Believe me, you did a great job. I wish I could draw like that, but the only thing I'm good at drawing is water from a well. ::)

I attempted to draw the 1913 tercentary pic of Alix and OTMA, but unfortunately only Anastasia and Tatiana turned out well, so I scanned them, here they are:

This is going to sound a bit mean but there was already a Romanov fan art thread. Before this one. Why hasnt anyone bothered putting their pics on it instead?? :-\ ???
-
Because the other thread was many pages long, it was taking to long to load and so a sequel thread was made, this one, just like there have been many coloured picture threads because the individual threads become too long.
Thanks for your comments Emily and Lynn, your drawings are great too!

Alix with little Olga... originally I was going to put in Tatiana too, but I figured it would screw the balance up.
And Lisa that picture of Ella is AMAZING... you really captured her expression perfectly.

Just a quick drawing I did of TATIANA. I feel so bad as I was trying to finish the ribbon it went a bit out of bounds so that is why there is extra hair and the nose is hard to draw in crayon. Other then that I think I did an good job.
Aww she has kissable lips hee hee.

those are some great pictures!! :D

lmao thanks for the kind words ;D

Good job everyone!
Here is a drawing I did when I was competely drunk. I had to many vodka shots. Damn Sailormoon drinking game. Gah.
I find your comment of “being drunk” and telling of careless use of drinking games is unseemliness, please keep in mind while posting keep it “G” rated, please.

Actually dont want to fight but I have seen some posts that are not G rated. I have seen some that are like M rated. I would rate Obezyanka's as maybe PG-13. So what if they have mentioned being drunk and playing drinking games. I have seen worse posts. Maybe Obezyanka was drinking coca-cola vodka and getting hypo. LOL that happens to me.
Still love your silly pic Obezyanka.
-
I don't agree with you over the drunk issues and other things like that are private in my opinion and I KNOW it my actions to choose to read this topic, but telling people that your drunk makes you look rather stupid (no one not, so no worries) to some people. I too had (and have) a few wild times ;) ;) but I do not tell them over the internet, most of us here are the ages between 12- up and we must act mature over some issues and not to fight. ;)
And you right about "PG-13", and they're worse posts, I'll take the """G" Rated"" back, but want I said before that stays.
-
That is okay lol. I suppose they wrote it because they wanted to explain why the pic looks the way it does. LOL. I still think it is a classic.
-

I didn't think she meant it in a way of what you think mandie.
just a way of justifying why she drew it so 'badly' LOL (excuse slang)
i don't think there are young young children here.. as young as you think!
surley not under ten?
-
yeah that is what I ment to say hee hee. I love it. Iwonder if she will allow me to use it on my msn messenger. Those big eyes what a caricature.

Yes I agree she just explaining why she drew the picture like that. I do not think their are any children as young as 10 or 9 here either I saw 11 and older. I like the picture also nice !!!. I do not think it is something to make a big deal about. :) Its okay.

A moderator note...
I've been very busy lately, and haven't been able to get on here. It seems that some threads have gotten a little off-topic without moderation, and for that I apologize.
A note on the 'drunk' issue:
I realize that this is a "Having Fun" board, so people are allowed to be silly and whatnot. However, we need to respect and be sensitive to those around us. Regardless of the age range on this particular board, alcohol is really no laughing matter. There are many families who are broken apart because of alcohol abuse, and it's important to remember that there is a very ugly side to "being drunk". I truly believe it's important that we keep this in mind.
-
I agree with Laura.
And yes, I personally know young children who read these boards; like my 10 year old niece and her class. So you need to watch your step with what you post and keep it at least PG rated. This is a history forum. Not a place to tell you drunken charades and post pictures where it looks like someone is grabbing a woman's chest (like on another thread on this board). Alcohol isn't funny. Like Laura said, it ruins peoples lives. Believe me, I know this very well. Keep stuff like this in PMs please.

i remember your old dress :D
well done!

Sorry to spam my pictures of my doll. ;D
But I put her bow on top of her head and a bit to the side, and it reminded me of young OTMA's hair styles.
Here's a picture (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/ilovemydoll/Elisabeth/8%209%2007/8907_16.jpg), and here's another (http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j223/ilovemydoll/Elisabeth/8%209%2007/8907_17.jpg). Playing with the pictures made her hair turn out a bright color... :D
-
well done!
more please :D
-
Decided to do actual art this time! :D
Last night I started on a pixel piece, meaning on the computer I do a picture one dot at a time pretty much.
I chose to do Princess Elisabeth's little playhouse. It was hard because there aren't many pictures of the house, and what there is, the picture is really small. :D
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/HIHart/pixelplayhouse2.jpg)
Big version so you can see some detail maybe
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/HIHart/pixelplayhouse.png)
Smaller version

DID YOU MAKE THAT ON MS PAINT?!
its amazing :o
-
Something like it. Thankyou :)
-
it sure looks like that!
well done :D

all your pictures are amazing

Here's my latest!! I felt the urge to do a commemorative portrait since the findings of the remains was released!! Its Alexei and Anastasia (as I believe its her in the grave). It's the photo of them from 1916 during their trip to Mogilev. Enjoy!
Alexei and Anastasia:

-
That's amazing Keegan!
Not directly related to the Romanovs, but this is sort of relavent so I'll post it. It's a drawing of a girl (not Marie of Romania) in a gown I found an image of, I would opf drawn Marie wearing it but I'm hopeless at likenesses and I really wanted to draw it!
The real dress:

Hi,
I've made a couple of drawings of the Romanovs. Not knowing were to post them, I hope this is the place. This is the first time I'm using photobucket, so I'm not sure if everything will go ok.
(http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff127/Lyss-19/Romanov/th_Nicky.jpg) (http://i238.photobucket.com/albums/ff127/Lyss-19/Romanov/Nicky.jpg)
This one is of Nicholas as a baby.
-
Yiha, the first one worked. Thank you very much for your explanation about using thumbnails (in the "posting phoyographs" topic), Laura Mabee.
Here are two more:
Irina and her brothers (not yet finished, missing the faces):

Those are SO good.
By the way, there's an art work thread in this topic somewhere.
I hope to see more!
-
Wow Lyss, your drawings are so excellently done! I couldn't agree more with Natasya on that I hope to see more.
This here is the appropriate place to post your artistic things: http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php/topic,9469.0.html , it hasn't been posted on in awhile so it wasn't on the main page. Things like this usually exist, just got to look!

-
It realy gives me a pleasure to see that people like my drawings.
I looked for another thread to post them, but didn't find one. Thank you for the link you gave me NAOTMAA fan.
Gradduchess_42 is right, Forum Admin, if you're reading this, do you know how to switch the information to the other, already existing thread?
-
i'm sorry. i don't personally know. we could ask the moderator Laurramaybee i'm sure she will be happy to switch it.
-
Lol. It's "Laura Mabee" .. I'm not the user with two "r"'s ;) :D
And consider it merged.

Artist-historian George Stuart is a big fan of Tsarist Russia.
He has sculpted more than 30 Historical Figures(R) of the period through Stalin.
His website is up and you can get some idea of his Russian Figures at -

I made a digital painting of Tatiana.. based on a friend's sketches
Here (http://fc03.deviantart.com/fs29/f/2008/077/b/8/I_TA13___Tatiana_by_sparticus42.jpg)

That's great, Emily! I wish I could do digital paintings. I hope you make more sometime.
Sorry but I really don't understand these cartoon portrayals of Tatiana (or OMA). They look nothing like them and they have strange clothes. It has nothing to do with them and it looks stupid. Tatiana looks like a 30 year old business woman or something.
-

Now, now...let's be polite!

Oh Holly. I myself must admit I haven't much like for those cartoons, they're a bit too manga or anime or whatever it is for me, and Anastasia looks like a cat....o__o
Of course, they're well done and are visually appealing in that sense!
-
Now, now...let's be polite!
Haha...I know. Sorry but I really think they're silly. Well done like Keegan said, of course. But still...just my opinion. :D

thank you Holly... maybe i should do one of Anastasia? ;)
i agree with sarushka.. nice things.
but i think that they did it that was was to show their personal views on the girls if they lived today.
remember its art, and art can be anything.
-
I agree...I don't like that whole cartoon thing with OTMA either...
T.
-
Since I have the pleasure of working in an Art Gallery on the weekends, I've come to the conclusion that art can be appreciated in various ways.
However, there is a line of voicing ones opinion on the pieces and being rude.
Let's try to keep it within the line of maturity ;)
-
Yes, I understand art and that it can be viewed in different aspects. I was just stating my opinion on the cartoons.
Emily, please please please do one of Anastasia!! I was going to try to make one of her but I gave up. I don't really get how someone goes about making one. It looks hard. :D
-

Stating your opinion is fine, but try to use constructive criticism instead of just insulting.
-
The appealing aspects of art, I suppose, are in the eye of the beholder...I mean sometimes I like to sit down and just draw cartoon-ish OTMA drawings myself.
Par example:

So, I've been wanting a small tattoo dedited to the IF. I want to have NAOTMAA on it for sure. I also love Tatiana's quote "God will surely help us, and we will meet again in better times.", and I'm thinking of having that in Russian, but I'd need a correct translation of that.
I think there should be a small picture between the words, so I'm wondering if it should be a crown or a heart...I'm not sure.

