I've noticed lately that there are a lot of threads where something is posted and while it's nice, it's not really a conversation and only gets one or two replies and then just dies and floats to the bottom until someone bumps it back up with a "oh, that's nice" or whatever. I hope the mods approve of this thread, because I thought that this could be the little thread of Romanov non sequitors. If you have an interesting fun fact, random Romanov thought, have found something interesting, or whatever, just post it here instead of making a new topic for it and clogging the board! ;)
-
That's a very good idea, IMO. And here's something I found interesting...isn't this Alix's friend, Lily Dehn(sp?)? I think Tatiana looks a lot like her. It would have been cool to have seen how much Tatiana looked like her as she grew old.

EW! your right... that is creepy!

I'm not sure who that is, but it does look strikingly like Tatiana. Where did you find that photo?
Here are some I'm sure are Lili, for comparison:

Opps, I guess that isn't Lilly, then. I found it at Beineke. It was the largest album, the one with 90 pages. I think it was near the end.
-
Whoever it is, she did look a lot like Tatiana! Are those albums labeled with dates or anything? If there was a general date we could read and see where letters and stuff mention visitors.
-
Great topic Ritka! Probably the best ever. ;D
I think of the Romanovs when I'm outside in the summer too Emily! Or whenever I'm outside in general! Outside is just a great place to think about them, I find! :)
-
I agree with Holly. This was a smart thing to do, Ritka. I agree with you and that people post threads that only end up being short and take up a lot of room in this Forum.
Great pictures, clockworkgirl! I believe that is Lili's child that the Empress is holding in her arms. Alexandra was a godmother to Lili's son and called him Titi, and "Titi" called Alexandra Aunt Baby.
And I think that that first picture would have been what Tatiana would have looked like at an older age.
-
I'm making this a sticky.
There are so many new threads that are not needed. Great idea Ritka!!
-
I can't believe I haven't noticed THIS before. In the movie, Elwood Blues gets into some trouble with the Russian Mafia....the film depicts them as Tsarist Loyalists, their headquarters is an abandoned embassy with crossed out Soviet flags and within are statues of the Tsars and at what appears to be an altar is a formal portrait of Nicky. :o
Ye gotta see it to understand, I am horrible at explaining things ::)
I have seen this flick too many times and cannot believe I missed it every time! Just thought it was a fun topic to point out. I know its a movie but is it for real? The fact that a branch/cell of the Russian Mafia is loyal to the dynasty? :-?
I just thought I would move this, before deleting the thread. :)
-
Yay it's sticky!!
TheAce1918: which movie is that?
-
Lol, I was trying to find this thread but didn't see it in the first 4 pages untill I looked at the very top... ::)
Anyways, me and my mom get this weekly paper type thing and it has facts and a crossword puzzle that we do. Well in the crossword, #1 down was "Former Russian Rulers" ^_^
And in then there's a 'Did You Know...' section and it says "What a present: Queen Victoria got a very unusual wedding gift when she married her cousin, Prince Albert, in 1840. It was a half-ton cheese that had a diameter of over nine feet."
;D
-

Yeah!
we used to have a hamoc... and when ever my family had other family over... it reminded me of them alot.
like this picture reminds me alot of my family!

-
God I want a hammock, but knowing me, I'll tumble out of it ;D ;D
Oh and Margarita...it was The Blues Brothers 2000...someone/thing deleted it. :-/
Sticky? :-?
-
.someone/thing deleted it. :-/
I'm a someone I assure you. Yeah, I did delete the thread so there won't be clutter, but moved the message here so it would not be deleted itself. I apologize that I forgot to put the title of the movie.
Sticky? :-?
It means it stays at the top of the having fun page.

A bit of a silly question, but I've been wondering if the Romanovs (not just NAOTMAA but the Romanovs before them too) had court musicians. I don't remember reading about it anywhere. Anyone know? Thanks!
-
I know there was a Balalaika orchestra on the Standart, but that's the extent of my knowledge on the subject of imperial musicians. Somewhere around here, there's a photo of Aleksei as a toddler on deck with the balalaika players.
-
Seek and ye shall find!

Thanks to clockworkgirl_21 for posting this on another thread. :)
-
Thanks so much, this really helps me! Thank you Sarushka! :)
-
I have a small question. Did TMAA ever visit France? All I know is Olga did, as a baby.
-
Yes, I remember seeing a photo of the family in Cherbourg in 1910 or something like that. I can find it.
-
Is this the one you're thinking of Marina?
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Abroad/th_familyfrance.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Abroad/familyfrance.jpg)
-
Exactly! Thank you.
-
GD Sasha-
Yes, they had GREAT court musicians, probably the best outside of Vienna. Not only the Guards milirtary bands, but the Bolshoi and Mariinsky were theirs. See King's Last Court...
-
Another question, anyone know which regiments Alix, Maria, and Anastasia had? Olga's and Tatiana's were on Livadia.org.
-
Alexandra: 5th Alexandriysky Hussars
Anastasia: 148th Caspian Infantry
Still looking for Maria's...
-
Found it! (Right after I posted, of course ::))
Maria: 9th Kazansky Dragoons
-
Thanks Sarushka - I didn't even know Anastasia and Maria had regiment!
-
Does Anastasia has a picture with her regiment uniform? I know I've seen a picture of Marie but I haven't found one of Anastasia's.
-
iv been searching for that picks aswell reashka but haven found it >:( ;D :D
-

I've never seen one of Anastasia, either, and I don't believe one exists. I think WWI prevented Anastasia from having the chance to perform her regimental duties. Here's a photo of her regimental badge:
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/th_ANregimentalbadge.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/ANregimentalbadge.jpg)
These are the only 3 photos I've seen of Maria in her uniform:
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/th_mashkauniform2.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/mashkauniform2.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/th_mashkauniform.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/mashkauniform.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/th_mashahorseback.jpg) (http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y285/sarahelizabethii/Romanov/Regimentals/mashahorseback.jpg)
Alix's Hussars uniform:

I've got a bunch of photos of Alix in uniform, but strangely, NOT in her Alekandriysky Hussars uniform. Looks more like Lancers to me:

Thanks, Sarushka. For your answer and the pictures. It's a shame one probably doesn't exist of Anastasia. :-\
-
To put it rather frankly, I didn't know those pictures existed. Thanks!

Isn't Tatiana the Lancer one? Uhlan Lancers, did I get the name correctly? I may be wrong, though. :-\

Those are terrific! I've seen bits and pieces of the coronation video, but never the whole thing strung together. And the inspection one is great -- you can see how enormous GD Nikolai Nikolaevich was compared to the tsar. Also, I think I spotted "Fat Orlov" in the beginning. The views of the family during the last minute or so are great!
Thanks!

Yes, you're right -- that's why I was surprised to see how similar Alix's uniform is to Tatiana's in those pictures. ;)
-
Here's a little question. I'm rereading Nicholas and Alexandra: A Lifelong Passion and have this to ask: What does Tatiana mean by a "chair?" She wrote...
1913
Tatiana to Alix-26 March-Tsarskoe Selo
My dearest darling Mama,
I just had a bath and before that a chair, so today I had two chairs. I hope you will sleep well my darling angel and that I will see you not in bed with a bad heart, but feeling well and in your sitting room.

Wow! Thank you. I wish I could save these onto my computer, especially the last one. It was great to see Alexandra interacting with Alexei and Olga, Anastasia, and I think it was Maria in the back.
-
I think that I can see Count Frederiks in the last video, and also "Nicolasha".
RealAnastasia.

After a long absence from AP, it struck my fancy the other day to search on deviantArt (my second home) for any type of Romanov-related works. Granted, I found quite a lot that are hardly realistic, such as this comical inking of Rasputin - http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/33919169/ (http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/33919169/) - and plenty that just happened to have the name in there, perhaps the artist's. However, I did find one standout piece, actually a redraw from a video game (Shadow Hearts Covenant) that features the Princess Anastasia - granted, much younger than she actually would have been in 1914-1915 - but I believe her clothing is actually fairly accurate when rendered by the hand of ~alucard-fan...

If only we had that kinda money sitting around! :)

Where was that $7000 I had just a minute ago?
Well, even if it's very expensive, at least we get to see pictures up close of the uniform like Tatiana wore for free ;D

Since the Songs thread is long gone, I'm posting this here. Has anyone ever seen White Christmas, with Rosemary Clooney? The song "Sisters" fits Olga and Tatiana to a T. ;D

It's a family tradition in my house. Watch it every year!
I think you might be right about that! Wow!

Just watched it on Monday with Grandma. 8)

This could probably be answered with one post, so I'm putting it here. Why didn't Maria have any jewels on her when the IF was murdered?
-
she didn't?
why not?
where did you hear this?
-
I could be wrong here, but I think it was because they only hid the jewels after N&A and Maria left. So she wasn't there. At least, that's what I've read in FOTR. Apparently there was a letter from Alexandra telling OTA to conceal the remaining jewels.
-

There's a whole thread on that question:

I've often wondered about that "chair" reference myself! My thought was that it referred to a girl's having her hair elaborately combed by some other female while seated on a chair. In other words, a nice hair-styling and combing "sitting." or session. I think I'm right , but it's definitely only a guess.
-
I have one question, and something else I just want to throw out there. Why didn't Tatiana have a 16th coming out party like Olga did? She turned 16 in 1913, which was before the war.
And something else, has anyone ever seen the Producers, the original or musical? I just love where Roger walks in the room with a dress on, and says he's supposed to be "the Grand Duchess Anastasia." I always laugh.
-
Good question....Well, I think that Tatiana didn't have a "coming out" ball like Olga's because of the hubub for the Tecentenary. Balls here, parties there, etc. Then when 1914 rolled around, well, we all know what happened then...
-
Then when 1914 rolled around, well, we all know what happened then...
Boston won the World Series. ;D
Just kidding, I know full well what else happened that dark year. :(
-
Whoo! Go Boston! ;D
Can anyone tell me if the IF's pet's collars were actually Faberge?
-

I've seen both movies! Haha, I don't remember if he said it on the first one but on the second movie he's saying he looks more like the Chrysler building!

My darling sweet dear Papa!!!
I want to see you so much. I have just finished my arithmetic lesson, I think I did quite well. We are going to the nurses' school. I am very glad. Today is is rainy and very damp. I am in Tatiana's room. Tatiana and Olga are here. When you see Boba, tell him I'm going to beat him again and that my hands are itching.
I'm trying very hard to breed worms, and Olga says I think, which isn't true. When you come I am going to bathe in your bath. I hope you haven't forgotten the story I told you during our walk.
I am sitting picking my nose with my left hand. Olga wanted to biff [smack] me one but I escaped her swinish hand. When you come I will meet you at the station. Be happy and healthy.
A big squeeze to your hand and face. Thinking of you. Love you always, everywhere.
Anastasia
Question: Who is Boba?
-
Another question (rather silly, I guess). Did the girls (at least OT) ever plucked their eyebrows? LOL, because on some pictures (close up) I noticed that their brows looked as if it was plucked?

There's been many threads about body hair. :D I think it was likely they did pluck or shave at least a little. Especially for formal photos. They wouldn't look exactly formal with thick eyebrows or hairy pits.

Eyebrows are one thing, but I certainly can't think of a single photo in which underarm hair would have half a chance of showing...

I found this site while looking pics of the romanovs. It's wierd IMHO. Your thoughts? Click on 'The DNA connection.' They seem to say that Stalin was the person that ordered their execution! Stalin wasn't until the 1940-50's, right?
P.S. Even if Alix was the daughter of this queen, she wouldn't be princess of wales. Only the wife of the prince of wales is the princess of wales. ;D Just sayin'! This site is full of factual errors! ::) Will they ever learn?
-
Yeah, that is weird.....
And Stalin was after Lenin died, 1930's and 40's, and they seem to say that because the Romanovs were killed, it gave Stalin power and caused him to be a murderer. Again, that site is weird!
-
Ya... Just like those people who claim Alexei escaped to Area 51... Now THAT is weird.
-
None of that stuff is true it is a fake those pictures are not of the same person. Those are other people trying to pretend to be members of the family. :)
-
I was wondering.. everyone calls the grand duchesses OTMA, and a lot of books, sites etc say that they signed their letters and stuff with it. But I actually never saw it anywhere! Someone knows more about it?
-
There are a couple of photos of letters, postcards, and telegrams with that signature on it. I believe that some of these photos were posted somewhere on here. If not, a good example is Louis Mountbatten's book Mountbatten: Eighty Years in Pictures
-
I just the other day ran across a poem composed to "OTMA" by Pyotr Petrovich in 1910. It's on page 90 of Nicholas II: The Imperial Family (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/books.html?sku=20). Unfortunately, I can't scan the image without breaking the binding of the book....
-
How do you write (well, type) OTMAA's full names in Russian? I've found Russian sites have good pictures if you care to blindly click around.

