This thread has rendered me speechless.  I'm between screeching laughter and jaw-dropping incredulity... :o

SOPHIE - is the woman deliberately trying to look totally absurd?  As far as I can see, her (or the tax payer's) money would be far better spent on a good hairdresser to get rid of those rat tails.  She has no taste.  ::)

The late PRINCESS MARGARET - always looked like her clothes were made out of old damask curtains but these pictures make her look almost like some sort of bizarre clown!

Incredibly, Anne looks better than these two!  She may be dowdy and dated but at least she doesn't look ridiculous! Absolutely unbelievable.

Thanks, Grand Duke, have been tittering about this thread throughout the day.  ;D

Yes, thank Grand Duke for a wonderfully entertaining thread.

Some of those hats are no more extreme than those worn in the early 20th century when it was possible to find WHOLE birds ticked within the folliage.

Grace and Tsaria

I'm glad you liked this thread. So I must continue to post more photos of these beautiful royal hats!

About birds in hats, I remember that 18th century wigs were so exaggerate: very tall, ornated with fruits, leaves, jewels and living rats. The rats lived inside the wigs and eat the wax and tissue which the wigs were made.  :-/

Aw, shouldn't they get cut some break since many of those hats were at Ascot, the grand event of bad hats?

Now as for Princess Anne, isn't her C&C wedding outfit the same as seen in the carriage picture with Pss Margaret?

Eugenie started using sophisticated hats when she was younger:

Remember the old days when hats actually went on one's head?   ;D ;D :o :o

TampaBay, don't you think that Eugenie's hats are far too sophisticated (not to mention hideous, most of them) for a 15 year old girl?  ??? ;D ;D ;D

Grace

No, I think Eugenie's hat are just plain ugly.  Nothing sophisticated about any of her choices.  They do not even match her clothes.  Ugly! Ugly! Ugly!

Thay all look like they are attending a Shriner's Fund Raising Picnic or the Kentucky State Fair and won those hats at a "ring toss" game.  Three tries for a quater!

That's a brilliant idea, Grand Duke.   That boring old thing called copyright might give you a headache or two!

Having said that - I still think it is a great idea.   I would begin with Victoria, times nicely with the birth of photography.

What a wonderful site.  Grand Duke-you are mahvelous.

Cookie looks pretty good in green.  And the Queen has the best taste in clothing ensembles of the whole bunch! She went through a real dowdy period, 1960's, but since the 1980's she transformed herself with beautiful and bright colors.  She must have been going through Vogue with Diana.  ;D

Princess Michael's hat reminded me of a fishing net for some reason, and I thought it was an odd, though somehow appropriate choice for her.  In case there are any £20 notes flying about, it would catch them!

Zara's purple number would look terrific on the head of a ventriloquist's dummy.  Does anyone remember Wayland and Madame?

The words "springtime garden" come to mind here.  I wonder what in the world they did with Cookie's wardrobe after her death?  Can you imagine QEII, Camilla, and Anne rifling through her closets?

"I want that dress."
"Give this hat to Sophie."
"You could get some miles out of this dress, Anne."
"I'll take that lovely pastel frock."
"Maybe Zara could alter this one."

I'll bet they were secretly glad poor Margaret wasn't there....

What an utterly delightful thread!  I have been weeping with hysteria at some of these images.......

I am slightly disappointed that Camilla is so poorly represented on these pages, but will concede that the skunk headdress really beats the pants off all the others in terms of hideosity.......

Grateful thanks to all who have contributed - much pleasure is to be derived from viewing these millinery faux pas........ ;)

I have to say that I don't think that hat is nearly as awful as some of the other fashion horrors seen on these pages.......I'll bet that this ensemble probably looked good in posed photographs.

Plus, The Dss of Kent can be excused almost anything, as she is such a wonderful person.........

I'm glad to read that.

I think that the duchess usually looks pretty good in whatever she wears, and is still a most attractive and stylish woman, which is a good eal more than can be said for most of the Windsor women, even some of the younger ones!

That earlier image of Zara Philips is a perfect example of this.  She seems amply to bear out all the reservations that I have ever had about her style and taste, appearing to have more in common with the local barmaid's taste in fashion than any member of her family.

Still style is obviously not in the genes in that particular branch of the family and she has never really had much a role model to copy; not surprising that she seems to be adrift stylistically nowadays........

I think Anne looks extremely nice in the above outfit.  As nice as I have seen her look in along time.

This goes to prove she can look stylish when she wants too!

