Who's the lady we can see with her?
RealAnastasia.
-
and my question is is Alix in morning ? Also larri*I know you like to date your photos =)
Could Alix be expecting Maria here? I believe she was in morning part of that time

She seems Princess Marie of Denmark, wife of Waldemar

Thanks for the quick answer, Therry!

Empress Alexandra ca1899. Sorry for the quality:
Ah! I just saw the date, so I guess we can say Alix is expecting Maria in this photo
-
Bless OTMA: I think Alix is in mourning, as GD George (Nicholas' younger brother) died in 1899.
-
Alix, the first is probably taken in 1899, while she was pregnant of Maria.
(http://img816.imageshack.us/img816/6926/1899caalix2.jpg) (http://img816.imageshack.us/i/1899caalix2.jpg/)
The second one is probably from the same period:

Loved these pics...In the second one, Alix looks specially gorgeous.
RealAnastasia.
-
Does anybody know how old Alexandra was in this picture?
And...if there are any more from that session?
-
the picture was taken in 1885-so Alix would be 13.
I know only of this one with Irene (http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/4104/alixirene85.jpg).
-
Thank you! I've never seen the one with Irene before. I actually have another from that session that I forgot about, but it's very small. Does anyone have it larger?

Oh, really? I believed she was taken in 1884 - just in the period when she knew Nicholas...
In "Tsar" by Kurth, there's this photo of Alix when their first mett is described, along with a photo of Nikcy taken in 1884...
maybe they've just messed up the dates...
-
Thank you, now I can see the rest of her dress! :D Her hair is so lovely there...and so long!

Wow new to me. Beautiful! Thank you. Alix's looks so much like Anastasia to me there and it's interesting
how they both had bangs...or as they would say: " a fringe "

That's funny, you know, 'cause in english you say "bangs" but in italian we say "frangia" that's so similar to "fringe" they used... i think it's french, though, not italian...
BlessOTMA, you're ringht: she look so much like Anastasija. Sooo much, it's impressing, isn't it? everyone say it was Tat'jana who looked like her mother the most - of course, she really looked like her mum, but Anastasija too. moreover, Anastasija was strawberry blond, just like Alix was, while Tat'jana was a brunette, like Marija Fedorovna...
-
Yes, she does look a lot like Anastasia there. Shows how if Anastasia had lived to be an adult, she would have likely grown up to be a ravishing beauty... :(
Does anybody know how they made their bangs/fringe so frizzy-curly like that? I read in a novel once that someone used a hot slate pencil, but that's not royalty... ;)

i don't know exactly, but my grandma - so some years after! - told me she used a sort of sheet of paper, the sort you use for food; they used a hot iron, and then "sealed" the hair into that sort of paper all night long.
But of course, my granny did'nt come from royalty...

Sunny what I find interesting as a painter of the family, is there are times where all the children look like a version of Alix! lol! Particularly if one looks at photos of Alix though her life...she could like like her father and then in another photo, her mother, Princess Alice. The cast of AF's looks can change from photo to photo. But as I say, I can see her in all the children...if not directly in facial features then in facial expression.
-
I'm completely with you; it seems like everyone of the children has mixed up perfectly both their parent's features...

Yes! It's a rare photo! I like it very much. I think there's one in which Alix appears with a very similar expression on her face, but the dress is different.

beautiful photo Katenka_Fyodorovna ! The photographer seems British. I wonder if it was taken when Alix was in the UK? Thanks for posting !

It was taken shortly after the engagement when she took a cure in the Isle of Wight in (I think May) 1894. Huge session

have that picture bigger (http://www.imagebam.com/image/564ae8133073270) ;)
thanks for that picture of young Alix :D
-
Wow! Really big! Thanks!
-
I love this! You can see the work on her dress and the details of her jewelry. The one pendant looks like a navy signal flag with the Russian eagle. Too bad she's rocking the Princess Leia 'do, though. ::)

That hairstyle ages her like nothing else. : (
-
it doeas look like a flag indeed...

to me it was always more Dracula style :D
-
I think she was a little heavier in her weight at that time, too.
All in all it gives her an aged look.

