The Alexander Palace / The Nazi's
« on: September 07, 2008, 07:09:52 AM »
Does anyone know what the Nazi's managed to steal form the Alexander Palace and if any of the items have ever been returned. After they had left the Palace staff might have know what was missing from their knowledge of the contents.

The Alexander Palace / External sun blinds
« on: September 03, 2008, 01:21:13 PM »
Does anyone know when the blinds were removed and why? The corner reception room could be I understand very bright and the blinds would have helped but by the time of Nicholas II they are no longer there. There also seems to be a path running from the kitchen pond that I think was not there in the time of Nicholas II and always thought the rear grass garden was flat.

Having Fun! / Hidden passages/rooms etc
« on: September 03, 2008, 05:43:05 AM »
Greetings one and all,

Do any of the Palaces, Winter, Peterhoff, Catherine etc, have any hidden passages or rooms contained within them? I know in England often there are secret chambers/corridors etc and wondered if any have ever been found in Russian Palaces. If they ave what were they used for?

Greetings all,

It seems to me that to learn Russian when studying Russian history might be a good idea but have no idea were to start. I was thinking of the rosetta stone program but does anyone have a better idea?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Does anyone know who the gentlemen are in the background of this rather impressive line up? I thought some may be members of the Romonov family but am not sure.

I wonder if anyone knows more about the corps des pages in Russia?

From the little I know it was a military academy for nobles but that is all I have for now.

What, if any, of the pre 1917 nobles families still reside inside Russia or have returned? We know most if not all Romonov's were killed or fled the country but there were other noble families in the contry and I wondered what happended to their descendants and if they live in Russia today?

Having Fun! / Where were the clothes of the Imerial Family made?
« on: August 04, 2008, 03:56:56 AM »
I was wondering about the clothes of the Imperial Family. Were they made in Russia or did some or all come from abroad, say Paris, London, Milan etc. If from abroad do the firms still exist and would they still have the measurements used to create the clothes.

Any thoughts?

The Final Chapter / The severed finger
« on: July 30, 2008, 01:26:11 PM »
Whilst reading another thread there was mention of the severed finger found by, as I understand, Sokolov. Form memory I recall Sokolov thought that it came from the family Dr as the finger nail was badly bitten but with the passage of many years (some 30 since I read this) I may have got that wrong. From my failing memory I thought the finger was in the box of items sent to England and ended up with George V by Sokolov and is assumed lost as George V did not show any intrest in the contents as I recall.

Does anyone know the current location of this finger, who it belonged to (if known) and if DNA sample has been taken from it to try and prove who it once belonged to?

From all that I have learnt in my short time here I now think it may have been the finger of the Empress. The last photo taken of her and shown on this forum somewhere shows the Empress as very thin and she seems to have lost a great deal of weight towards the end no doubt from extreme worry and perhaps a loss of appetite. If she was this depressed, nervous etc I can see the Empress hacking away at her finger nails and assume the finger may have been removed post murder to get at the rings she wore but could not take off. Of course the same could be said for the Tsar as he also had a ring he could not remove.

I wold welcome others views on this

Michael

I did do a search but could only find mention of the finger thought to have belonged to Ella.

Hello,

I have been trying to find the recorded temperature for Ekaterinburg on the day of the murders. I know that the Tsaraina said it was 15 degrees but this of course is not in fact that hot. Tried a google search with no luck and I wonder if anyone knows the recorded temperature for the day/night of the murders. We know that it had been hot for days but of course they had the windows shut and wore many more layers of clothing than we do today .

Thanks,

Hello all,

I was wondering how many of the member of the forum are also members of the Russian Orthodox church or if any members have considered converting?

Compared to the Church of England the services are breath taking.

Hello,

I thought I would ask if anyone here is going to Russia and Ekaterinburg for the anniversary of the massacre of the Imperial Family this year to pay respects? I might try to take a week to visit St Petersburg, Tsarkoe Selo and Ekaterinburg if I can, I wondered if any other members will also visit at this time?

Nicholas II / Nicholas II - English Titles and Honors
« on: June 06, 2008, 12:35:03 AM »
Hello,

Does any one know what, if any, titles or honors HIM Nicholas II held in England prior to 1917. I sure I read he was made a Knight of the Garter, England's highest honor, but wondered if he held any others?

The Alexander Palace / Palace layout
« on: May 31, 2008, 07:32:21 AM »
Hello,

I saw this photo and it got me thinking. From the plans on the AP website it gives the impression that from the Imperial bedroom you could walk into the Mauve Room in a straight line and then into the Pallsander Room. Then the door into the Maple room was in the middle of the wall and from the Maple room there was no straight exit only the side exit into the corridor. However, this photo seems to show a straight line of sight from the Imperial bedroom to the Corner/Reception room which on the plans and old photos should not be possible.

When the room were ripped out did it reveal original doors that had been hidden by the redesign in the Tsar's time and this therefore is the original design when the Palace was built? It has been driving me mad all week-end and has had me going through plansa and the AP website for hours.

The Alexander Palace / A what if question...
« on: May 24, 2008, 02:49:56 AM »
Hello all,

IF the Dynasty had not fallen and Alexis had become Tsar where would he have lived? One wing was sealed and shut from Alexander III, one was a guest wing, one was his Father's wing and one his Mother's and family rooms. What do we think he would have done? Opened the Alexander III rooms or used one of the others or another palace? The practice of shutting up rooms when a Tsar died does mean that over time one runs out of rooms that can be used for private and living purposes. It seems by 1917 space was at a premium.

Hope I am allowed to ask this and apologize if not.

Michael HR
