I simply love icons :)
I do too! I have more icons than I have room to put them. However, there are at least two or three of those icons that I would like to have. Are they all Russian icons or is there somewhere in the US where I could get some? I have an icon of St. Elizabeth the New Martyr in my prayer corner.

Beautiful!! thanks for sharing them!
Ps: there s more of Nicholas alone?

Well, that´s why I´m so astonished!

I cannot imagine for one second that the Russian Church made him a Saint bearing in mind his life style before his murder and the contribution he made to the fall of Russia and the dynasty. Although I suspect that the Empress would smile if she saw this icon?
-
I guess some artist just let their imagination run a little too wild....
Alexandra would probably love to see such picture...But it would raise just too many questions.... Why are her children there? And all looking so young? .....
-
I believe this one is another version of the well known one

I don`t know if this is the rigth place to post this question,
But where on the web can you by not to expensive icons of Imperial family
-
I cannot imagine for one second that the Russian Church made him a Saint bearing in mind his life style before his murder and the contribution he made to the fall of Russia and the dynasty. Although I suspect that the Empress would smile if she saw this icon?
Well they did and personaly i agree with the church....
-
Response to Post#56, attention Jebediah: Try eBay. Usually there are all kinds available at various reasonable prices. Good luck, AP

No, Rasputin is NOT saint! Perhaps some people, who wants him to be canonized, paited him at the icons, but it is not true.
-
The icons they are of the Saint imperial family are magnificent, you know where can be acquired? On line stores ? They have been in travel to Saint Petersburg but I have not found icons in the stores .
-
Attention "mishaxenia" : Concerning your post #62. Please check on-line with eBay, if you are able. Try: "Russian icons" or "Nicholas II." You will usually find a number of these icons available in all prices and sizes. Please understand that these are PRINTED/embossed images, not hand-painted originals. Best wishes, AP.

Many Imperial Family's icon 'bleed' -- during services at Ekaterinburg, on July 17th 1998, many icons began to bleed, from Aleksei's temple one drop of blood also fall across the icon. Probably because he died of that hit from Yurovsky. :(
With Rasputin,large and beautiful:

Maybe the other two people are angels? I can't think of anything else but the Holy Spirit or God. And the people in the back look like women - so I don't think it could be them.

I first though they could be the Father, the Son and the Holy ghost (spirit), but still - how do you draw a holy spirit (ghost)? :-\ Since the picture's not that big and I can't see it clearer, I've no idea who the people are. Although, it could be Jesus and... :-\

I have no idea who it might be near Jesus. My guess is also Virgin Mary.

Some general things about Orthodox icons.
1) they never include third dimension, and shaddow, because it means darkness or death. And, in all way you stand in front of them, you'll always have impression they are watching over you.
2) faces of angels are painted nor like man or woman, becuase they are special kind of nature.
3) background is not important, like I said, no 3D versions, all is linear. It is meaning of no 4th dimension -- time. It becomes dispensable.
Interesting, isn't it? -- look careful over Imperial Icnons, you'll find all those things I mentioned like 1) 2) 3).
Nena. ;)
-
Thank you very much for the explanation!, this is very interesting! :)
-
Yes, you're right nena. Are you Orthodox, btw? If you are - are you Russian Orthodox, or perhaps Serbian or something like that?
-
Yes -- Serbian one.
Icons are almost painted in golden color, it is meaning of shine, and black color do not appear, like it is, but not, only looks like, (it is light niance, not black).
Same thing with icons painted on wall.

It is not the same - it's just another version of, as Ally referred it, the well known one. If you look more carefully, you'll notice that some little details are different. ;)
-
The one with the three figures at top with Christ in the centre: It is hard to work out being so small, but I think it is an icon of the Deisis which shows Christ with the Virgin Mary Theotokos and St John the Forerunner (the Baptist).
-
Thank you Georgiy - your knowledge of Orthodox church is always very appreciated.
-
I agree with both of you. Thanks. I though so, since those three persons appears almost in all icons.

