I was wondering if this is a myth, or is there some solid evidence to support this?

The source is 'A True Relation of the Late King's Death' by 'P.M', dated March 1685.

he might have. he seems like the sort of bloke who has fun and then suddenly thinks 'oh wait, i don't want to go to hell' and since he was raised mostly in a catholic background he probably thought that was the only way to avoid it...

A Father John Huddleston heard the kings confession, reconciled him to the Roman Catholic Church and absolved him, afterwards administering extreme unction and the viaticum.
