A few weeks ago there was a very interesting and great programm on Belgian TV about Queen Paola called;" Paola, the voice of the Queen".The reason for this title was that Belgians know their King and his voice and know their Queen, but her voice is seldom heard. The Queen herself was/is aware of that as well and wished to do something about that. She wasn't known for speaking dutch(flemish)that well, but, the program proved the opposite,HM tends to talk slowly, either in dutch, french or Italian, but she's great. An interview was not Queen Paola's idea of showing herself, she favored talks with old-time friends from Italy,The Netherlands and Belgium and let them talk and ask her questions. The result was an unique program with in depth views of the Queens life, and humour wasn't forgotten,it is a very witty lady.HM was filmed and had talks while in Venice for the Biënnale, she has a passion for contemporary art.HM and her friends talked about her childhood, soon after she was born, her then 14 year old sister died,of her brothers during WWII,one went north to join the partizans, another heading south to join the Allied Forces and was killed in action,HM;"And he was so beautifull!!Belissima, belissima, stupendo stupendo,(incredible),how the whole family had to seek shelter in a convent to escape Mussolini's gang, her marriage and how love conquered every obstacle within it.

I've translated the interview and will post it later this week.

With the Queen and the King still abroad to recover/holidays a burglar intruded the grounds of Chateau Belvedère,the private residence of TM The King and Queen of the Belgians. He managed to burglar the house of a member of the Palace staff on the grounds, and robbed some personal documents.

Four hours later the man was arrested near the dutch city of Breda for speeding with a stolen car.It turned out to be the same guy who was previously arrested and convicted last may after intruding the residence of Crown Prince Filip and Crown Princess Mathilde.(Convicted?just for a few days/weeks,can't recall now, anyway,it wasn't anything worth mentioning, rediculous).

The police stated that since TM are abroad there was a " lesser security alert"....

Note:Can't call them names can I?Just think of anything in that spectrum....the morons.

A spokesman of the Royal Palce stated today;"The Palace has no specific feelings in regard to this fake story".

Why and What?Last night the Belgian french (public)tv station RTBF interrupted their regular program with a - bogus - story that the dutch/flemish part of the country had declared it's independence. It had all of Belgium fooled and many more in this utterly tasteless act, even stating that HM The King had fled the country by military aircraft.

The Wallone and Flemish parts of the country don't sit well, has been so for decades, but this bogus scared the bejesus out of most on both parts of the language "barrier".Today RTBF issued a statement saying the bogus was/is meant to start a discussion on the future of the country. But that discussion is an ongoing saga/soap for at least 4 or 5 decades or more,it resulted already in Belgium becoming a Federal State a few decades ago under King Baudouin's Reign.

By doctors orders King Albert has to tone down his work load.HM didn't sufficiently recuperate from his total hip operation a few months ago.Besides that his work load has increased immens with the ongoing problems forming a government since the elections months ago,in which HM is highly involved due to his Constitutional prerogatives.Trouble is the Flemish wish/want more independance.(.spoiled rotten brats) and the Wallone part doesn't wish any change. In the press Belgium has recently been referred to as "Absurdistan".HM meanwhile does/has done anything he can to reconcile and appointed a Royal scout to investigate the possibilities, but most unfortunately, that didn't work out either.

HM will perform the most nessecary of his duties, including receiving politicians, and the State Visit to Ireland in two weeks time will go ahead as planned as well. After that, and the forming of the new government,HM is ordered to tone done and take a long overdue rest for a considerable period of time.HM is also known with a heart condition,he had several bypasses some years ago.

The Palace anounced:

"Sur recommandation médicale le Roi doit réduire son programmes d'activités.Il se concentrera sur les audiences politiques, principalement celles liées à la formation du gouvernement,et sur certain activités de relation extérieur comme la visite d'Etat en Irlande et la remise du Lettres de créance.Dès la formation du Gouvernement,le Roi devra impérativement parfaire sa convalescence  de repos et de revalidation."

Interesting qeustion Norbert.Albert II was a Prince of Liege from his birth.HM could have done so yes,but maybe choose not to as the persons in question didn't warm to the idea and the titles are bestowed upon birth.I suppose the titles will be waiting untill Crown Prince Filip becomes King and bestowes the titles to his sons.

Btw,Prince Filip has his birthday today, and his dear spouse Princess Mathilde is due any moment,if the baby so decides.

Apart from the title 'Duke of Brabant', other titles wouldn't be used anymore. Besides, Prince Alexander is not a dynast and wouldn't receive a courtesy title.

In 2001 HM decided to cease to bestow any of the titles,Count of Flanders,Count of Hainaut and Prince de Liège.

The Rethie title, besides that it is a village,is something that can better be answerred by Eric I'm sure as he is from Belgium.
Eric, could you please explain why Leopold III choose that title?

Well, the title 'de Réthy', 'van Retie' was a title members of the royal Family used incognito. The most known case comes to mind when Prince Leopold (future King Leopold III) visited Sweden before his engagement to Princess Astrid of Sweden, he was introduced to friends of Prince Carl & Princess Ingeborg of Sweden (his future parents-in-law) as 'Monsieur Philippe de Réthy', while his mother Queen Elisabeth was 'Madame de Réthy'.

