Is it already known when the press can take the first pictures of the little prince?
And when will his names be made public?
Title: Re: Children of Crownprince Frederick and Crownprincess Mary
Post by: Lucien on October 16, 2005, 05:42:55 AM
I suppose the press will be able to take some pics as Mary and her son leave the hospital. As for the names, they will be announced at the baptism,at least, that's how it was done in the past in Danmark.Contrary to what we do here Tatia, there is no registration needed within a few days after the birth. But they will have to registrere the baby in the parish of the Lutheran church.Personally I had wished for a scene similar to Alexander as he showed his daughters shortly after birth and presented them to the press, beaming allover.

Although Alexander or Erik would also be nice....

and has not always been known to go by the beaten track,I think he and Mary will surprise us:

Carl-Alexander,Henrik,Christian,André

Valdemar Frederik Henrik John,

Oh, okay. Someone had mentioned it 'was going to be' but I guess they meant that it would be the best name or something.

Someone did point out that it would fit tradition

Christian IX--Frederick VIII--Christian X--Frederick IX--??

(Actually since the 1500s, every Danish king has been named Christian or Frederik. Margarethe broke with tradition because she wanted a) to honor her father and b) to 'even' it up. So Crown Prince Frederik will become Frederik X and his son (if Christian is chosen and they follow precedent) will become Christian XI.)

Here's some of what was gleaned from the press conference that Frederick held:

"We had time to pack a little bit, and drive calmly from Fredensborg."

"It was a good birth. Mother and child were part of it the entire time, and it was a good birth."

Mary had an epidural as Alexandra had.

It took 10 hours from start to end

Frederick apparently cut the umbilical cord himself

"Mary is well, and was very brave. She has started, little by little, breast-feeding him."

"We'll take the time it takes to leave the hospital."

He made a cute hand gesture demonstrating how big the baby was. Awww.  :) It was a gesture repeated later by Prince Henrik

grandduchessella,I'm sorry but that's just MSNBC's wild guess.NO name has been announced yet. That,if they keep with tradition, will not happen until the baptism.Guess they had to fill up their program, and dropped that, but it's not true nor official.

I think Christian's a definite favourite.

But I'd like something different - Carl, Andre, Paul, George, Erik, Alexander, Nicholas, Philip, Steven, James ... Then again, they may salute Australia with - Wayne, Shane, Jason or Bruce making an appearance!

Whatever they call him though, I wish him a happy life.

Why may they salute Australia? Princess Mary is no longer Australian!
The Danish Folketing (parliament) passed a special law giving Mary Donaldson, who was a citizen of Australia and the United Kingdom, Danish citizenship upon her wedding, a standard procedure for new foreign members of the royal family.

Although, "Hans Christian Andersen Mel Gibson" would be perfect.

Try telling that to the Australians!  She'll still be one of theirs, despite her Danish citizenship - and Prince Jason Frederik Wayne Christian Bruce sounds good, so no doubt the Aussies will claim him too - and some enterprising person will send him a cricket bat, a book of Aussie Rules Football and a surf board as a christening present!!

Hmm . . . wikipedia says:

Prince Christian of Denmark will be, according to near-unanimous media reports and popular speculation, the name of the baby boy born on 15 October 2005 to Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark and his wife, the Australian-born Crown Princess Mary. As their firstborn child, the baby is second-in-line to the Danish throne, and will become the heir apparent when his father ascends the throne as king. The name of the child, though not yet officially announced, is widely expected to be Christian; since the 16th century Danish kings have traditionally been named "Frederik" or "Christian" by turns.

Nothing is definite yet . . .

I think, just to go along with the theme of the entire forum, they might name him after a distant relation.

E.g. Nicholai or Alexei or Alexander lol

how about HRH Prince Alexei Christian Frederik Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg?

That is typical. :) I missed the day he was born, as I left the country one day before, for my 2 week away from everything vacation, and now his christening is going to be right in the middle of my next vacation..
Regarding his name i think it will include Christian, Henrik and John as my safest bet. And then maybe a surprise name, or a name that comes from Greenland or the Foroya Islands.
But bad luck for me!

