Tatiana Nicholaievna / Re: Tatiana's French bulldog, Ortipo
« on: June 05, 2021, 09:09:25 PM »
Many years since this thread was written in but I can confirm that Tatiana's dog was indeed Ortipo and not Ortino. In letters of Empress Alexandra written in English, she has written the name as 'Ortipo' and in a letter of Alexei's, he has put a macron above the letter п to distinguish it from н as is well known, in hand-written Russian the letters look very similar. Anastasia's dog was never Jemmy, but Jimmy (more usually "My Jim") - she was given it in December 1916, and its original name was 'Baby', which she wrote to Petr Petrov was a 'very stupid name', so she renamed him.
Earlier in the thread it was postulated that Ortipo died around 5 Sept 1915, but this can't be as a couple of weeks later, they are writing about Ortipo's puppies and Ortipo lying down - still very much alive.

The letter is genuine and can be found in GARF 640-1-1318.

I found it interesting that Olga's diary was full of references to her mother's health, whereas that comes more rarely into Tatiana's diary.

If it is not the right one, then it is the one beside it - not such a problem, and not I don't think, an embarrassment.

Reading it now - it is quite good!

My copy arrived today. Looking forward to reading this!

Helen, a body doesn't need to be extant for the person to be a Saint.  That is why those articles seem strange to me - they already are Saints, there are icons of them. Bad reporting which has been copy-pasted in several newspapers by the look of it.

Should add that the entire family are Saints in the Orthodox Church. The BBC must have got something confused.

Passion-bearers ARE Saints in the Orthodox Church. It just describes what kind of Saint they are (Passion-bearers as opposed to say Confessors)

The one about pronunciation is an interesting issue. Here in New Zealand, many place names are in Maori. English pronunciations give mangled results, so there is a big effort made for people to say them correctly. On the other hand, who among you say "talk-your" for Tokyo, yet that is closer to the correct pronunciation. No one pronounces my wife's name, Olga, correctly either. I think it is important to make an effort to pronounce things as closely as possible to the original, but within the limitations of one's own language. Bearing that in mind, correct pronunciation of Romanov and Anastasia is not beyond English speakers.

Publishing on the Feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos! Well done!

I must say I used to be far more active, but life, responsibilities, family...they all catch up with you and you end up having less time sadly.

You could send them back in a time machine and they still wouldn't believe.

As regards photo quality, it is all due to lighting and other factors, all of which were worked out and done manually in those days. Much of this is just done automatically by cameras now.
