the photos were provided by the families.  I probably own most of the photos in the book (as I inherited George's photos - or at least a good selection of what could be found in his apartment.)  However, as many of these photos remain in copyright -and I do not own the rights to the actual photos . I would not be able to scan them.

I meant which GEORGE did you get the pictures from? I'm assuming the author of Inheritors was known by that name since G was hs middle initial?

Sorry, but my translation of the Greek title is terrible :-/  Just got this book from my friend in Greece.  There is no English translation but it is nearly all photos anyway! so it doesn't really matter.  And oh what photos they are :D.  Many I have seen before, but the size and quality are stunning!  Hopefully my scanner will copperate soon and I will be able to post some here.

The Hellenic Dynasty is an absolutely stunning book.  I got the book more than a year ago - the photos come from Greek archives, so they own the copyright to all the photos. There was a discussion to publish an English-language edition, but so far nothing has come of it.

Marlene, the photos are fabulous, aren't they!?  I found the crispness and sharpness of the images better then any I had seen reproduced in a book or magazine.  As an author do you know the reason why these are so much better then other books?  Obviously the photos are extremely old, but I was able to see detailing of patterns on dresses and all the fancy stitching and pleating work of the Edwardian gowns also.

This book is being sold in the USA by, you guessed it, Eurohistory.com !

We got the book last year in June and quite frankly sold an unexpected number of copies.  I knew the book was fantastic but was quite surprised to see how many people went for it, even though the captions are in Greek.  The photos used are simply amazing!

Getting copies of the book was a challenge.  After trying to get through to the publishers for several months, I had the owner of the hotel where I always stay in Mykonos call Athens and arrange for the book to be shipped to us from Athens to Mykonos, then we transported 40 copies of this very heavy book from Mykonos to Athens to London to Chicago to San Francisco!
