When, after her marriage with Ferdinand, Marie arrives at the Palace of Bucarest, she finds all very ugly. Her rare exits downtown seem to her tedious. It is only with time, the birth of her children and the discovery of the summer residence of Sinaïa in the Alps of Transylvania which she will learn, little by little, to like her new country.

In 1914, she becomes Queen and appears a courageous and devoted young woman who, with a rare sens of the personal sacrifice, will work without stop in the national hospitals throughout the Great War. Become extremely popular, she will exert a strong influence on her husband and, consequently, the control of the power.

Moreover, Marie was also a woman of letters and an artist who painted and wrote in french tales, a novel and memories. What will be worth to her to be elected, in 1918, corresponding of the Institute, in the Art schools.

Speaking about her, the Count of Saint-Aulaire will make this flattering description : " she has the intelligence of a man and the charm of a woman ".

Only Missy could wear and pull off this tiara.

I wonder what happened to it?

thanks sarai, loved the romantic :

"Although Marie’s official biographies say she died of internal haemorrhages after spending several months in hospitals, other sources claim it was during an argument between Carol and Nicholas that Marie perished. She died after being accidentally shot by her younger son while covering the elder one with her body.

Nobody knows for sure what exactly happened between the three of them. Some historians have accepted that the gun was fired by accident. The bullet hit Marie in the abdomen and after a few months of pain she passed away.

It was a cruel and ironic fate for a woman who professed peace, love, and understanding between religions and people."

They came from Miechen's collection.
The sapphire (438 carats) did not come from the Vladimir collection. It was bought from Cartier who hung it on along diamond necklace they had bought back from Nancy Leeds (wife of Prince Christopher of Greece) or her executors.

I thought Missy bought it from Ducky...
The Cartier sapphire pendant (oval, cabacon cut 313 carats) that Marie bought from her sister...never belonged to Meichen..and was never worn by Marie..it was a wedding present for her daughter Elisabeth. I wish you would check these things Eric before making erroneous statements!

Not really. The sapphire tiara that Missy wore did belong to Miechen's collection. It was listed in the Cartier book by Hans. It was the same one that she gave to Princess Ileana. The large sapphire she wore did came from Cartier and not from Miechen. I think someone is reading between the lines....

NOBODY is reading between the lines..SOMEBODY is firing off answers wthout proper thought because he seems to think the more answers he posts the more likely he is to win a prize of some sort...laurel wreath? (by Chaumet, of course)for most  frequent poster. Perhaps that gentlemen would remember LESS IS MORE!!! and answer properly or not at all.
As for knowing about Cartier and Hans Nadelhoffer I was great friends with that interesting man for the last 7 years of his too short life...4 of which he was researching Cartier in Paris and London...so I think I know where the sapphire diadem came from...

Indeed. I am friends with people who knew royal jewels in London and Spain too. I think poor Eddy did read between the lines. I was always talking about the Sapphire tiara. The sapphire on the chain (I actually held it in my hands when the stuff went to Hong Kong). Lets go back to Missy. Some historians I talked to claimed that Missy did got her jewels back from Russia via an agent, but kept her mouth shut about the incident.

i visited my boyfriend's grandmother yesterday. she was around 15 when queen maria died and - since she's quite old - she has a fuzzy memory of events. but she did remember that all the women dressed in violet in her honor and that she was touched by that.

she told me that there was a rumor going around at the time in her circles - it said that carol was fighting with nicolae and tried to shoot him. queen maria interfered and got shot instead - which led to her death. no historical basis whatsoever but i think it speaks volumes of carol and the reputation he had.

she also said that she always thought nicolae was a very nice man and that he should've been king instead of carol.

it was a very interesting conversation - rarely do i get the chance to speak with people who were actually alive when all that happened... :)

Me neither. I wouldn't call somebody a loser just because somebody else doesn't favour him/her about somebody else. Ops, too many somebodies... Anyway, I don't think you can say he's a loser just because Missy "did not seem to favour him above Carol"...

Well...Nicholas did not seem to be able to make something of his life. He seems to be a clinging figure, and maybe why Irene of Greece dumped him. As a younger son, he was freer that his brother in obligations, but it seems whatever potential he had was never destined for fruitation. Missy was a achiever and maybe that was the reason he did not gained his mother's love. He married morganetically and spent the last years of his life drifting.

I have never understood what caused Carol II to turn out as he did.  I have read much about his relationship with his mother but have found very little about his realtinship with his father.  My research indicates that Nando was very close to Elizabeth and Mignon while Marie was more drawn to the boys, Carol and Nicholas.

carol and elisabeth were not raised by marie and nando. they were raised by royal nannies who - according to missy - were not very good. missy might of course have been just jealous of someone stealing her role as a mother, but still we must consider the fact that the two children that were entirely NOT raised by missy, turned out to be the worst of the bunch. that might be more than just a simple coincidence.

and growing up without your parents - when your parents are not psychopaths - has never been good for anyone.

