Born to Emanuele Filiberto and Margherita di Valois in Rivoli in 1562, Carlo Emanuele rose to the throne in 1580. Like his father he was ambitious and full of vitality. However, while Emanuele Filiberto spent his energy on governing, Carlo Emanuele spent his energy on creating sumptuous grandeur and competing in terms of splendour with the most prestigious foreign courts. In 1585, he fell in love and married Caterina, daughter of the King of Spain, Filippo II.

Italian Royal Families / Duchesses of Savoia (1416-1713)
« on: July 13, 2005, 06:43:42 AM »
This thread is very linked to "Queens of Sardinia", in fact after Anna of Orleans ( first Queen of Sicily and then of Sardinia) they were all Duchesses, but I have put them in that thread for a reason of continuity. Now I think it is right to start a new thread with Beatrice of Portugal Carlo III's wife, also becouse there is quite a deep difference between Carlo III's age and Emanuele Filiberto's one that was like a new era for the House of Savoia.
