I live in Canberra. I lived in Attadale (Perth) in 1998 for work reasons. Over the years my work has taken me to most capital cities of Australia. ;)

I was born in Southern California and have lived here most of my life except for a couple of years in Florida--while my dad, who was in the Marine Corps, was stationed in Pensicola--plus one glorious week in Hawaii, two weeks visiting relatives in upstate New York, and two glorious weeks each in England and in Russia!

I now live in the dangerous but fun north west part of DC. My Grandmother was 100% Ethiopian she came to the United States for college and married my Grandfather of unknown African American ancestry. My dad married my mother who is of mostly German descent on both sides but, they came from Denmark. My Grandfather on my fathers side also says we have Indian in our Family, he names a different tribe everytime so I dont believe him. lol He has no proof. So that makes me a American/German/Ethiopian/Danish by location teenager.

The conditions at the Yousoupov Pavillon somewhat better seeing the situation being straightened with all kind of construction going on, Am really looking forward to my membership in this group.

I visited Coity Castle in South Wales last year which was built by Sir Pagan de Turberville in the 12th century ... just ruins now unfortunately.

My mother's mother is also from this part of the France... And the family tree is quite old , from what I know (Middle Age too, but not as far as 12th c...) My father's side is Slavic and French (the family tree goes back in the French Revolution) and for the Slavic (Russian and Ukrainian) I don't know... I just know my great grand parents' parents' name.: Pomarev, Gharasyn and Kondrashov. As you can see one is missing... Well, I'm also Scandinavian (or Normand or Viking or Varegue as you want!! ;) ;D
It's extraordinary how family tree show our "mixed"roots! I love that! That fascinates me!

Trixie, I live in Fredericksburg as well! Well, technically Spotsylvania, over on the Chancellorsville battlefield, but it's just down Rte 3 from you! :)

I was born in Leipzig, Germany, lived there until I was three, was raised in Canterbury, England (where I consider home and still own the family house), and have since been dragged to the States by my husband. ;) Oh, how I love dual citizenship...;D I have UK and US, and I was eligible for German, but chose not to use it. My parents and brother moved here when I was eighteen and starting uni at Oxford (long live the Turl Street Pub!), though I didn't arrive permanently until I was twenty-one. My heritage: English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh (like my name doesn't make that one completely obvious), German, French, Russian, and a trace of Native American, though I couldn't look less the part if I tried. Eventually, my husband and I are looking at moving me back to England, most likely in Yorkshire. That was decided before, but now, with lovely people like Bluetoria, Alicky, and Martyn, just TRY and keep me from the North! ;)

As long is the second round is on me, I'd say that's more than fair! I imagine it'll be about four to six years before we get there, as my husband needs to get through medical school first, but as soon as humanly possible, I'll be picking out a lovely house in Wensleydale. ;D Oh, I really can't wait!

We must get together as fellow Virginians (for the time being). There is a brew pub in F'burg that I've never tried before and is supposed to be very good.

lol I'm the opposite from your husband. I've been begging mine to take me back to England, though I love being close to my parents, brother, and grandparents. My husband never used to get it when I said that you could blindfold me, put me in a plane, and take me anywhere in the world, but as soon as you put me on British soil, I'd know. Sure enough, we went to see my extended family in England for Christmas, and as soon as I stepped out of the doors at Heathrow, I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and apparently started to glow. England will always be home, but when all is said and done, I'd rather be anywhere with my husband and daughter than in England without them.

Thanks for the good wishes! :) The worst part has been being stuck at home with nothing to do, as my husband's been doing all the cooking and housework so I don't give myself coughing fits, and I can't work (I'm a substitute teacher) until I'm healthy again. It's a good thing I have a few sewing and counted cross-stitch projects, let me tell you. ;) If you'd like, go ahead and PM me, so we don't get in trouble for taking this off-topic. ::) I'd love the chance to get to talk further.

Sunny and our other Virginians, what say you to a dinner at some point this month? Fredericksburg might be an easy meeting point for the people who would be coming from further up north or south, but I'm flexible.