The picture above of Missy and Ducky as toddlers is perhaps one of the few pictures where Missy is taller than her younger sister Ducky. Even though Ducky was a year younger she quickly overtook Missy in the height category. I have a picture of them both as bridesmaids at their aunt Beatrice of Battenberg's wedding, Missy is 10 and Ducky 9, and Ducky is about half a foot taller!!! After seeing that I always assumed Ducky was the elder of the sisters... :-[

(http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/4867/marievanityfair.jpg) (http://img141.imageshack.us/my.php?image=marievanityfair.jpg)

DOWAGER-QUEEN MARIE: . . . feel so neglected these days. Nobody reads what I write, nobody wants my autobiography, takes my picture for the newsreel, or interviews me or asks me to endorse a cold cream. Nobody cares if my little heart breaks—into print.

MAE WEST: What I mean, Sister, lemme put you wise. Royalty don't get you any place, any more. Today they only want the kind of a Queen they can hold on their laps. Lookit me, for instance. Every other inch a Queen, from hips to whoozis.

MARIE (proudly): Do you mean I'm not a Queen?

MAE WEST: In that outfit, Sister, you ain't even a two spot. Why, you haven't got a royal air.

MARIE (thoughtfully): You may be right although Carol gave me the royal air a year ago.

MAE WEST: If you want to be a real Queen like I am you got to grin and bare it! Take off those black veils. Be yourself, Queen! Show 'em a royal flush!

MARIE: Then will I really be a Queen, like you, Mae?

MAE WEST (reassuringly): Of course, dearie. Aren't we all sisters under the skin?

Brownsing the net i found this picture tagged as "Missy with grandma"

Is it Marie?  (The baby looks a lot like Nicolae, so its very possible that is her.)

Both Missy & Ducky spent much of their childhood in England at Eastwell Park. One time Missy even went down to kiss the grass while her aunt Queen Alexandra looked on. She said "You like it (meaning England)?" "Yes It hurts so much since I miss this so much" or something to that effect...

Its all comes down to corsets. However even the tightest ones cannot help Isabella II or Mary of Cambridge.
I'd like to add to your list Queen Victoria.
In fact the Queen Maria had a very small waist also with the help of corsets ;-)

But, in difference of May of teck and May`s Mother, QV snever cared to get tightlaced and try to show an hourglass figure. Marie was slim and she didnt have to tight her corset that much.

Wasn't that used in the biography on Victoria Melita--Fatal Passion? I think they put it on the back cover. There was a fairly small window where the families could've been gathered--basically the few years between Beatrice's marriage and WW1. I don't think the family ever completely gathered after the war before the Dowager Duchess's death in 1920?

They come from old newspapers and magazines. I do not know which is the fourth woman on the last photo. We do not differentiate enough to be able to recognize it but this may be that of a lady in waiting to the Queen of Spain.

Hate to say this, but the one crying is much bigger (in size). We all know that Mignon was the "plump" member of the family. Anyway it made sense, losing a father was harder than a husband that Missy never was truly in love. It became more of a partnership.

Many years ago, I received as a gift a cup and saucer which was part of the Queen Mary of Romania's china Minton set. I remembered some persian roses and light blue with her royal cypher or monogram. Unfortunately I brook the cup and saucer. I am looking for the story of that set order at Minton manufacture as I never enquired for it neither after the cousin who gave it to me.

Is anyone as a clue? I have no picture of the artefact and archivals material are hard to find for Romania.

Lets wait for Karldandzita for the answer. I think that the one crying is Marie and its not necessary to "be in love" with someone to feel deeply his/her death.

I agree with Katenka_Fyodorovna : The one crying is Marie - with may be exaggerating her behavior at times theatrical - and it's Mignon - it's clear that this is the younger of the two - who comforts her.

Yes, of course, Marie had a lot of esteem and affection for Ferdinand. It's logical to mourn the loss of the companion of a lifetime.

Yes, for all the above reasons as well as the fact that it had to be very confusing as to what her life would now be like. The situation would turn out to be very unsettled and unhappy for Marie. Ferdinand must've represented a great deal of security and reliability to her. She seem to rely on this more as she got older, as her letters to George V indicate.

Katenka_Fyodorovna is is a very lovely photo of Missy with her three oldest children and indeed it is Missy who cries in the picture KarlandZita posted, if you really looks at the picture you can see Missy in tears and Mignon confirmiting her mother. You don't need a pogram to see that.