(10.00AM till 13.00PM),to cover the arrival of the guests and for background info.

Apparently the little Prince will have 8 godparents, besides Crown Princess Victoria and the Norwegian Crown Prince the Duke and Duchess of Brabant(Filip and Mathilde) will be in attendance as well.

Wow! I've been so deep in studies I didn't know a new Danish royal was expected.  What a pleasant surprise!

Although I do like the choice of names (it is nice to see those ancient names put to present-day use), I personally would have preferred something a little more Scandanavian.

Isabella is an Anglicized version of the Spanish "Isabel", which is of course the equivalent of "Elizabeth."

May God Bless the little Princess Isabella with a long and healthy life!

Yeah, me too. But Isabella is pretty. It just sounds more Spanish than Scandanavian. Is there any particular way Isabella and Henrietta is pronounced in Danish? Iknow the last two are Ing-ree Marg-aret-tah (not Marg-a-reeth).

It's not exactly a new name. Christian II was married to Princess Isabella von Habsburg back in 1515. (She was barely 14, and died very young, only 25 years old) Allthough she became known as Elisabeth in Denmark, but there has'nt been any Isabella in the danish royal family since, before now ;).

Title: Re: Children of Crownprince Frederick and Crownprincess Mary
Post by: synnadene on March 21, 2009, 03:07:44 AM

Because it is a tradition. Queen Margarethe II. made an except with her son the current CP Frederik, named after her father Frederik IX., but if Margarethe would be male, she would be possibly a "Christian".
Title: Re: Children of Crownprince Frederick and Crownprincess Mary
Post by: synnadene on March 21, 2009, 03:11:22 AM

I found it about the naming of little Prince Christian:

/The name / "Christian" is after his great-great-grandfather, King Christian X of Denmark, continuing the Danish royal tradition of the heir apparent being named either Christian or Frederik.
Title: Re: Children of Crownprince Frederick and Crownprincess Mary
Post by: synnadene on March 21, 2009, 03:14:10 AM

Because it is a tradition. Queen Margarethe II. made an except with her son the current CP Frederik, named after her father Frederik IX., but if Margarethe would be male, she would be possibly a "Christian".

I mean that she named her son Frederik and not Christian.. (after the tradition: one Frederik, one Christian, one Frederik and so on..., not only Frederik or Christian)

But maybe it is more clear with a quote, not my english :-)

"...first-born sons of Danish monarchs have traditionally been alternately named Frederik and Christian; Queen Margrethe, while naturally interrupting this sequence, treated herself as a "Christian" for the purposes of alternation, coming between one Frederik (her father) and, presumably, another (her son). Prince Christian will likewise presumably be known as "King Christian XI of Denmark" (following his great-great-grandfather Christian X. in that name)."

Title: Re: Children of Crownprince Frederick and Crownprincess Mary

Yes, it has thru time become a tradition. The first King Christian was followed by a King Hans, who was followed by Christian II. His son and heir was alos named Hans, but Christian II went into exile, leaving the throne to his uncle, King Frederik I. He also had a son named Christian (III), and so the tradition was started.
Due to the King Hans in between the two first Christians, the Frederiks have always been one number behind, but with Margrethe's son being a Frederik, that will no longer be the case.
King Christian IV's son and heir was also named Christian, but he died one year before his father, leaving the throne to his younger brother, King Frederik III. Thus the line of Christian, Frederik, Christian was not broken.

Though I do wih Mary would dress little Isabella in nice clothes. She always looks so dull. Bright colours for a pretty little girl I think.

Yes, I have to admit I am curious as to their choice of clothing for young Isabella.  I mean, it IS their choice but when you look at the way those little Spanish girls, for example, are dressed it seems such a contrast to the grey and brown pinafore-type clothes they seem to favour for Isabella so much.