New infos:
--- Icons with Jesus, St. John Baptist, and Virgin Mary are called Dasys. It is Greek word. In Orthodox Religion, Virgin Mary's icons are most appearing. She is on his right side, because she is the most 'clearer' person, even than angels, but St. John is most 'clearer's soul' man on Earth. So they are the closest to Lord's nature.
-- Red colour of cloth in every icon means Lord's nature, while blue one mean human nature. So Virgin Mary is in blue dress with a red compinents too. Golden one means light. Same with rings above heads.
Lovely ones of N&A!
Nikolai Nevolin, investigator of 'Maria and Aleksei finding' hold one Aleksei's icon.

It is great and realistic -- but Icons are not so often realistic. For some reasons. And, Saints' faces are never painted on icons in profile view.

Showed as older persons here, it is way how they would look in Heaven. :)
-
It is strange to see Alexei as an old bearded man....
-
I can't see Alexei on the icon
a bold beared man is St.Nicolas
a person in the front with a white head-dress is a patriarch or metropolitan. his church dignity is stressed with a white dress and black crosses
-
Well, I thought from what nena wrote that those are members of Imperial family "aged" in heaven.... Maybe I understood it wrong..

Thats not the imperial family, thats there own saints. ::) ;)
-
You mean like patrons with their names? St. Anastasia, St. Maria.... and so on?
-
Icons looks older/different sometimes, becaus they would look in that way in heaven. I can't see a difference. ::) ;). And, Russian site labeled it as 'Nicholas II and family'.
-
Attention "nena" : I am fascinated and puzzled by your comment on an icon shown here (Reply #129, and originally alleged to be that of the last Imperial Family), that you have described as (quote) " Showed as older persons here, it is way how they would look in Heaven." I have never seen an icon showing a young person aged, because " how they would look in Heaven." In that case all the YOUNGER saints would / could likewise be depicted as older men/women. Is this a belief of Serbian Orthodoxy art alone, or is it common in ALL Orthodoxy? I will appreciate what you can tell us about this unique (?) concept. I have collected Russiaan and Greek icons for years and have not seen this "age-progression" concept. Best regards, AP
-
You mean like patrons with their names? St. Anastasia, St. Maria.... and so on?
yes. :) ;)
-
I promise I will ask my teacher about it, and if I was wrong, my apologies to ALL, OK? :-[ Yes, Serbian, Greek and Russian Orthodox Church have little differences.
It also depends who painted icon, and what he/she meant. But, like I said, I'll ask my teacher.
Ally, here is the biggest and clearest you was looking for:
(http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/Romanov/ikone/th_18.jpg) (http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/Romanov/ikone/?action=view¤t=18.jpg)
I wnated to say, all icons shows martyrs/Saints how they would look in Heaven.
-
Thank you!
-
Mandie is absolutely right - the icon is of the patron Saints of the Imperial Family - for example, the old bearded man is dressed as a Patriarch, and the St Nicholas is the famous St Nicholas of Myra in Lycia. The icon looks like an old one, maybe it was a Family Icon (showing the family's patron Saints) that belonged to the IF?
-
My sincere apologies for mistake I made. :-[

As promised, I asked my teacher about icon, and he showed me quotes from Bible, (apostle Paul's quote), which say about resurrection of dead people, etc.
According to its, there is no matches to be as Imperial Family portraits, since all icons show people in way of looking they looked just before their end.
So, he also states, that portrait highly might an icon, since he thinks rules of portraying icons are not respected, and was painted by individual will of painter (as painter liked to be painted). Hope things are clear now.
Also, he states , portraying younger people as older, do not match with their historical existing at all.

Yes, I love that Icon, this is the only Icon that I have seen in which Nicholas wears the liturgical headdress (I'd like to know the exact name of it...), sincerely I don't know why Tatiana is wearing blue jewels instead of green jewels like her sisters... :-\

Perhaps it is to show that she is the foremost of her sisters!

Yes, probably you're right...she was the second daughter of the Tsar, but if I recall correctly, I read that she was the most popular, she was indeed charismatic.

Thank you for the correction Georgiy, I'm not an expert of Orthodox Icons (although I like them a lot) and so I labeled it as it is labeled in the web site, but she is indeed St. Alexandra, martyrized in Nicomedia.
She was against the persecution of the Christians ordered by her husband, Emperor Diocletian and she was condemned to death by the Emperor himself.
I'd like to see other Icons of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and St. Alexandra.

