What is Anastasia holding in that picture? It looks like a flute or something, lol.

Hmm, I didn't realize that there was such a difference in when men were expected to marry versus women. Interesting.

Olga had lots of cousins, but how many of them would have been realistic potential husbands?

I was just thinking, had anyone ever considered the future British kings Edward VIII or George VI for Olga? They were her second cousins, and born in 1894 and 1895, so there wouldn't have been any issues with age. Did Olga meet them when the Imperial Family visited England in 1907? I know Olga wanted to remain Russian, so she probably would have said no, but was it ever thought of?

When you suddenly burst out of the bathroom shreiking "I have Olga waves on both sides of my head!!"

You might be amused to know that I saw The King's Speech today and when I saw Helena Bonham Carter's hairstyle I thought, "She has Olga waves!"

He almost doesn't look like a photographer though... he's wearing similar robes to the other patients. Of course, if he was another patient, I don't know why they wouldn't have put him in the picture as well...

By the way, do you happen to know what year that photo of Tatiana was taken?

I've seen the one of her and Olga where they're wearing that same outfit labeled as 1916, but I have no idea how accurate that is.

Since this song is called "Boy 1904," I couldn't help but think of Alexei as I heard it. It comes across as a calming yet also somewhat haunting elegy.

lol, looking at both of those pictures at once is like playing one of those spot-the-differences games!

I just had to share this with everyone... This is a video of sock puppets singing Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance," but changing the words so it's the story of Rasputin. (With a little bit of the Boney M. song thrown in for good measure.) I got quite a laugh out of it. ;)

I don't know much about the science of it but I'd say it's entirely possible. Is it any different for Russian though? As in, are these studies only based on writing the Roman alphabet, and writing in Cyrillic is so different that it requires a different style or something like that?

I related Little Women to OTMA as well! But I always thought of Jo as Anastasia.

Having Fun! / Romanov personalities in fictional characters
« on: November 26, 2010, 06:29:07 PM »
I searched around but I couldn't find anything like this... sorry in advance if I'm wrong. Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone looks at any characters in movies, books, tv shows, etc., and thinks that they're like a certain Romanov.

My examples are silly, but they got me thinking, so I'll post them anyway. I was watching the Little Mermaid out of some childhood nostalgia, and Ariel's constant swooning over Eric reminded me of Maria. So then I decided to make a little game and see if I could compare any of the other Disney princesses to her sisters. It's a bit hard to find exact personality traits, but I think Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) is definitely like Olga. "Nose stuck in a book," devotion to her father, etc. When I was trying to think of one for Tatiana, I remembered how during the war she wrote that she was sorry she wasn't a man, because she could be more useful. So then obviously I thought of Mulan. I don't really know if that character's personality really matches Tatiana though, other than the sense of duty. And that they both sported hair shorter than the social norms for women of their time! Also the scene at the beginning of the movie where Mulan sees two children stealing a girl's doll and returns it to the girl reminds me of Tatiana's "governess" ways. Anastasia is especially difficult, because she already has her own animated princess incarnation. But it's not a Disney princess. The only thing I could come up with is kind of an odd choice - Pocahontas. Her name itself meant "little mischief," while Anastasia was nicknamed "imp," and a lot of Pocahontas's daring/wild behaviors at the beginning of the movie remind me of Anastasia. Though the marriage dilemma thing reminds me more of Olga, since she was the only sister to whom that could really apply.

Anyway, they're not perfect examples, and this thread isn't just "Which Disney princesses fit OTMA," it's whatever characters you want and whatever Romanovs you want. Have you ever read a book and imagined any of the characters as looking like a Romanov? Things like that.

Olga also looks quite a bit like her mother in this picture:

It's almost like the parent that the children resembled depends on the lighting, angle, etc. Although overall I'd say Olga resembled her father.

I wonder how big the scar was, since I've never been able to notice it in the captivity photos where Anastasia has a shaved head. But maybe that's just due to the quality of older photographs... I've only ever been able to notice the scar on Nicky's forehead in one or two photos.

I had an odd one last night. It was that Alexandra, Olga, Tatiana and Alexei were escaping Russia after the revolution by pretending to be ordinary passengers on a modern-day cruise ship! Alexei and Olga were walking around the ship and socializing, etc., but Alix preferred to stay in her room, so Tatiana stayed with her. But then Olga told her mother something like "If you don't start acting like a normal passenger, people are going to get suspicious!" So then get this one... they all go around the ship in ordinary clothes, none of the frilly dresses and jewelry, and start playing in a bunch of slides the ship had! So all of them are repeatedly sliding down and going back up, and having a lot of fun. Right before the dream ended they were coming to their destination, and it was a strange island that made Alix uneasy. But I don't remember anything else about it. Except for a random part in the dream where I think Olga was trying to sing but had lost her voice, which was probably influenced by me having a really sore throat right now. It was certainly an amusing dream.