Yes, Anne does not look so "retro" here - quite nice.

One thing that must be said for Anne is that she has always kept a trim figure - no doubt that's why she can squeeze into all those 30 year old dresses!  :D

By the way, GDK, the Eagles will go down on Saturday...  ;D

I'm sorry to say this, truly. She looks ridiculous. The hat is just too much, too much brim, too much feather. How much better she would be served by restraint. Can you just imagine the elegance of a pillbox style with a small amount of veil ?In a matching blue Shade?Much more suitable for the occasion at hand,Or WAS  this ,the EASTER PARADE?-D

She has quite a pleasant smile in these photos. The large hat conceals those twinkling eyes.I'd LOVE to see her in smaller hats. The bold blue is wonderful on her,as rich pink would be.Please no jokes but sincerely she would look sensational in red.We have all commented on the Rich purple,so suitable as well.I do like her in linen and velvet for fabric choices. The milliner has not her best interest in my regard, she needs the right look.Large, ornate hats have their spotlight on certain occasions.I wonder if she is conciously modeling her choices, based on the late Queen mother.-D

Actually,on second thought remove the feathers and lift it up a bit.Add a hat ribbon in the same shade of the hat with a small bow to the back,Voila, understated elegance.Emmie,if only she would consult US!-D

That's the hat she wore at the naval review in the Solent which marked the Trafalgar celebrations.

I thought it looked fantastic in repose - as it were.   In the breeze, these ostrich feathers are wild.   She looks, unlike that flightless bird, as if she is about to take off...wheeeeeee.

Looking at that smile(she looks so similar to Charles doesn't she?)I'm moved to say,I wish her the best.None of us are perfect, and I feel she has suffered tremendously and probably will always have to deal with the most unpleasant situations and attitudes. For this I wish her strength and fortitude.I also truly hope that whatever has made her smile so on this day,in this photo, wll find it's way to her often. She looks very happy and relaxed.-D

I liked the hat on the Duchess of Cornwall when I saw it posted awhile back---it was just a head shot, and the feathers were still. But seeing her full length with the hat, and the feathers in motion is quite a different story. The Duchess might be advised to avoid hats that have been put on steroids! If it blew off her head, it could injure any hapless bystander, or give the Prince of Wales bruises or worse. Let's hear it for hats with brims that are not wider than Camilla's shoulders, at the very least. As noted above, why oh why not a generous pillbox ala Mrs. Kennedy? Since the hair is not going to change, that style would work the best, and not be a WMD on a breezy day.

It would definitely seem that Camilla is a bit too deferential to her millner's personal style.  Here's an snippet from the Mirror about her latest feather fiasco.

Her visit to Victoria Embankment marked the latest in a series of occasions in which she has worn designs by Irish milliner Philip Treacy. The fashion maestro also provided the Duchess with headwear for her wedding day, Royal Ascot and a recent Buckingham Palace garden party.

And it would seem her fondness for the designer is reciprocated, because he has been singing her praises of late. "She's letting me make the sort of hats I love," he said. "She is the dream client for me."

I have always been fairly ambivalent about her myself.

But, of late, other sides of her character have become apparent behind that sometimes overly sweet, benevolent smile.

She was quite a morale booster for the British people and particularly Londoners during WWII but I believe she and her family left London each afternoon for the safety of Windsor, though this was probably not solely her decision... :)

Probably by today's expectations of Royalty, she didn't really achieve all that much, IMO.

Yes, fair enough too, Bluetoria.

Then again, if for nearly a century, I'd had my every whim catered for, my children raised by servants, my home/s immaculately cared for by a massive staff, and I'd never had the responsibility of a proper job, I'd probably have the stamina to stand there at 100 years of age, receiving the "gratitude" from a fawning but naive general public too...  ???

On the other hand, if I had been waited on hand-and-foot all my life I might think, "Well now I'm 100, I can take the weight off my legs and sit down and someone will wait on me!"

However, she didn't! She stood up and smiled....(I don't have any great fondness for the Queen Mother, but I do admire devotion to duty.  ;))

...she stood up and smiled...WOW!

Sorry, but honestly, I think that is virtually all she did during her long and pampered life.  ;)

I have to second Bluetoria's sentiments. Many a spoiled matron has not had one percent of the QM's physical stamina, and it was amazing, especially when you take into account all those gin-and-dubonnets!