In if you don't want to convert your keyboard back and forth, got to Word and click on "Insert" then "symbol." Choose the "WP CyrillicA" font and click the letters you need one by one. Here are the spellings to copy:

The Wimbledon Tennis Championships are coming around again, and it's good to see that 'Team Romanov' has put out a strong squad again. All that practising at Livadia obviously pays off. Led by Nikolai (Davydenko) in the Men's Singles, the team also features Olga (Poutchkova and Savchuk), Tatiana (Golovin, Malek, Perebiynis, Poutchek), Maria (Kirilenko, Sharapova) and Anastasoa (Myskina, Rodionova) in the Women's event. My money's on Maria (Sharapova). Aleksandra (Wozniak) is also on the team-sheet, but I expect she'll be poorly on the day and have to withdraw. Even Alex (Bogdanovich) has put in an entry in the Junior Boys Tournament. Wish them all good luck!
-
I've read that their camp cots didn't have any pillows, and that their camp cots had small, hard pillows. Anyone know which is correct?
And if they had no pillows, that isn't very comfortable at all! Everytime I sleep without a pillow, I wake up with a stiff neck or headache, or both! Kind of mean of Nicholas and Alexandra, considering they had a comfortable bed and pillows to themselves.

Sure looks to me like they used pillows!
-
Thanks Sarushka. I never even thought of checking pictures.
Is Olga sick in the middle one? She's in a normal bed.
-
Yes, that's from when she had measles, but she is actually in her camp cot. You can tell by the striped fabric on the headboard behind the pillows.
-
thats my favorite picture of olga!
did she really need about six pillows?
for measles?
so in the other one.. is marie in the same cot?
-
Is there a different type of curtsy in Russia, weird question I know! LOL! :)
So, can anybody answer this one? ;)

Yeah, I think Maria is sleeping in her cot in that picture. You can tell from the stripes.

thanks holly!

Does anybody know a good link that could show me some of the personal belongings of OTMA?
Thanks! :)

There is a few links, I have pics of OTMA's child summer dresses and also views of their court dress.

Where was Tatiana shot?
-
Where was Tatiana shot?
Warning: gruesome...
She was shot through the back of the head, facing Olga. In FOTR, Olga was said to have been splattered with Tatiana's blood. (Reading that kind of made me feel sick. As if seeing your family die wasn't enough.)
---
I just wanted to tell everyone that my dad bought me this Rasputin figure for Christmas. It's from some sort of series of *crazy people* action figures. It's based off the "mad monk" idea of Rasputin, but it's still cool. I'll post pictures sometime.

Thanks for the reply...

Do not accept that FOTR's description is based on sound evidence.

How pathetic! High time that everone began to understand that Rasputin was not the ogre that historians in the West and commercial enterprises enjoy portraying him to be.

That's why I gave the source, and "was said to." We can never be sure of what happened that night.

Yes, but I still love my present. :-X Anything "Romanovy" is cool to me.
What's the most correct date to celebrate birthdays? For example, what date should Olga's to celebrated, the 15th or 16th, if you wanted to be as close as possible to her birthday?

I have found this and didn´t know where to put it:) It is Imperial family as presented in American opera (sounds terryfing :-\) Nicolas and Alexandra.
(clockwise starting bottom right), Terri Hill as Maria, Jessica Rivera as Anastasia, Rodney Gilfry as Nicholas, Margaret Thompson as Olga, Jonathan Price as Alexis, Michelle Fournier as Tatiana and Nancy Gustafson as Alexandra (center)

Hello,
I found some wax figures from the Yalta Museum of the Romanovs based on the 1913 portrait. They're not amazing but they're the most realistic ones I've seen.
Anastasia is the best looking by far. I couldn't believe it!! Maria isn't too bad either.

These aren't bad, although Alexei does not look like himself at all. The one of Maria is pretty good. Thanks for posting, Holly.

Do we know of a more reliable account of Tatiana's destruction?
FOTR does contain some errors, but to my knowledge no one has disputed the information regarding the execution. Certainly caution is called for in light of the known errors, but IMO this source should not be dismissed in its entirety.

I was just reading about Victoria Melita and was fascinated to find out that she is of higher birth than Alix.
VM’s grandfather was a Tsar and her uncle and her father the son of Queen Victoria…
Anyway this led me to realize (albeit belatedly) just HOW much the Royal families of Europe are inter married..
My god almost everyone is a first cousin of Alix & Nicholas lol
Just for fun I was wondering if anyone with much more knowledge than me in these matters could compile a uncle cousin aunt list?
Or however it can be done..does not have to be a list
Family trees I find can get a bit complicated
Or
Has this already been done? LoL

Anyone ever watch an older show called Mission: Impossible? I don't really like it, so I didn't watch all of it, but one show had a "holy man" that was secretly making a duchess sick and then curing her, so she'd think he was magical and he's have more influence over the duchy. One of the theories was that Rasputin was making Aleksey sick so he could cure him in front of Alix. The holy man looked just like Rasputin, and the duchess looked exactly like Alix in Nicholas and Alexandra.

it is a crib. back in the 20's when the palace was first opened to the public. they put the children's cribs in place of the beds (seeing as the children took their camp beds with them to Tobolsk and Yekaterinburg and never returned to the palace.) this picture was probably taken around that time, you can tell because, 1. the crib. and 2. all of the icons are out for show. it's the same way in N&A room....they put all the icon on the wall behind their bed for people to see.

This is so annoying it's almost funny.
I came across a website (something like channel4.com) and they have historical things. One was something on Nicholas II, George V, and Wilhelm II. They used a picture for both Nicholas and George, one where they're in England (Cowes?) standing together. On Georges section, though, they circled Nicholas, and vice versa.
And this seems to be a pretty professional website, too.

I found I REALLY good drawling of Anastasia online today!!! Here (http://babailov.homestead.com/ANASTASIA.html) by Igor Babailov...

You'd be surprised: At George V's wedding, Nicholas was apparently mistaken for the groom more than once!

the drawing of Anastasia is absolutely beautiful
i wish i could draw like that

If this had a thread by itself, it probably wouldn't be very long, so I'll put it here.
Anastasia wrote to Nicholas in 1915, thanking him for allowing her to use his bath. Then she writes that she and Maria splashed each other and played around in the water. Fourteen and sixteen is a little old for two siblings to be bathing together, even if they're both girls. Then again, they lived in a different time, and maybe weren't too shy around their own sisters. Or maybe they wore bathing suits, since they were playing around to have fun, and not to get clean? I'm hoping we can be mature about this, anyway. ;D
-
Well otma hadn't grown up in what you'd call a 'normal' environment. The sister's were pretty much all to each other in terms of companions, an probably weren't so shy because they couldn't really hide anything. Or maybe they did wear bathing suits.
And how old is 'a little too old' varies greatly from family to family. Some families aren't shy at all even in adulthood about each other's bodies.
-
I think the IF may have felt a little differently about nudity than we do today. Alexandra was very modest, but remember that the grand duchesses' photo albums contain photos of their father and brother swimming nude. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the girls were accustomed to nudity amongst themselves while dressing and bathing.
-
Anyone actually knows where this is? (really impressive Imust say!)

What was the length of Tatiana's hair around the time she died?
-
Probably somewhere between her chin and her shoulders, based on letters she wrote in early 1918 and the recollections of Isa Buxhoeveden.
-
Thanks a lot! :) ;)
Bye,Tatianochka. :)
-
What was the age for drinking when the girls(OTMA) were alive?
-
I'm not sure if there was a specific legal drinking age in Imperial Russia. If you are interested in Russian culture and drinking read Orlando Figes's Natasha's Dance; A Cultural History of Russia, or, his other book...A People's Tragedy: Russian Revolution 1891-1922.
Nicholas introduced prohibition in 1914, so it was illegal to drink...that said...we all know how well prohibition works...

-
I'm just thinking were the girls at all aloud to drink?
-
They certainly drank wine. It was considered medicinal. John Trewin's book The House of Special Purpose (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/books.html?sku=9) includes Gibbes's memories of drinking the last two bottles of wine with OTAA before their transfer to Tobolsk. They hid the bottles under the table to keep Rodionov from realizing what they were up to!
-
Did the girls have main horses that they rode? For fun and for their regiments? What colour were they and did they have names?
-
OTMA have horses for regimentals, of course. NII kept them, he loved horses. Newfound grave was disovered(of horses) which belonged to Last Tsar.
Probably dark colour, black, or dark brown. ;)
This (http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/Romanov/Pisma%20i%20umetnost/23f264d1.jpg) one is very interesting pic. Anyone know where?

I believe that brooch is painted by the same person who painted another brooch of mine that is of Anastasia from the 1911 formals. It's very pretty and painted on mother-of-pearl so the colors are even prettier in the light.
-
How do you get access to anything at GARF or in the Russian Archives?
-
I believe you may have to actually go to GARF to access the material. Raegan probably knows more about it -- she did a substantial amount of research there.
-
Do you have to be "somebody" to go to GARF? I'm sorry, I know this is off-topic.
-
I don't think so, but again, Raegan would know better than I. I'm mostly going by what she's said recently.
-
This may be a silly question but, was there Halloween in the time of OTMA in Russia? :)
-
No....Orthodox Church don't know for Halloween
But---honestly july 1918 was real Halloween.

You certainly have to be someone to go to GARF. I was not in GARF but I accessed to the Leninskaya Biblioteka and his archive. It was quite a big deal; I needed some autorisations, letters of my professors and so on. In GARF, I think you can have free access to the catalogue (only show your passport and a letter in which you explain wwhat do you want) but to work you need more. And it is normal. Imagine that every Romanov fan girl in the world will come and ask to read and have in hand the original of Olga or Tatiana's diaries. I ask you: what will stay of those precious documents in a few years!! Hope Reagan will quickly publish the result of her search.
-
A question:
The Romanov family sometimes it saw a soccer game?
Thanks for the answer
Greetings to all :)

Does anyone know what this wine was called?
-
Nope. I don't think Trewin ever identifies it. You might try Giliiard -- I believe the incident first appeared in his memoirs.
-
Speaking of wine, I was skimming through Volkov's memoirs (Chapter 16) just now and happened upon this incident in Tobolsk: "Along with the other personal effects Makarov had sent out from Tsarskoe Selo, some St. Raphael wine had come as it was prescribed by the doctors as necessary for the children. When Nikolski learned about the wine, at first he permitted the bottles in the house, then he had them reloaded onto a cart, taken down to the river and there smashed them all with an axe. (The Emperor wrote, in his diary, on that day, September 23, that this was all done out of stupid brutality. ed note by ES in original.)"
-
I found this on Youtube. Does anyone know what movie it's from?

I think it is from the 1970s BBC series "The Fall of The Eagles".

Isn't it movie Rasputin from 1966?

I don't think so. Here is the movie poster for Fall of Eagles. It was made in 1974. You see, Nicholas and Alexandra look exactly like the ones in the video clip.

Thanks, Ferah. And about the wine, I wouldn't say that the name of the wine was certainly St. Raphael's. There is the possibility, I suppose, but I was mainly just using that excerpt as another example of the IF and wine.

What kind of books and magazines did OTMA read? :)
-
Novels by famous Russian writers, I am guessing......
-
Maria was fond of a book called The Rosary, by Florence L. Barclay. You can read the full text on Project Gutenberg.
Among Olga's possessions found at the Ipatiev house was a copy of The Princess and the Goblin, given to her by her aunt Irene in 1903.

well since this is Romanov style
i thought i would share the dresses i created using some of the pictures of OTMA lol
mind you some these two were my first attempts

I think Anastasia was also very fond of a story/play called The Millionaire Girl.
I think Olga also read Les Miserables and The Hunchback Of Notre-Dame. Among possessions found at Ekaterinburg there also happened to be L'Aiglon, which was a story about Napolean II (I don't know if it was fiction or a biography). I also believe that Alix owned a copy of The Secret Garden, and it wouldn't be surprising if Olga read it, because she was regularly taking books from her mother's shelf and enjoyed reading very much.
I don't know about any magazines in particular, but Tatiana (who was very into fashion) enjoyed reading fashion magazines. She wasn't as fond of reading as Olga was, but she still did read a lot and I've read that she liked romance novels (pretty much exactly like her mother, IMO!).
So obviously the girls read a lot of fictional work. You can also check out the List of Yekaterinburg Items (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/yelist.html) page here at the AP and you will come across some books.

That little girl looks soooooo adorable in that dress! They're gorgeous!!
As for books, I remember them mentioning other titles like, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass, stories by Chekhov, War and Peace, Little Women, stories by Turgenev (hope I spelled that right), lots of classic literature and some of those syrupy novels of the time. Basically, if one of the girls read it, you can be pretty sure that the rest of them read it as well.
I've never seen Anastasia mentioning liking The Millionaire Girl in particular anywhere. I've only read that on the My Name is Anastasia site. But she did find Turgenev's stories interesting. I've also read that the girls read National Geographic Magazine occasionally.

May I ask, who is Turgenev and what kind of stories did he/she write?
Maybe you're right, Holly. I haven't read from Anastasia's own correspondance of her mentioning/favouring The Millionaire Girl, but I did read it on the My Name Is Anastasia site. Although, I have read somebody mentioning the book in a letter or diary entry - I think it may have been either Nikolai or one of the girls?