That seems to be a great idea ! Where would you get it on you ? If you get it, take it in picture :)
-
Thanks. Well, I always say that I will get tattoos where I can see them when I want to (so, no where on my back!). Maybe on my left foot or on one of my arms, not sure where exactly!
-
i think its nice you think of the IF but to get a tattoo isnt that a little to much? its there your whole life and even if you have laser surgery you still see it sorry i dont wanna offend you.
-
It will be quite all right! Don't worry about that. =)
-

8) Those are cute drawings! How about adding colors?
-
Thanks Denise, Ally, and Proud_Olga for your so flattering comments! O my guh! Thank you sooo much.
Denise, yours are great works, too.
My drawings look like cartoons, too, ha.
I have a drawing of Nastya but she looks like a boy there (I'd show it here in a few days).
P.S. Their faces are so intricate I can't draw them well, likewise the bodies.
You're welcome dear :D
Keep on in it, you're good!

And Kristiane_KJD, welcome to the forum! I hope yo enjoy it :)

I don't know if this counts as Romanov art but it's something I'm working on... :)
-
What program are you using to build that?! : D
-
It's called Instant Home Design... :)
-
I think you're gonna construct a palace (?) Well, it's a very nice work, Tatia.
-
The Alexander Palace,yes...
-
It's called Instant Home Design... :)
Well it's looking great so far, keep it up and keep us updated!
-
Yes, it's a difficult work, Tatia! You're so talented!
I hope it will not cause you so much trouble.
God Bless (",)
-
Thanks...the program also lets me furnish the inside... ;)

Whew!
Today I drew two pictures (so far. I hope to do more!)
First was the picture in my signature (and icon).
Is anyone familiar with the graffiti application on Facebook? This is what this next picture was done on:
I drew it looking off the black and white formal picture. :]

That's really beautiful! And your banner is so sweet!

Yes. I can´t wait to see Anastasia´s one...
-
Me too.....I was good once in drawing but haven't try to do OTMA...... Now i have alot of free time i will try.....Ally do you draw? :)
-
Oh no... I cannot draw. That´s why I began colouring photos :) But I´m trying to convince my mother to draw Maria for me :)
-
Haha i understand.... I would actually love to see that drawing.....
-
Oh please, these are my first attempts of my "Feel-like-Mashka" drawings. I made these with crayons and pastels for approximately 5 hours (the first one) and 3 hours (for the second one). Due to those reasons, they look too awful.
Don't tease me.

I presume that the head adornment is supposed to be a diamond "Russian Fringe" tiara? IMO, you really need to consider the re-positioning of it much more forward. However, if it satisfies your instructor........... AP

Canuck! That's so beautiful! Impressive!
So ugly drawing

I'm glad that you like it! :D
Including the cameras was a good idea, right?

I thought it was pretty clever : D
-
Ladytaska, you definatly have a knack for art. I'm envious...
I need to get a flickr or something.
-
(http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa98/HIHart/mariadrawing.jpg)
For some reason I can only draw Maria in this style! The others always turn out bad. This one is alright, but I think her head is too small for her body.
-
I say it's very beautiful...
-
The proportions are not exactly right, but it´s still a great picture! :)
-
Well i don't drew perfect people i'm better in landscapes...think to start drawing again

How did that happen? It's so perfect, I had to look again to see if it was a photograph!

I'm not trying to be nice, I'm being truthful. It's beautiful.
-
Well, I thank you very much :)

Wow! GREAT job!

I really like your rendition of Tatiana :D

Please keep in mind I´m total amateur and this is my first try ever...

Ally - FIRST TRY???
Of course I recognize her, and I must say, you drew her so perfect, that I couldn't confuse her with someone else...;)
Very beautiful portrait!!! Great job!!!:)
-
Yes, it really is first try.... Took me three hours to do.... Still not really what I wanted....
Thank you most ardently for your kind words Aglaya, I apreaciate them so much!
-
Oh my -- it is amazing, had I scanner, I would upload some of my works too. I hope that it will be solved soon.

WOW WOW WOW!!!...Ally, it's wonderful!!! :)

Are you doing requets?
-
Sure, as long the photo is larger then 400x400 - 600x600 and good quaity.
-
also in black and white.
-
I'm also drawing and the only good thing i have made was a portrait of my mother from a picture.... but the pic was small....
So if i have request my picture should be huge?
-
I mostly do portraits, like the ones above, it be the size of those two portraits. It can be bigger, basically any size you want.
For your picture anything bigger then 400x400
-
Ally it's quite good for a person who said you don't draw good
Mandie you draw sooo good
My scanner again is not working but the paper which i used is QUITE big not A4 ...This was done by me for my mother's last birthday she put it in frame and liked it very much.... so since my scanner again broke down i took photo of my drawing....
My mother (i looked up from a photo of her in 1988 in Sozopol not good at all)

-
Oh yes. Happened to me too not so long ago...
beautiful work indeed!
-
I must agree that artwork is amazing, Elly and Mandie, I should upload some photos, as soon as I get scanner, or I could also scan somewhere else. I got a book about detailed portrait drawing, and I am about to learn more from that book.
-
Thank you both...i also decided to give some try of royal one... I wish myself luck
-
Wow, Elizie! That's perfect! You are a very great artist, don't you know it?
-
Hah thank you Shammy
Something i drew before 2 days
Edwardian Lady... (Don't ask me why there is cutted place i don't know because of my stupid scanner)

And something which i don't like
Roses(i believe i must put watercolour on them)
(http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac333/Ioanna_Of_Bulgaria/th_2456.jpg) (http://i913.photobucket.com/albums/ac333/Ioanna_Of_Bulgaria/2456.jpg)
-
Splendid - about watercolors, beware - I tried, and it is not my style -- technique is very hard to me, considering that paper I use is not appropriate for that.
-
Fantastic works Elly!, about the roses I have to agree with nena, once I tried myself too with watercolors but, on the contrary of what one can think, it's not very easy to use watercolors, your drawing it's already perfect, you don't need watercolors on it.
-
Oh, Elizie ! Those are so wonderful and definitely masterpieces! If you like to watercolor the roses, you can! I'm sure they will turn out so well ;-)

Grand Duchess Alexandra Nikolaevna (1825-1844). It's based on Ivan Winberg's portrait.
-
Beautiful and mesmerizing. Well done! You could make big money doing this for a living.
-
Thank you! Here's Tatiana Nikolaevna while I'm at it--hopefully I'll finish Maria and Anastasia someday soon...

You've got a natural talent that could take you places, I'm telling you. You're not an adult yet, are you? if you're still young, make a career out of your drawings. You might be the next Norman Rockwell (I'm obviously a major fan of your work).

Norman Rockwell... that's quite a compliment. It's nice to have a major fan! ;) I'm actually twenty-five, and sketching is just something I do for fun; I've never done anything serious with it.

(pay no attention to that lady on the right, please!):
Anna Vyrubova fantasizing about Nicholas? A major fan of the Romanovs? You did put hearts and "lurve" near her. Don't blame me for paying attention to the lady. Blame Pandora.

These are some sketches I did for my Fashion Illustration class.

I usually try hiding the legs behind gowns but the instructor has been on my case about it :-[ I did it her way and I hated the results. Same problems with the hands. Just can't seem to get the hands and feet right...
I really want to sketch the court dresses...I'm hoping my instructor will allow me to do some Victorian/Edwardian fashions for our next project *fingers crossed*

hahaha, no, it's not Anna:) I was just sketching along some characters, and it happened that the lady was put near N and A, just like that. I first, I wanted to cut her out, but I thought she's kinda funny, so she stayed:) but she has nothing in common with the Romanovs, I think...
-
Before this continues to even greater lengths, I just have to say something. This thread is for art by Romanov fans of Romanovs; the fact the art is by Romanov fans implies its content is Romanov related. As greatly skilled as you may be, many of the recent sketches and other drawings being posted here have nothing to do with Romanovs. At all. If you are indeed hoping to display your talents and get feedback, I would propose making a DeviantArt account. In the mean time can we keep the images strictly to NOATMAA and their Russian relatives?
-
Well, I tried sketching Irina...totally failed. :-[
(http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a388/ashanti01/hpqscan0002.jpg)
I struggled greatly with her mouth and jaw...I'll keep practicing.

