Belshazzar's Daugter
« on: October 07, 2004, 08:34:41 PM »
I was intrigued to find when casually reading   this mystery novel by Barbara Nadel which is  set in modern day Istanbul that  one of the characters (an elderly Russian lady!) turned out to be  Grand Duchess Maria! I found this novel a little uninteresting but the references that readers of this discussion board will recognise instantly made up for my lack of interest in the story line itself.  I won't spoil the plot but there are references to being rescued by one of the executioners, taking the name "Demidova" , etc. Of course, the title is a reference to the inscription found in the cellar room at the Ipatiev House.
For fans of G.D Maria be warned however that this is not a flattering portrayal!

I don't understand...is this publication fiction or based on fact? How did the Ipatiev house cellar inscription have anything to do with Marie, and if it did, what inscription-- the poem about Belshazzar, or the LYSV thing?