What are they all looking at in the first picture? They are all looking down, but I don't see any focus point.
The Tsar looks really short in comparison to Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich. Like a midget!
-
I think this is KR and Mavra is there too
-
Both pictures have Nikolas Nikolaevich written on them. At least that is what it looks like - the writing is faded.
If that is Mavra, they haven't mentioned her by name.
-
This dog loving bunch might be looking at Alix's Yorkie hidden from us behind her dress ....but that is such an complete guess ,
I'm really joking =)
-
I agree with Thomas that it is KR and Mavra. The place must be Pavlovsk.
-
There is another woman standing behind "Mavra" in the first picture. You can just see her and it is not Empress Marie as the Dowager has on a hat as anyone who was visiting would have on a hat.
I wonder where the pictures came from originally and who wrote the names on them? If Thomas is correct (and he usually is) then the names on the pictures are wrong except for Empress Alexandra and Nicholas II.
Nicholas II is still a midget compared to his relatives.
-
Re Replies # 52, # 57, and "Alixz": As to your observation of the "midget" status of the Emperor's height: As I have remarked before, the Emperor was keenly aware of such and once ruefully was said to have blurted out that such was comparable to others (generals, etc.) taking orders from a "dwarf." Of course, his genetic (height) makeup reflected his mother's genetic influence. (I might parenthetically note that while the definitions of "midget" and "dwarf" differ, they seemingly are often interchanged in everyday parlance.)
Though a bit O/T, another "diminutive" male ruler (no pun intended!) of the same time was King Victor Emannuel III of Italy, who was just over 5 feet (1.53 meters), while his own "counterpoint" cousin, the 3rd Duke of Aosta, was 6 feet, 6 inches (1.98 meters)! Regards, AP.
-

Compared to Nicholasha, who isn't? ;D
-
The person behind Mavra could have been KR's mother.

Alix with Irene or Ella breakfasting with Queen Victoria . Princess Beatrice ( with her back to the camera ) the man is Arthur, Duke of Connaught. One of the Queen's Indian servants is there so it has to be 1887 or later asI believe they came that year.

I think she is Ella :)
-
lol! That's what I thought . But a friend said Irene, so I put both! Now when I look, I think hmmmm maybe it is Irene...They also said the young girls are Ducky and her sister Marie...=)
-
Yup, those girls are Missy and Ducky ! great image!
-
what a lovely photo - Alix seems radiant!
any idea who the little girls might be?
-
read the comments above.
-
Yes! I think that could be Sandra (Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh) between Alix & Irene too, the hat seems to match that of Marie & Victoria Melita!
-
You re right, thats little Sandra!
-
I cropped Alix out of the picture, enlarged it and darkened and sharpened it a bit. Here is the result:

you're right, somehow I missed the post, yet it seems so strange see victoria-melita being a little girl while alix being dressed like a grown up!
-