Thanks, Lucien, and sorry for the late reply.
King Leopold III took the oath in parliament on 23 February 1934, 6 days after the death of his father. Traditionally this happens before the 14th day of death of the previous sovereign.
The inauguration oath of King Leopold I was a bit different speaking of location: not in parliamant, but it was in open air on a tribune in front of the church Saint Jacob On Coudenberg, next to the Royal Palace.

Lucien, you're making me think of a lot of memories,  :), I have lived the National Day of Belgium many times since my mother was born in Belgium (from Italian parents, and they live still there).
I spent many summers there in Belgium, and often I was there during the National Day.

HM King Albert II celebrates his 76th birthday today!

The King and Queen Paola are to visit the Congo on the 50th anniversary of their independence later this month,
but it has become highly doubtfull, again,or the visit will take place as the Congolese Chair of the Human Rightswatch

The Belgian Foreign Office has demanded an investigation and the Palace doubts if a visit to the former colony is appropiate at present.

Poor man,but the only one with real grey cells for brains in the whole of Belgium.Admirable human being.

The absolutely idiotic stance in the formation of a government is about petty little attitudes by totally
incompetent little no-goods.I wish Albert could impose a One Government for Belgium instead of
those redicilous three governments fior the Flemish,Wallone and Brussels in a way out of line federal system
for such a darn tiny place as Belgium.Too rediculous for words, the spoiled rotten totally irresponsible brats.
As they're the neighbours we here get a more then pretty good idea of what goes on there.Really, and then
to think they once were part of our Kingdom....imagine...They're a lot of fun and have great food, but other
then that, they're damn good at making trouble over nothing and are all about pretending they're the center
of Europe in any which way....Yeah....my foot...

But,alas, poor Albert has to deal with that lot.

Vive le Roi!!

TM visited a secundary school in the city of Aalst this morning and observed a minute silence. The visit was cut short due to the accident
that happened last night in Sierre,Switserland and the Monarch and Queen went to the military airbase Melsbroek,Brussels
to comfort parents of the children involved in last nights tragedy.A Belgian bus with school children returning from a skiing
holiday crashed in a tunnel killing 28 people,22 of them children aged about 12.

All parents have been flown over to Switserland by government aircrafts this afternoon.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-17362643

From the 28 people who lost their lives,22 were children,15 of which were Belgian and 7 Dutch. All from Lommel,a town
that is a Dutch enclave just over the border near Eindhoven.6 Adults also lost their lives, they accompanied the children,
four were from Lommel and two from Heverlee.

The bus was the last of three busses with children, the other two had already passed the tunnel. That is one of the main
reasons it took so long for Swiss authorities to find out who was who and what happened to whom before they could call
for any parents really.24 Children are wounded, ranging from sheer shock to coma for three of them, their parents are with them
now. Many of the wounded and their parents,as well as the victims and their loved ones, will be flown home to Belgium today
by the Belgian Airforce.

Belgian PM Elio di Rupo, who is in Switserland talking to authorities and visiting victims and their loved ones, called for a day of
National mourning but it is not yet sure when this will take place. All over Belgium are books of condolences and churches were
full last night for vigils. One in the St.Peter in Leuven/Louvain was lead by the Archbishop Mgr.Leonárd while 1000 gathered there.
The Papal Nuntius to Belgium read a message from HH the Pontiff.

HM Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands has send a telegram of condolences to TM King Albert and Queen Paola as well as to the
berieved, the wounded and their loved ones.If anyone, then it is she who knows all to well what these poor poor people have to
go through.

I've heard that both King Albert II & Queen Paola had lovers and wanted to divorce...
Is that true?

Wikipedia says:

"By the late 1960s, things were going wrong for Albert and Paola. Both were allegedly having affairs, and lived apart for a long while. There were even rumors of divorce plans. But by the early 1980s, things had improved well for Albert and Paola. It is said the Prince’s brother, King Baudouin, acted a mediator between the two. Even their daughter, Princess Astrid’s devout Roman Catholic faith might have played a role. In the end, Albert and Paola chose to stay together. For her 70th birthday interview, Paola, now Queen of the Belgians, said, “we’ve had our problems, but now we both say that we were meant for each other. We are very happy now.”"

from the royalforums

"However, soon after the marriage, the first cracks in the shiny surface appeared. Although the love between Albert and Paola was more than real for several years, they both suffered from the paparazzi, who had chased the glamorous Princess during the engagement, and who didn’t leave them alone during their honeymoon in Majorca. Princess Paola was often seen leaving stores through the back door, because the press would follow her everywhere. Paola was the Belgian style icon of the 1960s, but she herself would never admit to that. “I’m not a star” she would say in an interview, “I’m a woman like all other”. But between her and Queen Fabiola, she was definitely the more glamorous of the two.