Here is another icon that has not been posted previously:
The accompanying caption states:
This relic was a gift from Schema Metropolitan Symeon of the Holy Royal Martyrs, Old Calendar Russian Orthodox Church. The document attests to the fact “that a fragment of a bone relic of His Imperial Majesty, Tsar Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov was taken and placed in a reliquary together with a relic of a piece of the gown of Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna Romanov.” This one of a kind Icon of the Martyrs Nicholas and Alexandra was hand painted in Rostov-on-the-Don, Russia.

Does anybody have some good sources for purchasing icons of NII and family. I did a search on eBay and found only a few.

Russian Orthodox Churches for example, if you got a chance to live near. I think there must be icon stores about Orthodoxy worldwide. I know the one, I use to go in it here, it owns many books related to Faith in general, as well as for the icons.

Not exactly an Icon...?
Of course - not. That's a modern portrait.

Yes, indeed a modern portrait, I hope that I wasn't off topic with this, I thought that since it was still a religious representation of the last Tsar it belonged to this topic.

If I insert one of these icons in the book I'm writing, for the chapter about communism, do you think that the authors will quarrel? Who can I ask for the permission to copy the paintings?

This one shows Rasputin as a saint.

Referencing Reply # 192 : It is interesting to note that the Emperor has been depicted as having his head "served on a platter", as is often shown of Saint John the Baptist. I am certain that there will be many interpretations of this depiction. And as for the inclusion of G. E. Rasputin, well......a very strange iconography! Has the elevation of G. E. Rasputin been OFFICIALLY sanctioned by the Russian Orthodox Church, either at home or abroad, as a "Passion Bearer," or otherwise? I believe that this may have been previously answered as, "No." While ithis icon is obviously "modern," do we know its origin/location? Regards, AP

In reference to this icon...it's ghastly and misguided. AP says above that it's "strange".....that's putting it mildly!
Onward and hopefully more upward,

As I know, this icon absolutely isn't canonical. Maybe it is related with the heresy of "tsarebozhie" (tsar-God), which attribute to Nicolas a feat like Christ's. (commentary on russian: http://www.raskol.net/node/1441 ).
It has got a lot of adherents, but is officially condemned by Russian Ortodox Church. Images of Rasputin who isn't canonized are not exactly Ortodox icons, too. So icons like this could be considered just as self-will and incident.
-
I am agreed with anyone. Rasputin has not been canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church, and mos likely some of the icons are NOT canonical. They remind me more on the 'drawings', artists want to show them as the Saints, but they are shown in wrong way. I don't know the location or anything about the icon.

Don't worry! :- ), taking pictures inside Cathedrals and Churches it's not always easy, due to the lack of enough light.
The first photo it's very suggestive.

RomanovMartyrs , thank you for these photos! I wanted to ask you , is there some significance
to whether an icon image looks at the viewer or to the side? Some look at us and some look away. Thank you!

There is, but it's been at least two years since I took any sunday school so I can't rightly remember the official answer.
To the best of my ability, I can say, looking around at my own icons, that most often a saint depicted alone in an icon will either be looking directly, as if to see you, or skyward, as if to God. If there are many depicted in one icon, most often the 'leader' so to speak will be looking at you, while the rest look to the leader, or also skyward to God. (This is how I see most Romanov icons, with Nicholas looking at you, sometimes also Alexei as Tsarevich, and the rest looking toward one of them. Occasionally though, everyone is looking directly.)
Icons were originally created for illiterate people, to share the word of God to those who couldn't read the Bible. So many icons tell stories. For instance, Andrei Rublev's "Trinity" icon depicts the three angels are looking at one another, in a balance. Every little detail in an icon means something, so it's hard to remember everything. For instance, again, in Rublev's "Trinity" the feet of the two foremost angels create a chalice shape, in obvious representation. The colours everyone wears each have meanings too. You can see how I could go on and on.
I hope I helped?

Even ion our little Russian Orthodox Church of Buenos Aires, there's an icon of the family and another of Nicholas alone. Nicholas II pul a lot of money to help to build this church here in Argentina's capital, and he made all that it was on his own hand for the Church would send a good Priest here. The "Trinity Church" was founded in 1901, and his first priest was Alexander Izsrazzof, who came here with his wife. His family is still here and they have a Real State office, just like my own family. The Izsrassof and my mathernal family are good friends.

