Alexandra Feodorovna / Who is "red boy"?
« on: May 29, 2018, 03:14:03 PM »
Hi all-

In a letter to Anna Vyrubova dated 11/23/17, Alexandra writes, "How time flies! In two days it will be 9 months since I saw red boy for the last time!! Cannot write upon the subject!"

So she's referring to someone she said goodbye to on  2/25/17 - the tail end of her time at the infirmary? This leads me to believe she might be referring to one of her favorite patients, but since the girls were already sick with measles by then it seems unlikely. I also considered the possibility that she's using some kind of code that Pankratov wouldn't have picked up on. Can anyone help shed some light on this?

Anastasia Nicholaievna / Re: Anastasia May Have had a Crush?

From Helen Azar's book on Maria and Anastasia:

"You probably see Viktor Erastovich from afar? - then I am envious of you!" - Anastasia to Nicholas, Sept 4 1915

"I am happy that Vikt. Erast. already arrived at your infirmary. Tell Shyvbzik that I share her joy in seeing him and following him if she deigns him with it." - Nicholas to Maria, June 3 1916

"Today we went to an early Obednya as Mama received communion, while we pretended to be the public because no one except us and Anya was there - my “husband” was there but he left.” - Anastasia to Nicholas Aug 8, 1916 - I think she probably means Zborovsky here

There's a bit more I've read about Zborovsky, but I haven't transcribed the notes for it yet. I know he had a sister Katya who later died in the gulag- Anastasia's famous "Good-bye. Don't forget me." comes from a letter to her. The same book from which the quotes come also identify him as having a wife named Rimma, so it was most definitely just a hopeless schoolgirl crush.

I know I say this a lot, but really, you all never, ever disappoint me.  :)

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Who is Irina Tolstaya?
« on: May 06, 2018, 07:50:12 PM »
Hi all -

I've been rereading Tatiana's diaries and letters, and twice in the fall of 1915 she mentions someone by the name of Irina Tolstaya. The first time she calls her "Alexei's Irina," and then the second time she tells Nicholas to tell Alexei they saw her at church. Anyone have any clues as to the identity of this possible crush/friend?

From what I've seen, it seems Anastasia had a crush on Viktor Zborovsky. Nicholas wrote in a wartime letter to Olga that he gave his blessing.

Servants, Friends and Retainers / De Lazari
« on: December 27, 2015, 10:53:49 AM »
I keep coming across this name referenced in the wartime diaries of the girls. It's always associated with music - DeLazari was at the hospital concert, played the balalaika, etc. Does anyone have any further information on this person?

I started reading this today and it screams "amateur" to me. Obviously it was a vanity publication, and it seems that Banks has some kind of axe to grind. In her acknowledgments she dedicates a song to anyone who "is a bully."

The run on sentences are clunky, and they make it feel like a ninth grade paper. My guess is that not enough people saw the manuscript before it went to press, and therefore there is no way to be able to trust the spelling or grammar. This doesn't make me feel comfortable trusting it as a source, especially since, as Helen R pointed out, the bibliography is so inadequate.

Also, the very last page in the book thanks "The Doctor" for time traveling back to 1942 to get the Livadia photos. (?)

The Alexander Palace / Re: Alexandra's Balcony (Photos)
« on: February 22, 2015, 10:14:29 PM »
I love all of these pictures of the family out on the balcony.  In most of them, everyone looks so relaxed and at ease.

One photo in particular piqued my curiosity.  Is it really Alexandra with her hair down?

I don't think so. It looks like she's got a headdress on that falls to her shoulders.

Apologies if this has been discussed. All my life I've seen this photo labeled as Maria and Anastasia, but no matter how hard I look I can't see Maria in the top girl's face. Helen Azar's latest book has it labeled as Olga and Anastasia. This seems more likely. Thoughts?

What room is Olga in in her sickbed picture? I know at one point she was moved to a real bed in the sickroom, but we can see here that she's still in her cot. So the bedroom she shared with Tatiana, then?

The Final Chapter / Re: Time in Basement
« on: November 22, 2014, 08:27:23 PM »
It seems they were convinced there was going to be a journey ahead, even though Yurovsky only told them they were going to the basement for their safety. The girls had drawstring bags with them and they all took pillows, blankets, etc. And don't forget Anastasia had Jemmy. So it's logical that much of the last 45 minutes upstairs would have been spent getting things ready for the trip.

This looks like it could be one of the most inclusive films ever released about the imperial family. I'm glad to see Anya Vyrubova has been included. To my knowledge she's never appears (or been named, at least) in any other films.

That sounds like it might have come from Alix's treatise on love and marriage. Even if the quote isn't here it's worth taking a look at.

Do any pictures exist of Nicholas and Alexandra's bedroom in Tobolsk?

Funny that this thread got bumped today. I'm restarting Tatiana's section of my novella, and she has a big scene with Alix. I'm trying to keep their voices as authentic as possible so I've got lots of quotes stocked up.

Forgive me for not having sources handy. I can hunt them down individually if anyone wants.

Seems she was very fond of speaking in platitudes, something that carried over into Tatiana's speech and letters as well.
