The Windsors / Re: King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (nee Bowes Lyon)
« on: September 20, 2010, 08:43:06 AM »
From an article regarding the Toronto International Film Festival which just finished:

"At the top of the heap is The King’s Speech, winning the Cadillac People’s Choice Award as voted by filmgoers at the 2010  (and 35th) edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, which drew to a close Sunday after a whirlwind 10 days.

Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter and based on a true story, director Tom Hooper’s film chronicles the ascension of King George VI. After his brother abdicates, George (a.k.a. Bertie and father to the reigning Queen Elizabeth II) reluctantly assumes the throne.

Plagued by a dreaded nervous stammer and considered unfit to be King, Bertie engages the help of an unorthodox speech therapist to help him overcome."

Sounds like audiences really enjoyed the film. I definitely want to see it!

What are the chances the Maple Drawing Room will be restored to it's original form?

Were the original walls white?

Having Fun! / Has Anyone Met Up with Someone with Royalty or Famous?
« on: July 20, 2010, 10:31:16 AM »
Just wondering if any of our members have had any brushes with, or just real-life viewings, of Royalty, and how it went.  I myself saw Prince Andrew back in 1993 when he visited Canadian Forces Base Petawawa. I was working in Pembroke and quick got out to the cormer during my coffee break just as the Prince's car was passing by. As there weren't many people where I was standing I had a very clear view of him looking directly at me and smiling as he returned my wave.  It was very memorable and thrilling actually.

I think the facial likeness is uncanny; other than that it is creepy in it's similarities to Christ Jesus and therefore I don't like it.

I was reading on the main page Muriel Buchannan's biography on Victoria Melita, and she says..."But on one occasion her kindness caused me a great deal of unhappiness. "It would be so wonderful if Meriel could marry Sandro, it would be such fun to have her with us," she told my mother; but it all came to nothing."  Which Sandro are they speaking about?  Thanks.

Love this one!:

This picture always makes me laugh. Doesn't it seem like everyone is completely miserable and the only one smiling is Willy? Even though the children have received gifts from him they look as though they are about to cry.

The Imperial Family / Re: Pronounciation

Could anyone please tell me the pronunciation of "lapis lazuli".  Does is sound like ... Lapees La-zoo-lie, or Lapees La-zoo-lee?  Thank you.

All other evidence aside, I really just can't get past the pictures of Anna Anderson. To me she doesn't look a thing like Anastasia, and the thing that really defines it for me is the shape of the mouth. I understand that, if the stories are true, there was some sort of trauma to the lower half of the face, teeth missing, etc. That can constitute a reason for the shape of the face being different, but not the size of the lips. Anastasia didn't have very full lips. Anna Anderson has quite large, full lips. Just doesn't cut it for me.

Did she look like Anastasia? - NO
Could she speak Russian? - NO
Did her DNA match that of Imperial Family? - NO
Do I believe she was Anastasia? - NO

The Windsors / Re: Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, Part II

Calling her unpopular is one thing. I totally agree that she is unpopular in Canada.  I think the case in a lot of Canadians is siimply indifference.  But to call her a vindictive, power hungry woman who uses psychological manipulation, and causes psycho sexual dependency in her husband is a colourful claim that is just impossible to back up.

Maybe the PR hacks have been working wonders in Britain but in Canada and Australia she is seen as a vindictive and self serving person, willing to do almost anything for power.

Please don't speak on behalf of Canada. We all have differing opinions. I for one like Camillla and apparently the future King does too.

The Russian Revolution / Re: A Soviet Story

I watched part of this yesterday and hope to finish today. I was absolutely shocked. I had no idea this had happened. 1932-1933 - 7 million people in Ukraine starved to death ON PURPOSE in one year, and the world did nothing. Unbelievable, man's inhumanity to man.

Having Fun! / Re: What's the weather like at your place?

Rather exciting weather here in southern Ontario!  Had severe thunder storm and tornado warnings all across southwestern Ontario which was a bit scarey. Also there was a 5.0 earthquake in Quebec yesterday and I felt one of the aftershocks at work; my chair was shaking. That certainly had everyone talking.