I've once seen her in a little pink cardigan, though it was over a grey pinafore.
I wonder if Mary thinks she's going to get dirty.
But in my book, a dirty child is a happy child, means they've being having fun.

Wouldn't it be interesting to peek into her wadrobe.

In any case, I've noticed the same dress sense with Christian, have you Grace?

Not quite as much, Lindelle, probably because he's a little boy so you tend not to notice their clothes as much as those of girls.  But both children are dressed very traditionally and plainly.  Perhaps their parents want to keep them as simple as possible while they're small without following current trends in kids' clothing?

Post by: Zanthia on January 08, 2011, 06:35:49 AM
Today, january 8 2011, Mary gave birth to twins. First a boy and then a girl. Both mother and children are well, and the father is very happy.  ;D

Twins have occured in the royal family before, but these two are the first in almost 500 years that are in line to the throne. The first twins (boys) was born in 1519 by queen Elisabeth (Isabella), wife of Christian II, but they both died after the christening. The second pair (girls) was born in 1626, daughters of Christian IV and his wife to his left hand, Kirsten Munk, and therefore not in line to the throne. Current twins are Camilla and Josephine (born in 1972), former comtesses of Rosenborg, daughters of Count Christian of Rosenborg, cousin to the Queen. Their father renounced his right to the throne and his title of prince, when he married and was made count of Rosenborg instead. His daughters both lost their titels of comtesses when they married.

Twins have occured in the royal family before, but these two are the first in almost 500 years that are in line to the throne. The first twins (boys) was born in 1519 by queen Elisabeth (Isabella), wife of Christian II

Since they already have named their daughter after Queen Isabella of Burgundy and her husband Christian II is one of the many Christians their son is named after, I think it would have been nice if Mary and Frederik named their newborn twins after their twins, as Maximilian and Filippa! (The Middleton family would probably be thrilled too!) Or Maxima and Filip! (And thrill Isabella of Burgundy's successors, the RFs of the Low Countries, instead!)

Christian IV's twin daughters were called Hed(e)vig and Christiane. Hedvig would of course be cool in this age of Harry Potter, but Christian is of course already taken. Perhaps a mix, since both of the two former royal twin pairs were same-sex: Thus Maximilian or Filip and Hedvig!

Maximilian and Filippa, very pretty names!
(Maybe Mary gets then an invitation to Kates wedding?)

Philippa, daughter of King Henry IV of England (grandson of Philippa of Hainaut), wife of Erik of Pomerania, King of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, is of course also one of the fascinating forgotten queens of Denmark.

Speaking of names and Erik of Pomerania, I've never understood why people like the name Eugenia, I much prefer the name of Erik of Pomerania's great grandmother Eufemia (from whom he inherited his claim to Norway and Sweden.) BTW in this year of Kate Middleton, it would also have been cool if Mary and Frede had named their twins Katrine and Erik, after Erik of Pomerania and his sister. (She was the mother of Erik's heir, Christopher of Bavaria.)

BTW Erik's original name, as Duke of Slavic Pomerania, was Bogislav! His grand aunt Queen Margrethe changed his name to that of the Swedish patron saint when she adopted him as her heir. (Her own biological son, Olav, was named after the Norwegian patron saint. The ideal Scandinavian monarch would be called Erik Knud Olav, married to a Birgitta!)

I prefer Sophie and Oscar.
But I think they give their daughter the name Margrethe (of course, after Marie gave her son the name Hendrik).

Ah, Bernadotte names. (Well, the twins were at least conceived in the Bernadotte bicentennial year!) Then I'd rather go totally Bernadotte with Carl-Oscar and Josefine!

Quote
But I think they give their daughter the name Margrethe (of course, after Marie gave her son the name Hendrik).
Good idea! Margrethe and Kristoffer, since the first Queen Margrethe had a brother (who died before succeeding) so called. Two good Greek royal Danish names!