Physical stamina?  Standing up and waving?  ??? ::)

During the review that took place on the Horse Guards Parade Ground a couple of weeks before her actual 100th Birthday, the QM did stand for several hours, declining the chair that had been provided. Whatever I think of her, that demonstration of physical stamina was pretty impressive. My own 80 year old mother could have handled that standing bit for about ten minutes, and even seated in a chair would have begged off after about 90 minutes.

I absolutely adored the QM.I was very disappointed to learn this adoration was severely misplaced, after all she appears the epitome of a sweet and kindly Grandmother. :-[

Me too, Donielle. I'm shocked to learn how many people in this Forum don't like QM because the idea I had, in my country, was that everybody in UK loved her!
I think you are been very harsh and cruel to her: you're only accusing her of minor things like gin, teeth and eyebrows. Don't talk about the money she spended and that she was spoiled - every royal is the same or worst!

I also think she saw her position as Queen as a duty and did her job very well, since she didn't expect to become Queen:
- she helped her husband in many personal and political problems (George VI's stammer and WW2)
- she was considered by Hitler "the most dangerous woman in Europe"
- she was a devoted wife and mother
- she was one of the few who care for Diana
- she was the only who was against Charles and Camilla's wedding (she was old but not stupid or insane)

She had her faults but she also had very good qualities, like everybody else! Look at Prince Eddy...  ;)

But back to the topic...

I agree with the Grand Duke. I think the reason most people dislike the QM is because of a devotion to the Duchess of Windsor, which I certainly don't possess . . .

GD, all my resources say that the QM and Diana's maternal grandmother, lady-in-waiting and friend, Lady Ruth Fermoy were actually two of the people who pushed the relationship along, hoping Diana and Charles would marry.

Diana also debunked the widely held idea that the QM had somehow supported her during her engagement and marriage to Charles.  She even said that the QM had made available her various residences for Charles and his mistress to meet!

Apart from her long life of doing little, this is another reason I am no fan of hers.

The Grand Duke,

I think a case can be made for Edward sympathizing with the Nazi.  (I do not say I believe it but the case can be made.)

However, Wallis is another story.  Wallis simply went along with what the Duke wanted to do because it was a losing battle trying to fight him, Plain & Simple!

I think Wallis was relieved to be out of Europe, closer to the USA and closer to her Americans Friends.

This is the first time I have seen the Queen Mother praised on this forum, and it's great to see it! Thank you, Grand Duke - I really admire the QM, faults and all. She was a rare woman, a wonderful Queen Consort and a good mother. Out of respect to someone who did such a lot for Britain, I could not smear her name, particularly now that she has passed on, and I don't understand how others can either.

.All of the above is untrue.Unfortunately, what you have mistakenly taken for facts are untruths.Research ,and you will learn the truth.Although it seems your intense dislike of this couple may indeed bias any of the information you may find.BTW,They were sent to the Bahamas ,because they were not welcome in England.Edward had repeatedly told The British government he wanted a job to serve his country. He was denied a job on English soil, thus sent to the Bahamas, which pleased Edward because Wallis would serve with equal status..If he were indeed  a Nazi sympathizer I'm sure Hitler would have given him a great job!EdwardVIII loved his country.I''ll also have you know,EdwardVIII was not a bookend in the Bahamas,he did a superb job. I've opened this topic up for all who wish to learn more, about who these people REALLY were.

It is fascinating to read how polarised opinions are about the Windsors and the QM.

As Tampa says, there is room for all to air their views, although perhaps there should be a thread devoted especially to this topic.

So let's get back to the hats.  And for what it is worth, I had quite forgotten just how ghastly the QM's taste was.  That image of her in that hideous yellow creation had me sobbing with laughter, as it brought to mind the nickname that the children of one of the members (I forget which one) had for Cookie.....

'Old Yeller'.....teeth and hat to match....... :D

PS I have just been to see the White Wardrobe Exhibition at BP, so expect my update some time soon.....

I would volunteer that Sophie of Wessex's hats are far, far more ghastly than anything ever worn on the head of the Queen Mother.

The Queen Mother's hats were never high fashion, but they did suit her and her royal role, whereas, her granddaughter-in-law's millinery creations make her look simply ridiculous...

I have been laughing my head off at the hats in this discussion thread.  Some of them are truly awful - and I bet they were expensive to boot.  Sadly though I can't decide whether Sophie Wessex gets the prize, or if it goes to Zara Phillips in that horrendous daisy hat and tarty frock.  And, talking of that horrific dress, is that a bra strap showing??  Didn't she look at herself in a mirror before leaving?  A dress with a high split looks good if you've got nice legs (and Zara has) but this dress looks like it's been made by a committee - it's neither for day or night and the hat plonked on the top is dreadful.

