« on: November 25, 2016, 09:44:12 AM »
So, let's try to find as much as possible IF's photos with framed photos in it.

For example, in this one:

,
you can found three Aleksei's photos on framed on the wall:
, and under those there is this one with drums:

------------------------------------------------------------
Another example:

Tatiana in Mauve Room:

You can notice Alexei's photo taken on board the Standart:

.

Feel free to correct me if I put the wrong photo. Let's see what another photos can we found. ANd the main point is to make people post a little bit more.

Having Fun! / Number of the photos of NAOTMAA
« on: November 21, 2013, 08:38:37 AM »
I am making this thread in the 'Having Fun' section since I want to play with combinatorics and numbers so I invite all the members to join in the discussion on the topic : How many photos of NAOTMAA were taken? :-)

Here is my little model: If we suppose that - we count the photos taken since Olga's birth;
                                                              - IF took one photo each day, each hour, during daylight (we do not include night hours which is approx. 9 hours)
(To be precise - only one member was taking all the photos, for example, the Tsar).
                                                              - we start counting since November 17th 1895 up to December 31th 1916,
then we get simple multiplication : 7716 days (between two above mentioned dates) multiplied by 15 (24-9) photos per a day we get, the maths says : 115,740 photos from that period.

The model is not valid (or real) (but the approximation is pretty good, if we take the assumptions mentioned above to be correct) due to many reasons. Here are some:

a) They surely did not took photos each hours and surely not every day.
b) We didn't include the years of 1917 and 1918, because there isn't as many as in the 1895-1916 period.
c) We didn't count the photos taken by Court photographers or the photos taken by other people. (Like Anna Virubova, Gilliard, Levitskiy, Bulla, Gibbes etc.)
d) The IF took series and series of the photos in one hour, not only one as the model supposed.
e) All of them took photos, not only one member.
f) There are many photos of the one member of the IF taken at the same day, not only one of each one of them.
.
.etc.
.

This model is good since:

a) Many of the photos may have been forever lost/burnt, so we can only suggest that there surely were more photos taken during their lives than it is today available in the archives.
b) Many photos are not published yet.
c)The IF adored to take photos, so they could be really have been taking them even during night hours inside the palace, for example.
.
.
etc.
.

My question is -- does the number I got above, 115,740,  really and truly approximate the number of the photos taken of our NAOTMAA? Do you have any idea, suggestion on how to get as much as more precise number? :-) Of course, if we add the years 1917/8, we get more photos. (Not much though).

2nd question -- Do you think that there are most of Olga's photos taken, only because she was the eldest, when speaking of OTMAA? ANd which member of NAOTMAA was the most photographed. IMO, it is Nicholas. How about the children, was Olga most photographed one, I have always wondered, or someone else, Alexei, or Tatiana for example?

PS. If we make more correct model, for example, if we include the assumption that , from 1910 on, every member of the IF took photos (not only one as in the model), we would get a much, much larger number. And so on , and so on. I read somewhere that there are cca. 150,000 photos in all the archives. I don't know whether it is true or not.

Tell me your opinions aand take part in the discussion.

Having Fun! / What was the best decade in the twentieth century?
« on: October 16, 2011, 01:19:42 PM »
Yes, what was the best decade in the twentieth century? (At any field --- in culture, science, peace, in any segment of life). I was born in early 90's, so I have not many arguments to judge.

I'd like to hear everyone's opinions. I personally love 70's somehow. But each decade has special nice/bad moments. So what do you think?

« on: October 12, 2011, 04:11:35 AM »
Hi guys, I wanted to hear from you what exactly is your subject of interest -- what period, which person, does it include OTMA, or NAOTMAA, or the whole Romanov family generally, is period you love to explore Nicholas' reign, war period, captivity period, or something else?

My subject of interest is Tsarevich Alexei, war period, so from 1914 on, Rasputin, and photos identifying.