Soon after the marriage, the couple was blessed with three children: Philippe (1960), Astrid (1962) and Laurent (1963). But the loneliness of the young princess weighed her down, and, to the utter annoyance of her sister-in-law Queen Fabiola, Princess Paola didn’t hide the fact that she sometimes considered her life as princess difficult and heavy. She was homesick and her leaving her beloved Italy was very difficult on her. Although the Princess enjoyed the glamorous part of her new life, she felt like the price she payed was sometimes too much. Especially her loneliness and the strict Belgian protocol were difficult to deal with. She became estranged her from her husband, who had his escape route with his motor bikes and his work. She didn’t find an ally in her sister-in-law either, who seemed to disapprove of almost everything the young Princess did. Later she would say that it was difficult to adapt to her new life. There was nobody to guide her, nobody to help her. “At that time, I really would have wanted Queen Astrid to be there”, she once said.

In the mid 1960′s, Prince Albert started leading most of the Belgian economic missions, and he traveled abroad a lot. Princess Paola at first accompanied her husband, so they both soon alienated their children. But after a while, Paola stopped accompanying her husband, reportedly because she was always so bored, and as a result they grew apart more and more. Their children suffered from the alienation between the parents, but Albert and Paola continued on their own course. While Paola spent a lot of time in Italy, Albert performed his duties, and both started having extra-marital relationships. While the couple did appear relatively happy in public – they posed as a happy family for their tenth wedding anniversary, at a time when Albert has already fathered a child with his mistress, Barones Sybille de Selys-Longchamps (which he never publicly admitted) – their love had withered and the divorce papers were ready to be signed.

But King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola strongly opposed a divorce, and so the couple remained together for many years, each living their own lives. By the time the King and Queen finally consented to a divorce, Albert and Paola had found each other again. How this miracle happened, nobody knows for sure. Was it Princess Astrid who brought her parents together again? Was it the Charismatic Movement? Or a couple’s therapy weekend? Fact is, that Albert and Paola really loved each other again by the time their daughter got married...ueen Paola gave the most candid insight in her relationship with her husband. “We had our difficulties”, she said, but “ora diciamo ch’eravamo fatto l’uno per l’altro” – now we say that we were made for each other. It is true that King Albert and Queen Paola have travelled a long way since they first met. Today, July 2, 2009, they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary, and everyone who sees them together knows that they are a much loved and loving couple. They have succeeded in overcoming their difficulties and they love each other all the more for it."

Queen Paola was indeed very open on this in a great documentary a few years ago called; "The Voice of the Queen" in which she sat chatting while having lunch with friends in Venice,Italy. They indeed have come a long way but are a closeknitted set since very long again.

It was a blessing for them, Belgium and the monarchy that they found together again. They are such a charming couple and became popular
after Albert became king so unexpected.

I remember an anecdote I have read - but I don't know whether it's true or only a newspaper hoax. It says that at an official appointment he introduced himself as the "husband of Queen Paola". to the cheering crowd.

Has anyone else heard the rumour that King Albert II is going to announce his abdication today in favour of his son Philippe, the Duke of Brabrant?

It seems to be true!! In a national televised address about an hour ago, King Albert II said he would step down on 21st. July, Belgium's national day, as it was time to "pass on the flame".
He will be succeeded by the Duke of Brabant, Crown Prince Philippe.

By the way, where is Lucien? He has been very silent recently.

Cheers,
GREENOWL

Yes, he confirmed he is abdicating, for the reason Greenowl said and I'm sure he said "That his health isn't allowing him to continue with duties."

And I was wondering where Lucien had gone too!

Thanks Jen-94...that is correct, he also mentioned his health. Of course he is not getting any younger and has been king for 20 years now since his brother's untimely and sudden death.

Perhaps Lucien is on holiday...hopefully he is not ill, but the silence is rather odd and worrying. I have just checked and it seems he has not been active since 1st May, thus two months ago.

Cheers,

Yes, he is in his late 70's now isn't he?

So I heard that (if my memory serves me rightly) that there is no big coronation ceremony for a new Belgian King/Queen like the one for the Dutch royals. How does a typical new Monarch ceremony happen in Belgium?  Is it a 'sworn in' ceremony?

Hopefully so! Hoping he'll be back on here soon.

Yes indeed, he is almost 80 years old.

I actually don't know much about the coronation ceremony (if any) in Belgium, but no doubt we will find out in due course.

I've just read, it's only an oath in parliament, Belgium has no crown, just as an emblem.

No problem. It definitely is! So it sounds like we might not see another gathering of the heirs like the Dutch ceremony.

The enthonement ceremony occurs before the assembed members of parliament.  It is rather simple with no great pomp or ceremony involved.  Foreign Heads of States and Royals are not generally present.

Interesting, because normally only legitimate children inherit titles. There have been centuries of illegitimate children that had no natural rights to titles throughout every realm. Although many were recognized and maybe given a lesser noble title.

Wow, I didn't even know any of this in the first place. The three inherit titles but are not in line to the succession, it seems, although if they were they would be after his older children and grandchildren and so it would have been pointless to put them in anyway, as it would have been unlikely they would even inherit.

I think this is one of the only instances a claim to royal paternity has been confirmed with DNA to be true. And who would have thought it would be an 18 year old schoolboy who would start this whole thing!

The King set an example for his cowardice father to follow.
A most admirable gesture by King Filip.
