The Alexander Palace / Re: Help ID-ing various rooms
« on: June 13, 2007, 08:08:29 PM »
Hello!
I've been trying to figure out the location of the sick room for a long time, and I have an idea (probably feeble, but what the heck...).  First, I noticed in a photo of Alexei's bedroom showing his dressing table between the windows, that the curtains look like the ones in the sick room. I got to thinking: I believe that his rooms were remodeled late (1916?). If you look at room 16 & 17 on the plan---his bath and cinema---and take out the bathroom and look at it as one big room, then the configuration is correct for the sick room. The door midway on the long wall, the stove in the corner, and the window and door in the opposite corner, where there is a picture of Nicholas sitting by the sick bed.  What I wondered is, could that have been the sickroom, and then changed in the final remodel of Alexei's rooms?
I hope that I make some sense---just an idea, anyhow!   ::)

Hello!  I'm sorry if this has already been addressed, but I don't remember where in the White Palace the kitchen and other service rooms were located. It seems as if family (and state) rooms were on both the ground floor and the floor above.  I appreciate any info.  Thank you! :) ::)

What a wonderful video===thank you so much!  Though I would dearly love to visit there myself, it is unlikely that I will---so I very much appreciate seeing through the eyes of those who have!!  :) :D  I have a question, too:  where was the family's kitchen garden located( the one they worked in captivity)?  I try to see from the photos, but can't quite make it out.  Thank you!

Books about the Romanovs and Imperial Russia / Re: Atlantis Magazine
« on: July 08, 2006, 06:49:02 PM »
Hi!  I keep reading references to "Atlantis magazine", which sounds fascinating.  I would very much like to purchase back copies---does anyone know how to go about this?  I'm sorry if this is posted somewhere already---I haven't come across it.  Thank you very much!

Dear Ortino:  I don't take offense---I can understand your meaning!  But believe it or not, this IS my first forum---I'm an older lady who is brand new to the computer, and still learning what the buttons do!  In fact, I had to panic today on my library website, when a bunch of warning words came up and I had absolutely no idea what they meant!  :-X :P  I tried to order something, and I'm rather afraid what will show up...ANYHOO, I can only restate my regrets, and keep muddling through! :o

I apologize for bringing up a taboo term---I'm new to this, and while I have been reading voraciously every chance I get, I have not encountered this word before in the forum. There are many places I haven't even dived into, because there is so much! Since I read the word in "The Fate of the Romanovs", I was curious because I couldn't find it in the dictionary. ANYHOO---my sincere regrets! :-[ :-/ :'(

Books about the Romanovs and Imperial Russia / AP book?
« on: July 05, 2006, 08:07:54 PM »
I was just reading in the section about Alix's ghost that Bob Atchison would be putting out a book about the Alexander Palace in 2005.  Did it happen?  I collect Romanov books and haven't seen it, and I would certainly want to obtain it!  I hope I haven't somehow missed it...please advise!  Thanks! :)

Olga Nicholaievna / Re: Olga's birthday ball
« on: July 04, 2006, 04:56:31 PM »
Thank you for the replies and pictures---Olga looked so happy and lovely! I have wondered very much what the grand duchesses' 16th birthday necklaces looked like---I've seen Olga and Tatiana pictures when they are wearing necklaces, but they are too far away or fuzzy to really see the designs.  Does anyone know of pictures of the 16th birthday jewels?  Thanks again! :) ::)

I read in Greg King's book "The Fate of the Romanovs" on p. 341 that after the family was murdered and the Ipatiev house was deserted, the investigators found,  hidden in Nicky and Alix's bedroom, condoms of various shapes and sizes.  They also "... found a number of merkins, pubic wigs that had belonged to the empress."  Now,  I,as a mother and grandmother, thought I knew about most worldly things;  but I'm darned if I know what a "merkin" or a "pubic wig" is!!!  I guess I'm not as enlightened as I believed!  I looked for the word merkin in the dictionary, and found nothing.  Does anyone know these things? Thanks.  :-? :o :-/

I've found this a most interesting topic---I know I'm backtracking here, but thought I'd put my 2 cents in.  My grandmother was born in 1892, and she told me they made their own pads using lots of cotton wadding covered with cheesecloth, which they either pinned to the undergarment, or used a belt. I also read in Greg King's book "The Fate of the Romanovs" that sanitary napkins and belts were found in Nicholas and Alix's bedroom after they were murdered and the Ipatiev house was deserted.  In the same place in the book it said that condoms were also found hidden away in a dresser drawer in N and A's room. Evidently they had access to these kind of personal items. :o

The Alexander Palace / Nicholas & Alix's bedroom oratory
« on: July 01, 2006, 10:51:43 PM »
Hello!  I've been wondering (I wonder about trivial details... :-? :-?) if anyone knows this:  I read that in Nicholas and Alix's bedroom the oratory was to the right of the bed, and the water closet to the left. Does this mean to the right and left facing the bed, or facing away from the bed?  Thanks!

Olga Nicholaievna / Olga's birthday ball
« on: June 18, 2006, 07:36:47 PM »
I was wondering if any photos were taken of Olga at her 16th birthday ball at Livadia?  One would think they would have taken pictures.  Perhaps someone knows...thanks! :) ::)
