The full name of the baby is Simeon III Hassan Munoz Saxe-Coburg. Hassan is after the deceased King of Morocco who was a close friend of the baby's grandfather.

Balkan Royal Families / Re: King Carol I of Romania and his family

Carol I has just been voted the second greatest Romanian of all times!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Organized by the national public television [TVR], during 6 month Romanians have been able to vote online, by cellphone and mail.

On the first place is a ruler [voievod] of Moldavia [Moldova], "Stefan cel Mare" [Steven the Great?] from the XVI century, who defeated large armies of the Ottoman Empire; Stefan was called by the Pope "athlete of Christ", and has been canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church.

Considering that every Romanian learned in school about Stefan [promoted even by the Communists] and almost nothing about Carol I, I think it's was a great success for the Romanian Royal Family! :) :) :)

I wish Missy was in the final top 10 "Great Romanians"! :-\

Speaking as a Bulgarian, I am really grateful that he personally led the Romanian Army against the Ottomans in the 1877-78 Russian-Turkish War which resulted in the liberatyon of Bulgaria. At the end of his reign, however, he (or his government) stole Bulgarian territory (forst Silistra, and then the whole of South Dobrudja) which soured the relations between the two good neighbour countries.

Having Fun! / Re: What is Your Russian Connection?

My paterbal grandfather was from Minsk Gubernia in today's Belarus. He volunteered to the Imperial Russian Army during WW1 although he had received an invitation to join relatives un NYC. He was wounded and taken POW by the Bulgarian Army. At the Chirpan MASH he met a good-looking nurse and fell in love with her. The rest (me included) is history.

Thanks for sharing, Alex. I remember writing a short article about her running for President but I missed most of this wonderful background. By the way, what was her result at the presidential polls?

Re Saint John of Rila:
"Papal Address at Orthodox Monastery of St. John of Rila

RILA, Bulgaria, MAY 26, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Here is a translation of the address John Paul II delivered Saturday morning when he visited the Orthodox Monastery of St. John of Rila, considered the spiritual heart of Bulgaria...
'In the course of my visit to Bulgaria, I wanted to make this pilgrimage to Rila to venerate the relics of the holy monk John and to express gratitude and affection to all of you: "We give thanks to God always for you all, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thes 1:2-3)...
Blessed John of Rila -- whom I arranged to have depicted along with other holy men and women of East and West in the mosaic of the Redemptoris Mater Chapel in the Apostolic Palace, and to whom this Monastery bears enduring witness -- when he heard JesusĀ“ words calling him to renounce all his possessions and give them to the poor (cf. Mk 10:21), left everything for the precious pearl of the Gospel, and placed himself under the tutelage of holy ascetics in order to learn the art of spiritual combat...'

Imperial Claimants Post Here / Re: Romanov and Bulgaria
« on: April 16, 2006, 01:02:09 AM »
Let me add my two cents: I think Nora is NOT Anastasia but she is a Romanov. I mean she must be a descendant of a Romanov (DNA proof), probably the offspring of a morganatic marriage so she doesn't want to boast. Any missing Romanov bastards?

Foisor is used for state protocol events, so usually no photo of it can be made, and "ordinary" people cannot visit it.

I have several pictures of Foisor (interior and exterior) but I have to scan them in order to post them.It will take some time.

Ah, the holy island of Patmos!
I am lucky that I managed to go  there in 1995.
The Bishop of Kalithea told me that in the 17th and 18th century there were Bulgarian monks in the monastery.