See reply 45 of this thread, there is an icon of all the "martyrised" member of the IF and their servants, including the 4 princes. This icon is in Moscow, a Trinity Church in the center.

I don't know the history of AN and the boy scouts...but that is a scout uniform. The yellow scarf, its knot, and the scout pin over his left hand pocket point to that.

Icons are painted using a special technique and it takes a long time to do it right. Please don't draw one 'for fun'. Icons are supposed to painted while fasting (abstaining from all animal products etc) and with special prayers.
-
I think that you must be somewhat "inspired by God" to paint an icon. Fasting would hep to it. I dn't remember exactly where I've read it. But icons must be painted with devotion in the sould, not just for fun.

So it's impossible to draw one of the members of the IF with a halo? Sarcasm intended. Painting a Holy relic is one thing, and paying tribute to those we have lost is another. So really, I wouldn't be doing it for religious purposes, I would be drawing as a tribute. If you think this is wrong, then go tell all the other artists on APF that they are wrong. I'm sorry if I seem rude, but it wasn't meant for religion, TRIBUTE IS THE WORD. Thanks. P.S. I do believe in God and that they have made it to heaven. P.P.S. Why bite my head off if I didn't know any better, you could have just said so. Sounds spiteful.

It's just that for some people, the Romanovs are religious figures and ikons have religious significance, so to them, drawing one "for fun" might seem a bit disrespectful--maybe you could pay tribute to the IF in a slightly different way (I've seen your artwork, and I know that you are very talented). I'm sure nobody meant to bite your head off or sound spiteful; religion is just a very sensitive issue.
-
Thank you Dru! Such a kind comment. I understand, I'm protestant and it bothers me when people are cruel to my beliefs. Thanks for being so understanding.
-
I was neither being spiteful nor rude, just pointing out that icons as icons are meant to be produced in a certain way. There is a big difference between an icon and, say, a religiously themed painting from the Renaissance, or, indeed, a tribute picture. Pictures are one thing, icons are another thing. Forgive me if I am wrong, but I had thought you wrote you wanted to draw an icon of the Imperial Family, so that is why I mentioned about how icons are made.

The members of the IF are beautifully portrayed in this icon, but the presence of Rasputin kinda ruin it for me :|
-
I agree. Rasputin does not belong on a religious icon. He is not even "blessed".
-

I concur.
-
His location is troubling as well. Like he's Alexi's puppet master. By the location and facial expression, the artist has made Rasputin more important in the picture than the family. imo
-
Nice observation Blessotma, Rasputin’s location is indeed troubling, he’s standing behind Alexei like he is the master and Alexei is his puppet and by controlling Alexei he’s also controlling the IF. What is also disturbing I have seen many icons portraying Rasputin as saint (whether alone, with the IF, or with Alexei). I don’t know why some painters insist on portraying Rasputin as a saint because simply he’s not one (and he will never be one)and also it give people wrong idea since many when looking to these icons will think Rasputin was canonized.

Voyageroffreedom, thanks for posting the Alexei's Icon. St. Alexei's icon, I am amazed how his life was painted in just 5 scenes in the background, hemophilia and illness' days, meeting with Rasputin, visiting front, captivity and murder. Such a terrible image for 13 years.
-
Very interesting icon of the Holy Tsarevich Alexei. What does the lower left scene represent? His mother bathing in St. Seraphim's well to conceive him?
-
What else was there to depict Nena ? His was such a short life and he was just a little boy. IMO Rasputin did not deserve to be depicted on an icon of the Church.

nena, I didn't really notice the background pictures of that icon until your comment...thank you, you got me to look at it again.
It's remarkable! And indeed when it's put that way, his life was very hard and sad. Yet Alexei himself ,when well ,was so full of life, one often forgets the sadness.

that is my guess

I don't think Nena meant there was anything else to depit, he simply meant that to see it all together as his life, was sad to see. I strongly agree with you that Rasputin has no place on an icon. I don't understand why he's there, honestly.
The icon of Alexei is fascinating. I've never seen an icon with so much going on symbolically. It's interesting to note the colors used with the clothing, I remember reading that the colors have symbolic meanings. Alexei is wearing green, which can symbolize hope, youth and eternal renovation. The red can symbolize martyrdom, life, passion, and life-giving energy.

