I don't think they ever looked like they were truly in love. As we know now, Serge wasn't interested too much in women. I wonder why all these homosexuals in those days married women?

Homosexuality, I believe, was not accepted well. (Doesn't seem much different today...)
Men would marry women to adhere to society standards, and to continue the family line. If the marriage was "royally" based, it would usually be for foreign relations and policy. Don't quote me, but that is my understanding.

You're right, it isn't much different today. I just feel so sorry for women like Ella, who never get love from their husband because he dosen't find interest in them but gets his loving elsewhere.

I'm sure Serge loved Ella and in his way showed her affection, but one most also note that he seemed a very private person (just like Ella) and I doubt he would have allowed his guard down even in pictures. But there are a few pictures here and there where you can see something very deep between them. Maybe it's just me.

I think they look more like friends than lovers, kind of like the equivalent to Justin Timberlake and Cameron Diaz lol.

IMO, I like their pre-engagement photos.  They both look so grand and in love too.

Scarlett is right...Serge does look rather militant in his photos and Ella simply looks elegant in hers.  Which is why I prefer her photos to Serge's.

Yes, so the rest are in the Russian Archives...too bad they can't be displayed to the public in museums or books. :-  Great picture I love that photo of both Ella and Sergei it is fantastic. Thanks for sharing Svetabel!

A family picnic in Russia.



Grand Duke Ludwig, father of Ella, is at back of his younger daughter Princess Alix (future Alexandra Fedorovna). By Alix's side is Ekaterina Schneider, and then Grad Duke Sergei. Also Prince Ernst Ludwig, brother of Ella and Alix, is lying in the front playing with a dog.
My guesss the year is 1888, and the place is Ilynskoe.