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Aleksei's Pet - Boiika?
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:21:44 PM »
I was reading Aleksei's letters, and came to the one letter to his father dated on December 18th, 1915, where the Heir(in the end) mentions himself, Boika, Shot and Joy. I used 'SEARCH' engine, and came to the one post where Boiika (Baiika) is mentioned once, as possible White dog the Heir owned!

What information more do we have on regarding this pet? What if Boika was...a cat? Is it mentioned somewhere? I 'think' that it name would rather be given to the Female pet, it ends with 'a'. And yes, in my language, it would be translated as 'Fairytale'. :-)

(If there exists a familiar topic, I'd suggest to the mods to merge/remove this one). Thanks for reading! Nena.:-)

Nicholas II / Time of birth?
« on: May 19, 2010, 08:34:22 AM »
Is there any specific source that reveals Nicholas' time of birth on May 6/18th 1868? MF or AIII diary entry perhaps?

Rasputin / Complete series of Spiritual ranks/titles
« on: April 19, 2010, 08:13:22 AM »
I have always been doubting about these words on regarding Rasputin. What is the more correct title for him? Radzinsky uses 'starets' so I thought it is proper title. However, Belochka once kindly corrected me stating that his actual title was 'strannik'. So I would like to know the difference between the words?  There's third name - moujik (muzhik). I understand that 'Grishka' must come from his name, Gregory (In fact, 'Grishka' is a diminutive).

Russian writer Dostoyevsky wrote an extensive meaning of the word 'starets' in his book 'The Karamazov Brothers'. Something like that starets is a man who takes your own will into his soul. There is a quote in Massie's 'Nicholas and Alexandra' as well.

From Wikipedia:

A starets (Russian: стáрец, fem. стáрица) is an elder of a Russian Orthodox monastery who functions as venerated adviser and teacher. Elders or spiritual fathers are charismatic spiritual leaders whose wisdom stems from God as obtained from ascetic experience.

However, the same name 'Rasputin'  is derived from old - Russian 'rasputa' (With no way). It has always been difficult to define his actual rank, since he was not a monk, but he was a member of the Khlysts. If anyone can reveal my doubts about his the most proper title.

The Final Chapter / Mr. Meyer - a mysterious figure
« on: November 07, 2009, 09:01:37 PM »
I have always wanted to know was this character fictional, or a really one? He is said to be one of the witnesses of events occurred in the Red Night of July 17th 1918. 'He' said some terrific details on regarding IF's perishing, he is mentioned in Lyubov Petrovna Miler's book, 'Tsarskaya Semiya - Zhertva tamoi Sili'. (The Imperial Family - Victim of a Dark Force', see : http://www.ozon.ru/context/detail/id/3323931/ ), as one of the witnesses. I wonder, are there any more sources on regarding this man and if anyone could share with us something?

The Imperial Family / The Imperial Children's heights
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:30:01 PM »
I tried to find out the heights of OTMAA by using applied mathematics. The only way is to use proportions. But of course, if conditions allow us to do it.  We have several problems. To start by mentioning the idealistic conditions. At first, we must have two important parameters – correct years of the photo (later I found out that I had mislabeled many photos), and either one of parents (Nicholas or Alexandra) with one of OTMAA. When we find these photos, we must make sure that they are standing at same feet line. (reason – as the objects are nearer to camera (compared to other object), they look taller/bigger than another one, so the measurements (done by my ruler) turns supernatural). Then, we have to dismiss high heels of Grand Duchesses’, or simply to take off those centimeters. ‘And of course, they must stand, no bending or facing down permitted’. As well as for the hats, it is not so hard to recognize the upper lines of foreheads/tops of heads.
So, may I take Nicholas’ height to be 166 cm (median result, according to the Forensic results done in 90s, the length of Body No#4 is to be between 165 and 170 cm long,  and it is 166,5 cm), while Alexandra’s one is to be 167 cm. In their engagement photo taken at Coburg in 1894, she was, and indeed looked taller than him. So, one centimeter plus/minus doesn’t change things drastic. Because, things are very relative, and many factors take part in whole story. When we discover at least one correct height of any of the IC, we can use it to compare with others’. I managed to make some oriental results (throughout the years) we can count on – since Imperial Children grew up increasingly, all expecting the Anastasia, while Olga stopped growing that much visible, (she was the oldest) sometime in 1915/6.

