Referencing the Emperor Nicholas I:   Typically, I try to do as much internet, etc. research as possible prior to asking an "open" question, but I will now post a question of which I have had no sucess in answering:  In Charlotte Zeepvat's excellent book, "The Camera and the Tsars,"  she pictures on page 40, the earliest photograph of a Russian empress, Alexandra Fedrovona, wife of Nicholas I.  Yet in her foreword (p. viii), she mentions that " the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg owns ( a daguerrotype from life )......one of Nicholas I. "  She also mentions on the next page that "the Royal Collection in Windsor holds a daguerrotype of him on his death bed, which has badly deteriorated badly."  Try as I might, I cannot locate a copy of either. (I have not contacted Windsor or the Hermitage as of yet, via e-mail.)  Barring any difficulties of reproduction rights, does anyone on this Forum have a copy to post of either of these daguerrotypes?  I find it perfectly fascinating to look at a PHOTOGRAPH/daguerrotype of a true likeness of someone who has personally known/spoken with, etc., Catherine II, Alexander I, etc.  How near it brings us!  Please note, I DO NOT refer to PAINTINGS/PRINTS/ENGRAVINGS, etc., of which there are many, many available, even as shown on this thread.  With advance thanks for consideration,  AP

Villevalde was the artist who painted the battles and various military events, so he was somewhat in favour of Nicholas I who was keen on military things. That double portrait (Nicholas and the artist) was painted in 1883, so long after that memorable day in the 1850s when the Emperor visited the Villevalde studio. Definitely the artist was ambitious and was not able to forget such grandiouse event in his life : )

His brothers Konstantin, Nikolai and Mikhail are at his back, on the right. While his son and heir Alexander is on the left.

I think that you will not see many PHOTOS of Alexander III on horseback, though ARTISTS would depict him otherwise.   It is my understanding that Alexander III did NOT like riding horses.    AP

Being an excellent horseman ON DEMAND does not necessarily equate to liking to ride.  It was expected of him to participate earlier and some things you just HAVE to do for sake of appearances/ceremony.  How many PHOTOS (and I emphasize PHOTOS) of him mounted in later life  (during his reign as Emperor, thus in control) can you show, particularly in INFORMAL instances?   A person may write an excellent hand-script, but may in reality hate writing.  If I may, a personal example:  I am considered a better-than-good marksman with a shotgun, but I actually very much dislike them.  Still, it is  "de rigueur"  to bring one to a bird-shoot.    Regards,   AP

Yes, I think that the couple could be Nicholas and Alexandra...or Nicholas and Hélène d'Orléans?...

The caption says "Le tsar chez l' embassadeur de France a Saint- Petersbourg. Le Quadrille de Honour. Samedi 11 mars. 1893"

Translation into English: The Tsar at the Ambassador of France in St. Petersburg. quadrille of honor*, Saturday 11 March 1893.

* If I'm not wrong the "Quadrille of honor" it's a kind of dance...?

Noo it's greeting card from the Bulgarian town Shipka ...Just you can see the Russian Church made by Alexander III and thats why he is there on the mark...Nicky and Ferdinand are just like symbols of Unity (you can see the two angels uniting the photos)
Yep, Elly is right. Though I'm personally not very familiar with this postcard, the inscription on it says "Руския храмьпаметникь на Шипка", translated as, as far as I know English, literally - The Russian temple monument on Shipka; I believe you call it Shipka monument in English. It's a monument of the battles of Shipka Pass in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-78. ...

Thank you very much!, it's very interesting!

I found a wonderful portrait of Tsar Alexander III right now.

All of these pictures of Tsars in military uniforms portrays them in a unidimensional way. They were the Defenders of the Realm and not much more. So when Russia had problems in 1905 and then World War I, the Tsar had failed in his one and only job.

Time for something new!

Time for something new!

Hello gogm, thank you for the comment.
You're right to say that the portraits of the Tsars in military uniforms portrays them just in a unidimensional way, the problem is that from what I can see, most of the portraits of them (especially those of Emperor Nicholas I) portrays them in military uniforms, however if I will find something of different I will be very happy to post it, thank you for the suggestion.

I´d really love to see this one in proper quality...

Me too...unfortunately I don't have a better version of that picture, I really hope that anyone around the forum have it...

I was thinking how Russians might have felt between the Russo-Japanese War and when they withdrew from World War I when I wrote "Time for something new." But pictures of any of them out of uniform would be very interesting!

I found it labeled as "Alexander III", but you're right, it don't looks exactly like him, I have to say that it looks more like King Karl XV of Sweden than Tsar Alexander III.  :)

Probably you're right, the label can be wrong...however, modern paintings looks often strange, if you take a look around this topic and in "Portraits of Nicholas II" you will see (and you already know very well) the big difference between an original portrait of the Imperial Russia time and a contemporary portrait...I prefer original portraits of Imperial Russia, indeed.
Title: Re: Nicholas I, Alexander II and Alexander III portraits.

Well i also prefer portraits done by painters which saw in reality the ruler and by looking him to draw him....Or something like this...Because in these days you can rarely see someone to draw it like the old vintage portrait.... i don't know if someone understand what i mean...I apologize...

I perfectly understand what you mean, and I'm agree.  ;)

In this time (according to me) the artists are more inclined to make a personal interpretation, (or they are forced to do so, since we are talking about portraits of people of the past, and they can't portraying these people looking directly to them, it's obvious)...in that time, as correctly said by you, painters portrayed the Emperors looking directly to them, so the interpretation was much more realistic and natural...or at least, this is what I think.

I'm looking for a portrait of Tsar Nicholas I, with a black military uniform, it's very similar to the one that I posted in the reply #277, the pose it's identical, but the uniform and the background are different, I have it in an old encyclopedia, the caption says that it is from the Historical Museum of Moscow, unknow author, my scanner don't work, so I can't post it here and I can only describe it.

I have also seen that same picture a few times around the web labeled as Nicholas I, I think that Alexander II was very similar to his father regarding the physical appearance, they were both so tall.
By the way, the kind of uniform seem to be more like the ones of Alexander II than the ones of Nicholas I.

Alexander II (it's the same portrait from which it's based the illustration on post 347), sorry for the small size.

The portait it's now kept in the Russian State Historical Museum (in Moscow).

I found it on some Polish site and I must say he looks diffrent than Nicholas, but I would not say it's not him surely.
Of course mistakes happen but people sometimes look quite unlike them on portraits. And  Nicholas I also didn't look always so dignified like on the other portraits, for sure.
Pity that I don't know an artist, I don't know nothing more about this portrait... so I have no proof it's him and in the same time I'm not sure in 100% it's him. ;)

Thank you for posting this image.

According to the medical reports in my possession, Alexander II remained in his military parade uniform when he was placed onto the bed in his study and not dressed down to his white underclothing as depicted by the artist.

In this photo which wife is Maria Feodorovna, this with black hair between Alexander III and one old man or blond wife with blue dress (I thin it's Princess Dolgorukaya)?

I think that MF is the one between the  grey haired officer and Alexander III. Then behind Alexander II is Vladimir Alexandrovich and Maria Pavlovna de elder. The blonde with bloody clothes must be Ekaterina Dolgorukaya

Re above depiction of Emperor Alexander II (?):  Very strange indeed!  Appears to be a composite?  IMO, the head seems too large and in strange relationship to the body.  The ribband is entirely over the WRONG shoulder to be a Saint Andrew. (The British Garter ribband goes over the left shoulder.)   AP.
