Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Countess Sophie and their family
« on: August 20, 2004, 11:44:48 AM »
From one of our fellow posters living in Romania comes the following question:

"Does anybody know what happened to Archduke Franz Ferdinand's children (expecially with Sophie) after his & his wife's assassination in 1914? the only thing i found over the internet is that she got married in 1920 to some count, but that's about all. i remember they 'used' her in one of episode of 'The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones'."

d.Graz 5 Mar 1954
m.Vienna 25 May 1936 Marie-Therese Wood
b. Vienna 9 May 1910 d.Radmer 28 Nov 1985
[Has descendants]

At the time of their assassination, Sophie's family became the guardians, I believe, of the children. Alternately, I've heard that Sophie, Maximilian and Ernst were raised by Maria Teresa of Bragança, Infanta of Portugal , the 3rd wife of Archduke Karl Ludwig of Austria whose 2nd wife was FF mother. (Perhaps a joint custody kind of thing?) Karl I (their first cousin) , also looked after the welfare of the chldren during his brief reign.  FF had been wealthy, with large holdings both in Bohemia & Austria, as well s inheriting a good amount from a distant relative. Unfortunately, after WW1 Bohemia became part of the new nation of Czechoslovakia & the government nationalized most of the properties there on the grounds that they were Crown property (which seeing as how FF purchased them and he never wore the crown seems a stretch). I don't know if they kept the Austrian estates afterward though. However, because they were excluded from the succession and therefore not barred by the law of exile they were allowed to remain in Austria. Sophie married Count Nostitz when she was 19 and lived a pretty happy marital life. Fate tossed her some more tragedies though. She had 3 sons & a daughter.  One son was KIA in WWII, another died in a Soviet POW camp. The couple also had a stillborn son in 1908.  During the 1930s, Maximilian and Ernst led the Austrian monarchist party which had as its goal the restoration of their cousin Archduke Otto (very generous seeing as how if not for their mother's birth, they would've been the heirs to the throne--I guess that shows there wasn't bad blood there) to the throne.  They were also fierce opponents of Nazism and were arrested in March 1938 by the German authorities and interned in Dachau.
Most of the Hohenbergs and their descendants seem to have done well, leading productive and often distinguished lives. For example, Max's younger son, Georg, 3rd Duke von Hohenberg was named
Austrian ambassador to the Holy See in 1988. (Quite a nice spot for a good Catholic!).

Remebering what has been quoted as FF's last words to his already-dead wife,"Sophie!  Don't die!  Live for our children!" it's just too sad. Despite FF's faults he was a devoted family man and they were a happy little group despite the slights Sophie had to contend with. It was due in part to this marital happiness that I believe she accompanied him on that fateful trip.  :'(

By the way, I just want to tell you that my family which is related to the Kinsky's (Sophia Countess Chotek von Chotkowa und Wognin's mother was née Countess Wilhemine Kinsky von Wchinitz un Tettau). Here in Buenos Aires lived for a while her sister Countess Marie Antoinette Chotek married to Baron von Wuthenau. Franz Ferdinand von Wuthenau and his brother Alexander left Germany in times of Hitler, they were close friends to Count Helmuth James von Moltke, one of the first to conspire against the tyrant. Franz von Wuthenau, the Duchess of Hohenberg's nephew lived here for forty years till his death. His widow, Elinor Baroness von Wutheanu is 93 years old, and they have four daughters (Maria Antoinette "Mucky" Countess Sagramoso, Franz "Pucky", Elisalex Mme Helguera-Duhau, and three others. Alexander went to Mexico, where all his children and grand children live now.

I have met the current Duke of Hohenberg, a delightful man, and took some quite nice photos of him at the 90th birthday party for Archduke Otto of Austria held in Vienna in 2001.

Great pictures as always Ella.  Sophie Hohenberg was very beautiful in that Belle Epoque style, particularly in the photo that shows her in evening dress.  She really looks wonderful in those well corsetted trailing gowns and with the Pompadour hairstyle (perfect for supporting a tiara); very much in keeping with accepted ideas of beauty that were prevalent at the time.  The children are all charming; perhaps Sophie took after her mother with that wonderful hair?

Oh thank you for those pics ella!!!  She is very lovely!!  I like the second one you posted the best with that hairstyle.  And I totally agree that the hair back then seems to surpass the hair nowadays in terms of thickness and beauty.  I've always been envious of OTMA's hair, especially Olga's, because hers seemed to be just SO gorgeous--the color, thickness, the incredible length!!  That's what I wish I could obtain the most--that incredibly LONG hair!!!! :o

I often think the better hair that (rich) people had back then was because they used natural soaps and rinses (like lemons and even eggs in their hair to get the shine) which had been passed down through the centuries while in the modern age we use shampoos that are made of who knows what kind of chemicals made in a lab.

I vaguely remember seeing the Young Indiana Jones episode with the Austrian Princess Sophie. I didn't know who she was supposed to be. Sad story, very attractive family. Does anyone have photos they could post of the family after their parents were assassinated. I'd like to see one of Sophie and her brothers in their twenties.

Moved over from a repetitive thread:

Quote
The children of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este and his wife Countess Sophie Chotek, Duchess of Hohenberg were:
1. Princess Sophie of Hohenberg (1901-1990)
    oo Count Friedrich von Nostitz-Rieneck
2. Maximilian 2nd Duke of Hohenberg (1902-1962)
    oo Countess Elisabeth von Waldburg-Wolfegg
3. Princess ? of Hohenberg (1903, stillborn)
4. Prince Ernst of Hohenberg (1904-1954)
    oo Marie-Therese Wood
5. Prince ? of Hohenberg (1908, stillborn)

After the death of their parents, the children were taken in by Prince Jaroslaw Thun, a friend of their father.
In 1938, after Austria´s Anschluss to Germany, both Maximilian and Ernst were sent to Dachau, were they spent seven years.
