« on: September 23, 2004, 07:14:07 AM »
I have found an interesting photo. The description is:"Princess Ana of Battenberg and Hessian Princess".So a woman at right is the youngest of King Nikola`s of Montenegro daughters,Ana (1874-1971).
But who is a pretty little girl? She looks like Ena of Battenberg...but I`m doubt about... ???

That is Anna of Battenberg (née princess of Montenegro - 1874-1971) and her niece by marriage Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg (1887-1969), who became upon marriage to King Alfonso XIII, the Queen of Spain...grandmother of the present King Juan Carlos .

Anna of Montenegro (one of Nicholas I's many daughters--some of the others being Zorka of Serbia, Queen Elena of Italy, Grand Duchesses Anastasia & Militza of Russia (aka 'The Black Plague'). He could definitely have given Christian IX a run for the title of father-in-law of Europe. Anna married Franz Joseph 'Franzjos' of Battenberg (brother of Louis, Henry & Alexander). They were childless and I don't know much about their later lives (post-WW1). I think they were financially dependent on some of their other relatives though. There's another picture from this visit I think. Their outfits and ages look the same. If it is, it was while Anna was visiting England. QV appears to have extended her fondness for the Battenbergs to A&FJ and mentions them very fondly in letters. It seems they may have often been in England as guests while visiting Henry & Beatrice and VMH & Louis.

King Nikola and queen Milena of Montenegro actually had 9 daughters :
- Ljubica-Zorka (1865-90) married to Petar Karadjordjevic, later king of Serbia.
- Milica (1866-1951) who married GD Piotr Nikolaievitch of Russia.
- Anastazija (1868-1935) who divorced prince Georgui Leuchtenberg to marry GD Nikolai Nikolaievich.
- Marija (1869-85)
- Jelena (1873-1952), queen of Italy.
- Ana (1874-1971) who married Franzjos Battenberg.
- Sofija (b. and dead in 1876)
- Ksenija (1880-1960)
- Vjera (1887-1927)
Neither Ksenija nor Vjera ever got married though the former was once considered as a potential bride for Aleksandar Obrenovic, then king of Serbia.

Thanks for the info. I do not know much about the Montenegrans and have not been able to find a lot of info pertaining to them. 9 daughters! How many sons were there?

There were only three sons: Danilo Alexander (b. 1871) who later was King of Montenegro, Mirko Dimitri (b. 1879) and Petar (b. 1889).

King Nikola & queen Milena indeed had 3 sons. The eldest, Crown Prince Danilo (1871-1939) never became king though since Montenegro was absorbed by Serbia in 1918. He married Auguste Charlotte of Mecklemburg-Strelitz but they had no issue. Prince Mirko (1879-1918) married Natalija Konstantinovic and they had 5 children (all sons). King Nikola's youngest son, Prince Petar (1887-1932) married Violeta Wegner.

For those who are interested in Montenegrin history, I recommand Marco Houston's book : Nikola & Milena - King and Queen of the black Mountains ;  found it very interesting, with a lot of nice pictures of the royal family.

A superb book.   A dozen or more years ago now, I got from the museum in Cetinje, another lovely book,  The Montenegrin Royal weddings ... amazing photos from the family albums.

And why do you think the woman is the Hesse-Darmstadt relative? She has no resemblance to them. If only some morganatic spouse of GD Ludwig IV's brothers.

i suppose that she has some connection with this family. In my opinion she is similar to Alexandra Feodorovna. Unfortunately picture hasn't any signature, date.. or something like that.
