I think the Queen Elena is worth of a personal thread.
This topic is so intended to be a sort of Album of Her life.

She was 1,74cm tall and her husband was 1,56cm or 1,58cm tall.
-
Yes,because Montenegro was an Orthodox country, and she was Lutheran and yet a Crown Princess of a very religious people,so she had to change her religion! If you were reading any book about Queen Elena you might have noticed that there were quite a few problems with her family because she also changed her religion and became a Catholic! Her mother Queen Milena did not even participate the wedding because of that, and it was aranged for her to change her religion on a boat between Montenegro and Italia, and not in Italia!

When did Elena die? I notice all of her children except for unfortunate Mafalda had long lives.
-
Why cannot she be buried in Italy [the Pantheon ?], the living Savoys have been allowed to return ? Does this mean that Umberto II and his father VEIII are still buried outside of Italy ?

this is true: Umberto II and Maria Josè are in the chapel of Hautecombe (Savoy), where are buried many medieval Savoia.
VE III is in the church of Santa Caterina, Alexandria of Egypt, Queen Elena is in France....
They all should be buried in the Pantheon with the other Kings of Italy (VE II, Umberto I and Margherita).
Or at least in Turin, in the royal Chapel of Superga, where are all the other Savoia (Dukes, Kings of Sardinia, Carlo Alberto, Maria Pia of Portugal...). Also the recent ones, such as Irene of Greece...

was Queen Elena popular in her adopted country??
She was one of the most loved Queens. Even if her husband is still very criticized nobody ever spoke about her unrespectfully.
She spent the whole life helping the poors!
-

Queen Elena not only was popular, she was beloved, italians soon understood they could completely trust this marvellious woman who used to spend all her civil list to help poor people.
About this, there is a funny anedocte, one day Vittorio Emanuele III was walking in the gardens of Villa Savoia, with his gardener.
At a certain point the King tells the gardener something like "You know everybody says I am stingy (mean), but I must be so, if I weren't, with all the money that the Queen spends for her poors, We would go to rack and ruin".
For all these reasons Queen Elena was given the Golden Rose of Christianity.

A great book for photos is Casa Savoia by Princess Marie Gabrielle. I got an old Illustrazione from Margherita's death and funeral. It had tons of great photos, including some from her childhood. If I get my scanner up and working (it keeps shutting my computer down :( ) I'll try to scan & post some. Margherita is one of my favorites.

She was not only fond of fishing, it was a life long passion. She had so many equipments that at the end of ww2 the london shop (it was bombed) where She had bought everything asked her to sell them back a part of the equipments in order to start again their activity
I'll find some pics for you, but there are very few photos becouse she did not like being photographed when she was fishing-relaxing

Jelena's official debut was at the Smolny Institute Annual Ball in 1888. The 24 year old heir to the Russian throne invited her to open the ball with a pollonaise. St Petersburg was full of rumours that they would have a Slav rather than a German Empress. Sadly a distressing incident happened at a ball hosted by the Yusupovs in 1890. A quarrel broke out between two noblemen over her dance partner which ended in a duel. Prince Arsen of Serbia wounded Baron von Mannerheim ( future ruler of Finland) and the scandal led to the Princess being recalled to Cetinje. However this brought her to the notice of the Queen of Italy who was worried at the biological inbreeding of the royal house (and would be a useful political bridge into the balkans). Prince Vittorio Emanuelle met his future Queen in May 1896 on the occasion of the Tsars coronation in Moscow, it was love at first sight.
This is from " the Court of king Nikola" by petar cukovic

No, they met for the first time in Venice in 1895, there were the King, the Queen, the Prince of Naples and Princess Jelena with her sister Ana and her mother
-
Must admit I thought it was rather a romantic book . I bought the book in the palace bookshop a few days ago and read it on the plane back. It has some good pictures and will sit next to Andje Kapcic's book

I think it was love at first time for the Prince, who was completely unaware, while the Princess had been told by her father of a possible marriage but she liked him very much, though he was very short.
-
Well he was, inherited from his mothers side.

AWWWWW!!! I love Queen Elena she is my FAVORITE queen.

sadly she was not wanted by the italians..... and I do believe she persuaded the King to flee Rome in the closing days which doomed the monarchy

Yes and he was heavily wounded in St.Peterburg by Prince Arsen of Serbia because of her in his youth....

Well, you can see why Baron Mannerheim was her first love! ;) but I am glad her Marriage turned out well!
-
Baron Mannerheim kept on sending her flowers on her Name day every year untill the '50s
In the "Nikola and Milena" book on the Montenegros that fact is put like a myth.
-
It is also mentioned in the biography of Queen Elena by Renato Barneschi(maybe my spelling is wrong)...
-
Don't worry, your spelling is correct. :)

I think too it is not probably true, besides I think the King would not have been particularly happy of that (he was quite jealous). In any case I must add that on her name day (18th august) she received hundreds of telegrams and flowers from everywhere ( I read this in the court diaries of the summer residence of Valdieri, where the Royal Family used to spend august) so one never knows.
-
It is said so in her biography by Renato Barneschi...also that her husband brought her roses from the garden himself every morning ;)

Elena married Viktor in 1896 but gave birth to her first child only in 1901. Five years without children which was in this time quite unnormal. Does anybody know why? Did she have misscarriages, didn't get along with her husband or etc.?
-
Maybe they wanted to wait a few years before popping out babies left and right like every royal? I don't know. But their marriage was a love match.

FINALLY. I've searched on the forums all day to find out who this person was...I found what I assume to be a reproduction portrait of Queen Elena at a local used book store...its a medium size in a ornate gilded frame. It looks more like a framed coloured photograph than a painting. Its the image of her on the throne looking to the right with the trefoil-like tiara on...its only 32.oo, I'm definitely going to get it. I mean its not Sissi or Alexandra so I'm assuming these must be rare...