Very nice AshantiO1! I can recognize Irina very well!
For newbies: I did a lot of drawings some time ago... And I wanted to share them with you, for people who still not saw them...

VERY nice Lisa!!
Did you use pastels? Color pencils?
I think my favorite is the colored portrait of Nicholas.
I think you did a fantastic job. And thank you for the compliment. I'm currently retrying the sketch. Fingers Crossed for better results.
-
Oh Lisa! Those are so beautiful!! :o My favourite is the one of Irene.
Great work everyone else! Your artwork is so pretty, and even though you say it's bad, I could not do any better. Keep up!
-
My heart just stopped beating..... AMAZING!!!!!
-
Lisa, MY GODNESS, you are great!!!
I'm speechless!!!!!!!!!!!
It's fantastic! My faves are the ones of Alice and Victoria, GORGEOUS! You should show those to some galleries or anything like that...!
-
OMG, I am simply amazed, it it outstanding, marvellous, splendid! But I remember seeing the 2nd one of Heir, while still being a newbie here, sometime in late 2006. I did one drawing of Alexei in uniform as well, and since I don't have a scanner, I will have to upload photographed drawing, it is only remaining solution I am aware of.
-
I use pastels... and I take commissions... ;)
-
Which kind of? Dry pastels or? Sincre I have one package, and just once I tried to do portrait, I am to try again. Sorry if I am off - topic.
-
Dry pastels... :)
-
Ashanti01, it does look like Irena! Take heart, no one here will seriously judge you : D I'd also like to apologize for my somewhat sharp words right after your previous post, I hope you didn't think it was directly aimed at you.
And Lisa...you always have produced the most exquisite pieces. I was thrilled to see several new ones (to me at least).
I can't help myself, but if anyone is interested, you should check out the "featured artist" on Laura Mabee's website: http://www.frozentears.org/Pages/Artist.html (you should also follow the link provided on the page!). Lisa herself was once the featured artist on the site.
-
No need to apologize, I didn't take it personal. ;)

For some reason Irina is proving to be very challenging for me. This is suppose to be Irina, but I think it kinda looks like Olga :-\

November of 1915, after receiving the Order of St. George. I ought to get that scanner. ;-) As an aritst, it is very important for me to know if I got similarity with him. :-[ Well done, I am amazed, Lisa and Keegan.

Alexandra "Adini" Nikolaevna again, based on a portrait by Vladimir Hau.
-
Did you use pen and watercolor? I think the effect was very nice. Good work ;)
-
Nope, just a plain old Number 2 pencil :) I'm glad you like it; this one took awhile with all the detail on her gown.
-
Well I think you did a good job. I too tend to use plain old #2. ;)
-
Your Irinas in particular are also quite good.
-
I usually don't try to sketch familiar people, I do much better ( i believe) when I do it free style, just sketching whatever pops into mind. For some reason Irina is very difficult for me. But thanks for the encouraging words, I will probably be retrying to sketch her when I'm in class tomorrow night.
-
Well I didn't work on Irina, instead I shifted my attention to other royals.
I tried to sketch Victoria Melita from an picture I saw on the Hessen archives. I think it turned out better than Irina. I'm still not completely satisfied but it's a start.
-
That's really good! I love the eyes!
but many I suggest on one thing? is the make the lips a tiny bit wider. you want the corner of the lips to line up with the pupils of the eyes.
-
Thanks Mandie. I'll work on making the lips wider.
-
That's great Ashanti! The eyes really do stand out... :)

I'm trying to make it look like an ikon, I'll update when actual progress has been made : D
-
Oh wow, Keegan. Are those modeled on the 1916 portraits?
-
Very good, especially Tatiana :)
-
I've already told you this a while back but they are amazing.
(And I sort of helped a little bit, right? :D)
-
Oh wow, Keegan. Are those modeled on the 1916 portraits?
They are, and they aren't : D All of the faces are actually based off of their 1914/ 1913 portraits. I did however use the hairstyles from the 1916 ones, with the exception of Anastasia of course. Their hair is meant to be about as short is it would have been at the time of their executions. Since the time I took these photos I've actually given Anastasia's hair some remodeling and it looks far better and more natural.
Very good, especially Tatiana :)
Thank you terribly! It's funny though, because I actually like Tatiana the best myself. With Anastasia in a close second ; )
I've already told you this a while back but they are amazing.

I know just how you feel about them :} And heck yes you did, if it weren't for you this whole piece would have taken a far different, more graphic path D: If anything, this piece is a joint effort between two counteractive forces. I thank you, most ardently.
-
NAOTMAA Fan , those drawings are remarkable.
You really caught the eyes and I think that's the hardest part of any portrait !

Amazing work, friend. Just keep on it! I like Anastasia, the way you got her shape. It is incredible.
But if you intend on doing icons, I must give you some advices, may I --- icons must not have 3rd dimension, the feeling of existing the 3rd dimension, SO, no traces of shadows, and not the black colour at all. Golden, Blue and Red color would be wanted. And usually no profiles, so the frontal position of faces, but My Gosh...I understand. These are some rules about drawing icons, in Orthodoxy. So, don't get this bad! *:-o*
-

Your kind words are duly appreciated : D You wouldn't believe how many times I had to erase the eyes on all of them, I also feel they're one of the most important and difficult aspects of a portrait. I'm thrilled you feel I was successful in achieving them though : )

Thank you very much Nena! And no worries, your advice is more than welcome. I'm actually trying to give this portrait an icon "feel" more than an actual depiction of one, mostly because of the limitations and rules you provided. It will be more portrait than icon, with the halos (being each a different traditional colour and surrounded by gold) being the only really religious aspect. Anyways I hope it meets your approval when it's finished! : )

You do indeed -- very stylized!
-
Thank you very much, Grand Duchess Jennifer and Sarushka! I'm glad you like it. :)
-
All I can say is "hola mola that's good!"
-
Thanks. I have yet to attempt Anastasia, but thus far, Maria was the most difficult to draw. I think it was her "saucers" that gave me trouble.
-
I love the way you do these! This may sound strange, but I especially like the hair, something about the way you conveyed the highlights : D
-
it's great Lulu! I wish I could draw...

This is something a bit different. It's a ceramic tile. I rolled out the clay into a small rectangle and using a pin,
made a drawing of Nicholas, Alexi and Tatiana from the 1916 series of photos. Once the image was made,
the tile is set aside so the clay can thoroughly dry. Then the tile is painted with different glazes to add the colour
and finally it's fired at 2000 decrees.
-
I am amazed, I adore the combination of colors and how it turned out. Well done!
-
truly amazing! And considering the material - even more amazing!
-
Thank you, nena and Ally! Actually wet clay is easier in a way.
If a line doesn't go right, it's simpler to wipe it away and start over,
than to have to erase it on paper!
-
BlessOTMA, great work. Your would be laughing, but your work looks like an a impressionist painting and reminds me an abstract works of a Kandinsky and Whistler, early Malevich or even some elements of impressionism of a great Van Gogh.
Well done.
-
Thank you Nicola, you are most kind!
-
What a creative and different idea, BlessOTMA! The colour choice is amazing!

Here's my latest!! I felt the urge to do a commemorative portrait since the findings of the remains was released!! Its Alexei and Anastasia (as I believe its her in the grave). It's the photo of them from 1916 during their trip to Mogilev. Enjoy!

On the contrary, I did it using pencil : D All of my work is done that way, as I happen to be a pretty lousy painter.

Abbigail, I'm flattered you thought Keegan's drawing was mine! :) It was a natural mistake, I should have made it more clear I was asking someone else how they did it!

Well, I know this isn't the Romanovs, but my friend Abbey and I came up with a story about the Hapsburgs. This is what happened (anime Sissi?!?): http://picasaweb.google.com/pantherscientist/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCJ3b8aOCspWZKQ&pli=1&gsessionid=kgk-s-r8aT8vPbtwte3WWA#5422352895159843938 (http://picasaweb.google.com/pantherscientist/DropBox?authkey=Gv1sRgCJ3b8aOCspWZKQ&pli=1&gsessionid=kgk-s-r8aT8vPbtwte3WWA#5422352895159843938)

Tatiana and Maria...the quality is horrible, it looked wya better before I scanned it
http://soleit.deviantart.com/art/Tatiana-and-Maria-Nikolaevna-149092742

I have a poem for Romanov artists everywhere.
For everyone who has picked up a brush , made a video or colored a photo.
Only art can
assuage my grief
not time,nor tide,
nor once held belief
only art can
open wide
and take me
where you
now abide
only art can
ease the heart.
and smooth
my way
...only art
-
Now that is amazing, and how much truth inside the poem IS! Marvelous!
-
Wow, that's great! I think that expresses how many of us feel.
-
Wonderful poem!
-
That's a lovely poem. It's very true.
Hehe, Ekaterina...I like your Sissi drawing.
-
It's my bff Abbey's. I couldn't possibly take credit for it. She's good at anime cartoons and stuff like that, so when I told her about the story, she had to draw it. I'll tell her you liked it next time I talk to her.
-
She's very good at it! :)

Alexandra Nikolaevna. Thanks to Svetabel for the original portrait (original artist is unknown).