*the Czar's daughter, Grand Duchess Olga (1895-1918), would wed Serbia's Crown Prince Alexander,
*the Czar's second daughter, Grand Duchess Tatiana (1897-1918), was promised to Rumania's Crown Prince Charles (1893-1959).
I read the above on a site and was wondering if it is true that Olga and Tatiana were at some point promised to these men?
-
I think promised is not good word.
I have read Alexander would marry Olga, we discussed about it, he came to Russia at time Olga was nurse. Only friendly ralationship between them. As far we know.
Only know that, Alexander was very sad when he heard what happened to IF in 1918.
For Tatiana I don't know.
-
I think that it was considered that Olga would marry the Romanian Prince.
-
Yes, you're right; IF visited Romania, in 1914 about that.
Also, I mentioned later time about Olga......
But - who knows?

NAOTMAA (http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/Romanov/weeee-1.jpg) ;)
I found this very interesting. :D
-
It is interesting indeed. Where did you find it? Do you know from what movie it is?
I have seen an old newspaper article with a headline Marriages to ensure the Balkan peace (or something like that) a there were reporter´s speculations about Olga marriying Alexander, and Tatiana marrying Carol, and one other princess (I think Romanian) to marry another prince.... So maybe the information about girls eing !promised" to these men comes from the article..... Tsar really didn´t intent to give anyone but Olga to Carol. I suspect, that when the prince asked for Maria, Tsar refused not only because Maria was too young, but because the princ didn´t want Olga....
-

From one Russian web. I think it is an play. ;)
Nicholas indeed said Maria was too young for marrying.
-
just a thought -
do you think that OTMA was upset at having their heads shaved?
i think they were but learned to accept it
-
Gilliard wrote they took it with humor. And Tatiana wrote to a friend, that it´s not as bad as it was when she had had her head shaved in 1913 since that time she wasn´t alone.

When was that picture shown in Romanovy Ventsenosnaya Semya?
-
Nena, do you have the original of that photograph? Did they do their own formal photographs exactly like the Imperial Family did?
-
I don't know really if they did formal photos like in Nicholas and Alexandra , for example.
I don't have original, and I think that one haven't been seen in Romanovy.

That monument is interesting. I don't really like the closed eyes, but I guess it's probably alluding to their deaths. Any idea where it's located?

I found it on Russian web, but I think language is French, probably scanned from book. Letters are from IF's exile, IMO.

In Moscow, if I remember correct. Yes, it was made to show Ipatiev night.
Also, the mounment is called Ipatiyevskaya Noch--Ipatiev's night.

Yes, this is French!! It informs about places and dates of the shots of the pictures.

right here it goes -
Olga's hair was blonde right?
was it really blonde as in the top 'wig' on my photo?
or darker as in the redbrown/red as in the photo?
heres the photo - "http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f295/tom_romanov/page22.jpg"
thanks for the help
tom :)
-
Tom, IMO, her hair was light brown, like the third one on your photo! :)
-
:o really !? i thought that would be Anastasia's
-
I've always heard Olga's hair described as chestnut brown -- probably a shade between the third and fourth wigs in your photo.
IMO, Anastasia's hair is best represented by the second sample, though perhaps it should be a little darker. I believe Tatiana's was the darkest of all (like sample #4), and Maria's was somewhere in between Olga & Tatiana.
-
From what I've always heard:
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f297/Romanov_Albums/My%20Photo%20Manipulations/th_otmahair.jpg) (http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f297/Romanov_Albums/My%20Photo%20Manipulations/otmahair.jpg)
-
Bit more reddish to Anastasia, little less reddish to Tatiana and that would be just perfect Holly!
-
Faberge's miniature portraits of the children could also provide some clues -- I think it's safe to presume their colorings were fairly accurate.
1911:

thaks everyone for their help. also on your last photo Sarushka could you please tell me what i colours they are i am colour blind and to me it's sort of all blonde on the 1911 bit and the 1915/16 its brown !
thanks
from my pic i think it will go ( for my project thing)
O - light brown
T- dark brown
M - brown
A - red
agreed?
tom
PS those are the wigs i am using for OTMA in my room display. ive already ordered the 4 dolls but their bald and those are the only wigs i could find
-
Anastasia's hair wasn't exactly red. It was dark blonde like Olga's but with a coppery glint. Like what you might call a strawberry-blonde. Tatiana had the darkest hair and it had some red in it to. Maria's was simply light brown.
If you've seen the picture of Nicholas' hair clippings from when he was three years old, you would have a good estimation of Anastasia's hair color. It's the same strawberry-blonde color.
-
Oh Holly ! Do you have this picture ? It will be so interesting to see it!

-
This is wonderful ! Thank you Sarushka !
-
so what colour wig should i use for Anastasia?
-
I would say the redbrown, Tom. That is probably the closest. I wouldn't use the really blonde one on top. Olga could be the light brown, Maria the brown, and Tatiana the dark brown. :)
-
thanks everyone for sorting that out ;D
i think i will do those colour's Holly :)
tom

I don´t remember the site, but you don´t need to worry. i already checked it and there was no other calender than this one. And it doesn´t seem they´re planning on making anew one.

That's a shame. I suppose we could make our own - that might be fun

YAY :) I´m working on it.... Just have to take some high quality photos...

Where on earth is this horrible wax works so that we can all avoid it like the plague. Tasteless in the extreme. Rather like having a wax works of the assassination of JFK or the car crash of Dania Princess of Wales. Who on earth would want to see it?

Somewhere in Russia... I didn´t post the most terrible one - the one of Nicolas. You know, Rasputin and just everybody is "alive" there, just this thing is...different.

Never heard of it too. Any more info Nena? i sit possible to get to the movie somewhere?
I have found another wax figures, this time it´s ORmanov execution. No need to say the figures don´t like IF....

Are there more movie photos? And could someone post the last diary entry of Tatiana?

Tatiana's last surviving diary entry is from 24 October 1916. I have the text in Russian -- Royal Sisters of Mercy (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/books.html?sku=64), page 222 -- which I can scan for you if you like.
Apparently the exercise book Tatiana used for the remainder of 1916 and into 1917 has been lost or destroyed.

I have those! Haha.
Those wax figures are awful...but at least they don't look at all realistic.
I tried my best at translating Tatiana's diary. Maybe Sarah could clean it up:
From Tatiana Nicholaievna’s diary.
Monday, October 24th.
In the morning went to the Sign(?), from there to the lazaret. Has tied up Baron Shtakelberga, Ulyanov, Peter in the chamber. Has come to all. Played with Prince Zristovym in a flea beetle against Zenchenko and Petrova. Had breakfast at five with Papa, Mama, Peter and Sandro. After -- a lesson. Walked again with Papa in the garden, Mama -- in zkypazhe(?). After, sat at Yzi and worked. Music lesson is now. Had dinner with Papa and Mama. After a little bit sat below, went to say goodbye with Alexei. Worked below for Mama. Anya was there. Then Papa came, to read ridiculous stories Teffy. Remained till 11:45. Mama - on a couch. Called in lazaret, there all blagopoluchno, temperatures normal. At Papa and Alexei nasmork(?), but not strong. Tomorrow will leave. Awfully sad.

Bad news the photo from the Cellar is not the entire IF. The woman standing between Olga and Anastasia is not Tatiana that is the maid. Tatiana in the film had short hair.
I doublechecked Laura's site and there is no photo of the entire IF in that scene.

Not bad, Holly! Here's my version -- feel free to correct:
In the morning went to Znamenie, from there to the lazaret. Bandaged Baron Shtakelberg, Ulyanov, Petrovski in the ward. Dropped in on all. Played with Prince Eristov at tiddlywinks against Zenchenko and Petrova. Breakfast at 5 with Papa, Mama, Petrovski, and Sandro. After -- lessons. Walked again with Papa in the garden, Mama in the carriage. After, sat with Isa and worked. Drank tea with Papa and Mama. Worked, after reading. Now will have a music lesson. Lunched with Papa and Mama. After a little bit sat downstairs, went to say goodbye to Aleksei. Worked downstairs with Mama. Anya was there. Then Papa came, and read to us funny stories by Teffa[?]. [We] remained until 11:45. Mama -- on the sofa. Called the lazaret, everything there [is] well, temperatures normal. Papa and Aleksei have colds, but not severe. Tomorrow they leave. Awfully sad.

Thanks for cleaning it up, Sarah!

Never seen the painting this big! It´s also lablled as the year 1912. Would it be possible that the famous photo set of the girls wearing kokoshniki could be actually from 1912 and not 1911?

It would be weird, Olga was sixteen in 1912, she wouldn't have the pony tail.
They both are beautiful paintings, thanks for sharing!

Well, she was sixteen in November right? There´s plenty of time for the photos to be taken....
-
Yes, she was sixteen in November, but in 1911 not in 1912!
Or maybe, 1912 was the year when this painting was made...

So that's the title of the Russian movie I have. I bought it at a library sale in my town. I can't understand it, but it's fun to watch. Is the boy in the link you posted Katenka supposed to be Nicholas II?

Finally we can see OTMA written somewhere!

OTMAA from a Japanese comic called "Anastasia Club"
You know, I downloaded this manga years ago, and even debated putting it online, but the story is really bizzare, and I don't even think it's been finished. (let alone fan-translated)
Would people be interested in this?
-
Well, maybe... What exactly is that supposed to be?
-
I definitely am!!
I've seen OTMA written somewhere before but it was written as O.T.M.A. Not just OTMA. And we've also never seen the girls refer to themselves as OTMA themselves.

Olga

What an odd article. It's allegedly from 1908, but clearly the image is taken from the 1910 formals -- they've just altered her hair to make it look like she's wearing it all up. Olga wasn't yet 16, and Aleksei hadn't been dangerously ill at Spala. And all that malarkey about succession? Seems like the L.A. Times wasn't too reliable back in the 1900's!
-

That was probably the poem by Petrov. It's the only other place I've seen O.T.M.A. It's in Nicholas II: The Imperial Family (http://www.alexanderpalace.org/palace/books.html?sku=20), but I can't scan it without breaking the paperback binding. Maybe I'll try to take a digital photo of it...
-
That would be great Sarushka!

I felt the same way as you do. I didn't think anyone would like it since there is not much OTMA in it at all. Though, I thought some would be interested to atleast see how they drew OTMA. =)

I almost understood the letter but what is "П.В.П" Or on english "P.V.P"?
-
THose are initial of Petr Vasilyevich Petrov (I hopw I´ve got the patronymic right)

Aaaa i see thanks with some missunderstood the letter is very normal... "O.T.M.A" were speaking about the things which are happening in the "court" if i can say it.... I will post what i can translate...

Yes, you're right. He wrote the poem for O.T.M.A.

Absolutely -- he was Russian tutor of OTMAA, ok?

I love the paintings and the drawings all of you posted here, forum mates! Keep it up!

And Ahh, you keep finding those rare-ones :)

I found this quote and didn't know where to post it. I hope it's OK if I post it here.

Thanks for this quote, Grand Duchess Jennifer! Just discovered this today..Totally new.
-
I don't know what year it was, as it was undated. Sorry.
-
I was thinking that we should have a thread with everybody's stories in it instead of everybody making a new thread for just one story. But before I make it, I would like to know if anybody else thinks it's a good idea.
Sorry that I posted the idea here; I didn't know where else to put it.

According to Frances Welch's book, A Romanov Fantasy, that quote is attributed to Dr. Botkin, not Nicholas II. (See page 45 (http://books.google.com/books?id=zMHLOncJpmsC&pg=PA45&lpg=PA45&dq=%22What+better+symbol+of+the+Grand+Duchesses+could+there+be+than+those+flowers%22&source=bl&ots=Mg7zhYvKg1&sig=xygDbk3OjI6QRuaLt01-fIdL5Qs&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=1&ct=result#PPA45,M1).)

I did not read that book, I found the quote on the internet. So thank you for that information. :)

What were the names of OTMAA's other teachers, besides Gilliard, Petrov, and Gibbes?
-
Voeikov -- aritmethic, for example(only to Aleksei) For geography I don't know.
-
Were they taught Calculus? That subject's so difficult! (I have it now)
I think the arithmetic taught to OTMAA were geometry and Algebra. Am I right?
-
Count Voeikov said in his book, that he had lessons of arithmetic to him(Aleksei). I heard spectaculation he was very bad with maths when he was 12. And, understading subjects is invidual thing -- someone loves maths(like I do), someone don't, etc.
-
And, understading subjects is invidual thing -- someone loves maths(like I do), someone don't, etc.
The second is my case :) I´m glad I don´t have to do any math again :)
-
Yes it's my case too.....Just the things with me are that i'm good in algebra and awful in geometry...xaxa
-
I'm no good at any Math. I prefer doing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division! Those are just my maths!
You're so lucky, nena. Kristinna_KJD (my classmate) is so good in Calculus, an engineering subject! I'm glad I'm going to suffer thatin a matter of five weeks remaining on our school year !! Bye bye Calculus!
-
I finally found a list of teachers, for Maria at least.
Religion Teacher Archpriest A. Vasilyev
Arithmetic Teacher Sobolev
Russian Teacher Petrov
German Teacher Kleikenburg
French Teacher Gilliard(and another French teacher named Nikil)
History Teacher Ivanov
Music Teacher Conrad
Dancing Instructor H. Christenson
English Teacher S. Gibbs
-
Wow! Where did you find that Clockworkgirl? It's amazing! Now I finally know who all of the teachers were! :)
-
It was in the list of Maria's expenses on the main page.
-
Too bad that there is not a page like that for all of OTMAA. I guess we'll just have to assume that they had the same teachers.

