Title: Who could play the Yusupovs in a movie?
Post by: ashanti01 on April 22, 2005, 09:20:53 PM
::) Crazy idea, just running though my head. If there was to a movie made of the Yussupovs, who could play the stunning Zeneida?

Who was the girl you posted awhile back, the Latin American star? She was lovely! She could play young Zenaida, and possibly be aged. I always thought Kirstie Alley (if her diet succeeds a little more) would make an excellent Zenaida, especially older, like the time Nikolai was shot up to the Rasputin stuff and the revolution and exile. I think Kirstie looks a bit like her in the face, and some of her past acting jobs (like Virgilia Hazard in North and South) make me think she could handle the emotional parts well.

Hi Annie

I knew you would the first to respond.

I thought about Kristie Ally if she lost some weight, she could be the older Zenaida. I would have to go back and find links to show the pictures of the girl I thought would make a lovely young Zenaida.

I'm so terrible, I don't even know how to post pictures.

Hey found her web site

I saw her in a 1900's dress and I thought wow! She would make a very lovely Zenaida

What about Juliette Binoche? She smiles with closed lips just like Zenaida on several photos. And she is pretty good actress.

Now we need just some good manuscripts for a movie, since there has been picked already plenty of actors on other threads too. ;D

I would LOVE to write a manuscript! It's been my dream since I was a teenager to write and produce a miniseries (it would be too long for a movie, maybe a series of movies) about the last years of Imperial Russia! I would include the Yussoupovs as in depth characters too.
Title: Re: Who could play the Yusupovs in a movie?
Post by: ashanti01 on April 26, 2005, 02:14:32 PM
I think we have brought this up before.

It would have to be a mini series because the Yussupov's have so much history and close connections with the Imperial Family that it would be impossible to cram into 2 hours.

Oh, I hope to one day see the mini series come true.

I thought you wanted her to play Ella ???

IMO, she's too old to play either. What is she now, 70? Ella died at age 54, and the actress would have to believably play her from youth to death (which is why I picked Jodie Foster in the other thread) Zenaida did live to be 78, but the movie would cover her younger years up until the revolution when she was in her 50's, so I don't think a woman that age could do this. Besides, she's too blonde, Zenaida was known for her raven haired beauty.

I think Monica Bellucci would be perfect as Zenaida:

It would be a tough role. Kirsty Alley tends to be OTT. How could an actress play a women who was fully trained in ettiqute etc...by age 7? I imagine it would be hard to play the product of about 400 or 500 years of extreme priviledge and wealth and culture. Every nuance of her movements would have to be perfect. That kind of experience I've never seen displayed in a young (under 40 year old) actress and only once in a mature actress. I doubt that the melodramatic performances of an American or British actress would be appropriate. The French cinematic culture is much, much more subtle and tasteful.

If a movie was made about the Y family, or the whole Romanov saga (more detailed than N and A) who do you think would be a good choice to play Felix? Here are my suggestions:

Jared Leto- singer for 30 Seconds to Mars, actor (best known for his role as Alexander's lover in "Alexander")

I really think with his big blue eyes, dark hair and handsome face, he's perfect. Especially with the black eyeliner!

Other considerations:

Joachim Phoenix

Best known for playing Johnny Cash in "Walk the Line", other movies

Tobey Maguire, of "Spiderman" fame. He's got the face too:

So what do you all think, like one of mine? Or come up with your own suggestions!

Or Vitas? If they just make him grow some hair and dye it blonde or something.

I could see Cillian Murphy playing Yusupov in a movie.  Similiar features and he's a rising star.

Also, for Rasputin I could see Ciaran Hinds playing him.  Check out his profile picture on Internet movie database:

I could easily see Orlando Bloom as Felix. They both have those pretty features which are almost girlish.

As for Johnny Depp, I actually see him better suited for the Dmitry role. He has that dark look and I think he could really play that role.

I hope I get to see a Yussupov movie in my lifetime. :-\ A mini series is the only way they could do it justice. There's just too much to cover in just two hours.

Jude Law, of course!  Have you seen him as Lord Alfred Douglas (Bosie) in "Wilde"?  He may be a bit too old now for the early years, but his protrayal as a golden boy of decadence was priceless!

There is an actor on All My Children named Jeffery Carlson.  He is more of a broadway, theatre type, but he has been doing AMC for a special story. He is handsome and eccentric, a bit of a diva, and he looks good in a dress.  He has the exotic look like Felix.  And he is good at foreign accents.  I think he would make the perfect Felix.  (http://www.jeffrey-carlson.com/images/fanphotos/jeffreyfrompetra.jpg)(http://www.jeffrey-carlson.com/images/fanphotos/jeffreyvalerie.jpg)(http://www.jeffrey-carlson.com/images/fanphotos/jeffandshelley.jpg)

Depp could play him in exile but the younger, pre revolutionary Felix, or Dmitry, would have to be younger. They were under 30. I don't think Depp would make a good Dmitri because wasn't Dmitri a blond?