Sophie Wessex's fondness for these flying creations must be curbed by someone.  The 'thing' she wore to Ascot looked like a prop from the XFiles and I fully expected to see Mulder and Scully lurking around.  Either that or SkyTV are sponsoring her ...

I am no fan of The 14 Karat Beauty (Queen Mother)!  But, in her defence, I do have to say that she never, ever committed fashion sins that rendered her as cheap and tacky looking as her great granddaughter Zara Phillips, nor did she ever appear as absurd looking (even as a 39 year old "ingenue"!) as her granddaughter-in-law Sophie Wessex with her futuristic style "creations" pinned over her stringy rats tail hair somewhere near her ear.   ???  ::)

It's not necessarily just Cixi's headgear, but it's those nasty long fingernails that look like claws. (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/13/Cixi3.jpg) I also think that the pear webbed cape could have been done without, however, this wasn't necessarily the Dowager Empress's fault. As beautiful as the Manchu court robes were also, I'm sure they cost an arm & a leg to manufacture. I think the worst extravegeance was during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (http://www.barras.org/images/great_wall/emperor_qianlong.jpg), but the Manchu empresses's garb were quite showy (http://www.hostallero.com/images/empress08.jpg)

Yes, not a flattering ensemble for "Nessie" at all, I'll agree, Scothistle - that's why I posted it!  I see what you mean about Whatever Happened To Baby Jane -  she needs an extra slash of dark red lippy though... ;)

However, the bloom of youth and the right faces and figures are no excuse for those other two to bring ridicule to the House of Windsor in my opinion.  Sophie wouldn't look too bad if she'd get a new milliner and hairdresser but the other one is beyond help... ::)

Some of these hats remind me of a country song about a guy whose wife wants a fur coat. He gets an opprotunity to fill his wife's wishes when he hits a dog while driving his car & for Christmas (or was it her birthday) the wife recieves a dog-skin coat. He also had a plan in the wings for a fur hat, which reminds me of some of these hats I've seen.

Speaking of hats made from dead animals...

If you look closely you can see the very tip of a kitten's ear on the right side of Sarah's hat.  This hat was designed to look like a normal beret from the front, but in actuality it was modeled on a sleeping kitten. It was made by Marina Killery, who was a favoured milliner of the Duchess. This was Christmas, 1987, according to the book Royal Style Wars.

In fact, her black fur hat was inspired by the military bearskin hats that often surround her in her official role.

About Mary Donaldson's hat - it is too big, she needs to rise her head because she can't see properly and her face is hidden (if were in a crowd to see her, you only would see her hat). The hat just looks like a paper-basket upside down.

This hat Maxima is wearing may be big and bright but, in my opinion, it is tasteful and looks gorgeous on her.

When, like the previous one she's wearing here, a hat is so big, so bright and so flamboyant, it looks preposterous and is way too much of a "fashion statement" as no one even notices the person underneath it!  Maxima's young and pretty for sure but did any one notice that in the first pic posted of her?  I doubt it - she's just all hat.  ;)

Well I think that she probably was Arleen.

I think that it was GDElla who suggested that there might be a link between the passing of the QM and the revitalisation of the Queen's wardrobe, which has, of late, been splendid.

The amazing Mrs Gertrude Shilling!  She made a habit of wearing outrageous hats to Royal Ascot and probably got more TV coverage than the Royals did.  Her hats were certainly fun - and I distinctly remember one that was a galleon in full sail - abolutely divine and totally hysterical (though wouldn't want to borrow it).  Sadly, she's no longer with us ... she brought a bit of fun to Ascot.

If only Anne and Sophie could learn

Gertrude Shilling - what a gal!  ;)

Sophie Wessex would adore that hat and its overly large satellite dish qualities....not only could she pick up her hubby's terminally dull TV programmes on it, but probably pictures of Mars as well!  :D :D :D
Title: Re: Royal Hats
Post by: KatieAnn on November 14, 2005, 10:01:42 AM
Yep, Gertrude Shilling certainly brought a bit of fun to the po-faced world of horse racing.  Anyone would think Royal Ascot was all about the horses - while those of us in the know appreciate that it's really all about who's there, what they're wearing, how they're wearing it, and are any of the riff-raff wearing a cheapo knock-off copy of the same!