I got some contradictions – it is sign of mislabeling the year, or even my bad eye. I once got Aleksei’s height to be 130 cm in 1912, while in 1913 125 cm. Of course, something was wrong. I tried over and over again.

Now I can freely say that photos what fulfill all those mentioned conditions are rare, to find correct year, standing in full line, also in same feetline, whole bodies, without extra clothes, like hats, high heeled shoes, caps and the rest are.

In the year 1908 (using Lanie’s label from www.livadia.org), where the Empress stands with OTM on the balcony a AP, only Maria is standing in the same feetline as Alexandra does). For same year, I measured Alexei’s height with Nicholas’ one while being reviewing the Standart in 1908. (I remember source comes from GARF).

1908

Alexei 103 cm

I also may add another results (they are highly wrong, simply because they contradict with results from 1909/1910, which are much more precise)
Olga  146 cm
Tatiana 144 cm
 Maria 132 cm.

Even not all conditions from this one are fulfilled!

1909 / 1910

Used Nichoals’ photo with all of the IF standing in same row, taken by Empress at the AP.

Olga  153 cm
Tatiana  140 cm
Maria  130 cm
Anastasia  119 cm
Alexei  111 cm

Now 1912 comes. I used two photo shoots – from Borodino celebrations in August (to find Alexei’s height from the year out) and from The White Flower Festival held on April 23rd 1912 at Yalta. Tatiana took over Olga, became taller than her.

Olga   150 cm
Tatiana  156 cm
Maria   143  cm
Anastasia  129 cm
Alexei  115 cm

In 1913, thanks to kind Sarushka’s post in which she gave us the measurements of Big Pair’s Court Growns, I calculated their heights to be 158 cm for Olga and 163 cm for Tatiana. We see, Olga stops growing, while Tatiana continues increasingly. Soemthing is indeed odd with measurements of their Regiments uniforms.

It is hard to find 1913 photo with other members of family, unless conditions are harmed, which they are. I can only be sure of OT heights  -- as well during Tercentenary celebrations at Moscow, Kostroma, St. Petersburg and in the other cities, Alexei stands in the same feetline as his parents. But it is too risky to try anything. I got something around 125 cm on regarding him, and approximately 145 cm on regarding Anastasia.

1914

(GARF labels the last one to be taken in 1914 actually, Maria began having her hair up before turning 16)

Olga 158, 69 cm, we can take it to be 160 cm (decimal numbers and rule, if the number passes over 5, we 'ring about' one cm more)
Tatiana  163 cm
Maria     158 cm
Anastasia  147 cm

I used formal shoot from Livadia (or AP) from the spring of 1914, comparing another one photo with Alexandra’s height. Most likely I counted Anastasia’s heels, so her measurement may be not correct. Alexei is to be done. Maria seems to be grown up, just to be as same height as Olga.

Tsarevich Alexei Nicholaievich / Tennis photos - Finland and Crimea
« on: September 21, 2009, 12:05:28 PM »
I have noticed that there are many shoots of all members of the IF taken at Finland (For Dowager Maria's namesday) in 1912, and also at Livadia, during IF's 1914 visit at Crimea (relating tennis court, there are video clips of them playing tennis), but Aleksei seems to be abandoned in those series of photos. Has anyone idea why, and is there any existing photo of him taken at this two places outside?

Thanks in advance. I think it has something to do with his forbiddings given by Empress (and she also appears rarely).