I agee a mini-series would be needed to do the story justice,a movie simply couldn't be that long. The series would take ages to make, all the different seasons and locations:St.Petersburg,Moscow,London,Oxford,New York, the Crimea,Paris. Can you imagine the budget!Who would fund such a thing?Costume designers would be in heaven working on the clothes from the 1880s' to the 1960s'.Paris is often cooperative about such productions, what about the russian cities?Perhaps they would like the publicity and help with the authenticity.Members of this discussion forum could be called in to get the details right! Many splendid jewels would have to be bought or hired or borrowed.Who knows what formerly thought of as lost pieces would turn up.What about accents?Perhaps russian actors would be best, probably wouldn't have a high enough profile though.Who suggested Dame Joan Collins as Pss.Zenaida?Fabulous idea!Young Felix could certainly be portrayed by a british actor such as William Mosely,Orlando Bloom,Cillian Murphy.Jude Law could do it but it'll need to go into production soon or be shot from a distance.Toby Maguire has the look but what a stretch of his acting skills to pull off a character like Prince Felix.Cate Blanchett as Pss.Irene?Certainly  Drew Barrymore looks like GD Marie Pavlovna the Younger.Perhaps Dame Helen Mirren as Alexandra Feodorovna and Dame Judy Dench as The Dowager Empress. The evacuation of the Crimea on the SS Marlborough would take at least one episode[shame Helen Hayes isn't around any more].The MGM court case would take another. The Rasputin murder yet another. How many other episodes?Suggestions as to which parts of Ps.Felixs' life would need a lot of detail and which could be dealt with lightly. His hijinx in mothers clothes as a youth would be entertaining to watch-whipping the horses pulling the sleigh through the early morning streets of St.Petersburg in an evening gown and  wig!Details like his fathers' yearly Sheep Fair in the Crimea with the IF being served champaign amongst the washed and ribbon tied farm animals. The possibilities seem endless at first.Such a series would have to run for months. The boxed dvd set would sell well.

A brilliant idea! A series on Felix's life!! Rasputin was just one [very important] chapter in a fascinating life that man had. classic BBC production would be 12-13 episides. Costumes and jewels would not be a problem,  the suppliers have tonnes of that stuff, and what they do not- they make and re-hire later. I do not know how well a boxed dvd set would sell, but I would certainly buy it!

A mini series is the way to present the story of the Youssoupov’s and their last years in Imperial Russia.

I think it would have to begin with Zenaida and her role as mother. Remember she was also a very close friend of Grand Duchess Elizabeth and Grand Duke Serge. This would show how close the Youssoupov’s were to the Imperial family. People today think of Felix only as the man who killed Rasputin and who happened to married to the Tsar’s only niece. Not many people realize how close his family was to the Imperial family or how influential they were in Russian society.

Felix would need to be covered in several parts; as a child, curious teenager and troubled young man. We also have to explore his relationship with his father and brother, of which very little is known. An important factor too would be his relationship with Irina.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder why no one had made a Youssoupov movie. If Hollywood can make ‘Snake’s in a Plane’ (Horrible movie), why not something more serious and interesting?

I agree, Ashanti. It should start with his mother, a fabulously beautiful woman with a story of here own.[ Fascinating lives all around. However, I would follow the story up to the movie studio lawsuit- which they won- in the 1930's.
Fascinating lives, all around.

I think it should cover his years as an old man as well, not just up until the "Rasputin and the Empress" lawsuit. They could also show him testify against Anna Anderson in the "Anastasia" trials. I really think someone ought to make a movie like this, and I can't believe no one in Europe has thought about it. I mean, there are like a hundered "Rasputin" movies, why not one on Felix? The man who finally had the balls to get rid of him?

I wish someone would REALLY make a movie/series on Felix. It'd be interesting to see how his life was during exile. But if someone were to play him, hopefully he'd be an uknown actor..or someone who's not too famous. I mean, Toby is awesome but he will always remind me of Spiderman! lol

Other than my fave- Johnny Depp, John Barrowman could do it. At least as an adult Fekix.
As for his really older years...well, he was not very active from WW2 and after. Perhaps a "remebering his past bit?   If I recall correctly, they remained in Paris during the occupation but did not collaborate, or at least were never accused of it

John Barrowman-excellent suggestion!David Bowie could lend his hand to an older Felix.A series about the Yuossoupovs should indeed show their closeness to the IF and their social influence.Sir Ian McKellan would make a sterling Grand Duke.Which one?The lovely Liv Tyler could play which young Grand Duchess?

I was watching the trailer for "The Young Victoria" and I realized Rupert Friend could play Felix in a movie.

In his 30th Felix had rather dark brown hair & turquoise-transparent green eyes as well as his mother. Is there an actor with such features today? Maybe in Germany of UK? )))