Or, since Mary is of some offshot of the Clan Donald, what about Somerled (the legendary ancestor of the clan, King of the Isles and a Nordic Viking) as a middle name for the boy and Ragnhild as a middle name for the girl, in honour of Somerled's wife Ragnhild, daughter of the King of Man and of old aunt Ragnhild "the draconian" of Norway in Brazil! BTW one of Somerled's and Ragnhild's sons was Raghnall mac Somhairle / Ragnvald / Ronald, the father of the founder of Clan Donald - also an interesting name. (Although Raghnall mac Domhnail may make people think of quite another, less Danish character than Holger Danske!)

Speaking of Ragnhild, which was the name of Harald the Hairfair of Norway's mother, make me think of the name of his father, Halfdan, literally Half Dane, which of course would be a perfect name for many Danish princes!

No, not Alexander, so over-used among royalty. Number 14, Malthe or Malte, would be cool. It sounds rather patrician! I'd vote for Malte Filip Somerled Maximilian and Hedvig Eufemia Ragnhild Philippa!
Title: Re: Mary and Frederik's twins

Guess on whose feast day the twins were born: Saint Severinus of Noricum. The Danish form of his name is Søren, one of the most arch-Danish names ever: pære dansk! I'd love to see a Prince Søren! Unfortunately there are not many attractive female saints' names to choose from on the 8th of January. I'm not sure his twin sister would be happy to go through life named after Saint Gudula! (The people of Brussels might feel honoured, though!)

It would also be a patriotic act of the Crown Princely Couple to give their child a good Danish name with an ø in it, now that Århus succumbed to keyboard-challenged idiots and renamed itself Aarhus from the 1st of January.

Is it just my impression, or is the Danish Royal Family the only one who has no contact to the people? They seem to be cold and unharmonious.
Frederik grouses that the Danes bullied his dad. But on daddys birthday complains about his bad childhood and fathers hardness.
Joachim says he is French - not very patrotic IMO.
Margrethe says she finds it very nice to have a French influence in the family and that they speak French again since Marie married in.
The Queen and her husband forbid their sons to marry Danes, because of the conflicts in this little country. That´s not an argument for me, in the time of computer and airplanes.
So my conclusion: they are not patriotic and will not choose names like Malte Filip Somerled Maximilian and Hedvig Eufemia Ragnhild Philippa (which are after seeing hundreds of the same suggestions a nice and good alternative!).
I hope I don´t offend someone!

Is it just my impression, or is the Danish Royal Family the only one who has no contact to the people? They seem to be cold and unharmonious.

All Danes, including the RF, do not necessarily fit into the jolly, easy-going, tolerant stereotype. Like Prince Charles remarked, just because you put on the façade of riding a bike instead of a horse doesn't mean you're ipso facto more approchable.

Quote
Frederik grouses that the Danes bullied his dad. But on daddys birthday complains about his bad childhood and fathers hardness.
Lol, you make it sound like the Danish Dogme 95 movie "The Celebration". Perhaps it is closer to the truth about the Danish RF than the fairytale!? But which family isn't to some degree dysfunctional? And although it is rather bad taste to complain about a bad childhood at your father's big birthday party (unless it was unforgiveable bad and you were molested, like in "The Celebration"), Frederik does to some extent fullfill a royal role this way: A monarchy's subjects want to see themselves reflected in their royal family, both the happy traits and the negative traits.

Quote
Joachim says he is French - not very patrotic IMO.
A bit odd, I agree. But for those of you who come from larger countries, it may be difficult to understand just how small Denmark is, with its 5,5 million inhabitants. Queen Margrethe has repeteadly warned against the typical Danish danger of being self-content, of ignoring the world outside Denmark. Best warning example: 1864! As a country dependent on export in a globalized world, it's vital that Denmark remains open to the world. Unlike Norway, whose RF it's natural compare the Danish one with, Denmark does not have an unlimited hoard of oil money that can lull people into fairytale dreams. (Best example: Princess Märtha Louise!)

