I've just been notified by Netflix that the series The Last Czars is now airing. It's a six part mini series. I shall post after viewing.
-
I'll admit I'm scared to watch it.
-
As so much else that has been done for the screen, this one seems to draw
on everything "bad" you can possibly dig up. I cant uinderstand why this continues??
Based on rumours rather than facts. Astonishing.

This a regurgitation of the known and usual. Last period in Yekaterinburg, badly done and rushed! It has its merits in places and does a good job with the war period. I am not sure about Father Gregori and AF, seems a little to familiar to me, knowing AF as I do from reading and researching since I was 9, nearly 60 now. But worth an afternoon watching. Shame as I was expecting The Crown. Its to easy too just regurgitate the old rumours and falsehoods.

Seen it now.
No further questions.
No memory of it.
I guess I might not have seen it after all..?
Lets hope so.

While this film has a few mistakes. It is fairly good for someone with limited knowledge of the Romanovs.

The newspaper "The Guardian" has a complete article on this TV-series:

It's hard but probably justified.
I will not watch because I can not imagine actors in roles, but I do not miss a masterpiece. Finally, I regret it, because I would like so much a beautiful film or a beautiful series on the Romanov family.

I came on here to see what people were saying about this, and was amazed to find not many people were talking about it!
I wouldn't have watched it had it not been important for current PhD research, and can confirm that it is poor. One of the main things I can't get past is the casting, why draw on real historical people to only cast people who have little to know physical similarities? The whole thing seems rushed and poorly done.
Although undoubtedly with its own issues, the 70s Nicholas and Alexandra still remains the strongest of film or TV adaptations for me.
I'm eager to hear what more people think about this!

Hi Laura
AS far as I know, "Nicholas & Alexandra" is the only one that depicts a big part of the story of the last Emperor and his family.
There are though other movies. Of course I do not know if you might have seen them, but I would like to mention
"An Imperial Family" (Russian) and "Assassin of the Tsar" (Russian). Both can actually be found on Youtube.
First one is in russian but with english text. This texting is though sometimes VERY fast.
The second movie I mentioned is in english. They are very different from each other, but both are rather good I would say.
In my oppinion both are better than "Nicholas & Alexandra". They do though both depict a much shorter timeperiod.
Regarding casting I would say that "An Imperial Family" is the best one this far, this goes also for interiors and surroundings used.
Kind regards

Ah, 'An Imperial Family', yes I had forgotten about that, an interesting adaptation. Again though, I wasn't particularly struck by the casting for N and A, although largely it was much better.
I do wonder why 'The Last Czar' seems to have had struggled with its casting choices?

I've been wanting to watch it but not sure it if would be worth my time. I admit I'm somewhat of a nitpick when it comes to historical dramas. I'm much more of a documentary person. If anyone has watched it I'd appreciate any feedback.