But there is a prison guard and a Bolshevik murderer on it too. Don't you rather think the problematic issue is that Rasputin is depicted with a halo?

That's more to what I was referring to, I just didn't make that clear. I also had in mind the other icons I've seen depicting Rasputin as a saint when he clearly is not!
-
I'm i possibly the only one here that does not think Rasputin was a devil?
he was no angel nor demon. he was human like me and you ...and yes he did had a wild side with it comes with drinking and sex. but who here never did any of those things? I don't hate the man, if he was humble and quite about his status and friendship with the Imperial family and not bragging he possibly wouldn't have be killed. but he did and he got killed, politics sucks in many ways.
-
I quite agree with you, Mandie, and am wondering what the IF's distant Norwegian cousin Princess Märtha Louise de los Angeles who is very into guardian angels, healers and spiritism thinks of Rasputin and indeed the whole saintly IF.
-
I'm i possibly the only one here that does not think Rasputin was a devil?
I don't think anyone here is referring to him as a demon/devil. I couldn't care either way. He was just a person.
But he's not a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church and putting a halo around his head is questionable to say the least.
-
Very interesting icon of the Holy Tsarevich Alexei. What does the lower left scene represent? His mother bathing in St. Seraphim's well to conceive him?
Yes, indeed, since I think that the story begins with that picture in the lower left part going upwards up to the the top, then right, and finally downwards to the lower right part of the icon.
I don't think Nena meant there was anything else to depit, he simply meant that to see it all together as his life, was sad to see. I strongly agree with you that Rasputin has no place on an icon. I don't understand why he's there, honestly.
Absolutely! IMHO, just when I try to put myself in his position, I get the conclusion how brave and energetic, like Holly said, he was. It was his strong will of his to endure all those years. Honestly, I doubt that I would be able to do so. I always say, that despite all, hemophilia didn't kill him. (Somehow, but it is also questionable how long his life would have been, due to the illness).

Yes, am completely agreed. Well done, Holly! ;-)
However, back to the topic!
-
You’re welcome Nena :) I think I have an icon for Rasputin and Alexei but this time the backgrounds represent Rasputin life.
I agree with the ones saying that Rasputin has no place in an icon, not because I think he is a demon, but simply because he is not a saint, he wasn’t canonized by Orthodox Church. The thing is whenever Rasputin is a present in an icon, he is depicted with a halo, and that’s why we are criticizing and against his presence in an icon in such way.
-
Like others, I do not care one way or the other about Rasputin. I am with the consensus- he does belong on an icon.
Having said that, upon refection, this is NOT a Church icon. It does not follow the strict rules of iconography for the Orthodox Church. It is merely the artistic [and a rather good one at that] of t the artist. It is definitely not worthy of veneration.

I would say so, blessOTMA. You can also see the six crowns on the wall with the names of the family underneath.
It's a very interesting - odd - icon. It's interesting how all objects relating to his ruling Russia are on a table before him and he is dressed in his regular soldiers clothing.

An this icon unfortunately isn't Orthodox, but heretical... The Orthodox Church never names Nicolas "искупитель" (the Atonementor).

