Is the portrait on the wall at the top right of this photo a portrait of Princess Alice? This is from a picture of the interior of the Cambridge apartment in Kensington Palace.

I usually don't post on the assorted boards for lack of new information to share, but Ilana, I purchased your book with mixed impressions.  I have books on Alix and Ella, and the ficitional one about the royal mob on VMH, so I wasn't sure what to expect.  I was pleasantly surprised to find a new book that is almost impossible to put down when I am home.  I only wish I didn't read so fast as I am almost done.  Congratulations! :)

I don't recall reading about this in this thread, but I've been rereading Hessian Tapestry again, and it mentioned that the Neues Palais was a drain on Alice's children's and grandchildren's finances.  The book also mentioned that the Neues Palais was sold in 1943 and destroyed by the RAF the following year.  Is it known whom the palace was sold to?  Thanks in advance!

I join my thanks with Douglas!  A new era is dawning at the AP!

Thank you for your response, EmmyLee!  I didn't really think that the landscaping itself was faithful, but one can always wish!  I'm just pleased to see the outside of the palace looking SO much better and the restoration, which IMO, won't be so faithful as the board would wish, but all the same attention is being paid to the AP and that makes so much of a difference!

i wonder exactly what is this...?
Is it me, or does the face on this ribbon resemble Princess Alice moreso than Princess Alexandra?

I rarely post as I base my readings on and appreciate the knowledge and pictures so much, but I have a question about the landscaping.  How faithful, if it is at all, is the landscaping fronting the palace to the original?

I wouldn't have thought that such important family paintings (as I imagine they would be to Queen Victoria) would have hung in Kensington Palace where she wouldn't have seen them, i.e. the painting of her marriage, Bertie's christening, and his subsequent marriage in 1863.  I always imagined them hanging in Buckingham Palace.  Thanks for posting this pictures!

Has anyone noticed what I assume to be a bruise (or simply a trait of older age) on HM's hand in the pictures of her enjoying herself at the Horse Show above?

If I'm correct, the couple standing is Sophie and Tino, while the couple seated is Mossy and her husband.

Here's a picture of Birkhall:

I believe this drawing uses the photograph of Alexei taken during the time of the 300th anniversary celebrations.

I can't remember where I've read this, but Queen Louise recognized that her daughter Dagmar was treating Alexandra just as she herself had treated Louise of Sweden and came to regret it.  She pointed this out to Dagmar as an example of how not to conduct herself and to avoid the clashes that would later come between N&A and Dagmar.

That's Ernest of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's widow, Alexandrine of Baden.
