« on: April 20, 2011, 12:35:06 AM »
Which members of the imperial family were in atendance at the opening of the 1st Duma April 1906?  i can identifiy some of the Imperial faimily in the famous picture taken that day but there is a woman next to Xenia that i can't quite make out also who is  the woman next to Olga and  behind the unidentifed woman is that Princess William of Baden (Maria,  Pss Romanowsky).  The woman behined Olga l think is Alexandra Josefiovna.  There are five women behined Marie Pavlova the elder not sure who they are.  One is on the end holding a pair of Lorgnette  spectacles next to her is that Duchess Alexander of Oldenburg ( Eugenia , Pss Romanowsky)  and right at the top of Mare Pavlova's  tiara is a woman i can barly make out maybe Maria Alexandrovna (Duchess of Edinburgh) ? Who are the two woman between Marie Pavlova the elder and Marie Pavlova the younger?  To find the pic go to http://www.romanovrussia.com/LargeNIIphoto.html

Alexandra Feodorovna / Alix's suitor's
« on: March 23, 2010, 02:11:43 PM »
Besides Nicholas & Albert-Victor did Alix have any other suitors?  Is it true that one of the Baden prince's wanted to marry her?

It looks like she had a very sad life.   Even though Grand Duke Ludwig II acknowledged  Marie as his own daughter she lived in a separate establishment in Heiligenberg while the Grand Duke lived in Darmstadt.  It was common knowledge that her real father was her mothers lover Baron August von Senarclens de Grancy.  Her mother-in-law Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna objected to the marriage of her son to Maria but Alexander insisted.  Her life in Russia was quiet difficult as Russian high society regarded Maria as stiff, austere, and with no taste in dress, no conversation, no charm.   The damp climate of Saint Petersburg did not agree with the delicate chest Marie had inherited from her mother, so that she had a racking cough and recurring fever. Nevertheless, she became the mother of eight children. These pregnancies together with ill health kept her away from many Court festivities, which brought temptations to her husband.  Although he always treated her well, Marie knew Alexander was unfaithful and had many lovers.  But the most important thing is she loved her children and they adored her.   What do you all think of her? send pics and any facts about her life.

Alix and Nicky were more closely related through their fathers.  Ludwig IV was Alexander III's first cousin.

So keeping it in the family.  So Nicky and Alix are second cousins right?

2nd half cousins.  There is some question has to the paternity of Empress Maria Alexandrova  her mother Wilhelmine of Baden bore seven children, of whom four survived. Her last four children, including Alexander and Marie, were believed to have been fathered by August von Senarclens de Grancy, her longtime lover.  When in 1838, the Tsarevich Alexander Nikolayevich toured Europe to find a wife, he fell in love with the 14-year-old Marie. He married her on 16 April 1841, even though he was well aware of the "irregularity" of her birth. His mother Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna objected, but Alexander insisted.

Could someone explain to me fully how Nicholas II is related to Queen Victoria? I know that Nicholas is the 1st cousin of George V (through his maternal side of the family), who was Victoria's grandson. I also know that Alexandra is the granddaughter of Queen Victoria through her mother Alice. I got all this information from Robert Massie's book in the family trees indexed at the back.
From this information I am guessing that Nicholas' mother was Queen Victoria's daughter, but I am not too sure. Could someone explain?

They are 2nd cousins 3 times removed
