I wonder because in this picture, Maria's hair is a lot longer than it is in this one. The first picture was taken a few years before the second, I believe.

The first photo was taken in 1914, and by 1915, Maria would have begun wearing her hair up. So I think the second picture is actually earlier than the first.

i'm sure that alix did get the girls hair cut.... or atleast mabey a trim once and a while

i would think that they would have had hair down to their ankles if they didn't get it cut once in a while........right?

I think girls get heircut, not just beacuse their hair would be very long but also beacuse cuting hair, even a little, makes hair grew up faster and in better condition.

i would think they had people to do their hair for them for occasions, so why not to cut their hair too?

I thought in the last one, Maria looked younger, but I changed my mind before posting it. And it's true their hair would have been very long if it was never cut. I remember seeing the photo of Olga sick in bed, and she has her hair in "pigtails," and it isn't that long.

It would appear that no one on this forum has an answer to this crucial question in Imperial Russian history. My interest regards the consequences of the grand duchesses having or not having regular haircuts and the impact of this upon peasant grain harvests in the year 1911 and the impact of having or not having regular haircuts upon the completed construction of railroads, bridges and canals in the north central Ural region in the years 1908-1913. If we look very closely we might actually find that the impact of having or not having regular haircuts could have actually triggered a string of dozens of unrelated events that ultimately led to the demise of the entire family. The answer to the question of these haircuts is of the greatest importance.

That's actually just an old wives tale. You're just more aware of the growth right after a cut.

For the first and probably only time, I found David's comments to be both funny and appropriate. This really IS a wasted and pointless thread from an academic point of view. Surely there are more important topics to discuss than whether they got regular haircuts?

I am sure there are; but isn't it the trivia of history that makes it human sometimes?

I think it would be inappropriate if it were the only thread in which something was being discussed. But it's not -there are what, thousands more?

I've wondered about the haircuts myself. It doesn't keep me up at night, but I've still wondered. The Amish, for instance, are not allowed to cut their hair but they still keep the ends trimmed. Like someone said, it doesn't make it grow faster, but it makes it look better and be easier to manage when the ends aren't straggly. I imagine that OTMA's hair was trimmed occasionally because it made it look nicer. Just as Romanov women were noted for their lovely hands, and therefore things were done to insure that they stayed lovely.

As usual Clockworkgirl21, you did not read my post and at least understand it. I commented on the impact of the girl's regular haircuts and their effect on the grain harvests. As you well know, regular haircuts have far reaching consequences which effect not only grain harvests but also the formation of rain clouds and the reproductive rates of migratory waterfowl in eastern Siberia. Far from making fun of you, as easy as that maybe, I take this to be a very serious discussion worthy of extensive reseach and scholarship.