Sophie's engagement photos were ruined by black court shoes - she wore that gorgeous Tomasz Starewski (sorry, I can't spell his surname!) grey silk suit with bits of beading that just made it zing - and wrecked the ensemble by wearing sensible shoes.  She needed straps and heels - not clumpy gardening ones borrowed from the QM's wardrobe.  Her hats are a universal disaster and she's a RRF (Right Royal Frump).  The worst dresser of course is Anne who is a RRGF (Right Royal Grumpy Frump).  When Sophie gets back to wearing nice hats without a bird strike or satellite dish in sight, it'll be a relief to us all.  When Anne buys something that says 2005 (as opposed to 1975) we'll all cheer!

I aim to please!  But, what else CAN they be??  Neither woman is blessed with a modicum of fashion sense, and they both refuse to get advice or help from anyone in the fashion industry.  I suppose in a way that's why Diana was such a fashion icon.  She wore some frights when she was newly married, but they were quickly relegated to where fashion disasters die and were never seen again.  Her style evolved over the years and she looked gorgeous.  (I've just realised I'm speaking to you Martyn - preaching to the converted I know - but you'll understand!)

Anne and Sophie don't try because the feel they don't have to.  The rest of us mortals want to shine with our fashion sense, but money and occasion don't often permit it.  It irritates me beyond believe the RRF and RRGF let us down so badly.  Can we swap them for Mary and Maxima please??

PS:  You're right - Trixie's hat looks like it's had a fight with a cat - and lost.  Yeuch!
Title: Re: Royal Hats
Post by: Martyn on November 14, 2005, 11:32:32 AM
:D - 'a fight with a cat'....when I grow up I want to be as witty as you katieann...... :)

I had a big argument on Saturday night about this very topic with a very good friend of mine, who is one of the best dressed women that I have ever met.

She insisted that Diana had no real taste or style, even in the final years, and that she was simply working with the right people, and could afford to do so.

I disagree with this totally, as I think that she found and honed her style over the years; had she lived, I think that she would be still the most glamorous female British royal.....The point being that these other royal women can work with good designers, and they can afford good clothes, so why did she get it so right, and they get it so wrong?  Taste must have played its part.

I think that Sophie Wessex does try but just doesn't have a clue.  Whoever dresses her is either just as clueless, or perhaps overruled.....I have always thought that her main style thrust was to be a Diana replacement, but she has only ever been but a poor copy.....

Anne is beyond redemption, although on occasion looks presentable.  This is usually mitigated by the knowledge that her dress is prehistoric, which for me tends to take the success out of the effect, as I don't believe that she has any grasp of the concept of 'vintage', but instead has a very good understanding of parsimony.

I also agree that we could do with a Mary and a Maxima.  Personally I dont think that Beatrice and Eugénie will ever quite match up to these glamorous princesses, and that we will have to hope for some beautiful and elegant imported brides.......

I think this has SO much to do with their inherent interest and attitude toward clothes and fashion.
Diana was interested, enjoyed shopping, would spend extra time on fashion.  It's been my impression that Princess Anne and The Queen (and perhaps Sophie) are satisfied with the minimum necessary to  be properly turned out...no loose threads, outfits comfortable enough to wave in, part of the job.

Royals have limited disposable time and some of them would just rather use it in a 6-mile walk in the rain.

I must admit that I'm sympathetic because I'm a woman who is totally bored by shopping and avoid it as much as I can.  Most of us have tried to imagine what it would be like being royal and to me the worst would be the time one has to devote to clothes...and the comments on them by press and public.

Personally I cannot imagine anything more dreary than a six mile walk in the rain with a load of wet old dogs (and no I don't mean Anne and Sophie.... ;) )......

Naturally shopping, dressing and looking good enough to eat would be top of my list of priorities of being royal, along with trying to do as much real good as was humanly and royally possible to justify my existence......

One thing that I would have in common with Pcss Anne would be not to give a rat's rear (to coin a phrase beloved of GDElla) about what any jumped up media monkey thought of how I was turned out (which naturally would be exquisitely... ;) )!

However, I would always heed and defer to the style gurus amongst the membership of the AP Forum....... ;)

I remember reading that Diana's sisters dragged her off to Vogue before the wedding to get 'help' with her clothes.  Ok, so some of them were a bit frumpy for a girl of 20, but we could all see that the Mark I style would emerge and she'd blossom.  And, of course, she had the height and body shape to carry off most outfits.  I've said it before, but you could have handed Diana a burlap sack and she'd have accessorised it to a T and worn it with style that would make grown men weep (yes, Martyn, even you!).