You're right, it's strange to me too, but it's just 'cause i always think of Ducky when she married Ernie in 1894 - she wasn't eighteen yet at the time!! - and they (Ducky and Alix) were both grown up, but Ducky was four years and a half younger than Alix; i think this pic was taken in 1888 (not 1887) because Alix's hair was up (she was 16 in 1888), and at the time Ducky was only 11 and a half, a little girl...
-
infact ...
what I wanted to ask is if there was a reason why the little prinsesses could not seat at the same table with the grown-up?
-
Oh I see, I though it might perhaps have been taken in 1887 during Queen Victoria's golden jubilee. I checked the seating plan for the Abbey, the Duke & Duchess of Edinburgh where present & Irene is seated next too Princess Maud but Alexandra is not present which seems odd, perhaps she was considered too young though, Princess Margaret was present...
There is also a smiliar photo of Queen Victoria having breakfast taken in Nice with Beatrice & Helena Victoria.
-
infact ...
what I wanted to ask is if there was a reason why the little prinsesses could not seat at the same table with the grown-up?
I suppose it was not the done thing. Children would eat with there Nurses & Governesses I thought.
-
Maybe it was because the children might become rowdy, or misbehave and the like, so they sat separately with their governesses & nurses there to keep them in control! Or perhaps snooty society ladies didn't like sitting at the same table with children. Or because conversation might not be suited for little ears. Could be all of them! A book on Victorian society might shed some light on the matter.
-
I can't imagine Queen Victoria putting up with children at table! lol!. Particularly since it's breakfast , I imagine they girls had theirs in the nursery well before ...High society children and grown ups had diffrent lives ready. It's remarkable for us how people went from being children to adults almost over night.... the long adolescence of today was unknown
-
Imagine it cause that happened with Pss Beatrice´s kids
(http://i43.tinypic.com/2eknac7.jpg)
-
I'd think that certainly for grand banquets and such children would be kept seperate, because such functions could often run very late, plus all the other things I listed. But for small, day meals in family-centered royal and noble families, I think that the children would sit at the same table as their parents. Evidence: the picture of Princess Beatrice's children with Beatrice, her husband and QV at the table.
-
well we know they sat at table at least once! lol!

-
Marvelous larri*! I had just scanned a photo said to be from 1902....outfit seems similar...from the 10 years on the Stardart .
It's amazing how much AF looks like Tatiana and Anastasia here...that's how they crunched up their faces as well!

There are actually at least 3 other poses from this sitting--some Sandra is rather blocked. I've posted them at various times and places--a search should bring them up if they weren't lost in the changeover. The others show little Patsy Connaught being held by one of the Indian servants.

Nice pics. I removed one of the postings because it was a duplicate. Please try not to "quote" pictures. They take up too much band width and make loading the thread much slower for those who still have dial up.
Thanks,

Ok thank you.
I don't remember quoting pictures, I probably did it unintentionally.
By the way it is true that some pages are slow to be loaded.

Does anyone know why she is being carried? It looks like she is in a church.
-
There's a body of water in the background -- IMO this is a dock, and she was being transferred on- or off-board a boat.
-
I see the water now. The Gothic arches are what made me think it was a church.
-
Is that seriously a photo of 14-15 year old Alexandra?!?!? WOW!! That is fabulous! I can't tell you how very valuable that is for The Young Alexandra!
Sorry for the overexcitement, but I gobble up any photos of Alix from this period! ;D Is there a full?
-
Just a quick reminder. Photos can not be "gobbled up" without the permission of the owner of the photo or negative.
Remember not to take pictures that are not yours to take. If you reproduce them in another work or book or on line site you might be liable for damages against copy right infringement.
I have been worried about the proliferation of photos in this thread without source information and in the Nicholas II Photo thread where many new photos have been posted lately.
See FA for more information, please.
:-)
-
Alixz is correct. Photos can NOT just be grabbed off the internet and posted here, unless you KNOW for certain that the image is free to use, such as from the Beineke Library, or you have PERMISSION from the owner. I have deleted one recent photo that was clearly scanned from an unidentified book (the photogravure dots were obvious) as that violates international copyright law even if YOU own the BOOK...
I am under a legal obligation to abide by international copyright law. Thanks for your cooperation. I suggest that instead of posting the actual photo here, you simply link to where you found it on the internet, that avoids any issues with us in terms of violations.
-
Sorry if anyone mistook my sentence "valuable for the young alexandra". This is a dream project of a amateur film about Alix as a young Hessian princess, and I did not mean in the least that I would publish the photo. All I meant was that it was valuable for costume reference.

Вы написала "Могилев, ставка главнокомандующего". А ведь в 1914 ставка еще не была в Могилеве, и Александра Федоровна в ставку не ездила. Скорее всего это где-то под Петербургом?

It is nice photo - the fountain is located in the Governor's house backyard at Mogilev, there is photo of the Heir sitting on it. I think that it was taken in 1916. Spasiba, Nemos!