And this very impresive photograph was taken during King Ferdinand's funeral. From left to right: Princess Ileana of Romania, Princess Elisabeth of Romania nee (Ex) Queen Elisabeth of Greece, the mourning wive Queen Marie of Romania is in the center, behind her is Crown-Princess Helen or Marie's sister Beatrice (?) and the last one is Princess Marie of Romania nee Queen Marie of Yugoslavia. I always have had a weakness for Royalty in mourning and 'Missy' and her family is having the same effect.

Yes, but it was almost an art in those days to make the pictures look perfect (retouch) with the help of pencils and stuff. Sometimes the photographers went so far that the picture looked more like a drawing than a photograph, and that is the cause with both pictures I have posted. Because when you look carefully at the first picture, you can see the coats, furs, hats etc. had some retouching too. If we could look at the original photographs, the difference would suprise you.

According to the publisher Ted Rosvall (who also published the Missy photobook), it is going to be a book based upon her letters to Missy. With photos from Diana and Romanian archievs, it is going to be a hot book to look out for.

From Sotheby's: Description, comprising: 1. Marie, Queen of Romania, Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha(1875-1938), signed “Aunty Maddy” and dated 1925.

I never knew Marie had another nickname besides 'Missy'.

It has several photos of the sapphire pendant (including the 2 posted here as well as one of Frederike wearing it) and some other tidbits about the sapphire, the chain (which belonged to Nancy Leeds originally) and what happened to it.

If you know and think of yourself as the oldest member just DON'T join the discussion if it doesn't fit the topic.

Or encourage them to the proper discussion or a thread where they can find the information rather than encouraging the proliferation of redundant discussions that make keeping the Forum to a reasonable and searchable limit possible. We can't expect people who have been here for a year to remember a discussion that took place 3 years ago but long-time and frequent posters should remember them--especially if they participated in the discussion.

That's part of the reason why some topics have 3, 4 even 7 parts when they have so much of the same information, photos, etc...

The date in the photo - right bottom corner - says 1892. So, it's before marriage.

Too bad with the watermark. The gown is lovely as was Missy's youth.

She looks like she's in mourning. If it was 1892 I wonder if it was for Prince Albert Victor of Wales or perhaps Grand Duke Ludwig of Hesse.

There is also one of Victoria Melita dressed alike, and the photographer is Backofen of Darmstadt, so maybe they were in mourning for Ludwig of Hesse as GDElla suggests

The picture was taken in 1899 or 1900 I believe, so yes, that would be Mignon in her mama´s belly.

Interesting ! In those days, few women (even royal ones) would be photographed with child. I never saw one of Queen Alexandra or Queen Mary heavily pregnant like that.

On the actual topic, seeing Marie in the enlarged photo stills, she really bore a resemblance to Victoria Melita--I never thought they looked that much alike before. At least, at this age, in these photos, the resemblance seemed marked.

Slavona, dont worry its not your fault ;-D!

I ve never guessed it was the same picture i posted  till i saw the  imageshack link which was exactly the same of the picture i posted months ago and two different pictures hosted in different days and different places with the same link its impossible.

I dont care about copyright, hey! even diana Mandache posted that image in her appreciation group of Maria on facebook  and i dont mind, I just wanted to make clear that i wasnt posting not giving credits of where i found it cause i own a copy and costed me  A LOT of money (almost 30  bucks for a  press image...i just did it cause Nicolae appeared there!)

About credits, well... since they re pictures of royals and mostly of them are NOT unique, its hard to give credits to those who "owns"  pictures, cause they only own a copy, not an unique or original image. The best way to  be credited is doing what i used to do  and other member does : Watermark images. I dont expect much credit if i post an scanned image which has LOTS of copies around...

This has come up many times and actually has a thread. A LOT of posters, especially authors do care about copyright even if posters don't. And as mods, we are frequently asked to take down photos that belong to those owners. This is very common with ebay. It's often not hard to determine that a photo came from there--esp if it pops up at the same time it was on sale or soonafter. THAT image belongs not to someone who copies it but who bought it. That's why it should be noted or marked in some way IMO. Otherwise, the owner is perfectly within their rights to ask for it to be removed. If KF doesn't care about her images that's fine and her responsibility. Others do and this shouldn't be cavalierly dismissed. We've lost some GREAT members of this forum because of this issue so I am very sensitive to it.  There's also the case of copyright  law and I don't think anyone wants to see the Forum get in trouble because of their actions. Diana Mandache marks her own  photos as well and is very clear on her website about copyright as is Marlene. They make their living through authorship and photos are key to this. She has also used images of mine I've bought off ebay but I've let it slide as I'm a fan. This applies to all in a general way and not KF. I actually find it interesing to put a mark and watch it make it's what around.

Anything further can be discussed on the appropriate topic.