Sophie and Anne are walking disasters; and Beatrice and Eugenie will need careful help to avoid the "Zara Spears/Britney Phillips" look - a totally mixed up t*rt.  Zara, like her mother, looks fab in riding gear (and on a wet, boggy moorland too no doubt) but some of her frocks and hats should be cremated instantly as they look cheap, nasty and too tight.

The only thing that will help our Royal Ladies back into the limelight is (a) help from Vogue and/or Vanity Fair (b) a decent hairdresser (c) proper lingerie to wear under ANY outfit (d) NICE SHOES (e) good hats (no feathers, fur or frills - and nothing that's over than 2 years of age.

Rant over - and back to work I go!

JTTPPR, just give up on her.  She will never alter her ways now.....hair like tumbleweed, dresses like old curtains.....it is a lost cause.....

But you are 100% right about good style being essental to a princess, and it doesn't have to be expensive or ultra-fashionable.  It is more about grooming, poise and knowing what suits and is appropriate to the occasion.....

Martyn and Tampa bay should dress all of us!  We'd look divine and really stand out!

I agree with the sentiment that the York girls should learn NOW about proper styling and presentation.  It does matter.  I'm a civil servant and we have no dress code at work.  You wear what you like, when you like and no-one can comment.  Sounds like a good idea in theory, but we've had people come in for interview in low-slung jeans and cropped tops; football shirts (both soccer and American varieties!); mini skirts and Reeboks - the list goes on.  It seems that smart is out; and casual rules the waves.

Anne and Sophie we should consign to the "Cookie" school of styling.  They'll wear the same kind of outfits from now till doomsday cracks.  Zara might turn it around when she gets rid of those sl*tty dresses she's so keen on; and only time will tell with Beatrice and Eugenie.  I hope for their sakes Sarah York takes them in hand and gets their wardrobes sorted before we end up with another couple of horrors on our hands (heaven forbid).  My brother refers to Sophie as "Princess Sofa" because it looks like sofa fabric's been used to make her frocks!  Delicacy (and the FA's wrath!) prevents me from saying what he calls Anne!
Title: Re: Royal Hats
Post by: Martyn on November 15, 2005, 10:52:46 AM
That also prevents me from telling you what I call Pcss Anne!  ;)

You are on the money, katieann.  Pcss Sofa and her dress partner Anne are lost causes, fit only to cause us continued mirth as they plumb the depths of fashion faux pas.....

Cookie-style is a very good way to describe their choices; in a way though they are far worse than she, in that she found a style (hideous though it was) and stuck to it for fifty years, while Sofa experiments endlessly (and especially with wacky headgear) and Anne tries to con us that she really does spend her generous income on clothing by altering the sleeves of something that was hideously ugly and unfashionable the first five times that she wore it, twenty years ago....

I would love to see what JTTPPR would put them in.....any suggestions duchess?

If Sophie would lose 20 pounds, I would dress her much as Diana dresssed for daywear.

If Anne would cut and style her hair, Ralph Lauren, Armani and Donna Karan-simple, no bells, no whistles just long clean lines to show off her small waist, broad shoulders and long lean legs.  Almost a slight variation on Sarah York's current style.

If Anne will not cut & style her hair, she should just stay as she is and not waste any money only acheiving half marks.

I have no problem with the style of the hat.  My problem is with the color!!!  [/b]Why is the hat off-white or yellow in color when the suit is clearly white-white?  ??? ??? ???

I wonder if she is wearing balck court shoes borrowed from her mother.

It could be that she was following fashion. I believe it was a year ago or so when it was fasionable to wear white with cream or off-white. I never really got this trend, and since it's out again, it looks like no one else got it either.

I must have missed this trend......

Presumably the effect would be enhanced by teaming the cream hat with bag and shoes to match?

Like Tampa, I just hope that she wasn't wearing black shoes....... ::)

Welcome to the Baord, Grant - hope that you enjoy posting with us....

And you are right, it is Zara - Tampa must be having an off day!  ;)

I do think that the skirt is bit short, but she does have great legs and it isn't treason is it, to show so much royal leg (or is she royal, can never remember.....?)  ;)

NAAOTMA, I doubt that Zara is a 'pearl girl', and judging by the raciness of some of her outfits, can't really seeing her observe the 'nothing sparkly before noon' rule, can you?!  ;)

Honey, you're getting confused!  Anne and Sofa are interchangeable.  Zara is a thread (no pun intended!) all by herself!