Посещение Императорской семьей Барановичей в 1914 г.** (Обьём файла 293 819 б).
дело в том, что судя по строениям на фото не Барановичи а какой то другой город. В Барановичах не было ратуши и церкви такой как на фото...
Visit the Imperial family Baranovichi in 1914 ** (File Num 293 819 b).
The fact is that judging by the buildings in the photo is not Baranovichi and what the other city. In Baranovichi was the town hall and the church such as in the photo ...
А где это место ?
And where is this place?

The place is Mogilev, near the Dnieper. I recognise Stavka's buildings on the right and in the center.

She was really beautiful, and may I ask when those were taken, early 1890's?
-
1894, I think, for engagement. It's interesting we never see the whole dress, I wonder what it looked like. The sleeves certainly are strange. It makes me think almost of a costume ball outfit, Renaissance time or something of that sort.
-
Thank You CAROLATH! This is my favorite photo shoot by Alix, I would love to know what color was the dress :)

A nice smile from Alix! Perhaps this was taken when the Queen was trying to convince AF to marry Eddie! Thanks!

It's a lovely smile and much better in the full size picture. Did you notice how much Queen Victoria looks like her dog?

Alix and Anna V. I believe? Isn't it kind when Royals date their photos, it does make them so much easier to date (even though we can't always take them as fact).
I've never seen it, so thank you.

Wow, that lacked in enthusiasm...don't let this person be your travel guide, lol.
Liberty Bell - Philadelphia, Pa.
This was prominent during the Colonial era and used around the time of the American Revolution. Interestingly it became of symbol for freedom and national pride even though it has a big crack in it. You can visit the neighboring Independence Hall and National Constitution Museum where only hired guides by the City of Philadelphia's Historical Society will show you around and no one else...blah!
-
Lord, I'm so old that as a school child in the 60's ( one of 30 tiny terrors ) I was allowed, nay encouraged, to run my hand over the bell and its crack ( as anyone before it could, it was simply hanging out in Independence Hall ! ) ... and move among the delegates desks ( and open them!) in the hall itself!

Haha! Now of course they have it placed in a separate building across the street (since 1976 I want to say?) and you need to pass through a pat down and metal detector check just to walk up no closer than the security rope around it...much less touch it! lol
Anyway...I like the statue/bust photo of Alexandra just not the bland way and subtle criticism offered up by our friend (Luba?) here.

Wow I can really see TN in that first photo of Alix by herself! Thanks for the group photo as well !
Learning about Alix's extended family shines a light on her later life...it's an important aspect . Thanks again!
-
How do you save the pictures from the Royal Collection? I've tried everything!
-
It was explained recently in the latest Rare Pictures thread. :)
Left to right: Princess Helena Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein, standing; Fräulein von Fabrice, standing; Princess Alix of Hesse, seated; Fräulein Schneider, standing. August 1894
Who is Fraulein Schneider? Her name sounds familiar but I can't place it. Catherine comes to mind as a first name, but I'm not sure if I'm getting her mixed up with the woman who helped Alix learn Russian and later was a sort of tutor to the children, or if they are one and the same person!
Amazing photos as always...it's great how clear and large they are.
-
I think it is Catherine Schneider, I remember reading once(though I don't remember where) that she was at the time with Alix teaching her Russian.
-
It is indeed the same Fräulein Schneider - Schneiderlein, Trina, Trinchen who was murdered in Jekaterinburg after refusing to leave the IF
-
I thought it was in Perm?... it's amazing how long Trina was with Alix. And as it as been pointed out, she was so unasuming, only those in the know realized her importance.
(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/th_TrinaNastenka.jpg) (http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/TrinaNastenka.jpg)
Catherine Adolfovna Schneider and Countess Hendrikova in the Standart's dining salon. These two , similar in thier great devotion to Alix and the family, were imprisoned together and then shot together...I have thought a play set in thier jail cell would be great...The Countess could say to Fraulein Schneider : Oh Trina tell me about the early days...and off the play would go. Their devotion to Alix and each other reminds me of Ruth and Niobe . Ruth 1:16 “Intreat me not to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay...
-
Very touching Anne...thanks for sharing!
I had a similar idea for the mini-series project that would show Elisabeth Feodorovna in the bottom of that awful mine shaft. Nursing others even while she herself was badly wounded. The Orthodox hymns being sung all the while she reflected (a sort of "whole life flashing in front of you" moment) on a couple of important moments from her past. Initiate the flashback sequence!
This sounds great too! Two devoted women talking about Alix and reflecting on their past experiences...playing the role of narrator. Write it and we will be sure to include it :-)
-
That sounds interesting too! ...it was an amazingly diverse group of Romanovs held together in Alapaevsk ....but a bond happens in such a foxhole that is hard to explain. Ella was very close to her brother in law , GD Paul , but disapproved of his 2nd marriage...yet in captivity she spent time with the son of that marriage. ....it all had to be the cause of a good deal of reflection! The thing is Trina would never speak about Alix while Alix lived...but Trina and Countess Hendrikova were shot about 2 months after the family...perhaps learning the family was killed and fearing for thier own future, would cause Trina to finally speak...particularly to someone she knew understood, loved the family and even chose the same path of service.

