The Imperial Family and Italy
« on: April 03, 2007, 01:03:34 AM »
I would like to start a new thread about the travel, life, home of Romanovs in Italy.
I would like to start from a question about  Villa Sciarra in Rome where KR lived in 1881 and where he met often with Tchaikowsky.
Is this Villa still exist?

Serge also spent almost a year in Italy - since the May of 1880(immediately after the death of his beloved mother) till the march of 1881 (he had to return immediately due to the death of Alexander II).
He started to learn Italian because he wanted to read Dante in original version.

GD Sergey Alexandrovith liked Fiorentina Painture, especially Fra Beato Angelico.
He started to collect paintures beeing in Italy.
In Fiorenza he became a friend with the Head of the Fiorentina Academia delle Arte Mr. Kiavacci, who became his consultant.
So Elizaveta Feodorovna became the admirer of the Fiorentina school and Medici period too.

In Roma they spent a lot of money in the antique shops.

Yes I remembered reading that somewhere. And many Italians were struck with Ella's beauty.  ;)

I remember reading that Queen Elena of Italy arranged for Pr Ioann Konstantinovich and Princess Helena of Serbia (her niece) to meet in Italy.  They had a brief courtship and became engaged.

edit: niece not grandniece
