I don`t know if this topic has been discusst before
and if i put it in the rigth place.
But this is the queistion.
Who do you all see as the greatst empress that russia has had.
I Woud say that Empress Elisabeth Alexeevna the wife of Aleksander 1 is the greatst empress
but what do`s the rest of you think.
my english is not that good so i hope you all understand
-
IMHO, it was Catherine.
Tatiana
-
maybe not the greatest, but i have quite a fascination for empress elizabeth, the daughter of peter the great. :)
-
Catherine the Great
and for consort
Maria Feodorevna (Minny)
-
Catherine the Great :)
-
Ekaterina II The Great
and for a consort-- Maria Feodorovna "Minnie" and Aleksandra Feodorovna(the older one)
-
I think greatest empress was Catherine the great. A close second would be Elizabeth as she did a lot to promote arts and built many beautifull palaces.
-
1. Catherine the Great
2. Elizabeth
Seems to be the concensus here....
-
One good thing about the Empress Elizabeth. She abolished the death penalty in Russia. It was later reintroduced - by Peter or Catherine - but it seems to me to be a very enlightened gesture.

She also threw all Germans out of the government, which pleased enemies of Anna!

peter must have hated it though :P

If you mean Peter III, he brought them back before her (admittedly large) corpse was cold.
-
not the smartest move :P
-
Catherine the Great. No doubt in my opinion. She was a shrewd, smart, witty, and capable woman. One of the greatest female monarchs of all time.
-
Well, from all she did in her reign, it's got to be Catherine the Great as a reighing alone Empress. As for a consort, perhaps Marie Feodorovna, wife of Alexander III, and mother of Nicholas II?
-
Catherine II "The Great."
Elizabeth for second place.
I agree with Mandie that Maria Fedorovna was a great consort.[smiley=smiley.gif]
I don't know very much at all about the consorts between Catherine the Great and Maria Alexandrovna.
-
I think that Catherine the great was a better empress of her time and she did help Russia with the welfare for the people with health and homeless problems.
-
Catherine the Great!!!!
-
I agree. Catherine the Great!
-
Her female predecessor Elizabeth was pretty great too if you examine the fact that she survived and also her building record. For a woman being a ruler is always tough.
-
I would have to agree with the majority on Catherine The Great being the foremost of the reigning empresses.
As to best consort, I wonder if anyone can make an unbiased opinion. Much more is known about Marie "Minnie" Feodorovna than the other consorts, not to mention her connection to a family with an iconic status, that it tips the scales unfavorably in her favor. But I pose a question as to why she might not be the best consort. Nicholas II was obviously an ineffective tsar; as his mother, does she not bear some of the blame (for his upbringing)?

??? :o
I think the translation of the phrase in brackets in the above quote would be: "Woe betide you if any of you "Pöttelköppen" disagrees with this" - "Pöttelköppen" probably being a kind of term of abuse in local Darmstadt dialect.
Why this threat and name-calling?
-
Thank you for your proper translation, Helen.
Why? Well....Thomas has written it. There was never something good coming fr. Thomas's hand I guess.

I would like to add another vote for Catherine the Great, who seems to be the favourite. She was the only Russian Monarch to have a specific style of beer made just for her! (believe it or not)
-
Again, a vote cast for Catherine the Great. Not only did she seize the throne from her rather ineffective and offensive husband, she added huge amounts of territory to Russia, considered some pretty amazing reforms for her time, was incredibly well-read for a woman, basically started the Hermitage art collection (yes, Peter I bought the first art, but Catherine was the first to be systematic about it), and was, for the most part, religiously tolerant. There is the whole area of what she did NOT manage to accomplish (freeing the serfs, turning Russia into a constitutional monarchy, etc.) but her record is, for this period, pretty remarkable.
-
Yep I agree Catherine the Great followed by Elizabeth.
Who on earth would think that A.F. was the best Empress? Or am I missing something?

-
I think Marie Feodorovna the elder (wife of Paul) is a good consort!
-
Catherine the Great!!!! Go Cathy Go!!! LOL
-
I think maybe Ekatarenira Velikaja(Chatereina the Great) or Elisabeth Petrovna.Of empress consourt maybe Maria Alexandrovna. She do Red cross in Russia, and do school reform.
-
Well, all of them were great in their own way, Imho.
From Elizabeth Petrovna till the last Alexandra.
It's hard to say that Catherine the First or Anna Ioannovna were the Empresses from the capital E, but they had something good.
And the best were in the 19th century.
-
Catherine the great for me!
-
IN referring to empress are we specially talkin about russia,if so it would be the german empress Catherine, but wht about the only woman to rule the holy roman empire Maria therese, she had to deal with frederick till the day she died an did not back down!!!
-
Catherine the great.
-
Catherine the great.
I agree with you
-
Most Definately Catherine the Great
Anna
and Maria Feodorovna, mother of Nicholas II.
-
I'll go with Catherine the Great, although I think Minnie was quite good too.
-
I have to say that I like Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna (Charlotte von Preußen) wife of Nicholas I too, she was so sweet and intelligent, maybe not the greatest but indeed a good Empress.
-
Marie was a nice person, but I don't think that she was one of the best Tsarinas