Those are beautiful, Dru! I love them! There's something very interesting about them, almost like cutouts or collage-type things. What did you draw them with?
-
Thank you, Abbigail! I drew them with a plain old #2 pencil; nothing special.
-
So beautiful, Dru!
-
Thanks, Tasia. :)

Portrait of Maria Nikolaevna in 1906 (Peterhof) made by me some time ago:
-
Wow! That's a great interpretation. The shading is really well done!
-
I love the eyes, excellent work! Have you done any more?
-
No I haven't done another one yet. I spent quite days doing this and now I don't have time =)
-
Great work Dru and otmaprivatealbums! It's true about art and time! I tell people there is regular time and there is art time. I'll think 20 mins has passed , but the clock says, no indeed, it's been 3 hours! otmaprivatealbums, I hope you find both types of time again soon!
-
Very goooooooood!
-
A pretty quick one of Maria Nikolaevna in 1901. It isn't very well. I think the features are a little bit disproportionate.

Three months in the making! I'm so grateful it turned out this well, It HAD to be my best...for them.
It has been a powerful experience bringing the Big Pair back into being, even if it is only on canvas with paint
I'm also grateful to everyone on AP form for their generosity with thier knowledge, their love of the Romanovs and general good humor!
I have another photo bucket album for those interested in the process
and what goes into creating such art work . It has been like mountain climbing!
I'm a tile maker who decided to paint the Big Pair. It wasn't pretty for some time! lol!
but if you keep working, you'll get there

It's remarkable, you've created such an exquisite piece! I can't tell you how much I admire it, especially as it's a painting. Bravo! : D

I-TsarevichAlexei13 remarkable work ! I find line drawing harder than painting,
because you can't make mistakes! I made many! Glad everyone enjoyed the
painting of the Big Pair. It was a joy to do.

You're too kind, really : D I feel I quite understand just what you mean, you work and slave aimlessly trying to aspire to something, and suddenly the way you've shaded or a stroke of paint catches your attention, and your vision begins to take shape! I just looked at the series of WIP's in the photobucket album, truly a labour of love! You have my respect : D
And where on earth did this plethora of talent suddenly explode from?! Great work, EVERYone!
-
Yay, blessOTMA!! It looks so GREAT!!!!!

Exactly. An important part of art is knowing when you have caught something and STOPPING....Tatiana's final face just appeared as I was painting! How? Lord knows...but I knew to stop painting when it did. lol! I just looked at the series of WIP's in the photobucket album, truly a labour of love! You have my respect : D
Thank you. I have done ceramics for 40 years and it greatly helped over the three months of working that I didn't think of myself as a painter. Because my ego identification wasn't in paint...making so many mistakes wasn't as frustrating as it could well have been. If this struggle was in clay, I don't think I could have finished it. But it was in paint and I really didn't expect it to go well right off...I didn't know what to expect and I enjoyed that a great deal. Art was new again. I kept a photo record in part because it was so new. I'm explaining this at length and posted the WIP album to encourage people to just keep working! Also to expose the myth that art just "happens" and if it doesn't ,something is "wrong".LOL! No. Art goes though a gestation period and is messily born like everything else. So go at it! But yes,the painting was indeed a labor of love...the girls just HAD to have my very best. It's a joy to share it with others on the AP form!
-
Yay, blessOTMA!! It looks so GREAT!!!!!:D
Thank you abbigail ! Hope you get back to full computer speed soon! You have been missed!

Thank you very much Shawn for your kind words...emotion is indeed the drive behind the painting. I cannot spare them the cellar...but I can make sure, to the best of my ability, they are SEEN and treasured. Bringing vibrant colour to the black and white image is part of that .Art is not photography. Rather than capturing one image in time, art incorporates many images within what seems to be one. Also the viewer has a vital role in art. Really the last image is in the viewers mind, not on the canvas. What art does is spark the creation of that image.
I wanted to post this you tube video on this thread and say this gentleman's 2 videos helped me a great deal in this project and others may find the videos useful too. You see he gets down the dark and the light first and begins by sketching in the features...one can make corrections, I did, many!...but you need something down on the canvas to correct. I found other you tube instructions really come ons to buy their DVD lol! ...this guy teaches one something .

I just found a little watercolor I did of Tatiana quite a long time ago (it's stylized, though) and here it is!

Kind of loosely based on her looks.

nice abbigail !

Very good Abbigail!
The words in the left side means Tatiana Nikolaevna Romanova??!!!
-
Great watercolor, abbigail! You really have an eye for proportions and the way you used the colors is fantastic. :-) I take part in a drawing course every thursday and as soon as I have time, I try my luck. ;-)
-
Thanks everyone! Yes, you're right OTMAAfan, that's what it originally said but I cropped it out. On the right is something saying it's to my sister. I made it for her. She liked it!
Can't wait to see your drawing, Dust_of_History! Who do you think you'll draw?
-
Talented work, everyone!
If somebody longs to draw something Imperial and OTMAA-related, but aren't very good at drawing people (I am not good at drawing at all!), I think OTMAA's coats of arms could be wonderful themes for drawings:
Olga's arms (http://www.heraldicum.ru/russia/family/family6.gif)
Tatiana's arms (http://www.heraldicum.ru/russia/family/family3.gif)
Maria's arms (http://www.heraldicum.ru/russia/family/family4.gif)
If you want an easier version, their small arms are just the shield with the crown on top and the order surrounding it, without the mantle/coat/tent and the "supporters" (the two warriors).
Alexei's arms (http://www.heraldicum.ru/russia/family/family9.gif)
(Close-up of the Emperor's Great Arms for a better view of the smaller shields, which are clickable! (http://www.gerb.bel.ru/pages/russia/imperia_big.htm))
I don't know if Anastasia had arms, perhaps she was too young when these arms were granted in 1911. Alexei, although younger, but the Tsesarevich, was granted arms a few months before his birth!
When drawing heraldry, it's OK to draw your own version of the figures, as long as it e.g. clearly is a black, crowned two-headed eagle with heads facing away from each other and holding a scepter in the left claw and an orb in the right etc.
-
They are very intricate aren't they.
-
Can't wait to see your drawing, Dust_of_History! Who do you think you'll draw?
I haven't decided yet. I think I'll draw a portrait of Olga but I still need some practice. ;-) I prefer drawing only with a pencil. I'm not very good at using colors.
@ Fyodor Petrovich
Great idea but even the arms would be a challenge for me. ^^
-
That's a great idea, Fyodor Petrovich...it sounds very complicated!
Dust_of_History...yeah, I prefer just a pencil myself. Do you ever use charcoal pencils? I love those.
-
Yes charcoal pencils are fantastic. If you use them correctly, you can draw stunning realistic looking pictures. But you have to know where to draw shadow and light to achieve a realistic look. Using charcaol pencils is the supreme discipline and your hands are black afterwards. :-)
-
I have a small collection of Derwents and they are pretty expensive. I also like watercolor pencils. Does anyone use water color pencils?
-
Ooh, I used watercolor pencils to color in a pic of Maria Nikolaevna (here: http://soleit.deviantart.com/art/Maria-Romanov-110533345). They're so cool. A little hard for me to use though.
-
I try to use it lightly so then I can use my brush to work out the colors.
-
Wow, the picture is awesome abbigail. I haven't used watercolor pencils yet and I think it's not that easy to use them. This is my first try using charcoal pencils: http://i490.photobucket.com/albums/rr264/Dust_of_History/Scannen0001.jpg
-
Dust of history, your eyes are magnificent.
-
Those are great! They look very realistic and I like your style!
-
Thanks! It was really hard to draw the eyes, because charcoal pencils don't forgive any mistakes.
-
@ Fyodor Petrovich
Great idea but even the arms would be a challenge for me. ^^
Oh, you are too modest! If you can draw such eyes....
The great thing about heraldry is that it's only two-dimensional. (The arms themselves always are. Though "trappings" such as the mantle are sometimes rendered three-dimensional). So you don't need to worry about shading, perspective and such!
-
Thanks everyone! Yes, you're right OTMAAfan, that's what it originally said but I cropped it out. On the right is something saying it's to my sister. I made it for her. She liked it!

Thanks Fyodor Petrovich. :-)
Yes, it's great that heraldy is two-dimensional, because I have often problems with shading. I think the difficulty lies in the details and the colors. The arms are full of details which are quite hard to draw but with some patience it's feasable.