Not surprisingly a Russian site with antiques. There were also little easter eggs with Initials of Imperial family and several portraits. I´ll try to find it again.
-
I knew I could do it :)

Wow, Ally! That is a VERY cool website. 8)
-
Very cool, Ally! But I don't want to bring anyone's spirits down. However, I'm not sure if you're trying to show that it's the same pram as in the photos of Olga in it. The one in the modern photo has too many spokes, unless the wheels were replaced at a later time?
-
Maybe it's an example of what time the pram is from?
-
It may have belonged to IF, but not necesserily to Olga.

Yes. And my best guess is the men in the front are Alexander III. on the right and Alexander II. on the left.

OK. Thanks for letting me know.

I found the website where that was made..... and even though that was the only Romanov one there are still others that are supposed to be different royal families. The link is http://www.chrisbeetles.com/gallery/artist.php?art=1975 .

Gosh, that pic looks scary! And so do the others on this site. :o ... ;)

I can't see where is the problem. As for me, I find those drawings cute even if they looked to me weird at the first sight. They remind me of Beatrix Potter's ones.
Thank you for the link, Grand Duchess Jennifer.

I wonder who made that profane photo.
It says at the top of the page "Susan Herbert", so that might be the persons name.

I agree. I don't see anything wrong with them.
-
"Profane" doesn't refer exclusively to something obscene -- it can also mean non-religious or irreverent, both of which I think are appropriate to this image. ;-)
-
Well, I didn't know that "profane" may refer to something obscene - and that is not the meaning it implied when I told my opinion. I don't see anything disrespectful towards the IF in this image. :)

I considered it profane since the IF are now saints, right? (hihihi) :-)

Ally, I love to own such kind of clock! I'm sure you want to own one, aren't you?
Ells, That photo's so serene! I think it was taken on the early forties (???)

Actually... no, I wouldn´= t want such clock. They are terrible if you ask me :) But I´m planning to print out several of my favourite Imperial photos and have them framed.
-
Do such clocks boom on 12 midnight? If those do, i would change my mind. :- [

But I´m planning to print out several of my favourite Imperial photos and have them framed.
Actually i did and it's very nice...They are on the wall next to my bed....It's good to wake up with OTMA and go to sleep with OTMA....

Attention Granduchess Ally and Grand Duchess Jennifer: I do not normally have any particular interest in this Section, but today I chanced to see Replies 392, 393 and 394 and am surprised to see that no one correctly identified the two men at the bottom of the illustration in Reply #392. They are CORRECTLY (left) the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and (right) the Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich, both paternal uncles of the Emperor Nicholas II. (Note to GD Ally: I continue to review the very strong contributions that you and "MissSLOom" frequently make to the "OTMA Forum- four dearest angels" . Even though there are only 29 members, a large number of "guests" seem to monitor/visit it. Regards, AP) AP

And I'm one of the newbies there! Nice to find a good forum where discussions are about OTMA and the rest again!

Thank you for identifying the two men. I´m ashamed to admit that my knowledge of these Romanovs is not that great. I´m still at the beggining - strating with Nicolas and his family, continuing with family of Alexander II., I´m only getting familiar with Alexander II. and other numerous Romanov men. :)
As for the OTMA forum - I hope it was a compliment :) That forum i love dearly, but it is a place to have fun for me more than anything else...
-
Attention "Grand Duchess Ally" : Thank you for your response! The two men identified are each interesting in their own ways, IMO, particularly the GD Vladimir A. He had a very loud, "booming" voice that could be identified at once. He was also a patron of the arts. Both are a good source of the life, times and faults of this interesting family, the Romanovs. Off-topic, but in relation to your remark/s about the "OTMA Forum- four dearest angels": Yes, indeed, my remarks to you and Miss SLOom, were absolutely complimentary. "Clever, inventive, educated" are some of the adjectives that come to mind, including both of your knowledge of the English language. IMO, it is a pity that the same can't be said for a few of that Forum membership, but then those 2 or 3 have always been "different", even though English is their native tounge. It is amazing what people will post! I find humorous amazement in some of the very odd topics begun and posted, such as "Rapture, end of the world? ," etc. (Additionally one member should think again before posting such personal injury details over family situations. I think that this person realized it, when others seemed so shocked that the poster would tell absolute strangers such revealing information. If you post it "in the open", it WILL be read.) However, I most definitely agree with you, that little Forum is a "place to have fun, more than anything else." ) Best regards, AP
-
Actually i would like to put a question...Didn't wanted to make new topic and decided to ask here....All people when they wrote in google "The Romanovs" is taking out a photo of the last imperial family...you can see that....And when i say to somebody "The Romanovs" they are saying "Aaa yes Nicky's family) i don't think this is completly right to say...Because it was Romanov Dynasty...And it's not correct when i wrote somewhere Romanov to take out only their famous photo in1913...What about Xenia? What about Olga A? They all had their own families and their family again is called Romanovs....Since they are carring the blood....And if we return to the begining of the dynasty..... I may not be correct but hope you understand what i meant....
-
Olga´s family were not Romanovs :)
I understand what you mean, but Nicky and OTMAA were "the main" line of the dynasty, therefore it is completely understandable they are called the Romanovs. Buit you could of course put a lable "Romanovs" to a picture (for example) of Pavel Alexandrovich´s family or any other of the Grand Dukes.

It could very well be Nicholas, it does look like him. But to me it also looks like Emperor Napoleon III. It's a shame the markings are faded.
-
I'm sure it's Nicky everywhere is labeled as him...sorry for the " ?" can't remove it
-
oh! :D I've noticed alot of NicholasII coins up for sale over the internet recently
-
While there are exceptions, generally the silver coins of Russia depicting Nicholas II are not rare at all. ( Besides rarity, CONDITION is really quite important in collecting coins. ) There are also "replicas" being sold of the more expensive ones, including "gold." Only a neophyte collector would be fooled. ALWAYS use a reputable dealer, with return privileges upon inspection. AP

Ahhh,

It's not a real photo. All the photos the family took were black and white, weren't they? Also, Anastasia sometimes coloured the black and white photos.

Also I'm sure that they didn't have tarmac roads back then

I'm gonna sound like a fool, but I never noticed it was a road :-[

It's clearly labeled Nagorny, but he looks much more like Derevenko to me. I wonder if the artist made a mistake?
-
Defitinely. He/she also labelled a picture of Tatiana as "Princess Olga".
-
True but still he/she draw it good since it's pretty hard to draw someone from the Romanov's....
-
I noticed indeed man looks more as Derevenko to me. There is photo where it was too hard to define who is -- D or N? I always thought it is Derevenko, but it is not.

You mean the train-station then.... I had somewhere the picture of it, I´ll take a look for resemblance.

I always heard that that drawing was just an artists rendering of what it might have looked like. It's supposed to be Alexandra, Nicholas, and Maria arriving in Ekaterinburg but Maria looks more like a version of herself from an earlier time. Notice her hair is long.

Mabey the artist decided not to pay much attention to Maria, after all she was just a daughter and another Romanov (in their eyes). They probably wanted to ephaisis Nicholas and Alexandra and their position.

-
That painting gives me the creeps, but it's still great! I'll bet in real life, Ivan the Terrible was haunted by those he killed. The picture of the man lighting the candles for the icons of Nicholas and Alix almost made me cry, too. I was going to stay up until midnight last year to hold a vigil for them on the 90th anniversary, but I was on vacation at my grandparent's home in Bangkok, and I can't remember if I was too tired, my mom made me go to bed, or I just flat out forgot.

They should do one for Stalin. But come to think of it, they probably couldn't find a canvas big enough for all his victims.

No, it is physically possible (if you have a canvas that's the size of Russia itself). ;)

Those are great, though that's true they don't have many ressemblances with the true Romanovs, especially Alexei (who looks too old IMO) and Alix. But that's still a wonderful job. :)
-
The costumes are pretty much dead on. But yeah, they don't look much like the actual people. Oh well...
-
Most of them don't look like the real thing, the costumes are pefect, and (holy cow!) Minnie looks like Baroness Buxhoeveden!
-
I think Alexander looks a bit like he did...but the costumes are stunning besides. (I love Alexandra's!)

Two weeks ago, I went to Disney Paris. While I was doing the queue in the Tower of Terror, I saw this portrait on the wall (BTW, sorry for the picture) :

-
A portrait of Maria Alexandrovna in the Tower of Terror in Disneyland Paris?...amazing! :)
-
The portrait is my favourite but why she is was putted in The Tower of Terror?Just wondering
-
I have no idea...the "Tower of Terror" is indeed a strange place for a portrait of an Empress...
-
Wow,
Somebody doesn't know their Russian history very well....
I can see Ivan the Terrible being there in "The Tower of Terror"; but poor Maria Alexandrovna??? She's the least likely person to be there...
Larry
-
Well i agree with Vecchiolarry... Strange but maybe there is some reason...
-
Maybe they just put on a random portrait of a lady from the late 1800s and it happened to be Maria Alexandrovna.
-
maybe they were afraid of Russians. That's kind of insulting, though.
-
Oh no, I don't think they're afraid of Russians ! The attraction takes place in a old hotel, deserted because it's haunted. It a very very well-decorated place, and I think they hang the portrait to add prestige to the place.
-
I agree. If you think of the older hotels (and I guess newer ones too) with beautiful furnishings, potted palms, expensive paintings, and such- that is what the hotel for Tower of Terror is set to look like. I don't think that they meant anything by putting a portrait of Maria Alexandrovna on the wall. It was just a painting that looked nice and would fit in to the setting.
-
Solution found, then.

Yup, Ells, it's so lovely...
Oh none. I only saw that one.

I didn't know where else to put this, since I'm not sure if it is true or not. So I'm sorry if this is the wrong place.
I was flipping through books at a book store, and came upon this: Tsar Nicholas II considered putting an electric fence around Russia. Anyone know about that? I read it in a book called http://www.bathroomreader.com/pilot.asp?pg=throne_topsecret_med#TOP , so it's not a very reliable source.
-
I got book full with quotes from papers about the royals...
Nicholas II completely incompetent
January 23, 1905
Former Ambassador to Russia, Andrew White has made the following statement concerning the situation in St. Petersburg:
"If the Czar is a weak man, as the present Emperor is, he can do very little. A week man cannot know an anything about the empire to speak of, because he is surrounded by Grand Dukes, women &c., who tell him what they want him to believe and keep all the truth away from him which they do not wish him to hear.
"The main difficulty in the whole case is that the Emperor is supposed to do all the thinking for 140,000,000 of people, scattered over the largest territory possessed by any Government in the world with all sorts of different races, religions and ideas, and this no man can do, and least of all in a time life this.
"The simple fact is that the evils of the old system have now become absolutely intolerable. And when you add to that facat the sending off of immense numbers of the best young men in the country to an utterly useless and wicked war, and the pressure of taxation which grinds the people to the dust, you have a situation which none but the very strongest rulers in human history can cope with.
"The Czar has no strength of character, no proper education, and is hopelessly unfit to grapple with the situation.
"No doubt the worst of the features of the situation have been kept from him.
Mr. White believed that advisors to the Russian emperor would recommend a policy similar to that of Nicholas I, who sent the "ringleaders of the insurrection of eighty years ago shot, hanged, or sent to Siberia." He did not believe "that important changes to Russia could be long delayed.
Andrew Dickson White served as ambassador to Russia from 1892 to 1894. He later served as the USA's first ambassador to Germany. He is also a co-founder of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Latest Rumor: Nicholas II still alive
January 8, 1919
"It is necessary to treat with reserve" a story sent by a special correspondent of the London newspaper, the Morning Post at Archangel. The correspondent writes: "A friend of mine, Prince M, who has just arrived here from Petrograd, informed me that he had a long talk with Grand Duke Cyril on November 18. The Grand Duke told him that he had just received a letter from Grand Duchess Tatiana, daughter of the Emperor, who wrote that the Empress and her daughters were still alive, and the Emperor had not been shot.
"The Bolshevik officer who was ordered to carry out the sentence of death told the Emperor that it was a matter of indifference to him who was shot. He had orders to produce a corpse -- bullets in the head of a victim would make identification impossible.
Count T, who was present at the conversation, offered to sacrifice himself, saying he considered it was his duty to lay down his life for his sovereign. The Emperor protested vehemently, but was overruled by Count T and the officer. The Emperor escaped, but no one knows where he is at the present time.
Dr. Botkin has also written to his sister to the effect that the 'greatest crime of the twentieth century has miscarried.'"
The Associated Press reported in a dispatch dated December 24 with a Warsaw dateline that Michael de Tchihatchef, a nephew of General Skoropadski, as the source for this story. Nicholas II's former military attaché, Count Tatchev, was named as the victim, who was shot instead of the Tsar.
It must be repeated that this story be treated with "reserve," as there is no verification from Grand Duke Cyril.