Where was this one taken, Ally?
-
The website said Livadia.
-
Thanks, Ally.
It is a good photo of N&A.
-
I wouldn't have recognised Trina Schneider from her 1894 photo. Unlike most of the Romanovs and their acquaintances who seem totally recognisable even after many years, Trina seems so much different in her last photos. But her character remained unchanged, solid sterling.
-

I read a passage in Sophie Buxhoevden's book that mentions a photo:
With many regrets and numerous boxes of sweets - a photograph taken at the time of their arrival shows them surrounded by empty boxes! - Princess Alix went back to Darmstadt.
(it was talking about the Hesses visit to Illinskoe, 1890.)
Does this photo still exist?
-
The State Archive in Darmstadt has the following two pictures of Alix, her sister Victoria and her lady-in-waiting Margarethe von Fabrice with boxes of sweets:

-
Lovely photo! And I agree, Lady_Macduff.
-
Interesting, thank you! I have seen one of those before - I just never knew those were empty candy boxes! For some reason I pictured the photograph as being more informal. It strikes me as being rather funny to have such a posed, formal-ish pictures with empty sweets boxes!
This is rather off-subject, but I was exploring the Darmstadt State Archive and was wondering if they have any pictures of the interiors of the New Palace. Do they?
-
Perhaps a Romanov-era "awkward family photo?" I think the same applies to all the photos of the grand duchesses when they're lined up one in front of the other. :)
-

I suspect that the State Archive does have some pictures of the New Palace interiors.
Did you know that there's a book about the architecture and interior decoration and furnishing of the palace? Its title is: "Das Darmstädter Neue Palais. Ein fürstlicher Wohnsitz zwischen Historismus und Jugendstil", by Petra Tücks.
-
Wonderful shots. You can see where Tatiana got her nose in the second one. :)
We can also see why Alix was considered one of the most beautiful princesses of the time!

To me, it looks like 1893.
-
Looks like 1893 to me too. Could also be 1898?
-
Considering how young she looks and that the photograph was taken at Wolfsgarten, I would say that it most certainly was taken in 1893. :)
-
I guess that it is 1893 as well, did she ever signed herself as 'Alix' after the marriage (in 1898 she was the Russian Empress, Alexandra).
-
I believe that she used the name Alix throughout her life. Nicky never called her Alexandra (even though it was her "official" name), but Alix and I believe other close relations did that too. This photo from 1899 is signed Alix.

This photo comes from the book "Briefe der Zarin Alexandra von Russland an ihre Jugendfreundin Toni Becker-Bracht". In it the caption says 1893.
-
Thank you! Yes, now I see it does look like '1893'. Sadly, I didn't think she looked all that young in the photo - perhaps because she was squinting in the light.

