The Final Chapter / Would ANY country have offered sanctuary?
« on: January 08, 2007, 08:42:44 AM »
I have often mused about what country actually would have taken the Imperial Family in?

I have thought that culturally, the Pacific Northwest would have been a good pick, given that there was a large White Russian population.  However, as part of Canada (and therefore the UK,) it could have been tricky.

The US was most likely "out" since Woodrow Wilson was...well....not an ardent supporter of the IF.

France?  Switzerland?  Denmark?

I think any of the German principalities would have been out of the question as well.

Any musings?

Having Fun! / A Cup of Tea With....
« on: June 07, 2006, 09:26:35 PM »
Dear fellows in facination with the IF,

If you could have a cup of tea and a good hour's chat with any member of the pre-Revolution royal (imperial) family, who would it be?  And why?

Would you ask Alexandra who she hoped her daughters might marry?

Would you ask "deeper" questions such as Nicholas' feelings about struggling with a chronically ill child, or would you prefer to ask less intrusive questions such as where he intended to route the Standart next season?

Take the position not of a subject, perhaps, but as a Serene Highness cousin who is traveling through Moscow on a journey to the Orient.  You can ask questions without interference of rank necessarily, and you're not in danger of being tossed out as an intruder by the gendarmes.

I'll start:  I'd love to chat with Tatiana, and ask if she would have preferred a university education abroad (not as we know now, but more as the finishing-school-variety as was then) and where she thought she might feel most comfortable.

The Final Chapter / Realistically, was escape possible?

My H (who is a military strategist) and I often muse about what it would take to have aided and abetted an escape from the Ipatiev House.

Other than wild fantasy (Time travel with a BlackHawk helicoper!) what do you think it would have "taken" to rescue the entire family?

Planning it would be a nightmare, and given that the family "telegraphed" their expectations so openly whenever hope arose.  Thus, it would have to be planned without their knowledge.

Provision would need to be made to carry Alix and Alexei due to their infirmities.

What does everyone think?  A simple overwhelming force, or diversionary tactics and a limited strike force at the house?

With all the brainpower and knowledge here, we could come up with a plan.

Imperial Russian Antiques / Funerary Wreath, Alx. III
« on: June 19, 2005, 10:26:15 PM »
A good friend of mine, who is a collector of an eclectic nature, recently was offered a funerary wreath from the funeral of Alexander III.

He describes it as being of gold leaf, leaves arranged in multiple small clusters on a half- or three-quarters circlet, with numbers inscribed on the inner leaves.  The information about the piece indicates that the numbering was because there were many of these struck for the funeral; each piece being numbered, was given to a courtier of varying status.

Who can I refer my friend to for verification of the provenance of this piece?  It is rumored that it was designed by Faberges but of that information we are less certain.

Please feel free to post here or e-mail me using the appropriate functions here - and thanks so much.

Imperial Succession and the Throne / Mr. Macedonsky

I know that he posts from Russia, and they've just had a very long power black-out plus a heat wave.

Is that why he hasn't posted lately, do you suppose?  I always enjoy reading his postings.