Chronology about rumors and gossips in 1918 and aftermath, relating the survivance of IF, reply to Elly's post:
According to memories of Count V. N.V. Voeikov
Russian newspaper about IF murders:
June 6th, 1918 --- Tsar was killed, Heir is alive.
June 10th 1918 --- Tsar was killed, Heir died.
June 12th, both news were confuted. And on July 6th, news were that Tsar was executed, and later the whole family. Also, they were stories about saving IF from Tobolsk.....

I was flicking through Royal Russia album last night when I came across this photo -"http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f295/tom_romanov/otmaresting1916.jpg"
And I noticed something I haven't seen before. We all know that Anastasia is either smoking or pretending too, but when I looked at Olga's left hand I notice something inbetween her fingers. Could it be a cigarette?
I don't know but I just thought I'd publish it as it was new for me.
-
I think this could be fag-end....you know when you end smoking the cigarette and the filtrate is remaining....
-
I don't want to use text talk, but OMG! I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
-

Excuse me are you laughing at my post?Where is the reason to "laugh or cry" ?
If you are "laughing and crying" on my post i must warn that English is not my native so tryed to be clear what it looks to me...
-
Tom, it has been discussed already. Look at one of Olga's threads.
And I should support Elly -- language of many posters is not their native (mine neither). So, before giving any upshot, keep this on minds! But again, we are not 'fortune tellers' to know in advance abuot another poster's language.

I believe she means a "cigarette butt."

I'm not making fun of your English as I am around a lot of people who are not native speakers anyways. My point is I'm seriously freaking out about the cigarettes! Everything I know is a lie! :O

What about the cigarettes?Didn't you know OTMA smoke?
-
*Gasp* My moment of "SAY WHAT?!?" I think I'll go sit in my room and die, now. I'm depressed. :'(
-
I was like that too when I found out. I thought ' how could they do something so bad?' but then someone pointed out the me that they were only human and that at that period in history, people did not know the effects of smoking and it was seen as new, exotic and fashionable. In a way you could say OTMA were just following a trend amoung young women at that time.
although I haven't heard of Maria smoking?
-
Yes, girls smoked. But in that way, to relax their nerves during war.
Come on, don't be depressed.
I know you are not making fun of anybody's language, I only say that here many of the posters are not native English speakers.
My apologies if I offended you.
As welll as for Maria, I am not sure, either.
-
The only people that have offended me are the grand duchesses. But I suppose I would have done the same thing if I lived in that time. Still, they were so young!
Wait, Maria didn't smoke? I'm saved! *happy moment*
-
No i know that Maria also smoked since i've seen a photo of her hodling cigarette and it was discuss ...accept that all OTMA were smoking look i've seen one of Alexei holding too but i think he was just posing...Alexandra would not allow him
-
Ah! Thanks for clearing that up Elly, once again your vast knowledge has helped us all...
And Anastasia Spalko, I'm sure the grand duchesses didn't mean to offend you ;)
-
Smoking was not only common in that time, it was prescribed by doctors to calm the nerves and, specifically in woman to lose weight.

That could be part of the reason the girls (with the exception of Anastasia) looked skinnier in their later days. o_o <hmm...)

Aww, man...

Yes, that´s right. Even more so - why wouldn´t Maria smoke when everybody else in the family did?

Makes sense that she smoked then :)

True, even Alexandra had her special French cigarettes for her nerves.
But I think we're covering well trodden ground now...

What do leap years do to the different calenders when comparing them? Would everyone's NS birthday be bumped up for the year, like Olga's would be November 17?
This might be a stupid question, but math is simply beyond me.

Grand Duchess Olga wanted to visit the USA
At least, this is what the Los Angeles Times reported on June 8, 1913. The paper's account, based on cables from Europe, stated that Grand Duchess Olga 's travel plans were to include Washington, Newport and New York in "a few months." The newspaper erroneously described Olga as the heir presumptive (due to the "rather delicate heir apparent." Even in 1913, newspapers could not get their royal succession facts right!
Olga was "exceedingly anxious to visit America," but that her mother "stoutly opposes the idea, which simply enhances the determination of her daughter to put it into execution."
Although Prime Minister Witte was said to support the idea, as he believed that Olga's visit would "help materially to improve Russian-American relations," apparently strained during the William Howard Taft administration.
Utter tosh. Nicholas and Alexandra would never have allowed their eldest daughter to travel alone (although she would have a large retine with her), prior to arranging a marriage for their daughter. Young and unmarried daughters of the Russian emperor did not get on ships to travel to the US to fly the flag to improve Russo-American relations.
-
Copied from "Life"
On January 6, 1901, the Los Angeles Times published an article: "Czar's Children All Girls; Throne without an Heir." To be specific, the Russian throne did have an heir, Grand Duke Michael, who was Nicholas II's youngest brother. But in 1901, there was no direct male heir. It was not yet known that the Empress Alexandra was pregnant with her fourth child, a daughter, Anastasia, who was born in June. According to this article, which featured a new sketch of the three young Grand Duchesses, Nicholas apparently said when Olga was born "Had our baby been a boy, he would have belonged to the nation, but our little Olga belongs to us."
The writer makes a comment, now seen to be wistful, "Although the little Grand Duchesses can never hope to inherit the throne, they can be pretty sure of becoming queens if they grow up." If they grow up. How prescient. According to this article, Queen Victoria, "who is the greatest royal matchmaker in Europe," had earmarked one of the grand duchesses as a future spouse for six-year-old Prince Edward of York (the future Edward VIII.) At the time this article was published, Queen Victoria had only three weeks left to live.
The article also noted that the Czarina was a first cousin to Kaiser Wilhelm II, "whose boys will be looking for suitable princesses before long."
Although it is unlikely that Nicholas II would ever have considered changing the succession laws to primogeniture, U.S. and British newspapers speculated that the law would be changed to allow for Grand Duchess Olga to succeed her father "in the event of the death" of her younger brother. This was reported in 1903, as well, a year before Alexis' birth. This was reported in the LA Times in November 1908.
Women had the right to succeed, but only after all of the men in the family.
In 1911, there were reports that Olga was going to marry Prince Boris -- the future King Boris III -- of Bulgaria, and that the engagement would be announced on November 15th. The Washington Post's article, which was written by the Marquise de Castellane, noted that Olga's chief regret would be to leave her younger brother to whom she was devoted. The engagement was approved by Russia, "but Bulgaria's defiance of Russia has shattered it. The Grand Duchess is said to heartbroken."
A year later, the Los Angeles Times and other papers reported that Nicholas II was about to announce the date for the marriage between Olga and Grand Duke Dimitri Pavlovich. Dimitri was Nicholas' first cousin. "The wedding is to be a very brilliant affair, to be followed by a state ball at which the elite of Russian and foreign society will be present. It is in every respect a love match."
Pure fiction, perhaps. In 1914, it was reported that Dimitri was going to renounce his imperial rights in order to marry Miss Alice Durham, a young American woman, whom he met at a St. Petersburg ice rink.
A headline in the New York Times on November 9, 1914, stated "Marriage of Czar's Daughter and Roumania's Heir May Affect the War." The proposed marriage had been announced, according to the paper, the previous March, between Olga and Crown Prince Carol of Roumania. Earlier there also had been rumors that Carol was going to marry Olga's sister, Tatiana. In 1913, news reports linked Tatiana with the Prince of Wales: "Gossip has it that the heir to Great Britain's throne is very much in love with Princess (sic) Tatiana, second daughter of the Czar of Russia.
Another Romanov cousin, Grand Duke Boris, the son of Grand Wladimir Alexandrovitch and Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna, pursued Olga. Alix wrote to Nicholas on January 28, 1916: "Oh could but our children be equally blessed in their married lives - the idea of Boris is too unsympathetic and the child would, I feel convinced, never agree to marry him and I should perfectly well understand her.
Tragically, the Grand Duchesses never got married. They were murdered with their parents, siblings and loyal servants in July 1917. It is unlikely that Tatiana and Carol would have had a happy marriage, but at least, she would have survived the Revolution. The same could be said if the stories about Olga and Boris or Olga and King Alexander of Serbia (who was said to be fond of her). As Queen of Bulgaria, she may have been able to do something to secure her family's release.
There were also stories of romances with soldiers. Tatiana had become close to Dimitri Malama, an officer in the Life Guards Regiment. In 1916, Alexandra wrote to her husband after seeing Malama for the first time in more than a year: "Looks flourishing more than a man now, and adorable boy still. I must say, a perfect son-in-law he wld. have been. Why are foreign Pces. not as nice!" However, much Alix liked Malama, he would not have been a suitable husband for a Grand Duchess. Nor would Olga be allowed to develop a relationship with another officer, Pavel Voronov.
The war changed their lives. Marital opportunities came and went. The family grew closer, became more inclusive. By 1917, it was too late to find husbands for the two oldest Grand Duchesses. Nicholas had lost his throne, the family was under arrest, and in the next year, they would all be dead.

Aimone and Olga
Are they? Or aren't they? That is the question? Will they continue to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous speculation? They are not the most public of couples -- and they have been engaged for three years now. Prince Aimone of Savoy-Aosta, Duke of Apulia, and Princess Olga of Greece have been together for three years now. But there has been no movement toward arranging a wedding. Aimone, 40, and Olga, 35, have lived together in Russia, where Aimone works. Late last year, they attended the baptism of one of Aimone's relatives. I was sent photographs from this event but due to copyright restrictions (and family privacy), I cannot publish the photos. I can say, however, that Aimone and Olga came to the celebrations, as a couple.
Yes, Olga's biological clock is ticking away but perhaps she and Aimone are happy with the status-quo. Why do they need to marry? Is it perhaps because Aimone is the last male in line to the former Italian throne, as well as the only heir to the Aosta title? Is it because their marriage would be seen by royal watchers as a true dynastic alliance. Princess Olga is the younger daugher of Prince Michael of Greece (who ceased to be a Greek dynast when he married Marina Karella in 1965. ) Aimone's cousin, Emamuele Filiberto, is married to a French actress, and they have two daughters. (Princess Clotilde is young enough to have another child.)
Perhaps -- and this is speculation on my part -- Aimone and Olga have no real interest in a "dynastic marriage." There is no throne to inherit.
The Duke of Aosta, who now considers himself as head of the Italian royal family, would certainly announce an end to the engagement on his official website. Perhaps they are happy to live together!

You must excuse the last part which is about Greece...but anyway

Great find. Now I'm going to try and find a skating ring down here in the warm ole South and learn how to do stuff like that. Now let's see, Google "skating rings in Atlanta, Georgia", nearest skating ring: Cincinnati, Ohio.

It is not wery difficult to learn some figure skating elements if you are not afraid to fall. I am skating for 4 years (not professionally) and it is a great pleasure.

Do we have any other Georgian peaches on here who can tell me where to find a skating ring? If you are a Georgian (from the state, not country), please tell me!

Now that is wonderful one. Well done on finding it. That painting has dual nature. Both Tsarist and Communist's one. It is just wonderful. In the first row we see Saints from early Russian period and early forming of Russian country, I would guess 7th century, throughout Middle Ages, up to founding the Romanov dynasty, and aftermath, all the Emperors. Fall of the Empire and the tumult, we can see ship 'Aurora' on the upper - right side, and on the left, heaven, heart of Moscow, and all bad consequences. It is Ruskaya Golgota, I'd say. All thorny way Russian people endured during Red's era. And Little Tsarevich, as a Crown of image, symbolically the one who was innocent, and spilled blood for all the sins.

My Russian professor always gives me copies of Russian Life magazine and I finally found time to scan an article from the July/August 2009 issue. It's called "Romanov Worship" and it's very interesting.

I have seen it also but I am uncertain about the place. Could it be Ekaterinburg? Am just guessing.