Alexander Ivanovich Butakov
Didn't know where else to put it.
-
Oh abbigail, this is very beautiful. Thank you! But Butakov here looks rather unrecognizable;).
-
Ah, I thought it wasn't too good. You are right
-
Ah, I thought it wasn't too good. You are right
I think it does look like him...if he went on a diet! Seems he was quite a stocky fellow. You caught his eyes. This is almost a soul portrait of Alexander Ivanovich. I'm glad he and his wife had at least 7 years together...so many couples had no time then
-
Really? He didn't strike me as especially stocky, but then again it's just his face. Was he, in real life?
Very true :( and 7 years isn't even all that much anyway.
-
in the 1907 photo with his wife on thier wedding day, he's not stocky...but in later photos( 1912 etc) when convorting
with the IF , he's bigger.
-
Is it even proper to post this here? It's a video about my Big Pair painting that I posted here a few weeks ago.
It came out pretty well and I believe other Romanov artists should think about incorporating their art pieces along with
the reference photos they are based on in a video...particularly if you have been doing for awhile...it would make a nice presentation

Cool, Abbigail!!
But who's Alexander Ivanovich Butakov? o-o
I know he was close to the IF like you said o-o.

Tasia, firstly Happy Birthday! Wish you to be always endlessly energetic and slightly ubiquitous here, as you are now;). Secondly, here is the link about Mr Alexander Ivanovich Butakov. http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=14270.0

I would say the most important part is staying with the reference photo and keep looking at it.
It never stops revealing itself as you paint and look. I found something new nearly every session

How did you decide on the hair colour, given that the photographs of that era are all black and white?
Ann
-
How did you decide on the hair colour, given that the photographs of that era are all black and white?
Ann
She most likely got the color from first source descriptions of OTMA.
-
Ann you are psychic...actually I was about to post that Marie's hair looks more red in the photo than in the painting. I don't know why that is so. I used red and yellow mixed in the brown for her highlights, but as I say ...the result, most likely due to my questionable photography skills, is it appeared more red here than I intended...or is ...so in the picture, it's a good deal browner. How I arrived at the colour? After awhile one can get a sense from the grade of the gray tones...the photos aren't strictly b/w, they are shades of grey as well. It can't be exact of course, but it can be close...one hopes. But rosieposie is correct as well . One reads everything and puts all that into the mix. In this regard, Tatiana's eyes are a real puzzler. I have read of them being " amber" and " light grey" and " dark grey," ...so which do you go with? I went with light grey in the sun light and dark grey in shadow. Thanks for the question!
-
This is slightly off-topic but...I had an idea similar to that today, blessOTMA...meaning the shades of gray and colors and stuff. Has anyone ever found modern photos taken by old cameras (meaning cameras used at OTMA's time) on the Internet? I'd really like to see how much the lighting generally used to take photographs back then compares to lighting used in modern times, but using the same old cameras. If we saw the modern photograph, the same one, taken by both a modern camera and the old one, maybe we could see how "off" we are in determining what people looked like by comparing them.
If this makes no sense, tell me...I was just wondering very much about it and think the idea is pretty interesting, since I hadn't thought about it since reading these recent posts.
-
abbgail it would be interesting experiment...but one would need a camera from that time, film and the whole set up. It would be great to set that up, then a take pictures of things and then compare the b/w pictures with color photos of the items., side by side. One way I make educated guesses is, to look at item whose colors we know and compare them to the b/w photos from back in the day. For a example when we look at Olga's Hussar uniform in color, the blue and the red seem equally as bright. But in the b/w photo , the red reads much darker. So it's part research, part reasonable guess....as to how a colour will read in a b/w photo...then comes the taking a leap part. lol!
-
That is true, especially about the uniforms etc...I hope to find something like that online in the future.
You know what I'd really like to do? Take photos of people with an old camera! It would be so strange to see yourself in an early-20th-century photograph!
-
One can really only even try to reproduce the photos with an old camera, the type of film they had , the whole bit. The lenses were even different. But I'm sure somebody, somewhere is doing this! It 's too much fun for it not be done! lol!

Hi! I know that this is just for posting artwork like Romanov, the real people. I decided to do a piece, with me included in it...

It is myself, in the same style as Alexei was in 1913, during the Tercentenary Sessions at Livadia.
I love your coloured sketches Magdalena :)
Keep posting people, I love seeing new artwork :)
God Speed! *salutes*

What a neat idea! It's an amazing drawing! Those lines must have been really difficult.

thank you Abigail. :) It was indeed hard.. especially when I try and draw my own person. It's hard to do it. But atleast I have fotos to go upon for that mission :)

This is not a happy, post. It's more of a somber, and scary post. It's of the Imperial Family. I haven't gotten Dr. Botkin, Alexei Trupp, or Ivan Kharitonov in there yet. I am working on it but.. its a work in progress.
I title it : "The Last Portrait"

But sad i-i. I-TA, Anastasia looks younger than she was there! But nvm!! It's pretty!
-
That's beautiful, TsarevichAlexei. You have a very interesting style.
-
Thankyou Gorseheart, Tasia, and abbigail.
I know it is a sad image to see someone draw, alot of people wonder how come I can draw with so much raw emotion, they way they all look anxious and tired.. and just-woken up. Im still in process in drawng it to complete it.
this is what i believe they all looked like that night.
there's so many renditions of it.
God Bless the IMperial Famiyl and God Bless the Tsar and God Bless us all! :)

AW! That's cute! I wish I knew how commissions worked. ^^;
Well, you can find an artist who is willing to draw things for you for pay, pay him or her, give the person instructions and descriptions, and wait for the artist to perform his or her magic!

Gorseheart, as much as we DO genuinely appreciate and adore your Romanov related art pieces of Alexei, I would kindly ask that we keep this thread about Romanov related artwork. Try and keep other work you do to your DeviantArt page, it will be duly appreciated. Don't by any means take this as an attack, I just wanted to draw your attention to this fact.
-
Dear NAOTMAA Fan, Relax. My guess Gorseheart is proud of it and would like to share it with us, which isn't a problem and its only one piece of artwork non-romanov. now if it was all the time that's a different story. And I really like you put your resquest very kindly. ;)
-

I realized saying something would have appeared severe, and I'm not on some personal vendetta to bash people, but posting non-related artwork has already become a small problem in the past. I just wanted to remind people to try and keep this thread related to it's original title and purpose, tis' all.

Sigh, it happens a lot and NAOTMAA FAN I just gave up on telling people they should be searching or post something somewhere else. But as Mandie said Gorseheart wanted to share their new piece with us. Which is cute.

NAOTMAA Fan - its really not a problem, so don't worry ;)

Thank you! I guess I shouldn't put up anymore on here, it seems as though I haven't the need to draw them because rude comments come from many of the discussions. Everytime I think of the Romanovs, I think of all those comments and I decide not to draw them. Thanks again and you're right, I'm deeply ofended and hurt by many of THESE types of comments. I already stated that it was non-Romanov, but misconcepted it by the title. ART by Romanov fans. I won't do it again, but next time, lets not be angry and scorn. Thanks.

But as Mandie said Gorseheart wanted to share their new piece with us. Which is cute.

ok, i did this a couple of months ago, the whole image of what it would look like as a finished piece just popped into my head, and i think it turned out pretty well, opinions?

Is this Alix? Also you have alot of symbolism here...can you tell me what the different crosses mean? Also is that blood? Interesting!
-
Not bad Tuna ears, Why is there a Christian cross and not Orthodox?
-
well when i drew it i didn't intend it to be anyone in particular- but i suppose it looks most like alix, so its kinda who you interpret it as. i did it roughly one saturday afternoon so to be honest i don't know why i didn't do an orthodox cross- mind you alix was a protestant originally. Yes, that bloos, it was the last thing i added at the end, i did it with red ink and basically spread it by blowing in a straw. The water thing on the far left is kinda meant to represant peterhof, and underneath the blood is an outline of the russian empire as it was , ther roman numeral 2 is obviously to represant Nicholas, and tha hand with the cross i did draw to be alix's hand. the flowers don't particularly symbolize anything, but i just wanted to show the glory anf beauty of Romanov rule and the russian empire, and then the blood just to show the terrible memory and horror that covered the original ideas of Russia pre 1918. the writing is saying in russian roughly an alix quote "he is hated because we love him" on rasputin, but the translation could be dodgy.
-
Very interesting!!!
-
Interesting, TunaEars! Can I help you to correct a little mistake in translation? Now it says: "He hated because we love him", in russian must be: "он ненавидим, потому что мы любим его" :) :)
-
thanks for the correction! i didn't expect my translation to be correct- my grandads the russian speaker- i'm only a simple english mind- lol
-
I love your symbolic work Tunaears : D

~I-TsarevichAlexei13 , that is remarkable! Doing a pattern like that and NOT making it "busy" isn't easy!
And the rest is excellent! Well done!

lol, thankyou Blessotma, I admit it was challenging, to do both the Mauve Boudoir, with all its delicate-looking furniture, and the walls, and frames and everything, but the bedchamber, had that lovely chintz-shined fabric on the chairs, and walls :) I love it! :)
I'm not sure now which room i should do next.. lol

I think I got it right. Alexei is spelled Aleksey in Russian, so the cryllic is correct. Plus the backwards N with the swoop means Y. But thanks anyways.

