Thank you, Yelena, and everyone for your kind compliments.  I just found out last night that the dress was selected as a finalist in the contest, so we'll see what happens from here!

These colored pictures are great inspiration.  I do believe that there is a doll thread on this site; I've been doing some research to find out more about the dolls that OTMA owned, so I came across it once or twice, and it included replies about modern dolls that look like the family.

There are a number of sewing books I can recommend. Many doll fashion designers use paper towels to create the patterns, because you can just fit them to the doll body, trace around the arm holes, and cut - but you have to remember to add a seam allowance (generally 1/4 inch for dolls).

Love all these colored pictures because they can really make the costumes "pop" and one can visualize how a garment could look more easily.  All of you are amazing artists!  Wish I could color photos as you do.

Oh... this is so depressing... I can never seem to get images to work correctly. :-(  Well... the website link worked anyway.  You can see the pictures of the dress there, but not the picture of Alix with her family in her mauve and gold dress.

The above picture recently made its way to my Facebook page because I've "Liked" a particular page (Almanac Gotha, I believe).  The beautifully colored gown on Alix reminded me of the Victorian mauve she liked so very much.  I am currently involved in a sewing project using second hand sari's to create different things (see www.sarifixation.com for specifics).  I created a gown from a mauve and gold sari that I think Alexandra would have been proud to have worn.  The border design even features something which looks very much like the symbol for the cherubim; something which plays in the worship of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Dearest Courtiers,

A week or so after All Hallow's Eve, I heard a report on the tele that some bags of M&Ms were found to have been laced with a very strong hallucinogen that often brings on dillusions of grandeur and bouts of paranoia.

I believe that the same hallucinogen may have been used on the Empress Charlotte, consort of Maximillian, and it was necessary that the family essentially shut her up for the rest of her life.

I just wanted to make you aware of this, in case any poisoned M&Ms make it into the castle.  I do believe there is a fondness for these chocolates within the court, and we must be careful.

That's funny, Rudolf did mention something about Mayerling yesterday... I'll have to pay more attention, no doubt.

Grand Duchess Janet, if you have not yet found appropriate luggage, I recently came across some *spiffy* roll-your-own pieces down at the ice rink.  (no one carries their skates anymore; they ALL use the roller types).  In any case, these were rather unusual in that they had wheels that lit up a very pretty blue as the luggage was toted along, similar to some of those interesting sneakers the young Prince wears nowadays, the ones which light up whenever his foot pounds the floor.  I believe that the young woman said you could find this type at some shoppe called "Target" (pronounced Tar-zjay, or so I thought she said).

In any case, just passing along the tip.

Ah... what is it about lemon drops?  The Grand Duke Rudolf absolutely adores them.  As a matter of fact, he was once called "The Lemon Drop Kid" - something about Silver Bells and all.  Our own little Prince fell in love with one of the roses in my garden, a sweet little specimen, with tiny yellow roses.  Of course, it's name is also Lemon Drop.  Will wonders never cease?

In recognition of such wonders, I was thinking of commissioning a tiara of yellow sapphire briollets.  I just couldn't decide whether to have the frame done in platinum or yellow gold.

I hate getting older... I can't seem to remember anything anymore!  Somewhere deep in my memories is something I read about the Waldorf Astoria, a hotel in New York City, where once this rule was broken and tiaras were worn, to the shock of many.

Does that ring any bells to anyone?

Madame Jeanne Paquin was a Parisian designer who trained at Maison Roeff, and opened her own couture house in 1891 right next to the House of Worth.  Actually, Paquin eventually purchased the House of Worth in 1954, but did not outlive it much longer, as the House of Paquin only contined into the later 1950's.  The designs put forward by Madam Paquin had a bit more of a modernistic feel.  I am not sure, but I believe that the "hobble skirt" derived from one of her designs.  Paquin is most noted for their Edwardian dresses.