Thank you, Nena!
-
Nena, is it in situ permanently, or just an exhibit until it finds a home? Personalty I find the thing rather ugly, as these monuments go.Looks sort of Stalinesques style.
-
I really don't know. It doesn't look like it is movable. I appreciate any kind of art, and it took time to make, and so, but I dislike it too.
-
The reason I asked is that the sculpture does not fir the surrounding wall, which does look permanent. Also, Nicholas is seated crookedly. There are other details, such as why the retainers not depicted, but that is solely the artists' discretion. The way it looks, it wold seem easily disassembled and set up elsewhere. I may try to find it when I am next in Moscow.
-
I agree with you somewhat on that, Robert. Obviously the artist couldn't know too much about what happened the night they died or the sculpture would look very different; however, I still find it impressive as a sculpture and a work of art. I like the background.
-
Hello,
Sorry to interupt your conversation about the sculpture- (by the way, I think it's rather nice, thoguh it's odd that the IF's eyes are closed,) but I have a question about Faberge, and I've looked in the subject "Imperial Antiques" and didn't find a thread that the question could go on, so I'm asking it here.
What is a kovsh?
I've seen several pictures of what is labled "kovsh of so-and-so gem..." and I'm wondering what it is. I'd post a picture of one, but I don't know how.
If anyone knows what they are, please tell me! I've really been wondering. They look like some sort of dish...look for a picture of one somewhere, it's really mystifying what they would be used for.
Thank you!
Andrea
-
Re: Response #570 and "Kovsh": A "kovsh" did not originate with, nor is it exclusive to Faberge. It has a long history. Simply research via "Google." AP
-
Thank you! The only place I saw a kovsh was a Faberge book, so I thoguht it was Faberge.
I'll reserch it.
Andrea
-
Aparently, a kovsh is a Russian drinking vessel, though from the pictures I've seen, it doesn't look like one could drink from it. Nor does it look like a ladle, which was the other definition. It looks more like something one would ladle from, not use as a ladle.
To tell the truth, to me it looks like a gravy bowl shaped like a Viking ship!
Andrea
-
Without getting into a dissertation, I will add two remarks to your post # 573 : "Kovshi" (pl.) come in all sizes. I have even seen graduated "sets" of such. Also you should research about the transition of the original functional use into symbolic use of such engraved, jewel-bedecked, etc. kovshi as awards/rewards. AP
-
Oh. Interesting. I will do so. I never thought that kovshi could come in graduated sizes, like matroshkas. Still, the shape seems kind of odd to drink from, though a smaller kovsh would be a good ladle.
Andrea
-
The kovsh is ancient. It was originally used to dip from a communal bowl and then drink or sip from. It had long outlived it's original utilitarian purpose, however and became a presentation piece or special gift. The Romanovs and their courts gave especially valuable ones, many of which now are in museums.
When and Emperor, or and member of the Imperial Family visited a place they were often given one as well as the salver/plate for bread & salt. These were inscribed for the occasion.
By the 19th century when the great jewelry house got hold of them, [especially Faberge] they had become valuable works of art.
As far as I know, this is strictly a Russian tradition, although I could be mistaken there.
Just Go ogle it and you can find out more.

I hope to find a bigger and entire version of that picture.

Wasn't sure exactly where to put this one, so I figured I'd put it here to be safe... Anyway, has anyone seen the new Sherlock Holmes film? Rachel McAdam's character says something about a "missing Romanov princess" in her first few lines, but she must've been mumbling because I couldn't understand the first half of the sentence! I was hoping they would mention more of it, but they never did. :( Does anyone know what she said? I don't think it was important to the plot, but it would be interesting to know.
-
Katya, I want to see that movie SO BADLY! :D
I have a question...did OTMA have specific pieces of jewelry, like bracelets or rings, that they always wore? For example, I have a ring my mom gave me and wear it nearly every day because it's special to me. Did they have things like that, that they wore every day? Does anyone have photos?
Thanks! :)
-
Alexandra and OTMA all had gold bracelets they received as children for luck (i believe) if u do a search using "gold bracelets" u will be able to find some threads... in the end as their wrists grew they could no longer take the bracelets off which is why when Yurvorsky took their jewelry and put in a box for "safe keeping" he let them keep their bracelets! Other than that i don't know! sometimes if u play the game i call and sometimes play when bored "Spot the gold bracelet" you'll be able to find it (lest of course they're wearing long sleeves) :) ;)
-
Thank you RomanovHistoryBuff! I'll research it.
Another question (I've asked this before but haven't really found anything). Does anyone know of some specific piano pieces the girls played?

....! sometimes if u play the game i call and sometimes play when bored "Spot the gold bracelet" you'll be able to find it (lest of course they're wearing long sleeves) :) ;)
lol! I thought I was the only one who did that! However the big pair took them off when nursing, so it seems they could take them off.
-
Are there any photos of those bracelets? Meaning, modern-day, color photographs? Or are they lost?
-
Alexandra and OTMA all had gold bracelets they received as children for luck (i believe) if u do a search using "gold bracelets" u will be able to find some threads... :) ;)
From Anna V's Memories of the Russian Court - Each girl [OTMA] received on her twelfth birthday a slender gold bracelet which was afterwards always worn, day and night, "for good luck" So you're right about OTMA getting the necklaces for good luck.

Thanks, Jennifer!

Thanks Jennifer!
I want to see that Sherlock Holmes movie too. I'm reading the book!!
I think that Rachell is playing Irene Adler...
-
I watched the SHolmes Movie! Very gooooooooood ^^!!
I understood what she said!!!
When she was seeing Holmes' newspapers she said: The marriage between the Prince of Hapsburg and the Romanov Princess.
At least, it was that what I heard in the portuguese movie!

Thank you!!!! I'd thought she said something about "missing." It was bugging me that I didn't know, lol.

You're welcome Katya!! And that's it Irina!

Since it was deleted from the thread "Book Discussion -- Gogol's The Nose" (http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=4054.0) for being off-topic, I'll just put it out here, Romanov-style:
So cool that Its Highbornness the Nose, State Councillor, has its own thread! I read it, enjoyed it and became convinced that we need poster ranks from the Table of Ranks. So all Gogol and nasal lovers, please petition our Sovereign and Autocratic Forum Administrator for it!
P.S. As a reader's aid, here is the Table of Ranks with the appropriate titles and predicates and links to the military ranks and the Russian version: Wikipedia: Table of Ranks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Table_of_ranks)
Your obedient servant,
F. P. Bergov,
Provincial Secretary
-
Having reached 200 posts, I awarded myself rank 12 in the Table of Ranks, Губернский секретарь, Gubernskiy sekretar or Gubernial Secretary.
But I am still "just" adressed as Your Wellbornness. :-)

:D Congrats Roerik! Haha.

Thanks. If I, like Collegiate Assessor aka Major Kovalyov in Gogol's rank-obsessed short story "The Nose", should insist on using the military equivalent of my rank, I would now be Sub-Lieutenant (instead of Ensign). BTW Rank 12 is the lowest rank that also has corresponding court ranks, so you might also adress me as Камердинер (Chamber Valet), Мундшенк (Cup-Bearer), Тафельдекер (Table Layer) or Кондитер (Pastry Maker) to His Imperial Majesty! :-)
-
Gosh, turns out I'm already a Граф, Graf, Count. (Although going by the Table of Ranks I'm not yet even a (hereditary) noble!) If I lived in Imperial Russia I'd order myself a nine-spiked Russian heraldic comital crown from Fabergé:
Seriously, I wonder if any of the opulence-loving Russian nobles ever had any such coronets made, like the British peers?
-
or Кондитер (Pastry Maker) to His Imperial Majesty! :-)
LOL! Pastry maker.
I do like that crown, actually.

I've always found the high-spiked pearl-studded coronets not really to my liking. (Despite growing up by a stream that once supplied freshwater pearls to Their Royal Majesties the Queens of Denmark and Norway!) Perhaps it's because I'm a guy that I'm not really into pearls. I like the coronet of untitled nobles (in Russia and most of Central and Northern Europe) with trefoils much better:

For anyone interested in the various coronets of rank, take a look here: Wikipedia: Heraldic Crowns (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_(heraldry)). Lots of pictures!

This is directed to anyone...I'm not sure if this has been asked before but what kind of makeup did the Grand Duchesses and their mother Alix wear on a day-to-day basis? And on more formal occasions? Did they wear any at all? Was it similar to today's type of makeup or was it just powders and things like that?

Speaking of the need for make-up and/or retouching, whatever happened to OTMA here? OTM look like peasants who have been out in the sun all day and Anastasia looks like Rasputin's daughter, freshly arrived from Siberia!

I really like OTMA's dresses in that picture, all of that rich brocade and embroidery!
-
Good question, Fyodor Petrovich! I noticed too their maturing in that photo , and when I saw the photo for the first time, I was surprised by their outlook and expression. They indeed look bit older, could it be a consequence of war/possible stress or just simply development?
-

Lol! The girls love to sunbathe. Alexandra nocticed this and wondered to Nicholas in a letter, " where did they pick up that craze?" Also courtiers said OTMA liked to lay out in the sun "like lizards". Being suntanned as an adult is more noticeable than in a child. Because they are often suntanned as children during their vacations on the Standart. The small pair had grown so much since the war's beginning, they felt the need for these 1916 formals to be taken.
-

That's very interesting, considering how shielded they were from the mainstream social trends.

Really and when did sunbathing and being tanned become popular? They were indeed shielded...however they met other young women at the hospital and so were exposed to new ideas about things...and I believe Alexandra's letter and the courtier's remark came during the war years.

Interesting!!

I think being tanned didn't get popular until the early 1920s... I think Coco Chanel started that trend for women and Douglas Fairbanks Sr. for men.
And yes, that photo of OTMA is definitely my least favorite photo of them... Well, maybe they just had a day or something like that. The stress of the war-time did indeed slightly change their looks, but not THAT much.
-
OTMA liked to get sun bath! In Robert Massie's book says that Alexandra wrote a letter to Nicholas telling that the girls stayed for hours getting sun bath, and she didn't know from who they get this mania... Sth like that!
Anastasia's hair is so long there! ^^

Anyone know how you can tell photos of the IF on the Standart apart from photos taken on the Polar Star?
-
In response to Reply # 618: I believe "Tsar" Douglas has commented here on the differences several times, especially in regards to the spaces under the railings on deck. You might search for his comments, outside and inside the two vessels. He is usually "right on the money." AP
-
Thanks!
Also, in FOTR, chapter 12, about the murder, is called Gotterdammerung. What does this mean?
-
According to Wikipeida.
The term Götterdämmerung is occasionally used in English, referring to a disastrous conclusion of events.
-
In response to Reply # 620: Though you have left out the umlauts in the spelling, it is generally translated from the German as "Twilight of the Gods." AP
-
Similar concepts: Doomsday, armageddon, apocalypse and ragnarok, the latter the original Old Norse term (meaning Final Destiny of the Gods) for Wagner's Götterdämmerung.

Just a random question for all of you geniuses out there... I was going through my home movies from a cruise I took a few years ago, and these portraits caught my eye. They were hanging above an unnamed bar on the cruise ship... I've taken a screencap with the hopes that you all may know who they are. The man looks like Nicholas, but the woman is definitely not Alexandra. Could they perhaps be King George and Queen Mary, seeing as George and Nicky looked so similar? Or is it just a random juxtaposition of formal-looking portraits and no one realizes that they have the likeness of the last Tsar on their ship? Thanks for your help!

Re: Posting # 624: IMO, not HM George V.....the decorations are wrong: the color and placement of the ribband and star of St. Andrew are in the Russian fashion. I likewise feel that it is not George V in Russian uniform. I DO feel that it seems to be an ATTEMPT to depict Nicholas II, though IMO the lower facial features bear some covert resemblance to his paternal uncle, the GD Vladimir Alexandrovich - without the fuller "mutton-chop" whiskers. As to the female, I haven't an immediate reaction, other than she seems to be dressed (and hair done) in a much earlier fashion than the NII portrait. The same "misty," somewhat bland execution of the works could be by the same painter? But then again, it may be the angle of photography. Perhaps these were simply "decorators' items" (same size, matching frames, etc. to achieve "balance") to give the "unnamed" bar a bit of "classy" ambiance? Analagous to people now who purchase older unidentified portraits of seemingly well-off personages in order to have "instant ancestors" for their walls! I wish you good luck in finding your answer. Best regards, AP.
-
Re: Posting # 624: IMO, not HM George V.....the decorations are wrong: the color and placement of the ribband and star of St. Andrew are in the Russian fashion.
AP, it seems to me that the Order of St. Andrew and it's star - your favourite decoration;).
Anyway, this man (judging by his appearance, uniform and medals) is with no doubt Nicholas II, although at the first time he doesn't look like himself. And of course, again reversed picture.
-
Attention Nicola and Reply # 626: Ah, Nicola, I ALWAYS appreciate your humor! Yes, I have a tendenaccy to "grind" on the "Order of Saint Andrew, the First Called." People seem to eternally get it confused with the British Order of the Garter. The ribbands are of a diferent hue of blue and the stars are different. Again, the ribband of St. Andrew is worn over the RIGHT shoulder, thus THIS painting IS NOT reversed. Occasionally people will see a portrait of Nicholas II in BRITISH uniform with the Garter ribband over the LEFT shoulder (which is proper for the GARTER) and confuse the two. By the way, I DO think that this portrait about which we write here, IS the Emperor Nicholas II, if nothing else but for the frontal hair style. Good to hear from you again! Best regards, AP.

Anyone know how you can tell photos of the IF on the Standart apart from photos taken on the Polar Star?
You mean besides the difference in the deck railings?? Polar Star were open, often with a canvas cover, the Standart's were solid .

