The brooch is really great!I am wondering has anybody ever seen colour portrait of Eleonore?I am wondering because I have only seen one of Victoria Melita as the previous Grand Duchess(posted by GDElla) and just few(I think two) of Ernst, but none of Grand Duchess Eleonore...why?Maybe she was not so interesting to the public as Victoria Melita or...I am just guessing!

There's a color portrait of her in Geoffrey Munn's book Tiaras. She's wearing the moonstone tiara that Ernie had commissioned for her. Since Alix gave her a moonstone brooch perhaps these were her favorite or Alix wanted to buy something to complement the tiara? There's also a deLazslo of her but I've only seen it in b&w and I can't find it right now.

This portrait can be seen in the video documentary about the Imperial Family with Prince Michael of Kent.
He enters a room at Wolfsgarten together with Princess Margaret of Hesse and the de Laszlo hangs next to the door.

Is this VHS or DVD available in the US if so please posts or PM me.  What is the "correct" title so I may inquire at the video store or Amazon.com.

lol thanx, but I already know that information, I just wanted to know if there were any web sites about him and his family? or any rare information?

~Anastacia~

There are various books that include information about the Hesse family - David  Duff's Hessian Tapestry is an excellent book. Richard Hough's book, Louis and Victoria
(also title the First Mountbattens), is another good source.  My book Queen Victoria's Descendants also has information on the family

100% German? As far as I know a Danish Prince became Georg I and his wife was the Russian Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna.
Only Cecila's mother, Princess Alice came fr Germany.

The boy in the doorway is 100% not Ludwig von Hessen und bei Rhein. I have seen postcards of this actual photo labelled Barchfeld. I think it is even quite obvious that it is not "our" Ludwig.
The naked little boy is him! I know the photograph fr the Archive at Darmstadt. He stands in front of the gate leading to Grand Duchess Eleonore's private garden at Wolfsgarten!

German by blood, anyway. The Romanovs all took German-born wives, including Olga's mother, I think. Any Russian in their bloodline was diluted to insignificance. Alexandra's parents may have been Danish citizens but were certainly German or Germanic by blood. No Greek bloodlines there at all. Cecile was quite distinctively blonde well into her teenage years. It's hard to tell with black and white photos, but I would guess that her hair darkened to a light to medium brown. Little Ludwig had darker hair than both his parents at a young age.

The photo looks to be cropped from the larger picture of her aunt Margaret holding her that was posted earlier in this thread.

As to the photo itself -- perhaps you could tell Linnea more clearly if you are objecting to her posting it or if you have no problem with other people enjoying the photo. The image isn't being posted for financial gain and most people would have no way of seeing these images any other way. Most people do not have access to rare books showing photos of royalty.

why was she named Johanna? Did they have relatives or friends with that name or did they simply like it?

I remember seeing another Johanna Van Hessen born to a different branch of the Hessian family. It may be a name that was common to the Hessians. It's also a name that is and was fairly popular in Germany. They may have chosen it largely because it was a classic, stylish name. I think the Germans pronounce it Yo-HA-Nuh rather than with a hard J sound as in the English Joanna.

Violation of intellectual property laws have nothing to do with financial gain  -- but the protection of the copyright holder - photos are protected for 75 years -- copyright law doesn't care that most people do not have access to rare books, etc.  That's irrelevant to intellectual property laws.  I would prefer that Linnea remove the image - because  a.  she doesn't own the rights to the photo (nor do I) but I  now own that particular print.  But if I wanted to use the photo in publication, I would need to find the copyright holder and get permission ... This is why I won't post photos.

Dear Marlene, I have now removed the picture as I donīt think itīs important enough to argue about it! Lips sealed
And bookworm: The name Johanna is actually still quite common in Germany (itīs my sisterīs name), but not as common as the male variation Johannes.

I do respect copyright law, but sometimes I think following the "letter of the law" is unfortunate. The photo publication date seems to be 1937, which according to you would make the copyright date run out in about 2012. The Romanov photos on the forum are older than 75 years old, as are many of the photos of the other royals. Any photos after about 1930 might be iffy, then, but they're edging up on the date when they're usable too -- unless someone renewed the copyright on them. Is that how the law works?

I wasn't permitted to copy my own family photos (which were taken well over 75 years ago, ca. about 1916) at a local Wal-Mart because the store was afraid of violating the copyright law. The photographer's studio that took said pictures has probably been out of business for half a century.

Does this mean that there is no copyright on the photos of the Romanovs anymore? Huh