I like the suit, the hat and shoes are blah, there's no bag either.  She needs strappy heels (she can take the car to church instead of trying to negotiate cobblestones in 4 inch heels), a sexy little clutch purse and some jewellery.

She's not beyond redemption but it's a close-run thing!

God, Cookie's hats were awful!  Love the pearls though - very jealous of them.  She's wearing 4 strands in one photo; and 3 in the others.  Wonder if these are the 3 strands the Queen constantly wears now?  Incidentally, I think the Queen's dress sense (for the want of a better phrase) has vastly improved since Cookie's death - I wonder why?

Katieann, this has not gone unnoticed by quite a few.

It would appear that Cookie's influence (or dominance) was all pervading throughout her years as matriarch of the Royal Family... :-/

I mean - one can't be certain - HM may have simply found someone different to dress her - but it's very coincidental, isn't it?
Title: Re: Royal Hats
Post by: KatieAnn on December 13, 2005, 09:42:59 AM
Coincidence be d*mned, Grace!  Now that dear Cookie has departed, QEII can now finally give reign (pun intended!) and let rip - showing off her legendary sense of humour (well, she did let Camilla into the family) and perking up her wardrobe to boot.  Some of those outfits she wore that Hardy Ames did for her were ghastly - and made her look squat, dumpy and a right frump.  When we're 'competing' with European Royals (Margarethe, Sylvia etc) we have to pull our socks up and look the part.  Ok, no-one's expecting Anne to wear a micro mini and do a Britney Spears impersonation (we'll leave that to Harry's girlfriend), but I'm glad that QEII has left the Von Trapp Couture look behind and seems to be having a good time with her clothes.

I saw an old photo of Cookie recently smiling broadly - green hat, white face, yellow teeth, red lips - not a good look at any age!

Hey, can i just add that very few people of the Queen Mums generation had good teeth, they didnt have the dental hygiene that we have today. Also as people get older they do tend to be less aware of their appearence (how many old ladies do you see with wiskers etc?). It is very common for teeth to be that shade after so many years. At least they were her own. Now I am all for a laugh but IMO making disparaging comments about her teeth is going just a bit too far!

Thank you  :)

Additionally, there are various medical conditions that make certain treatments impossible (read: lethal) or highly risky.  In some instances, maintenance is the only possible course of action.

That's a fair comment.  Her teeth were horrible, but then they did last over a century!  :D

I still love the nickname that Kimberley's son thought up - 'Old Yeller'......killing!  :D

No excuse for the hats though!  That montage that palimpsest has thoughtfully put together for us illustrates quite clearly that exotic plumage is not always lovely....

Katieann, I think that the Queen has always had her own version of the three-strand pearl necklace; these ubiquitous pearls seem to have been like jewellery uniform for Windsor women in the last century.  I am sure that they are lovely pearls and quite valuable, but must confess that I prefer the superb pearls that the Dss of Windsor wore - the single strand of large lustrous peals that were allegedly David's inheritance from May.......

Oh Martyn, you've chosen my favourite piece of Wallis's jewellery!!  I adore those pearls - I have a fake strand that I wear a lot and they really do get nice comments.  Naturally I'd prefer the real things, but they are way out of my reach.  Although not a fan of David and Wallis, I did love the way she wore her jewellery.  Not afraid to wear big bold pieces during the day; and commissioning new exotic bits at the fancy took.  I'm also very fond of Wallis's "Strawberry" necklace too!

Probably!  When it came to jewellery, Wallis's taste was exquisite.  My taste too is exquisite, but unfortunately I don't have an indulgent PoW to fund my pearl and diamond habit (or Jimmy Choo either!) ...  Incidentally, as this subject is "Royal Hats" - was Wallis much of a hat wearer?  I loved the neat little one she wore for her wedding, but any others escape me.  Does anyone have photos?

Wallis's wedding hat was a beauty and the dress was gorgeous too (but you'd have to be extremely skinny to wear such a skimming dress); and I like the trilby she wore in the photo with David.  Even the little pixie hat's nice.  I don't think she'd really have suited the 'confectionery' kind of hats that Queen Elizabeth wore - too ornate and fussy.  With such angular features and, well, boyish figure, Wallis was much better sticking to the close-fitting neat hats she chose.  I know it's going against most of the correspondents here, but I like Wallis's choice of hats almost as much as I liked her jewellery.