I found this amusing... in cleaning out some things around the house, my mom found an old Denny's kids menu that had a bunch of games on the back of it, centered around the cartoon movie Anastasia. One of them was something like "Unscramble the clues to discover the secret message and defeat Rasputin!" I'd already solved the "puzzle" years ago, and I saw my seven-year-old handwriting in the words "Long live the Romanov family." I just thought it was neat that I'd written that years ago and now I'm so fascinated with them...
-
Hey! bit off topic but i'm going to france next week and i need to know anything romanov related that happened there ie, people buried there, who lived there. i'm going to paris but it can be anywhere in france. eg i know that marie lived there after the revolution. it can be anything, like, you know, the IF once went there one wednesday afternoon- lol. just so when i get back to the good old UK i don't find out something and regret not knowing it then, just so i can know while i'm there- thanks!
-
Hehe, Katenka!
Lol, Katya!
Cool, TunaEars!! ^^ You can search in books or here in the forum and send pm's to people to know more about the Romanovs!!

Does anyone watch Warehouse 13 on the SciFi Channel? They had an episode about Rasputin on tonight!

Janet Suzman, who played Alix in Nicholas and Alexandra . I was about to say that's who the doll looks like as well.
-
i have got to just "put this out there romanov style" because i'm so mad about it. i was just randomly googling, as you do, and came across a website comparing the fox animation and the real romanovs. and now i'm REALLY annoyed. first thing to tick me off was there was a page for like every other member of the family excluding alix and alexei who got a tiny picture stuck in the corner of another odd page.
not only was so much info incorrect but it was just annoyingly worthy of killing someone.
firstly there was a whole long bit about how the romanovs went into hiding, followed by the biggest and most obvious go at olga i have ever seen. now don't get me wrong, i like all of the GD's equally really, i'm more of an alix fan, so i didn't think "olga abuse" would nag me so much, but it did, it went through the whole she was really snobby she didn't get on with anyone she was a major moody snob. followed by a whole thing on how tatiana was alixs favourite , i mean excuse me if i'm wrong but imo nicky and alix were equally devoted to there children. granted tatiana and alix got on very well due to there opposite tempraments but this does not mean favouratism, to really continue the rampage of ridicule there was a passage on how olga and tatiana didn''t get on a bit and always argued over who was prettier, alix would have killed them if that were true i mean COME ON! this website further suggested that N and A were "in on Rasputins murder", without puting it word for word, to make it sound me like they turned against him and therefore make it look like the fox film. i know this is a rant, and i know theres also threads discussing anti olga sites and the whole ludicrous T and O arguing thing, but i had to clear my mind and scream it at something. if you read this you must be really bored- lol. if anyones interested in seeing this website i'll url it, just ask, too angry to put it now. lol.

TunaEars , Olga always comes in for a slam from the cartoon centered web sites ...she was older and (gasp) she READ books! Horrors! ...they are trying to make the cartoon Anastasia into some sort of Cinderella with mean step sisters. Awful, like there isn't ENOUGH drama in the true story ?? As Olga is my favorite, I have avoided this cartoon...I have to think of my blood pressure!! LOL!
-
Tatiana was certainly not a mean step sister to Anastasia.

lol! i used to love the cartoon when i was younger but now it just sends me into an angry rampage- i was ranting about it to a friend in waterstones bookstore, and was so warapped up in ranting that i missed the two bottom steps on a flight of stairs and nearly broke my ankle- lol (but not at the time)
-
lol! i used to love the cartoon when i was younger but now it just sends me into an angry rampage
lol! That's interesting because I was going to add, but decided not to, that only good thing about the cartoon is it has brought many young people to the Romanovs...and I see that is true in your case as well! Well that's something.... for most movies history is a raw material to mold. It's amazing when a film gets it even half right. Those who made the cartoon had not the slightest interest in history or the real Romanovs. They squeezed the Romanovs into a certain mold. They need a mean, older sister, and Olga will do. As I say, I haven't seen it beyond the first 5-10 mins. But one does not have to see it to know the formula.
-
There are fan's websites that tell us things that they even don't know if it's true! Just ignore them and be happy XD

I really enjoyed that, Holly! What a great trip it must have been. Was it eerie to be there...did you feel anything there?
-
That is a very neat video. :) Did you recognize any places on the grounds from pictures of the Romanovs? It must have been very exciting! I wish I could go to Russia...I'm sure I will someday, but not in the near future.
One thing I don't understand- I've read in places that the palace is in bad condition, peeling paint etc. But in your film, it looks like it is in excellent condition. Was it fixed up recently, or something?

Yes, it's being renovated! They've repainted and started fixing up some of the rooms for the museum. It's looking really nice! I was fortunate to go right when they reopened it. There is a thread on it in the Alexander Palace board. :]

I'm so happy you liked it! I'm thinking about writing something. Maybe on my Tumblr I'll write some stuff about my trip. If anyone is interested in reading about my 2 month stay in Russia I would be happy to write on my Tumblr and post a link here!
I wouldn't say being there was eerie exactly. It was definitely the most amazing day of my life thus far. It sounds very corny to say but it was like a memory from a dream that you have for years and years. I MIGHT have cried very hard and ran deep into the grounds... But, I think some of you could understand. When you dream of doing something since you were eleven years old and then you're nineteen and finally doing it... it's a big deal to you. It almost didn't feel real at all. It was very familiar somehow. I could recognize the paths and the bridge to the playhouse. When I looked at the paths around the island I could see the black and white pictures of the children right in front of me. I sat on the bridge where it meets the ground like I remembered seeing Tatiana doing in a picture and I just sat there for a while. Then I took a path to to the field that you can see in the video. It was so beautiful and it smelled so good somehow. It was amazing and almost indescribable. I hope you all get a chance to experience it soon too.
-
Some say Alexandra haunts the palace, I wonder if they're all there. Too bad we can't sent Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt's character on Ghost Whisperer, and I hate CBS for cancelling this great show) over there to see.

YES!! I was hoping you'd write about your Russian adventures. I'd love to read them.
Holly, "indescribable" is the perfect word for the emotions one feels when finally standing in front of the Alexander Palace after waiting so many years to visit. :-)
-
oh, I hope someday I can go there too! It's my dream since I was 13!! Holly, it must have been unforgettable!! I'm happy for you.
-
Holly, I absolutely understand what you are saying about the place's familiarity and your emotions while there ...etc. that comes though in your video....and the viewer feels the same . The b/w photos we all know so well seem to spring to life looking at the same places and amazingly, the same "light" in real life. Perhaps it's the longitude...but the light is the same as in the b/w photos...but in glorious color! Just amazing. Please post your writings about your trip when you are ready.

I'm working on my writing now!
Here's a short video of the burial room of NAOTMAA.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqgTF_fB5nc
-
Re the kindly posted video of Reply #657: We also remember that their retainers are buried with them, there in St. Petersburg at the cathedral church of SS. Peter and Paul. On my last visit there, the little chapel was open and one could walk in, touch the tomb, or touch a personal icon to it. Some visitors were leaving tiny modern icons propped on the floor against the tomb, as well as simple flowers. The little chapel is now closed off by rope barriers at/near the two entrances to the room.
The small coffins are buried in stacks on "grilles", with the retainers being on the lowest stack, mimicking, in death as in life, proper rankings. The below-ground space has certainly more interior room which can accomodate the final two sets of remains, which are probably not expected anytime in the near future. It is interesting to note, that due to the fragmentation /decay of the bodies, (as well as the hurried execavation), many of the very smaller parts of the bodies are missing, as well as being mixed together. As the remaining portions of the bodies on top in the original grave pit decomposed, smaller digital, etc. parts dropped away and became mingled with the ones of the body/bodies below them. Thus, without total DNA examination of EVERY SINGLE fragment, it is more than possible that some of the retainers' minor remains are in the IF containers, and vice versa. But who REALLY cares? It is extremely fitting that they are together in death, as in life, both masters and servants. AP.

I loved your videos, Holly... I cried with the last one :'(
;)
Do you have more? I'd love to see, if you don't mind. I've never seen any videos showing the Palaces or the place they're buried

I know I have some of the Winter Palace and I think a very short one of Peterhof. I'll upload some stuff really soon for you. :)
I have a ton of pictures as well, but it would take forever to upload to photobucket. I only have them on my Facebook at the moment. I'll see if I can get the patience, haha.

Thank you Holly!! :D
You're so lucky... hope you had a good time there. How could you not?

Glad you liked it!
The first one is the Winter Palace. The next is Catherine.

Great videos, Holly. It must be so cool to walk were the Romanov's once walked, a hundred or so years ago.

Oh, thank you Holly; it's really beautiful you did a great job :D

TunaEars, that site you spoke of a couple of pages back is very old. I remember other members here talking about how silly it is.
And the animated movie Anastasia is beautiful. It's going on the legend on if Anastasia had survived, and yes a lot of things were changed for it. It introduced me to the Romanovs when I was younger and it is still one of my favorite movies. Besides, they don't say anything bad about the family at all. They show them all very close and loving like they were in real life. There was the one scene where Anastasia looks at a picture she made as a child and said something like "Olga said it looked like a pig riding a donkey, made me so mad!" (which any sibling could say!) giggles, and then says she misses them all. So there is my rant.
Aaanyway, I came here because I didn't know where else to post this, and I didn't know if it had been posted before. I was shown this site where someone blends modern pictures of Russia together with pictures taken in the same place during WWII. I thought some of you might like to see them.
For example there is this one (http://pics.livejournal.com/sergey_larenkov/pic/000413a0/), which I believe is the Peterhof Palace?
The rest are here. (http://sergey-larenkov.livejournal.com/)

Remarkable photos Duchess Georgiana ! Thanks for posting them
-
That is very interesting. Rather spooky.
-
Can anyone translate the titles?
-
I love it when i'm just doing what I do day to day and I come across a Romanov reference. It really makes me smile. Like this post from the IMDB Joan Crawford board which is totally tongue in cheek. It made me laugh.
There are obviously long periods of Crawford's life (pre 1925) for which there exists scant documentation. Crawford's tales of being snubbed by the "stuck up" girls at Stephens College were actually (according to the 50th Anniversary Edition of "Mommie Dearest" due out in 2028- reserve your copy today) a fabrication based on her own experiences after her narrow escape from Sarajevo in 1914. Crawford made her way to Petrograd and after a crash course in Russian (later useful in her unacknowledged career as a KGB colonel) secured employment in the Tsar's palace. After Alexei nearly bled to death from Crawford's version of "discipline mixed with love" and she refused to excuse Anastasia from the dinner table (for not eating her Steak Tatare) the 10 year old LeSueur was fired and joined a Bolshevik cell. She got her revenge a few years later in Siberia when Lucille LeSueur had the Romanovs prematurely shot (before a staged trial could be organized). LeSueur escaped punishment for this breech of party discipline (she was already sleeping with Lenin, Trotsky & Stalin) but she was ordered back to America to organize the Communist Party and engage in industrial espionage (with an emphasis on film technology and soft drink formulas).
-
WHAT!?! Joan Crawford (then Lucille LeSeur) was a maid for the Romanovs!? I don't get it...is it a joke, or something?
-
Yeah it's a joke.
Joan Crawford was born in 1905 (according to Wikipedia), making her only twelve when the revolution broke out in 1917. Bit young to be a maid.
As for her heroic escape from Sarajevo, in 1914, she was nine years old!
-
I still don't understand: did she even go to Russia? Nevertheless, it is hilarious! Shivbzik refusing to eat Steak Tartare! How silly. Wait, I just looked up steak tartare in the dictionary, and it is raw beef! No wonder Anastasia "refused to eat it". :P
-
Noooo, it's being totally sarcastic. They're just listing all these things that never possibly could have happened. Random references to the Romanovs just make my day and I had to 'put it out there.'
-
Hello :)
Just a thought, what happened to all of Nicholas' diaries that were stored in the garden of the Ipatiev house? I know that extracts are available on the main AP page. Does this mean they all survived?
Tom
-
Stored in the garden? Does that mean they were buried?
-
Tom, Nicholas' diaries are on the safe place, in Russian archives, GARF. (i believe that some of them were found in guards' houses) -- some of the complete diaries are published online in Russian.
-
Stored in the garden? Does that mean they were buried?
Oh no, I think they were stored in the outbuildings in the garden, they were in labelled trunks and crates.

I did some research and found out that Tsar Ivan VI of Russia lived to be 23 (Olga's age) and died on the 16 July. Also the the youngest son of Wilhelm II committed suicide almost exactly 11 years after the romanovs death 18 July 1929.
-
In the Lord of the Rings Pippin Took asked Gandalf if the Steward of Gondor was the king? Gandalf replied that in some countries the steward might eventually become king, but not in Gondor, even if 100 generations might pass. The line of kings in Gondor was immeasurably sacred.
Lol, I wonder if the arch-Catholic Tolkien had the arch-Protestant Dutch monarchy in mind: Guess what the Stewards of Gondor are called in the Dutch version? Stadhouders!
(Also very interesting that the German version goes all archaïc and calls them Truchsess. The term used in the French version, intendant, seems wrong to me: The point about the Stewardship was that it was hereditary, whereas intendant was one of the few titles that was not hereditary in ancien-régime France. Sénéchal would probably be more fitting.

