Publishing a new coffee table book!
« on: August 04, 2007, 04:53:50 PM »
I heard from different sourches that in the Darmstad Archives, the Windsor Archives, the GARF and other Royal Archives are many many many more photographs and documents of our beloved subjects.

Why are these photo's never published??? So that we are not always looking at the same photographs in different books.

It is an issue of cost. The reason why Eurohistory's books, for example, have so many photos is because we use photos from our collection, which saves us from having to purchase the right to use other archives' people's photos.

In our upcoming book The Four Graces: The Hessian Granddaughters of Queen Victoria, we purchased the right to use 2 images from other archives...two images alone cost $200.00 ľ imagine what the cost would be for books like The Grand Duchesses and Gilded Prism, in which I sued 80+ images = $8000+ in photo usage only!

Luckily for Ms. Miller we are depending heavily on old images from the Eurohistory archive to insure that her book has as many photos as found in The Grand Duchesses and Gilded Prism. One image alone, which I bought in London some years ago, cost the archive ú1500.00, but it is well worth it!

To be able to break even one would have to sell the book at a prohibitive price and then people would complaint that it is too expensive, I mean, some always complaint anyhow, but one would never hear the end of it. Book buyers many a time ignore the tremendous cost that goes into bringing a book to publication.

Not to self-promote or anything  ;D, but I've seen what Art's going to use, and I assure all of you, you will be pleased with the photos.  Not just the same old same old!
So long and thanks for all the fish

I understand the costs. But there are also documents and photo's who are so old, that the text or the images on these documents/pictures are almost gone, slowly dissapearing because the age of time.

For example, the pictures of my grandparents where 500 years ago, still very clearly but now, the same pictures starts to lose its image itself.

Is there not a fund, to restore the documents/pictures in different Royal Archives, to save them before the documents/pictures are to old, to be used?

But what I understand Arturo, is that you buy photo's/documents little by little, so you save little by little historic documents/pictures?

Oh I do not think that you are self-promoting at all, but stating a fact, a little piece of very important news that makes your book, our publication of it, even more interesting for the buying crowd.

As you know, and I guess others will find out, I have been purchasing photos to illustrate your book even before it was decided that Kensington House Books was going to be the publisher. In most cases I have refrained from using these images in articles inside The European Royal History Journal to allow your book to be the first in which they are used and seen.

I want to thank Art for publishing as it is indeed an interesting though costly and very risky business. He has done wonders.

Its a pitty that the different Royal Archives asks so much money to publish 1 picture. Because, we all have seen the picuteres for example the Romanovs in different box a dozen of times. Over and over, the same pictures.

It would be nice to raise a fund to try to get new pictures beiing published.

I think that's a phenomenon common to archives in general -- I paid $100 apiece for some of the photos in my book on Annie Sullivan & Helen Keller.

When is the Four Graces finally going to arrive? We have been dying for it since the rumors started on the Forum years ago!  :)

There are so many members who are writing books! The best books are those of AP Members, who are writing about their subject with love.

Thanks Dmitri...

The Royal Hellenic Dynasty, which comes out in September (printing as we email)...is our seventh book, not including the six volumes thus far available of The In Memoriam series (two more volumes in this series are scheduled for the fall.

The Four Graces will be our eighth book and we expect to launch it at the yearly Eurohistory Conference, which is scheduled for October 20-21, 2007.

The right to publish The Four Graces was not officially given to Eurohistory until last year...at a time when the books was just entering the editing process.

We expect to launch it at this year's Eurohistory Conference, October 20-21.