I have the Spaulding nose. :D My aunt, The Aunti-Christ (TM), is fond of saying that when God was handing out noses, I thought He said 'hoses' and asked for one to go around the yard. I finally retorted one day, after several years of this, 'Yeah, well, when God was handing out rears, you thought He said 'beers' and asked for a six=pack.' That shut her up on that subject. ;) ;D

Een snelle uitleg, jammer dat zo weinig mensen Nederlands lezen ;-)) Ik ben een Fabergé ei-fanaat, van kind af de (sporadische) artikeltjes uitgeknipt over Fabergé Eieren, meestal die van Malcolm Forbes. Omdat er niets in het Nederlands bijna niets over was ben ik het gaan maken en daarna gaan vertalen naar het Engels. Had het achteraf beter andersom kunnen doen. Door de eieren en de verhalen die ze vertellen raak je vanzelf in de ban van de familie en de geschiedenis van de Romanovs. En zo is het gekomen ;-))

Hi, Anna!:

Argentinian people loves her little princess! It's a great experience for us. But she isn't really a "common girl". Even if we are a Republican Country, the "Patricians Families" here, are (at least, some of them ;D) from noble roots. Maxima Zorreguieta had nobility roots that goes to far to William the Conqueror or something like this.

She seems so fresh and joyfull, and so does the Crown Prince. ;)

It was awful.

Perhaps you wants to know that Evita fighted to win the right to vote for the women. :)

What a good thing that you read this book. In Spanish it's titled: "La Razón de Mi vida" ("The Reasons of My LIfe"). The Von Weber musical is very inaccurate, and so was the "Madonna" movie. The better one is the movie with Esther Goris and Victor Laplace in it. Pretty accurate, even if she was more older than the real Evita, who died when she was 33.

Als het eenmaal in je zit gaat dat er niet meer uit. Je hebt 't of je hebt 't niet ;) Ik vind het juist ontzettend leuk dat iemand van jouw leeftijd geïnteresseerd ( ja dubbel s ;)) is in geschiedenis. Bij de meeste leeftijdgenoten liggen de interesses toch héél ergens anders. Mijn zoons vinden mij totaal nuts, wie heeft er nu interesse in dooie royals zeggen ze ;D

When people have from origin an other native language they often express themselves in that language when being angry or showing affection. Like my father- he's from Suriname- always scolded us or called us by our pet names in his own language, tho we speak normally Dutch.
Yes, Dutch and German sometimes sounds alike, so it's very easy to pic up.

So you ate a dessert in Castropol! I'll never been there (I didn't go to Asturias, for I couldn't but I visited Spain: Madrid , Barcelona and Zaragoza) but my aunt did and liked it very much. She even saw the house were her great-grandmother had born, and of course, we have lots of photos from there. They spend a while in Tapia de Casariego.

I didn't know about a dessert named "Pijama", but it sounds GOOD! I like caramel and fruits VERY much. ;D

I just came across your post tonight. I, too, went to UNC at Chapel Hill and, after living all along the eastern seaboard, currently live in Elizabeth City, NC. I am totally addicted to all things Russian, especially the Romonovs. I spent almost three weeks in Russia in July.

In the book "Kassandra" written by Christa Wof, she is the girlfriend of Kassandra's brother Troilos and the daughter of a man called Kalchas.
I also looked it up in "The Greek Myths" by Ranke-Graves (who tells the real myths, while Christa Wolf changed many things), it also says that she is the daughter of Kalchas, who knew that Troia would fall and went to the Greeks, his daughter stayed and was in love with the Troian king's son Troilos.

So Christa Wolf didn't change this.

Yes, we Australians rarely think about our background, do we? I mean, apart from a bit of English and Scottish in mine somewhere, I wouldn't have the foggiest! It just isn't talked about here, which is strange, I suppose... ???