Olga was 22 when she died. Her birthday was in November, so some people get it mixed up. What I do is just pretend she was born in 1896 unless I want to know how old she was at Christmas.
That's a wierd conicidence, by the way! I should know this, but...when did Tsar Ivan VI of Russia live?

He reigned from 28 October 1740 - 6 December 1741, and lived from 23 August 1740-16 July 1764
Thanks for pointing that out!! I had always thought that she lived to be 23.

I am shocked by the fact that no-one uses красный гриф(он), Krasniy Grif(on) or Red Griffin as their username, considering it is the main charge in the Romanov family arms (http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A0%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BE%D0%B2%D1%8B)!
BTW - OMG - do you know what the arms of Kashubia - home region of Franziska Schanzkowska, are? A griffin! Suremly that must hold enormous significance for her superstitious supporters... (BTW according to legend, the first Romanovs came from neighbouring Prussia, hence perhaps the typically Baltic-Pomeranian griffin in their arms.)

Re Reply #699: As we have discussed before, the subject of heraldry is rather "foreign" to most people. Examples: A crest is often referred to as a "coat of arms." Additionally, who would readily know location of the "dexter" side of a shield's depiction, or even care about such? (As for "bicephalous eagle", as you know, there are many representations of such, other than the Russian Imperial State Arms.) Regards, AP.
-
Re Reply #697: I feel certain that many, many people mistakenly believe the Great Imperial Stete Arms to be the FAMILY "Romanov' 's arms. Regards, AP.
Indeed, and who can blame them. It wasn't untill the 1850s that Alexander II, just like any pretentious bourgeois gentilhomme, ordered his Master Herold to design the Romanov arms, which he duly did, based on a 17th century banner of the first Romanov Tsar's cousin Nikita Ivanovich Romanov!
But I also find it odd that the username Двуглавый орёл, Dvuglavniy orel, Bicephalous Eagle hasn't been used!
And why no Ледяная Коронa, Ledyanaya Korona, Ice Crown, which is the image the Great Imperial Crown always has evoked in a северянин, severyanin, Northerner like me.
-
Re Reply # 699: As we have previously commented, the subject of heraldry is rather "foreign" to most people. Examples: Who can correctly locate the "dexter" side of a shield (follow closely by most peoples' reaction of "Who cares?") ? Also how many times have we seen the "crest proper" referred to as a "coat of arms"? As to the bicephalous eagle, I am most certain that you know (being the heraldry admirer that you are!) that it has been used in a large number of armorial depictions, in addition to Imperial (as well as modern, though THAT eagle is golden) Russia.
-
Re Reply # 699: As we have previously commented, the subject of heraldry is rather "foreign" to most people.
Indeed. I recently saw some Scandinavian heraldists bemoan how even the Royal Court of Sweden has no interest in heraldry, because they don't show the arms of the various members of the RF on their all-highest home page.
Examples: Who can correctly locate the "dexter" side of a shield (follow closely by most peoples' reaction of "Who cares?")?
Indeed. With that in mind I replied a little langued-gules-in-cheek in this point of mine (http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=15343.msg458980#msg458980) in a thread about Romanov wedding rings.
As to the bicephalous eagle, I am most certain that you know that it has been used in a large number of armorial depictions, in addition to Imperial (as well as modern!) Russia.
If it didn't stop the competing emperors, why should it stop us! :-)

I've just posted some more!

Holly, I believe most AP forum members would understand your emotions while at the Romanov tomb....and share them! I find the video of their 1998 interment incredibly moving as well...It's no wonder you were overwhelmed when actually there! Wow. Thank you for posting the story of your trip!

It was called Tarabar.
-
Wow, that's interesting. I didn't know that they used a secret language. Do you have more information about the language, Holly?
-
I've only seen it mentioned in one book that I can remember.
Maria, Anastasia and Alexei would use the coded language to write each other messages and exchange them secretly. It appears to me to just be a change in spellings and such.
Here's the only sample published so far:
"To Her Highness stupid Marie and Anostoie. Thanks for thesnakck I rekon well befightin. M. A. Alexei. 1914."

Who can decipher it? :-)
Tsar Nicholas II the Second, by the Grace of God, Emperor and Sjelfherrskare (?) over the whole of Russia, Tsar of Poland, Grand Duke of Finland, etc., etc., etc., hereby make reschedules (verlegt is difficult to decipher correctly, many meanings) to ...
-
Almost. It does appear in Gothic (blackletter) script for you guys too, right?
-
Response # 722 makes (in an attempted translation) reference to "verlegt," when the quote in # 721 is shown as "VETERLEGT". IMO, "verlegen" is a modern German infinitive (if one takes the spelling shown in #722 --as "verlegt" --as a potential conjugation of such). Regardless, it would appear to not be relevant to the "title proclamation/recitation," using this spelling. AP.
-
It's not in German. It's in a language spoken by some of NII's subjects, who wrote it in blackletter, although they were changing to antiqua during his reign. You can all see it in blackletter, right?
-
Hello, "F.P."! Yes, of course, I understand that it is NOT in German, with which I am familiar, and thus occasion my remarks. Simply the response attempt (#722) that the poster made, rendered (through a mis-reading, apparently of "verlegt" versus "veterlegt") a modern German spelling of a conjugation's parent infinitive, which gives no comprehensible meaning/addition to the "Title Proclamation." Apparently by utilizing/relying on a automated translator, that is why the poster had a problem resulting in a string of gibberish in meanings for that word.
As to "Black Letter," your remarks appear partially (on this computer) in "bold," not the so-called "Fraktur," if that is what you are asking.
Good to hear from you again! Best regards, AP.
-
As to "Black Letter," your remarks appear partially (on this computer) in "bold," not the so-called "Fraktur," if that is what you are asking.
Oh, that's too bad. I imagined the fonts we could use were universal. Does this appear in Old English blackletter? (Which I presume is a more common font than Schwabacher, which I used.)
-
Re Posting # 727: Unfortunately, no, not even in "bold" now. At least, not on my computer. Regards, AP.
-
Ah, OK. I tried to use another computer and then my first post didn't appear in Schwabacher blackletter. Apparantly it only works on my computer, unfortunately, since I have downloaded the font. But I could see the text in Old English blackletter, priobably because that's a more common font. (It's a standard option in Microsoft Word.)
The text was in Swedish (with archaïc spelling), means "Vi, Nicholas the Second, Emperor of All Russia, Tsar of Poland and Grand Prince to Finland, do make known that..." and I wanted to have it in blackletter, because that's how the imperial-grand ducal proclamations appeared in Finland right up to NII's reign, during which Finland started to exchange blackletter script (Fraktur aka "Gothic script") with antiqua aka Roman script.
But the Russian version appears in Cyrillic chancery style? and italics here, doesnt it?
-
Yes, the Cyrillic characters DO show (and in italics)! Regards, AP.

Also it was an occasion to use good british music instead of a simple maudlin melody...

I love it! And I agree about the music. I love the Radiohead.

I have a question...how can you tell the difference between some of these residences?
Is there any way to identify Peterhof besides the dark bricks? Will the oval shaped curtains work? Such as this (http://www.livadia.org/mashka/images/aotma1908_1.jpg)?
I also have trouble telling the Alexander Palace and Livadia parks apart. Did they both have spruce trees?
Was Peterhof the only palace where they allowed vines to grow up on the balconies?
Yeah, any little differences good for IDing, point them out please! Thanks! :D

I came across this site by accident while googleing around http://www.tsaarinikolai.com/ (http://www.tsaarinikolai.com/)
It's a memory association of the "Holy imperial martyrs Nicholas II and his family and the empress' lady in waiting Anna Taneeva in Finland"
The site is mainly in Russian though there are some parts in Finnish too. I don't know much Russian so I can't understand almost anything but it seems that there is quite a lot videos and articles about the IF in Russian and also some information about the associations activity in Finland. Apparently they share the information and keep their memory alive and also organize pilgrimages to places where the IF spent their holidays and where Anna Vyrubova lived and was buried.
Funny that I didn't know anything about this association though I'm from Finland. Maybe they should be a bit more active on "keeping the flame"...

Hmmm, good find there Hilla. I just spent a little bit of time browsing through and it didn't take me long to find a few pictures I had not seen before. Good stuff!

From a book* I'm reading right now.........
'Just prior to Nixon's 1972 visit to the Soviet Union, Seattle's Woodland Park Zoo acquired two rare snow leopards from Kirghizia. They were named Nicholas and Alexandra, after the last imperial family of Tsarist Russia.'
Does anyone know what happened to them?

I volunteer at a library and was shelving some books in Children's. I turned around to find this book on display. Anastasia's picture caught my eye, but is it a book about her? Nope. It takes place during the Civil War.

-
Why is Anastasia on the cover of a book that has nothing to do with her?
Don't you know Tim? She was a focal point figure during the American Civil War. Her father was President of the United States and forced to abdicate during the Confederate Revolution after they won the war, toppled his administration, and forced his family into western exile.
Of course as we are all aware the family was eventually executed on the order of Jefferson Davis...all except for Anna. She somehow survived and escaped abroad. Eventually settling in Russia in 1901 where, in attempt to conceal her past identity, she took the name 'Anastasia Romanov', married a prince, and became a Grand Duchess.
Hey, is it any less believable than most of her claimants?
-
Yeah, that makes about as much sense.
Maybe I'll stick Tatiana on a cover of a book I'll write about World War II..

Glad you liked ladies :-)
We are supposed to be "having fun" on the 'Having Fun' board after all, right?
All kidding aside. I'm glad to hear that the cover to the story was changed and Anastasia's picture removed...if that is indeed the case. It seems impossible though that such a mistake could have made its way past a publisher/editor, yes? You're telling me no one had the following Q&A exchange before this book hit the shelves...?
Q) Who is the real girl on the cover?
A) It's actually a picture of Anastasia Romanov. The famous Russian Grand Duchess who...
Q) Ummm, OK, well, does she have anything to do with the story?
A) Oh no, but I found her story historically fascinating so I thought it would be neat to have the main character in her image.
Q) Don't you think people are going to be upset and misled by that?
A) Well, no, I mean...maybe...I guess I never thought of that.
Q) Think maybe we should change it before the people start judging a book by its cover?
A) Yes, probably a good idea.
Or how about...
Q) Who is the real girl on the cover?
A) I'm not sure. It's just some picture of a cute girl from many years ago. Probably the Civil War era or sometime thereafter. Thought it worked well with the theme of the story.
Q) We'd better find out who it is and make sure A) it's no one famous, or B) it's no one's relative who is going to demand compensation.
A) Yes, probably a good idea.

Cool! Does it look like there are IF images on the reverse , unseen sides of those objects?
I'm not seeing separate views of Tatiana or Marie. And is that Anastasia on what may be a sugar bowl?
Conventional characterizations of the GDs would have Marie better suited to grace a source of sweetness.
-
I would think Olga ,Marie and Alix are on the other sides that are not shown . Why cool set! Thanks for posting

Interesting what if question here: If any of OTMA had married and become rulers of another country, who do you think would have made the best ruler?

Wow, Ally, that is incredible.
-
Yes, it is definitely one of the best art representations of the family that I have seen!

For years we've wondered who the child is that appears in two photos taken with the IF in Tobolsk:
1 (http://www.livadia.org/tanya/images/tatianabald.jpg)
2 (https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTUdO6rZsgTwlwt9_08L53CDCwAdOn8L6qCr5dHJU2JLZEUHJfk4w)
In "The Romanov Sisters" there was mention of a cleaning woman's son, named Tolya, who accompanied his mother to the house. Apparently OTMA loved when he visited. We can't know for sure if it's him, but I think it's cool we even have a guess.

Nice to finally have a name to go with this person.

Oh gosh I´d LOVE to have abox like this!

That looks great! I love your blog, by the way! Would you mind translating the back cover, though? I can't read Czech.

Same here Ally. Fantastic looking cover, but the language barrier is an obstacle for me as well.

Adorable Tatiana at an age of transition: not a little girl, but not teen yet either. Her age here?
-
She was 7, so still a little girl. but Tatiana always had something very serious and mature in her face, ever since she was a baby. I think that the photo in question captures it well - she is all innocence yet seems somehow melancholic.
The back cover translation is: "God Save the Tsar! That is what sounded from the crowd in summer 1914, but three years later the same crowd was cursing the Romanov dynasty with as much zest. Who were the people swept away by revolution from the throne, how did they face its rise and what led them to it in the first place? Follow in the footsteps of the family, who lost everything and for a long time was lost in the dust of oblivion themselves."

I just read a description of the flamboyant German designer (and royalty fan) Harald Glööckler as "teleshopping king and fashion czar" and suddenly I imagined that his style and behaviour probably is quite similar to Tsar Ferdinand of Bulgaria's!

From the Russo-French author Andreï Makine's reception speech in l'Académie française in 2016, about Peter the Great's visit to France and a sweet observation on adults speaking a second language encountering children speaking their first language:
