Thanks for the video.  It's amazing and gives such a great perspective of everything.  I love aerial views of Tsarskoe Selo.   

I've been to the horse cemetery.  The first time, it was covered knee deep in snow, so it was difficult to tell if I was in the right area. I ventured out a few months later, when there wasn't as much snow, and found it, but the tombs were still covered in snow.  Though you could make out that it was the graves.  That dog was there, barking at me and some guy came out to see what the commotion was all about.  He gave me a cross look then shook his head no when I motioned if it was okay to come inside.

That shop in the famous Singer building is the Dom Knigi, House of books, by far the best bookstore in SPb. In the basement is a department Russian history, also with books on the Romanvovs, but all books in Russian. A chain with shops all over Spb, several of them on Nevsky Prospekt is called Bukvoed. However, their history departments are rather poor. A shop close to the Dom Knigi, just off Nevsky Prospekt in a basement on Malaya Konyushennaya 9, orthodox/christian bookstore Slovo has a small collection of books on Russian history, for ex. Buexhoeveden's two volume memoirs (in Russian) and last week they had three of the four volumes appeared so far of the biographical materials of GD Sergei Alexandrovich (also in Russian). The two volume albums of the 1903 Costume Ball you will not find in these shops. A few copies are offered on internet. Most second hand bookshops have disappeared and the main book business (new, old and rare books) is being done through the internet, in Russia too!

Good tip.  I never thought to go inside that orthodox bookstore.  I like Bukvoed and sometimes got better deals there than at Dom Knigi, but they don't carry as much inventory.  I did find some really nice books on royalty there that weren't at Don Knigi, so it's always best to visit both.  The one closest to Dom Knigi (few blocks down as you're walking towards the Winter Palace), is the one I had the most success with finding things.

When I was there last year it was all fenced off.  It looks as if they are either going to renovate or just trying to keep people out (or both).

I thought Alexander died almost after his birth. So if he died a month before his first birthday, there must be more images of him, since their brothers had several images as babies.

Let hope they pop up soon, it would be great see that baby alive. Seeing the PM image, you can tell he was beautiful!

I'm convinced there are photos of Alexander somewhere.  Maybe just collecting dust in some archives.  I find it hard to believe there were many photos of the other children, but none of him.  That said, I believe Alexander and Marie traveled a great deal during baby Alexander's first year, so there's a possibility there weren't photos.

Indeed. Here at Eurohistory we were trying to get copies of the book from Russia and during our negotiating it was suggested that we become Liki Rossii's window to the West.

We believe that both companies will benefit greatly ... while also being able to produce the books that sop many of us want!

If all goes well...there will be many other projects, surely, that both companies and all our authors can cooperate in!

Art, I'm so happy to read this.  Liki Rossii has some amazing publications.  With your knowledge and ability to reach our niche audience with unique content, I can only predict wonderful things for both publishing houses.

Can't wait! I will definitely be buying this.  I saw the Russian language copy of this book in St. Petersburg.  I wanted it so badly in English though.  It's got excellent photos.  I promise it won't disappoint. :-)

I own the Palaces Destroyed book.  A great addition to one's library.  I saw the Tsarskoye Selo in Old Photos book at Dom Knigi.  It was about $15USD in Russia.  Not worth the $50CAD that it's going for on the site IMHO.

Glad I could be of help, Rodney_G. :-) In the FOTR photo, the cathedral appears to dominate the skyline. Today, sadly, it's somewhat hidden as you're going up the ulitsa.  I hope the family might have drawn inspiration from it as well.

Yes, the front of the church faces west to Tolmacheva Ulitsa. This ulitsa runs north-south.