We have a census this year. Ethnicity has always been a big part of the census, and up till now we've had choices of 'European', 'Maori', 'Chinese', 'Cook Island Maori' etc etc. This year for the first time there will be a choice of 'New Zealander', which makes sense. That being said, in some ways I am so used to thinking of my 'ethnicity' as being 'European' even though neither born nor bred there, that even though logically 'New Zealander' makes sense, it could seem strange to tick it instead of 'European'.

documented their lives in photos and Anne Frank
did the same [1942-1944] using her diaries [3 of themin fact]. I find a wonderful connexion between Anastasia Romanov and Anne Frank. Both liked being the family clown and had similar personalities. Just my opinion ;D

Aloha all!

I am fortunate enough to live in what many people call "Paradise" -- the Hawaiian Islands -- specifically the island of Kaua'i -- which is the least developed of the major islands (and I hope it stays that way!!!).

I live on the south side of the island in a little town called Koloa, which is about 1 mile from a popular beach called Po'ipu Beach.

I love this place very much and in fact, haven't visited the mainland for about 7 years -- no "island fever" for me!! I'm posting a couple of pictures of the area on the south side of the island, closeby to me -- I enjoy hiking to deserted beaches that I have all to myself (well except for the odd monk seal that comes ashore to sun himself!). There are many things that we do not have on the island (movies, theatre, good shopping, etc.) but the quality of life more than makes up for it to me!
And makes trips off-island to O'ahu a shopping adventure!!

Your post made me do some research as it conflicted with my memory of English political geography. Devon is a county and the cities of Plymouth and Exeter are within its boundries. Cornwall is a county. Devon and Cornwall share the same constabulary and criminal justice board.

I thought in Old Swedish that W and V were interchangeable. I couldn't remember off hand whether the boat's name had been spelt with a W or a V. Men inget problem!

I thought in Old Swedish that W and V were interchangeable. I couldn't remember off hand whether the boat's name had been spelt with a W or a V. Men inget problem!

The boat was spelled with a V as was the name. It's spelt with a W in North America and some other places but in the old swedish books it's a V.

Though, this question is always hard for me to answer. Short of quoting Wordsworth let's just say I was born in Ottawa, Canada, and lived in Massachusettes, Michigan, and California. My Mom was Irish/Catholic-Yankee/Anglican, and my Dad is from Lucknow, India. His family were former Sikhs who converted to Christianity in the 19th century. Okay, way more info than anyone wanted. Got it.

I got interested in Russian history in college. The Cold War was still pretty cold and I wanted to understand what it was all about. Being mostly Irish by temperment, that meant going back to the beginning, or thereabouts. Once into it, I loved the topic and regretted that there were only 2 courses available.

You are really lucky to live in New Hampshire, some of my relatives did way back when ( 18th century/ early 19th), including my Revolutionary War veteran ancestor ( in Plymouth, NH Conway, NH, and Amherst, NH Pelham N. H and Concord, N. H). I've never been to NH, but someday I hope to visit. All the pictures I have ever seen of NH make it look so beautiful- from the pictures, my favorite is the White Mountains area of NH. I myself live in Cornfields USA ( i.e. Iowa).

Yes, Sweden is wonderful in summer with the long nights. I was last there in late June, just after mid-summer, and it never really got dark, just a sort of deep twilight. I was fascinated, as previously I had only been there in winter. I was trying to remember the name of the boats used for the tours of the canals in Göteborg, and I think they are called "padan"...am I correct? I also liked the "fish church" and the fish, which was most delicious.

Believe it or not, I have only been to Berlin once, but it is a fantastic city with a great atmosphere and such a lot of history. In character it is totally different to Stuttgart (or at least I think so).

Interesting that you should say that. My dad was in the Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska during that time. In fact, my mom's engagement ring came from the PX at Elmendorf AFB. I was raised on Alaska stories and one of the most enjoyable nights of my life was hearing my dad talk to my two sons about his time up there. He and my mom went back in 1997 and had a wonderful time.