-
What does it mean that the family was put on icons? Also what is an icon? Is it like the drawings in the Catholic church that have the different saints and what they represent? I also I thought the Russian Orthodox Church was reluctant to canonize Nicholas and Alexandra?
-
Both Churchs were once one, until the 1000s when the Roman Catholic church split. We have early saints in common. Like Saint George, Saint Patrick etc...mostly from the late Roman Empire Times when Christians were being killed and the Christian faith was still very young and unknown in some countries.
icons are Holy Images, like how Roman Catholics have statues and paintings.
As for the Tsar and his family, they were killed in a Christ like matter. I dont know how to explain well so look here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanov_sainthood
and I hope that anwsers your question.
-
In addition to what Mandie has said, the Great Schism between East & West was in 1450, after the sack of Constantinople by the so-called "Crusaders". There were others before but they were semi-resolved. That date was the final break though. There was a period in Orthodoxy [Christian] when icons [Ikons] were not tolerated and burned. "Iconoclasm' I think it was called.
"Christlike Manner" is difficult to explain, but essentially, it means they bore their suffering [passion] with patience and forgiveness. No one, even movie makers could possibly know what their last thoughts were in that basement, but from all accounts I have read, they crossed themselves before the bullets. In that, they are honoured in icons as "passion bearers" NOT apolstolic saints. In both churches, dieing in the faith and going to the presence of god, makes one a saint [with a small "s'] All saints before 1450 are common to both churches, according to relevance.
-
Thank You for that information Robert. It seems to me their faith was also crucial in the enduring of their imprisonment as well as thier deaths. The strenth of their faith is awe inspiring.
-
Yeah, I know about the history of the church, but I was wondering about the change in the Russian churches position that they didn't fit the category for being saints. I especially heard there was debate over Nicholas II becoming a saint. But now that they are saints, what will people pray to them for? BTW, is it common not to make someone a saint who isn't of the faith they are being made a saint in? I'm just wondering if this is both a Catholic and Orthodox practice, because 2 of the servants weren't canonized?
-
In addition to what Mandie has said, the Great Schism between East & West was in 1450...
The year was 1054, and if the memory serves me, the period of burning the icons was in the 8th century, because the Saints were/are represented as humans on the icons. The Tsarina and Olga tried to make the cross before the execution.
-
because 2 of the servants weren't canonized?
Because one or two of them weren't Orthodox christians. I think Alexei Trupp, the footman was Roman Catholic.
-
Thank you Nena, that was the Great Schism. There were attempts at reconciliation until the fall of Constantinople when the Eastern Church felt betrayed by the Western.
That was the final break.
As for icons, they are items worthy of veneration, to pry for intervention, etc. One does pray TO a saint, one prays THROUGH a saint. That is, asks for their assist in help from god.
In the case of the IF, the Russian Orthodox Outside of Russia canonised thousands of "victims of the Bolshevik regime" The IF amongst them. [hope I worded that right]. In that, they were simply victims like the rest.
The Mother Church, years later, declared them "blessed and worthy", hence "Passion Bearers".
As far as I understand it, there is some sort of reconciliation between the two now going on, but the issue of the Romanovs is not deemed an important issue, at least for now. [despite the problems of the bones...]

I think of the Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich Icon is that some Russians always thought of the Romanovs, exp the Tsar as God on earth, and family members are considered "holy" I even found icons of Tsar Paul and Grand Duchess Alexandra Pertrovna (wife of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaievich, son of Nicholas I) whom became a nun.
GD Serge was killed by a revolutionary, whom many were atheist if you think about it.

-
Antonina, thanks for the last icon, interesting. The iconograph probably wanted to show the "passion bearing" aspect of Tsar Nikolaï, perhaps making a parallel with Job.
As for the icon of GD Serguey Alexandrovich: there are people nowadays who are ready to canonize every imperial person who suffer more or less and - before all - represent authority, autocratism, strong Russia and strong Empire. They paint icons of Ivan the Terrible, of Paul I, of Serguey Alexandrovitch, of Stalin (yes!), of Rasputin... This icon is not canonical at the moment. Near Sergey Alexandrovich'grave, in Moscow, there is no icon, only a photograph and an icon of Elisabeth Feodorovna.
I really like the icon of the four grand-duchesses posted by Bod. A big thank you. It is really beautiful and fully follow the tradition and the canons. Perhaps will I one day command one like this.

Interesting that the background building for this icon of the seven Romanov saint/martyrs is the Livadia palace. Although beloved by the IF , it has nothing to do with their murders, burial, major churches where they worshiped, or indeed, with any significant saint or important Russian Orthodox church history.
But then , maybe the point is that Livadia WAS such a personal haven for them.
-
Maybe the image is located in the Crimea? And the artist wanted to use a commonly recognizable building for the background, as well as underline the relationship the Romanovs had with the place?

I think that an icon is supposed to depict the saints as blessed in Heaven. They may have gone through horrible tortures and suffering (the palms are symbols of martyrdom), but now they are in Heaven, in God's presence.
In that icon OTMA seem extremely sad and Alexandra is about to start crying.