I-TsarevichAlexei13 I some how missed the cat drawing before now...hilarious! Very well done!

Thank you! I draw all the time. It's summer break and I get bored often. :) I just had my first year of art, but it might be my last for a while, but I hope to aim for animation. Uh, I don't know.... ^^; I just got a charcoal pencil, but I usually use Graphite or Watercolor. I also use color pencil. Sorry for rambling, ^^; Do you draw?

Nena is back. Those are amazing ones, Gorseheart! I am doing on drawing of Tatiana Nicholaievna . Will be hopefully soon uploaded.
-
Nena, by all means finish soon!
And I do draw in fact (if you look on previous pages you can see some of my posts); admittedly I have a deviantArt account as well. I think you have a good hand with charcoal, I've never really been any good with anything other than pencil; I'm amateur at best with coloured pencils mind you. Are you in college/ university now? What is it exactly you're taking.

For all intensive purposes and shameless self-promotion, you can see my account here: http://www.keeganyoung.deviantart.com/ When you get into university you'll more than likely have the opportunity to learn Russian, most institutions will provide a wide range of language courses. But good luck in the meantime.

I was pleased to have helped you, blessOTMA ! :D It turned out to be the amazing piece. Really breathtaking one. I just starred onto it for a few moments -- well, that is the artists' job - to reach the beauty and to impress the people. :D You did it great, you really did.
Also, thank you Elly and to the others on your kind compliments. Great new ones!

Tsarevich Alexei fan13, first off, thank you for asking... I imagine you site isn't for profit, so you may post it . I make big files of the paintings so people may print them for their own , personal use...but I keep the rights...friends have told me to say this and so now I will. I keep all rights to my paintings.
The short answer is : okay :)
-
Sure, thanks for letting me use it it will beon the contributed work under Art Would it be okay if I could have your first name or would you rather have me say on it from blessOTMA? Thanks again!
-
I'll pm you Tsarevich Alexei fan13 :)

Excellent, excellent, excellent work as always. There's something about his face you've managed to catch which is quite perfect.
-
(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/Alexis/ANJoy.jpg)
Thank you! Your comment means much. This is the reference photo. His face is somewhat indistinct in it...so I also used the photo of AN where he's with his mother and Alix is in her nurses uniform . Alexei has his photo taken with the big pair the same day. I used that for details, but used this photo for the shape of his head , jaw, etc. So it would look right with the rest . I was going to do the trees, but decided they would be a distraction.
-
Woww I just looked at the 50 pages and all of you are so talented!
I did a drawing of Alexey the other day, but... I don't know how to post it ahem, I'm going to check how to do this and as soon as I find it, will post it ^^

"Where are the flowers, the fair young flowers, that lately sprang and stood.
In brighter light and softer airs, a beauteous sisterhood?
Alas! they all are in their graves, the gentle race of flowers
Are lying in their lowly beds, with the fair and good of ours.
The rain is falling where they lie, but the cold November rain
Calls not from out the gloomy earth the lovely ones again."
"And then I think of one who in her youthful beauty died,
The fair meek blossom that grew up and faded by my side.
In the cold moist earth we laid her, when the forests cast the leaf,
And we wept that one so lovely should have a life so brief:
Yet not unmeet it was that one, like that young friend of ours,
So gentle and so beautiful, should perish with the flowers."
- abstracts from "The Death of the Flowers" by William Cullen Bryant
Finally done. I mean, what's a year anyways? In dedication to the brief lives of:
Olga Nicholaievna 1895-1918
Tatiana Nicholaievna 1897-1918
Maria Nicholaievna 1899-1918
Anastasia Nicholaievna 1901-1918

Keegan, in all seriousness...this needs to be a print. Truly amazing

That is indeed very lovely! Truly exquisite. How long did it take you to draw?
I love the way they look so real and sort of glowing. Their blouses look like real silk! I also love Tatiana's little smile, and their heights. The background makes me sad... :'(

It's just splendid one! Well done!

I took some pictures of my best Romanov sketches to share with you all...here they are: :-*

(http://a.imageshack.us/img828/8383/littlepairsketch.jpg) little pair on the Standart. if you look close at Nastya, she's rolling her eyes a bit--it wasn't on purpose!
(http://a.imageshack.us/img828/298/anastasiasketchwhatif.jpg) a "what if" drawing of Anastasia. the black thing is supposed to be a purse, but it looks more like a camera!

I actually didn't paint this, it's done in pencil and I fiddled with the skin on photoshop a bit. Here's a more honest look at what it's like in person: http://www.keeganyoung.deviantart.com/#/d2vupok

Laura, thank you so very much : ))))))))))
That is indeed very lovely! Truly exquisite. How long did it take you to draw?
I love the way they look so real and sort of glowing. Their blouses look like real silk! I also love Tatiana's little smile, and their heights. The background makes me sad... :'(
I've been working on this since last August, but for months it's sat there as just a sketch on paper. I finally got around to do some serious shading when I got off school back in April. So the majority of the work was done over a 5 month period. Tatiana seems to be most people's favourite, even my own. I was so incredibly pre-occupied with worrying about their heights when drawing this, as I thought I'd made Tatiana too tall. But I found one picture of them taken in late 1917 or early 1918 that showed them pretty much at those same heights so I felt a little better. The background is very much meant to be sad, a reminder of what happened and what was lost.
It's just splendid one! Well done!
Thank you Nena!
-
My gooness! Since last August! Well, it shows, how much hard work you put into such a lovely piece of artwork.
And that's excatly what I thought, their heights look just like in the Olga-smiling-bald-heads picture!
-
Keegan, for some reason my computer doesn't like that art site generally! lol! But I was on your account long enough to see the drawing without photo shop and love that too. I LIKE how big it is as well and totally agree that bigger is better when doing Romanov portraits. I find I need room to create a likeness. I'm glad to learn you are doing something about a print of this piece! I want one!

I must admit, the original photo really shows not so much, though I could have done it bit detailed/better. Ahh, I am satisfied with the result. (This one is scanned, since I had posted the same taken by my cam).
-
Very good! I like it.
You're right, the original picture doesn't show much detail, because it's a full shot, but your drawing looks quite like the photo!
Odd hats they're wearing.

Thank you both! I am glad you like it - though, I repeat again, I could have done it bit better. :)

But that is always the case! We always think : it could have been better! And that is what drives one on! Often at the end of a painting, I think, NOW I'm ready to paint this picture! lol! My own Olga will be posted tomorrow! :)

Anne, I'm very excited for the final piece to be posted!
And Nena, excellent work! Will you be doing all of OTMAA from that particular photograph?
-
I really look forward to see your Olga Nicholaievna, blessOTMA !!!!
Well, Keegan, I must admit that after I did Tatiana, I got demoralized since it turned out bad, and I got no will to continue. At least, not yet. However that photo is so unclear so I can't see much of their expressions. Or should I choose another photo of them? Thank you on your compliment, it means a lot! :D

Great sketch, blessOTMA! :)
Wow, you've been interested in the Romanovs for a long time!
-
Thank you! Actually I started being interested in them in the late 1960's as a teenager...like many here. When I started, it was thought they would never be found etc. and there certainly wasn't something like the fabulous AP forum or You Tube! I haven't been super interested all this time, I would do other things for a few years...but Romanovs always return and often stronger than before lol!
-
I thought you might like this one :D
It's of Nicholas II, and his son on board the Shtandart, a well-known foto of them. I wish I could find it again lol..
But here it is, I guess you would consider it a line drawing, or yeah.. lol The pencil drawing looked A TON more better, then the permanent marker, but the marker brought the detail out better :P
God Bless!