We moved to West Virginia from Cincinnati, OH when I was four. When my dad was stationed up there, one of his best hometown friends was also there with his wife and little girl - the friend still isn't allowed to say exactly what he did for the AF, but he did have to learn Russian! 8)

Because I was both very interested in knowing the breakdown of where the contributors to the AP forum are coming from and because I'm an uber nerd, I decided track each response the best I could. I've estimated the following...

USA/Canada - 41.4%
Europe - 33.5%
UK/Ireland - 9.5%
Russia - 3.6%
OTHER - 12.1%

For those who claimed to be born/raised in one particular country but are currently residing in another I gave a half credit to the country of origin and a half credit to the country of residence. I really wish I had broken things out by more individual countries. When I first started tracking responses I didn't realize so many of us were from Germany, Netherlands, Canada (separately), etc. But at least this gives a rough estimate for those, probably very few, who are interested!

I consider my self more British than anything as I was raised and educated by British relatives and teachers. Went to British schools, for the most part and served as a British cadet in one of them. And I spend 3-6 months a year in England. Haven't a clue what the family heritage is. I have been told so many stories, I could pick and choose any I like. The Greek & Russian sounds the best though.

Very interesting Robert...where in Pennsylvania were you raised?

I guess you would be one of the folks I'd give a 1/2 American and a half UK credit too then.

But no matter where I was at school, I came back to Gettysburg for school holidays. The Gettysburg relatives were Greek & Russian, though, so that is where some influence came from.

My father was in the Royal Air Force and I was pretty much born on the move (he had a sudden posting and my mother was living temporarily with my grandmother at the time of my birth).

Very interesting, edubs, but that percentage for the US/Canada seems surprisingly low. And is it derived from origins mentioned on this thread? Really hard to say if this topic's respondents are typical of the whole forum. Mayhap not. And how far back did you go to get your data? Just wondering. Anyway, good effort. It's always fun to try to place a poster from their posts or name.

BTW, I'm from upstate New York, near the PA border, and earlier from Long Island,NY. How exotic...

They way I look at it, posters should tell where they are coming from. I do not care about age and all that, but just what the perspective is from their own location, education, et alia. It might be a way of understanding why some posters may look at things.
I think FA would know from registration, but, this is ultimately none of our business.
For instance, who, claiming a nom de interent as Grand Duchess of this or that would want the rest know that he/she might be from the bum-tacky-tacky hinterlands ?

But to answer your question Rodney I actually did go back to the very first page of this topic thread and did my best to track all responses. This is not highly scientific of course and it's possible that I counted a few people twice who may have posted where they were from more than once (a couple of years apart perhaps). Yet there is nothing to suggest it would heavily effect the percentages since it's just as likely that I copied down the same person who twice posted "Germany" as I did mistakenly for someone who claimed more than once that "Chicago" was their home...and so on.

It's also quite possible that this thread doesn't contain an accurate enough sample to be representative of the AP at large. But you don't get much more direct with your "survey" question than to title things "Where do you come from?", lol. But I'm sure there are many current members who haven't posted about where they're from, just as quite a few are probably no longer active members on these forums. Was just for fun really...and you may be on to something about the USA/Canada figure being too low. Is it possible that people are less interested in sharing where they are from, particularly when they assume they are already in the majority of the group, then to hear about the distant places where others are from? This might apply specifically to American members on this site. Some type of thought process along the lines of, "well I'm from NYC but who really cares since lots of people here are from the States...I'm more interested in knowing who is Russian, German, British, Italian, etc"

I agree there's likely a mild bias at work here in favor of the exotic, though if you're from Dagestan or Sierra Leone, for example, small town Pennsylvania might appear pretty sophisticated.

My Dad's mother is my Russian connection, her family fled Russia in the early 1920's first to France then England. I am going to Russia for the first time this august and hope to hook up with some of my relations.

Well what your country lacks in books can be more than made up for by the amazing resources of this website and the members that post here on the forums. Stay around for a while and make some friends and just maybe they'll let you borrow a book or two :-) Otherwise there are ways for you to order books relatively inexpensively online. If you need some direction on where to start (there are many on here that know better than me but feel free to shoot me a PM as well) just ask!
