Alexei ordering soldiers to fire on his grandmother's yacht?
« on: January 17, 2007, 08:39:20 AM »
I stumbled across a Web site that claims Alexei was left in command of the bridge when his father and the captain were gone from the Standardt at the outbreak of World War I and that he ordered them to fire on a strange ship that was approaching the Standardt. They fired on the rear of the ship before they realized that it was his grandmother's yacht, The Polar Star. He would have been 9 1/2 or 10 at the time. Is this story even remotely possible? Were the Imperial Family on their cruise when the war broke out?

The same site claims that Alexei was furious with his father when he visited a hospital in 1915 and discovered a ward full of maimed soldiers, one of them a year older than he was. I'm curious about whether this has been reported anywhere in any of the reference texts. I've certainly never heard it before.

I believe this thread discusses both of those incidents:
Alexei Legends or Facts?

If I recall correctly, they're both "legends," but check that thread to make sure.

That's quite amusing. Even if it was remotely possible, I think the soldiers had enough sence not take serious orders like that from a ten or so year old, even if he was the Tsarevich.

Actually, soldiers "were" between a bit of a rock and a hard place with Alexei.  There is a very true story, recounted by Spiridovitch, about Alexei at Livadia one winter, 1911 or 1912 I think,  Alexei ordered a sentry on duty to march into the lake up to his neck in the water holding his rifle over his head.  The soldier reluctantly complied. They had to call Nicholas out of the Palace to come get Alexei, who has severely punished for not treating "his" soldiers with proper respect.

I'd been suspicious that could have been the case. Aleksei may have been a kid, but he was royalty, and he was the heir. If you're given an order by your future tsar, no matter how old he is or how ridiculous the order, it'd be a tough call whether to obey or not. It's kind of a 'darned if you do and darned if you don't' sort of situation, especially if you know the kid's just playing with his authority.

Even if that's a myth, you'd think Nicholas would have more sense than to expect soldiers to obey orders from his very young boy. Even though he was the heir, he was still a kid.

It was not that cold in Livadia in winter. No snow or ice. It was not "hot" though either. Probably maybe 60's to 70 F.  Maybe a little cooler.