Thank you! Actually I started being interested in them in the late 1960's as a teenager...like many here. Yes, I, too, go back and forth. for a while I was 'off' the Romanovs, and then I discovered Angel on the Square at the library, and it was stronger than ever! (that's when I discovered here.) Nowadays they're always there, but they vanish for a day or so about every week... :P Sometimes I have OTMA days, sometimes I have Judy Garland days, sometimes both, or neither, and another of my interests. Last week I had a Sissi day... today it's both... :)

May I color this one?
-
I LOVE the work on this page! The lines are so delicate...Tsarevich Alexei, you use a really cool drawing style (which I've probably said before...it's very true).
Don't not have anything to post today, but we're doing "altered books" in art class (changing/decorating with paint and cutouts & stuff to a specific theme) and mine's based on old black-and-white photographs...about 8 pages are required and the Romanovs are getting their own page, of course :). I'm going to post pictures of that page when it's done.
-
Sounds like fun! Do post it! :) What are the other pages going to be of? You've inspired me to do something like that too! except I don't really know excatly what it is... ::)
-
My newest portrait. Not very good. I hope to color it!

Wow!!!!! Great portrait Gorseheart!!!

That's great!

Remarkable! Nice shading

Remarkable! Nice shading
I couldn't agree more!
-
Thank you! You all make me blush! I have drawn Nicholas recently, but I wasn't happy with the results.
-
I am working on Tatiana Nikolaievna drawing. However, here is the sketch:
(http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/th_P1090899.jpg) (http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/?action=view¤t=P1090899.jpg)
Paper dimensions -- 11.4 x 16.3 inches, it seems I will have to do the another shoulder of her on other piece of paper. Use HB, 2B pencils. (And a one more, there is no mark on it).
Here is what I have done so far:
(http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/th_P1090901.jpg) (http://s185.photobucket.com/albums/x139/nemanjapr/?action=view¤t=P1090901.jpg)
I took the photos with my cam. Once I finish it, it will be scanned. However, I made a little mistake in shading her chin. It will take some time till I am completely done. I am still 'sketching'. :-D
-
Sounds like fun! Do post it! :) What are the other pages going to be of? You've inspired me to do something like that too! except I don't really know excatly what it is... ::)
Well, basically you just take a large hardback book (glue some of the pages together so it's not floppy) and re-decorate the pages according to your theme. It's like making a new book.
The other pages will be of other people from history that I'm interested in, like Rudolph Valentino and other actors, Vaslav Nijinsky and Anna Pavlova, Arthur Rimbaud...and others too that I can't think of right now :D
-
nena ! I love where you are going with Tatiana! Keep at it. Marvelous and amazing already !!
I have new found sympathy for the photographers who took Tatiana's picture during her life . I have tried for days to take a decent photo of my TN portrait... and finally got one I feel I can post. It's easy to say, but I think it's better than my photograph !
However here is my Tatiana Nikolaevna and her video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3NpGULt44g showing the process.
and now my OTMA , 1914 portrait group is complete

OTMA 1914
-
I love it, you've captured Tanya perfectly. In fact, you've done a wonderful job on all of OTMA. Thanks for sharing your paintings with us, BlessOTMA.
-
Thank you Tim! I know she's your favorite, so if you like her painting , that means a great deal. I love sharing my Romanov pictures with those on here, AP...with others who also care about the family...and who KNOW what they looked like. It means more than I can say if others on AP are pleased with them .
-
Thank you and 1914 Tatiana is just amazing!!!!
-
Thank you nena! ...I really see your drawings opening up, getting freer and it's exciting. :)

OTMA 1914
blessOTMA, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL work! I'm so glad to see it completed, and what an accomplishment it is. I think it may be my favourite of the lot (not that I don't like all of them immensely). Her eyes are very well done, and her expression is captured quite perfectly. A round of applause to you.
-
Thank you Keegan! It means a great deal to me you should like them so well. Being a Romanov artist yourself, you know it's a labor of love. But it's funny, the paintings are like my children ...I can't pick a favorite! lol! I will now embark on a large rendition of Marie , Olga and Tatiana dressed for KR's funeral. It will take some time , but I so look forward to it. Thank you again!

uh, i guess i posted the pencil version of my work in progress on Tatiana's portrait - here goes another WIP, my God, I will never ever finish this, i don't know what to do with it next... maybe in one year, you will get the final version :D

-
Magdalena, I can't wait to see the finished version of that!
-
Magdalena you are at a very interesting point, where it's time for the lines. It's like getting ready to dive into a pool
... one has to decide when and were to take the plunge. I would say approach it freely, you can always undo it....
and you might gain a happy accident :). Much of art is recognizing something has happened and keeping it ,
rather than consciously making it happen. It looks great so far!
-
oh blessOTMA, I guess you know how hard this stage is, that i'm trying to do right now... so far, I did the whole face, but it looks so awful, oh gosh, i won't finish it in 15 years O_o
-
Magdalena, look at your reference photo as much if not more than your work. One can lose their way other wise. Infuse yourself with the reference photo....that's where your inspiration is. And I would say just do it...this is on computer right? Save a file of what you have and then make a number of attempts... you can always go back to the current file...I post my videos to show people the art is made in a mess...it's not perfect, it's one long correction. By the end of the picture , I have painted their faces many times. And I can do the last one because I know the way...having traveled it so much before. If it had to be right from the first, I couldn't do it. What you have now is quite good! Also think about using a dark brown for your lines. It's less harsh than black. But try not to judge yourself , even about how long it is taking!
;)
-
You know how much I love your work blessOTMA! I'm looking forward to see the OTM one.
I've made a drawing of Olga (http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/976/olgam.jpg). At first I was quite happy with it, but now I've seen it scanned, I'm not so sure anymore..
-
You know how much I love your work blessOTMA! I'm looking forward to see the OTM one
Thank you ! It's coming along nicely!, thank goodness!. One never knows! I've made a drawing of Olga (http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/976/olgam.jpg). At first I was quite happy with it, but now I've seen it scanned, I'm not so sure anymore..
It's very good! But you know the eyes remind me of Tatiana's more than Olga's.. look at the bottom of her eyes again. They are quite different than TN's...if you change the drawing a bit to reflect what you see in a close up, you might see an improvement in the likeness ... the right eye is more like Olga's than the left imo. But as I say, it's very good! This is just a small suggestion. But I think you have been drawing for awhile! You have a nice style :)
-
BlessOTMA, I guess you're right! When I've got time I will change it. I think I will put some more shadow below the left eye, it may be a small change, but I hope it will be enough.
Thanks for the advise, it's nice to get some from such an artist!
-
Missy-T you are too kind! Yes OTMAA had creases under their eyes...putting them in helps one.

Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye
Golden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye
Once there was a way to get back homeward
Once there was a way to get back home
Sleep pretty darling do not cry
And I will sing a lullabye

Based on the song Golden Slumbers by the Beatles. Beautiful song! I have never drawn Grand Duchess Olga before, so, here she is! Thanks for adding me Olga fanclub!

Is it the one where she is in an arbor of Gycenia? Thank you!
-
Arbor of Gycenia? Someone, please, enlighten me as to what photo this is...
Is it the one where she is in an arbor of Gycenia?
-
I based the drawing off a picture from Livadia from when she's standing in the arbor of Glycinia. It's in the Romanov Family Album I think....
-
Gorgeous, Gorseheart! I love the colors and, of course, the Beatles lyrics. ;]
-
I based the drawing off a picture from Livadia from when she's standing in the arbor of Glycinia. It's in the Romanov Family Album I think....
Exactly...while they were staying at Livadia when the photo was taken , the photo was taken at a villa ruin called Oreanda ...Yale album 3. I love that one particularly and the one with Tatiana taken the same day because they are stunning course...but also because they seem to be arranging themselves as if they are in paintings... the type of paintings their palaces were full off...and now I 'm putting them in paintings. When I see these photos I have to wonder : what if there was no WW1?...the photos are from May of 1914.Here's another from that day you may like to do =)

Oh, now I know what you're talking about. Anne, why don't you do a painting of that yourself? But of course you already have Olga's Russian dress photo lined up...
-
Oh, now I know what you're talking about. Anne, why don't you do a painting of that yourself? But of course you already have Olga's Russian dress photo lined up...
I will definitely be doing one from these 1914 photos at some point ...because they are so astonishingly gorgeous...I mean their beauty is like a brilliant light. ...but there's other paintings ahead of that ...such as finishing the current 1915 OTM funeral one and then there is an Anastasia one, then finally, one of Alix and Nicky...even before I get to Olga in the Russian court dress...so lots of painting FUN ahead =)

I recently read Dr. Botkins's last letter, addressed to his brother, Alexander . It was found in Ipatiev House when the town fell to the White forces in 1918. I was so moved by Dr. Botkin's letter and what this man says , I had to make a video. But there are so few photos of Dr. Bokin that I know of, that I decided to made drawings of him especially for this video to illustrate his letter. They are done with pencil and watercolours, then scanned. I might have to do a graphic novel!
Here are some of the drawings and the video link

-
I agree. Great drawings. You are an artist, and those draws deserves a cartoon book all for themselves, with the whole Ipatiev story in it.
RealAnastasia.