BTW in interviews Queen Margrethe always discusses the world from a very Danish perspective, with very Danish sentiments. Perhaps it's façade and I don't know about the rest of her family, but my impression is that she relates very well to her subjects.

Quote
The Queen and her husband forbid their sons to marry Danes, because of the conflicts in this little country. That´s not an argument for me, in the time of computer and airplanes.
I agree that a scandal from the past can travel the world in no time today. But still I think a foreign spouse can lead to less jealousy in the original Land of Jante (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jante_Law).

Quote
So my conclusion: they are not patriotic and will not choose names like Malte Filip Somerled Maximilian and Hedvig Eufemia Ragnhild Philippa (which are after seeing hundreds of the same suggestions a nice and good alternative!).
I am glad you like my suggestions!

Now I've taken a look at the younger generations' full names and they are not that bad. I notice several of them feature Valdemar.

The only certain thing is that the boy won't be Christian, as the parents already have a Christian. With a break for Queen Margarete, Danish kings have been Christian or Frederik for some 500 years. How about Henrik after his grandfather, or something else traditional like Carl? The Crown princess's father is called John, so they could put that into Danish - is it Johan?

Post by: Lucien on April 14, 2011, 08:57:05 AM
The twins have been named Prince Vincent Frederik Minick Alexander and Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda . :)

Both children have Greenlandic middle names,Greenland still being part of the Kingdom of Denmark,
and loved by both the Crown Prince as well as the Crown Princess.Great choice.! :)

Bless them!

Sounds pretty good.

Note that young Vincent has Frederik as his second name just in case big brother Christian fails to produce issue.

Ah, tradition.

I guess Mathilda was given for Queen Caroline Mathilda of Denmark, former Princess of Great Britain. Unhappy little person... :(

No,not her.It is after Waltzing Mathilda, world famous in Australia and far beyond as it is their unofficial national anthem.
It's that Mathilda,everybody knows that song! ;D
Title: Royal Twins named what do you think?
Post by: rosieposie on April 15, 2011, 01:53:24 AM
The names have finally been announced.

Prince  Vincent Frederik Minik Alexander  and Princess Josephine Sophia Ivalo Mathilda.

I honestly don't like the name Vincent.  Makes me think of Vinnie from the movie Twins (the one with Danny Devito and Arnie)  where Vinnie is named Vincent because the sciencetists predicted the character would turn out to be a loser in life.

Poor kid.

Josephine is a nice name and I'm assuming named after Mary's friend who is also Godmother to Josephine.

Poor kid.

I don't think you can call him a "poor kid" just because of the name. There are names which are even worse. In my opinion Vincent is very fitting for a prince and it sounds more harmonic in my ears as Knud  :)

Indeed! What nonsense to call a kid a "poor kid" because of its name?!!Too childish to pay attention too on this forum,
maybe the CoM at other forums give waste of space to this sort of thing...we don't do that here. :-X
Anyway,I love the names.

I've never previously heard of a prince called Vincent, but it is a decent traditional sort of name. Is it used much in the Scandinavian world, and is it actually vincent there or is that the anglicised version?

I do agree that silly names are a burden, but Vincent does not come into this category.

Here is the family tree of the Laborde de Monpezat.

I couldn't find any Vincent so the name is maybe given just to "touch" the french side.

The official photo after the christening.
Mary holding the prince and Frederik the princess. Mary is wearing the same headband as she did to the christening of her two eldest children, and also the beautiful brooch of a sapphire, pearls and diamonds the Queen gave her when Christian was born. Between their parents, the two cuties Isabella and Christian who, in my opinion, stole the entire picture at the christening. Especially Isabella, she's a real little imp and so adorable. ;D

Hi,

Beautiful picture!

Gorgeous children - and I like the names, Vincent & Josephine;  they are different and royalty needs to adopt new names, in my opinion...

The twins are absolutely adorable, Prince Vincent's similarity to Prince Christian is really striking and Princess Josephine has inherited Queen Margrethe's big baby cheeks :)