I can't decide--would the hat distract one from the dress or would the dress actually overpower that hat? That dress would be bad enough at a club or something but based on the way Edward's dressed it's for a somewhat fancy event.  :P

No, that's Zara. Sophie, for all her fashion faux-pas, wouldn't wear something so.....indiscreet.  :P I can see where the hat would confuse you, though.  ;)

Also, I don't think it is Edward pictured with Zara. It is jockey (and ex bf) Richard Johnson ;)

You're right--at least about it not being Edward, I don't know anything about the other guy.  :-[  I was blinded by the ugly dress and hat.

Of all the current British Royal Ladies I think Camilla has the very worst taste. Most of her hats are crazily oversized and do nothing to add to her overall effect.

Camilla's hats have been discussed at some lenght within the Group.  Personally I feel that they are hugely variable in terms of style.

I tend to agree with you dmitri, that the oversized hats are the least successful and tend to create the effect that they are wearing her, as opposed to she wearing them!

Still hats must stil be somewhat of a novelty in her working wardrobe, so perhaps it will take some time for her to get a good sense of what suits and is appropriate for her age, status and the function for which any particular hat is needed...........?

The above picture of Zara looks like she forgot to order a dress and pulled a sheet off the bed and just wrapped it where it would cover the least amount of skin.

I don't think I have ever seen anything so ugly, ugly, ugly, even on royalty!

I am surprised that neither of the York girls have asked to borrow Zara's "ahem"....dress and hat. I do like the shoes though!

Everyone seems to like the shoes, but the rest of the ensemble....

Zara's notions of style really are quite curious.  That ensemble just doesn't work and the hat is hideous.  She often manages to make herself look indescribably cheap with her fashion choices, quite needlessly really as she has the potential to look great (great figure, nice face and hair).

Still it's hardly as if she has grown up in the palace of haute couture, is it?  I imagine that nowadays she gets a frisson of fear every time she puts on something brand new, as that must have been a rarity of life when she was growing up at at Gatcombe Park with her endlessly recycling mother!!!

On the subject of royalty and hats, someone should really take Prince William aside and tell him to stop wearing baseball caps. He looks totally lacking in intelligence when wearing them, and in any case (she says sniffily), the baseball cap is hardly suitable headdress for a commissioned officer.

In my opinion, the baseball cap belongs only on the heads of baseball players and not in restaurants or malls or any other place were American men wear them.

I even had a person in a class I took wearing a baseball cap all day in the classroom.  I find it annoying and ill mannered.

Agree entirely. The baseball cap has a function in keeping the sun out of the wearer's eyes, and should therefore be limited to wearing outside in strong sunlight.

I'm not sure, i think that Camilla normally looks really nice, especially for her age and.......well...not exactly having beauty  on her side.....i think she looked lovely when she got married (the second time ;) ), and at the royal wedding in april. complete improvement imo from the 70's things she went for, don't know who's dressing her now but i think well done them! I think her hat at the royal wedding was really lovely...unlike zara philip's which i thought looked a bit like a tv satellite..........and as for that flower split thing...oh dear......

I think Autumn Philips wore the most beautiful hat to..i think it was zara philip's wedding, the straw hat with the ribbon? feel free to correct me!

I agree.  Camilla was unfortunate in that she had Diana, Princess of Wales as her biggest comparison competition.  For her age, I think Camilla looks very good.

Of course, she does not have the dewy "young thing" look that Diana had or the later years Diana with the determined sexy whole woman thing going on.

Camilla has an odd taste in hats that make her look like she is wearing the Statue of Liberty's crown of light rays, (or the corn queen's sacrificial crown) but her dresses are age appropriate and she doesn't try to compete with the younger women of the family.

Camilla isn't glamorous, but she has a very pleasant face and dresses suitably for what she does.

I have to admit that I have never noticed her hats!

Oh now! I LOVE Camilla's hats! They are fun and reflect her playfully fun personality. God bless her in her fun hats! For those of you who agree, here is a link to a very fun site and has a section just for the Duchess: Mad Hattery! http://madhattery.royalroundup.com/category/great-britain/hrh-the-duchess-of-cornwall/

And, I must say, the fascinator she wore for her marriage blessing was absolutely stunning. She didn't require a tiara on that day...her fascinator took care of that.

Speaking of hats - I just read reports that in their efforts to improve the declining dress code in the royal enclosure at Ascot, this year fascinators will no longer be allowed - hats only.