Thank you both, I have been thinking about it for sure....Once I started, they seem to draw themselves...There are graphic novels...how about graphic history books? =)

I very much want those who love the family to see and enjoy the paintings .
So yes indeed! =)
And I'm looking forward to showing everyone the painting I have been working on for now 6 months when its finished

Hey there, I love your work :) Is that water paints?

Thank you! Yes, water colour and also water colour pencils...they act like colour pencils unless you touch the lines with water and then they become water colour paint ...very nice for creating shades and softening lines. =)

A post 8 1/2 half months in the making
OTM dressed for the 1915 funeral of their father's cousin, KR.
The last sate funeral of Imperial Russia
36 inches by 48
(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/KR%20funeral%20painting/th_appostfull.jpg) (http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/KR%20funeral%20painting/appostfull.jpg)
This painting has TWO videos
a short version that just about the painting and for those who know the photo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mEJNndoasiU
A longer version that shows the painting, what was happening in 1915, and the 1998 Romanov family funeral

Enjoy!
-
What an awesome piece! I love your work, and I love your videos! Thank you so much for sharing with us!
-
Thank you Laura, that means a great deal to me . The paintings are for the family, myself and just as importantly, the family of Romanov enthusiasts. =)
-
Annie, it's very beautiful! You are a very talented painter. Wish to see your other works.
And of course Order of St. Catherine...absolutely historically accurate!
-
That is a spectacular painting, Annie! I love the colors and lighting. You captured Olga particularly well.
-
Thank you Holly! When Olga's eyes popped out of the canvas...I really don't know who was more surprised...her or me! Her eyes are 95% in shadow but are painted lighter than they would be would be normally because even though they are in in shadow, sunlight is being reflected up into them from the ground . This is how you create the sense of the person being there in 3-D
Nicolá!! getting an "absolutely historically accurate" from you about the stars is a such feather in my cap!! Thank you! I painted them fairly loosely to give the sense of them flashing in the sun ....Indeed in the photo, Olga's face is splashed with the reflection of Marie's star by dozens of points of light. I didn't include them...but I did add the bright spot her own star's reflection is causing at her waist
-
What a great picture, blessOTMA!
I agree with Holly, Olga was especially good . . . but then, they all were!
-
The second video was so beautiful. The funeral almost made me cry.
Absolutely marvelous painting. :) And the stars are quite excellent.
-
Thank you all =)

I love that. Freaking awesome! Beautiful too!
-
Absolutely gorgeous, blessOTMA!
-
Thank you both ! =) I'm glad it turned out so well...you just never know with art! Looking at the photo , I realized Olga had two curls on either side of her face and so I put them in. The famous "mark" on her right ceek is a curl that goes with the one on the other side that is easier to see.
-
You are freaking AWESOME... of course!
-
Wow! It's really stunning!
-
BEAUTIFUL!! Outstanding!
Just curious, how long did it take you to draw and paint that?
-
BEAUTIFUL!! Outstanding!Just curious, how long did it take you to draw and paint that?
Thank you for asking! There are two answers : A few hours and 40 years lol!( meaning one's current art stands on the shoulders of the art one has done) ....plus about 7 false starts, each which taught me something that helped the next time I tried =)

A oil painting I'm working on, about 4 hours in. Sorry, bad pic, took by my phone, I'll scan a better one when it's dry!
Pretty bad on the tones and the face DX First painting of Alexei....
Art(C) Me, Gorseheart, Tsm
Alexei Nikolaevich
Don't steal! lol
-
I love it! Especially the hair, where its red in some places and brown in others! A true auburn. The tones aren't too bad, I like the sailor outfit colours. :) the cheekbones look a tad high, but it doesn't bring down the mood at all :)
-
Excellent start!! Keep going. It's helpful to take the photo it's based on and do stuff like look at the ends of AN's mouth and then stright up.
What does that line go though and does your pictor do the same....see where the end of the ears are on the photo and draw a mental line across his face ...does that match your picture? You will amazed how this sort of checking helps . Also what seems the problem may not be. It maybe something next to it ....look around a problem area, not just where you think it's messed up...so often I find the problem is else where and it just effecting where I'm looking.
-
Thanks....
-
I need help finding high quality pics for painting ^^; Thanks for the help guysssss!

One is not finished until they are satisfied. If you don't like them, then keep on . I don't paint nearly as much as much as I correct what I have done ...and I'm still correcting months later. Well , give it a think. I don't know the photo of the two children, so can't say ...but this AN is very good....but if you look carefully at each of AN's features, I believe you will see more you can do...and attain more from your picture. My painting are always asking more of me ...to reach for more, to dare for more...and it IS river boat gabling to risk what one has to perhaps achieve more...but after saying all that, I think it's good now ...the eyes and head shape particularly. I have a tip that helps. I put clear plastic over where I believe I can improve something and try it on the plastic. If it works, great, then I do it on the painting ...but if it doesn't , I haven't lost anything =)
-
Thank you, and no matter what people say Gorseheart, even people who try to give advice, I love your art. :)
-
I don't know the photo of the two children,
Lol, that's Marie Gabrielle and her son Prince Luitpold of Bavaria.
-
oops ...lol
-
Well done.

Thanks guys.

Thank you!

P.S. Would this be allowed in the Romanov paintings thread?

Gorseheart, I'm so envious. That's so dang good! Same goes for you Mandie. Great job you guys. ;D
-
Really?! Thank you so much!!!!
-
I saw S .S. Sunbeam a while back, and then I just had to look at the other albums. Long story short, you got me hooked on bootlegging, Tommy gun shooting, zoot suit wearing cats. I blame you :D (Go Lackadaisy!)
-
very nice Alexi!

Lol Really?! That's awesome! I love Lackadaisy too!!!!!
Thanks Bless :)

I've just done an impressionist kinda picture of Anastasia:

Imp and Jemmy 1917
-
Utterly adorable! Just wondering...how long did it take you to do that sketch, and others like it?
-
That's great! I love the expression on Jemmy's face :)
-
Thank you both. The cartoon like ones, like this ,take about 2 hours...the major paintings, take months. Glad you enjoyed it =)
-
I did a quick drawing of Nicholas and was surprised how stern his expression turned out...but you know gentle Nicholas could look very stern if he had a mind to.
(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/th_NAR2byA2big-1.jpg) (http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/NAR2byA2big-1.jpg)(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/th_qt.jpg) (http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/qt.jpg)
Here's a photo when he's giving a withering glance to Olga...one can see her "humble snub" lowered
in what seems to be contrition ...she might have made a brash remark that displeased her father....not impossible lol!
(http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/th_NAR2Aba2.jpg) (http://i792.photobucket.com/albums/yy202/blessOTMA/AP%20Postings%202/NAR2Aba2.jpg)
and then playing around with filters on the old Mac,
I accidentally created this psychedelic Nicholas...which I almost like better lol!
psychedelic - having the vivid colors and bizarre patterns associated with psychedelic states; "a psychedelic painting"

Breathtaking Ann! Congratulations to you on this accomplishment and, of course, thanks for sharing!
-
Thank you! . Sharing is the fun part...I'm still amazed at how well she came out...it's a miracle really
-
Ah...now I see the crude watermarks I put on these files is showing up on photo-bucket, they weren't when I first posted...my initials and the date are not on the painting! But friends have begged me to put some kind of watermark on my painting files before posting on the web and so reluctantly, I have. ...Sadly, I can't figure out how to do it in text without it being on her face!
-
This new painting is as amazing as always, the video is great too!!! Congratulations and keep this work up!!! :) :o
-
Thank you Yelena! Oh yeah, alot of Romanov art ahead! =)
-
Annie, I'd like to give you several compliments, but I can't, since I am totally speechless -- it is truly beautiful, the colors make he photo alive. Well, well done! Just keep doing it :)
-
Thank you nena! That means a great deal
Indeed! Alexi and the Tsar from 1916 are next =)
-

What I find so impressive is that this is really a definitive video of Anastasia you've made with or without the painting. And then of course the painting itself is fabulous! It's superb how you tied the two together and built up the anticipation while showing photos and video from the Imp's different life stages. Then we climax with the portrait...a masterstroke!
-
its not really art but i made it and thought it was funny

Well anyways, I’m not a comic artist, if anyone can do better and funny, go right ahead. I always enjoy a good clean cut joke even about the Romanovs. :]

When I see the artworks I have to say that you guys are all talented :)

I did a picture of NAOTMAA with Copic markers, but due to the dimensions I had to capture it in two photos which unfortunately are slightly blurred. And I did this picture when I was just getting acquainted with their faces, so...
Anyway, enough self-deprecating. Here are the links to the picture:

I would like to try to draw of one of the 1913 family photos, or maybe OTMA in 1914, but if anyone has any other Romanov requests, send me the photo, and I will do my best to accommodate :)
