Very interesting! Thank you grandduchessella. I think insect jewellery was very fashionable back then, particularly dragon flies etc. There is a picture of Princess Beatrice wearing 2 butterfly brooches.

Does anyone know why Helen and Louise, Duchess of Connaught (Arthur's wife) did not get along?

Maybe it was something to do with them both being German princesses?? Also I get the impression the Duchess of Connaught was not an easy person, maybe she resented the Duchess of Albany and her intellectual abilities & Queen Victoria's respect for her! Come to think of it I can't recall reading Queen Victoria's opinions of the Duchess of Connaught.

I know that Leopold spent time with the Hesse children after Alice died.  Anyone know how long he was there or have any stories about the time they spent together?

I know that Leopold gave his nieces gold bracelets because Alix had them to the end and even gave her own daughters similar ones. Other than that, I don't know a lot, but here is a picture of him and Alix together:

Actually, Leopold was the inspiration for little Fritte, who also born with "the royal disease". He was devastated when his young nephew died from a fall. They had hoped that he would live as long as Leopold did. So Alix had seen how hemophilia kills.

I actually asked this question because I just love the picture of leopold with alix.  It made me want to learn more about him----so sweet to spend time with Alice's children.  It must have been hard for him with the loss of frittie too!

Didn't Alix fall off of some fencing meant for vine cucumbers or tomatoes while she was playing with her uncle Leopold?  She was apparently still wearing the bracelet he gave her when she was killed.

Alexandra was less than a year old when her brother died, so could not have remembered him.

The cucumber frame incident with Leopold is in 'The German Woman', though I've not seen it elsewhere.

I don't have the book at hand, but I believe I read about it in Charlotte Zeepvat's book on Leopold.  I'm not sure I've heard of The German Woman.