At the risk of straying off topic, how tall was Serge? I knew Ernie was not a large man by any means but in this photo he appears even a hair shorter than Nicholas, or right about 5'7".

I've always thought of Ernie as being about 5'8", give or take a half inch. In other words , about Nicholas' height, though I must say that in their appearances together, Nicholas looks like the slighter figure. Interestingly, Ernie even seems shorter than his sister Alix in mamy photos.
I think Serge was at least six feet tall, possibly more, like his brothers, but perhaps appearing taller because of his slender build. That is, tall and lean.

Alexandra with her brother and father dressed for a costume ball
Mann, Thomas Mann!
Ernst in tights, fur and feather - and in that pose! Gaydar blinking pink! Looks like something Pater Schimmelpreester a little further west in Hesse (in Bingen) could have come up with, as per Felix Krull.

She looks very pretty on this photo.
And as her contemporaries have said, it's true that she obviously loved flowers ! I think there're about seven flower pots around her.

Absolutely beautiful!

Is the nephew the future Lord Mountbatten?
-
I love the picture Ally posted of Alexandra at Evpatoria in 1916. It's instantly become one of my favorites.
-
Is the nephew the future Lord Mountbatten?
Possibly. Or not. Prince Louis (Ludwig) of Hesse might be the son , born 1908, of Duke Ernst Ludwig and his second wife Eleonore. In the photo he could be of an age of about five in, say, 1913. This would not be the future Lord Louis.
The boy Louis Mountbatten (then Battenberg)was born in June, 1900, the son of Prince Louis Battenberg and Princess Victoria of Hesse, Alexandra's sister. The age of the boy would be about right for him (early 1900s), but I don't think he'd be called Prince Louis of Hesse, but rather Prince Louis Battenberg, from the father's title. Also, I don't think the IF with Alexandra frequented Livadia much before the New Palace
was built around 1910 or so, which makes the age of the boy Prince wrong. Also, in the years after the Russo-Japanese war and the violence and social unrest following it , the IF didn't travel much , including to Livadia, so this photo is likely post-1910, too late for this boy to be the future Viceroy of India.
I lean towards the boy being Ernie and Eleonore's son (Louis) of Hesse, not the future Viceroy of India.

reply 209 the women in the background is most likely one of her daughters ON or TN or possibly MN. There is a picture of two women wearing the same type hats during the visit to Sevastopol on 13/26 may 1916.
reply 211 It looks like Alexandra is with Dimtri P.

Any guesses who is the child? Could it be Lily Dehn´s son?

As for what they are doing, hard to tell. They are standing in the courtyard near the palace church at Livadia.

The photo is from the 1909-1910 album. I checked and the son was born in 1908, so I guess it's possible.

The caption (in Russian) says that it was taken on board he "Mezhen". That was the river ferry boat that took the Imperial family up the Volga from Nizhny Novgorod to Kostroma during the tricentenary celebrations in 1913.
That is when they visited the Ipatiev Monastery, where Michael, the first Romanov sovereign, was proclaimed Tsar in 1613.

“9 июня - 12 июля 1913 г. Рейд “Штандарт”, Александра Федоровна
Рейд “Штандарт = Roadstead / anchorage of Štandart.
According to the Russian Wikipedia:
К западу от острова [Большой Пограничный], на входе в залив Виролахти, воды Финского залива образуют рейд Штандарт.
=
To the west of the island [Bolshoy Pogranichnyy / Paatio], in the entrance of Virolahti Bay, the waters of the Gulf of Finland form the Reid Štandart / Štandart Roadstead.
С 1906 по 1908 гг. на рейде Штандарт, между островами Каво [Твёрдый] и Патио [Большой Пограничный], регулярно летом вставала на якорь императорская яхта «Штандарт».
=
From 1906 to 1908, in the Štandart Roadstead, between the islands of Kavo [Тvyordyy] and Paatio [Bolshoy Pogranichnyy], the imperial yacht Štandart regularly anchored during summers.
