She said, they were evil. But Marie reminds of a cat. From her behaviour.

It should be something linked to superstition...in the past people believed that cats, especially the blacks, were the embodiment of evil.
It was a nonsense of course, but many people really believed it, and evidently, Maria Sophia was among of them. :- (

No it wasn't :'-(
About those of the cats, I still can't believe that at 19th century people could still believe in those superstitions that come from the Middle Age!

Yes. Cats has 9 lives and closely associated with witches...

The people believed that cats were close to the witches, and even I remember to read that also were a common idea that witches could became cats, so people killed cats for believing that perhaps they were killing a witch!!
Well, now back to Marie...

I haven't read that before and I'm not totally sure if it is true... I remeber to read that when FrancescoII asked for Marie's hand for marrying her, the young Marie didn't have her mestruation but Duchess Ludovika didn't want to let this oportunity of arranging a good marriage for her daughter and while she received education for become a good queen, she also received a disgusting threatment for having her menstruation that was to takie baths with nearly boling water (that hurted her skin) and also  leeches (that was quite common in the past)
Was it true? In this case poor Marie :-S

I read that in two little bios about Maria, too. I think it´s true. Ludovika AND Max were selfish and sent their daughter to a country without future. And they knew it.
The current opinion Duke Max was so liberal it´s so not true.

I think Max was not that into their daughters lives...He just pops in and have fun with them and leaves the dirty work to Ludovika.

Lovely photo! Haven't seen it before XD
Why wasn't Duke Maximilian liberal? I think that compared with the most common point of view of other persons of the royalty of his time he would be considered more liberal than them. And I think that Max and Ludovika weren't the only ones who wanted that their daughters could marry a wealthy and important husband

Ludovika was the one who pushes them but Max did not object.

Love that photo of Marie. She was middle-aged in the photo. Not too much of them exist.

Well, the one who decided about their children was Ludovika, in the case of Marie I neither know what Duke Max thought about the proposal of Francesco II, or in the case of any of his other daughters

As far as I know Archduchess Marie Caroline, Rainer's wife, was the one who made the connection between Marie and Francesco. Her sister Maria Theresia was Francesco's stepmother. That's why Ludovica and Marie Caroline got together and tried to win Francesco (and the crown) for Marie.

Marie Caroline was also the one who was responsible for Archduke Carl Ludwig's wedding to Princess Maria Annunziata of the Two Sicilies.

As always i posted the larger cversion and the forum automatically resizes it to not deform the page. You can have the larger version clicking the right button of your mouse and choosing "copy URL of the image" or something like that aqnd then paste it in another tab or window. If you have google Chrome or Mozilla you can choose "Open image in other window" or "another Tab" )

Exactly. I've seen portraits of famous persons where I'd never have guessed who they really showed. lol Just look at how many paintings from Sisi exist and how less the persons shown look like her.

Thanks go9d for pictures cause you can NEVEr trust in a painter! (it changes  extremely the face of the sitter making them look or way beautiful than the real person , ejem Queen Victoria, or like a different person)

I think that definitively the lady portrayed there isn't Marie, she must be Eugenie of Montijo (the eyes are similar and the shape of the face) or another lady...

I read that they were very excited about her pregnancy, but lost the interest about the child (like a pet?). The nanny was incompetent.
Was it pneumonia?

Yes. But I don't think she lost interest in the child, she just gave up one child and desperately wants to have one to raise on her own. It was a huge blow to her...

The best are in the Italian books, I got some stuff translated. The Clara book was the only one in English on Maria Sofia. Harold Acton's "The Last Bourbons of Naples" was another good source.

You mentioned before that the couple was excited with Marie's pregnancy but when the baby was born they lost all their interest on her... this info is totally unknown for me but I think that perhaps this is possible. I believe that perhaps they felt disappointed when they saw that they had a girl instead of a boy who could be the heir.
Wonderful pics, she seemed to be a good hearted woman

I read that she stayed with her sister-in-law Marie José at the Maxplais. Later she had an apartment somewhere at the Karlsplatz (also called Stachus) in Munich.

Eric, this is what I have:

Marie Redwitz, Duchess Marie José's lady-in-waiting, wrote in her book "Hofchronik":

1919. The Queen of Naples has also returned to her parents' house and lived, just like the Duchess (= Marie José) herself, on the second floor.

Arrigo Petacco ("Die Helden von Gaeta") quotes an interview Marie gave an Italian journalist called Ansaldo in November 1924. By then, Marie was still living in the Maxpalais. Petacco knows that she was her nephew Ludwig Wilhelm's guest. It's quite strange to imagine that the former Queen and the Reichsbank (today Deutsche Bank) had to live under one roof.

One of Marie's servants, Mr. Barcellona, said in 1923: Every evening at 5 o'clock the Queen's sister, the Duchess of Trani, comes here (= Maxpalais) to have tea with the Queen. The Duchess lives in the hotel "Vier Jahreszeiten" in the Maximilianstraße. Then I usually read aloud from the newspapers, because the Duchess of Trani, although she is younger than the Queen, isn't able to read without her glasses. The Duchess of Trani is 80 years old. The Queen says that their conversations are gloomy. Then the Queen always accompanies her sister to the hotel, which is quite far away, because it's dark when she leaves and something could happen to her.
